Systemair fans and Directive ErP 125Globally increasing electricity consumption automatically increases the production of CO2 released into the atmosphere. The excess content of CO2 in the air has a negatively impact on our planet's climate. The Kyoto Protocol was and still is designed to curb this. It is an agreement adopted and signed by the European Union in 1997. The main aim of the protocol is to decrease CO2 emissions by 20 % by the year 2020. Since electric motors consume 30-40 % of the electricity produced worldwide, this is an obvious area with the greatest potential for achieving savings.

The European Union saw the adoption of European Parliament directives 2005/32/EC and 2009/125/EC, which relates in the first case only to electrical motors themselves manufactured according to the IEC standard, and in the second case, to fans as machines driven by electrical motors. The directives require manufacturers to increase the efficiency of these machines according to a fixed timetable. As primarily a European producer of fans, Systemair has worked for several years on preparing for the conversion to this new European legislation. Thanks to this, it is now fully prepared.

Directive 2005/32/EC and arising from it Regulation (EC) No 640/2009 requires production of electric motors according to standard IEC 60034-30:2008 with internationally determined efficiency IE measured according to IEC 60034-2-1:2007. The timetable for converting to this new standard includes three phases, three scopes of rated input powers of electric motors and a scale of minimum IE efficiency ranging from IE1 to IE3. The ranges of the affected input powers are based on the distributi-on of the total shares of nominal electric motor input power to the world's electricity consumption. The directive only concerns

electric motors regardless of their intended use.It is irrelevant whether the electric motor drives a fan, pump or other machine.The Standard IEC 60034-30 was adopted internationally and also means unification of production, designation and measurement of electric motor efficiency on a global scale. Until this time, individual local normalizers (NEMA, EPACT, CSA, CEMEP, COPANT, AS/NZS, JIS, GB and others) have employed varying standards and procedures.

The first phase of the timetable began on 16.06.2011 and it was the reason for adding names of certain Systemair fans by including the index IE2. The first phase concerns electric motors with an output range of 0.75 kW to 375 kW. The main technical difference besides higher efficiency IE2 is the option of controlling revolutions only by means of a frequency converter and built-in thermistors as sensors assessing overheating of motors. In the second stage, i.e. from 01.01.2015, IE3 efficiency shall be required for motors within the output range of 7.5 kW to 375 kW, working only at nominal rotational speed. For variable speed control, it shall be possible to use IE2 motors in connection with a frequency converter. Starting 01.01.2017, when the third phase begins, the rule requiring efficiency IE3 or operation of motors IE2 with frequency converters shall spread across the entire range of affected rated outputs 0.75 kW to 375 kW.

Directive 2009/125/EC (ErP 125, ErP = energy-related products) and based on the Regulation (EC) No 327/2011 established further rules, including fans as independent machines inherently containing electric motors. The directive requires for every type of fan (axial fan, centrifugal forward curved radial fan and centri-fugal radial bladed fan, centrifugal backward curved fan without housing, centrifugal backward curved fan with housing, mixed

flow fan, cross flow fan), a target minimum efficiency expressed by the efficiency class N and by a formula for calculation. The directive relates to fans in rated output range of 125 W to 500 kW. The timetable for conversion is also multistep, where only two terms are determined - 01.01.2013 and 01.01.2015.

Directive 2009/125/EC (ErP 125) – increasing of efficiency of fans

Subject and area of activity 1. This regulation establishes ecodesign requirements for placing

on the market and putting into service of fans, including those integrated into other energy-related products as covered by Directive 2009/125/EC.

2. The Regulation shall not apply to fans integrated in: a) products with a sole electric motor of 3 kW or less where

the fan is fixed on the same shaft used for driving the main functionality,

b) laundry and washer dryers ≤ 3 kW maximum electrical input power ≤ 3 kW,

c) kitchen hoods < 280 W total maximum electrical input power attributable to the fan(s) < 280 W.

3. This Regulation shall not apply to fans, which are: a) designed specifically to operate in potentially explosive

atmospheres as defined in Directive 94/9/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council (1)

b) designed for emergency use only, at short-time duty, with regard to fire safety requirements set out in Council Directi-ve 89/106/EC (2)

c) designed specifically to operate: - where operating temperatures of the gas being moved

exceed 100 °C - where operating ambient temperature for the motor, if

located outside the gas stream, driving the fan exceeds 65 °C

- where the annual average temperature of the gas being moved and/or the operating ambient temperature for the motor, if located outside the gas stream, are lower than – 40 °C,

- with a supply voltage > 1 000 V AC or > 1 500 V DC - in toxic, highly corrosive or flammable environments or in

environments with abrasive substance; d) placed on the market before 1 January 2015 as replace-

ment for identical fans integrated in products which were placed on the market before 1 January 2013; except that the packaging, the product information and the technical documentation must clearly indicate regarding (a), (b) and (c) that the fan shall only be used for the purpose for which it is designed and regarding (d) the product(s) for which it is intended.

The directive practically determines that every fan must have at its most efficient working point an efficiency higher than the calculated minimum target efficiency. If we compare the current efficiency of 37.3 % of the fan KVKE 315L with the minimum target efficiency determined by the European Commission at 44.2 % and 47.2 %, we find that as of 01.01.2013, this fan can no longer be produced, and must be replaced by a new type. The fans KVKE 315L can therefore be placed on the European market only as clearance sales of warehouse items, and only until the end of 2013.

As opposed to this, a similar type of fan, the KVKE 315EC, is fully capable of complying with EC requirements for 2015 as well. The minimum target efficiency of this type of fan is at 42.1 % for 2013, and 45.1 % for 2015. The high efficiency 50.1 % of the fan KVKE 315EC is given by using an electronically commu-tated motor, which is outstanding for its very high efficiency. Its efficiency is even higher than the current international efficiency IE3. EC fans have efficiency at the classification level IE4, which is defined only in the new standard of the International Electrotech-nical Commission IEC 60034-31:2010.

In the same manner, Systemair assessed all types of fans and de-cided on their needed modifications. In many cases replacement has occurred, and shall continue with regard to the second phase of the timetable in 2015, of the existing fan wheel for a more efficient wheel, which shall increase the overall efficiency. The second possibility was and shall be replacement of the existing asynchronous fan motors for modern brushless EC motors, which shall again increase their overall efficiency. Moreover, since 2003, Systemair has produced a parallel series of EC fans augmenting standard fans with asynchronous motors. Thanks to this, we have long since been prepared for the chan-ges that began only in 2011.

In the design program of the company Systemair, the online ca-talog at www.systemair.com or its offline version of the program Systemair Selection Tool 3, it is now possible to limit dimensioned fans only to those in accordance with Directive 2009/125/EC.

In conclusion, it is necessary to mention that fans not in com-pliance with minimum target efficiency can still be placed on markets outside the European Union, i.e. Russia, USA, Canada, Dubai, etc.
