JI- (35 pts)READING COMPREHENSION

(Read the text attentively and answer the questions).

Democrats are fosing out to business interests as some of the continent's mostauthoritarian states hold elections this year. Foreign investment and trade are up

sharply in Sudan, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Burundi, but democracy and human-rights. • campaigners are sharply critical of the lack of political freedom and the way that ruling

5 parties have secured leading roles in the national economy.

April's Sudanese elections, which lncumbent ' Field Marshal Omer El Beshir claimed tohave won 68% of the vote, were privately dismissed as fraudulent by African andWestern observers. Public criticism of the election was muted, le_stit provoke Khartoumto try to block the referendum on Southern Sudan's independence in January 2011.

Analvsts expected to see ta the s~me balancing act in Ethiopia's elections on 23 May,where rlghts groups protested the jailing of Birtukan Mideksa and the harassment ofoppositionists like Beyene Petros and Merera Gudina. Premier Meles Zenawi is------

Rwanda as the world's top business reformer and former British Prime Minister TonyBlair has sent a team of technocrats to dispense advice. While security officiais

25 suspended two newspapers and arrested an opposition leader, Kagameis set to win

over 90% of the vote.

ln Burundi, President Pierre Nkurunziza faces elections on 28 June but has not managed

his campaign as astutely as Kagame. Nkurunziza's party is divided and activists blame it

for murderous attacks on its rivais last year. Taking increasingly draconian measures

30 against his opponents, Nkurunziza speaks admiringly of Kagame's achievements: strong
