Annual Report September 2013 1 Annual Report 1 Director: Phil Brown University Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Health Sciences Northeastern University Mission The mission of the Social Science Environmental Health Research Institute (SSEHRI) is to conduct social science=oriented research, teaching, community engagement, and policy work in the area of environmental health. SSEHRI continues the legacy of Dr. Brown’s Contested Illnesses Research Group at Brown University, which began in 2000, and has had a long history of social science= environmental health collaborations and extensive grant portfolio (including extensive collaborations with Silent Spring Institute). SSEHRI is a hub for collaborative environmental health learning and interest at NU. The Institute trains graduate students and postdocs for community based participatory research aimed at transforming and improving environmental health. At the same time, it provides faculty with a resource to further their existing efforts in those approaches. Integrating basic science, health science, sociology, science and technology studies, and community organizations, SSEHRI aims to develop novel approaches to studying environmental health questions, communication of environmental health data and conceptualization of environmental health socially, politically, and scientifically. A Great First Year of Our Existence We’re glad to share our many successes in this first year of SSEHRI. From our start in summer 2012, we have built a strong institute that now has 18 members: faculty, postdocs, and PhD students. Phil Brown and postdoc Bindu Panikkar came from Brown, faculty member Sara Wylie was hired at the beginning, Sociology PhD student Matt Judge joined at the outset, existing faculty members Len Albright, Daniel Faber, and Ron Sandler came on board, Brandeis faculty member Sara Shostak and University of Vermont postdoc Christine Vatovec brought their talents, postdoc Monica Ramirez= SSEHRI Social Science Environmental Health Research Institute

A Boston Natural Areas Network and Northeastern University Collaboration at the Highland Community Garden

Announcement 1, August 2013

Project Description

Activities To Date

The Social Science Environment Research Institute at Northeastern University is working with Boston Natural Areas Network (BNAN) to determine the concentration of certain elements (arsenic, lead, cadmium, and chromium) and selective beneficial minerals (selenium, potassium, calcium and magnesium) in the edible tissues of the vegetables that are commonly grown in the Boston area. With input from the community and BNAN, we are currently growing kale, green beans, lettuce, carrots, parsley, purslane, radishes, sweet peppers, tomatoes, hibiscus gherkin, turnips, cabbage and collards. We will also be attempting to develop low cost Do It Yourself tools for determining plant health and elemental levels using tools developed by Public Laboratory for Open Technology and Science. We will be co-designing informational materials as the project progresses and welcome everyone’s participation.

June 15 2013 Attended Highland Community Garden meeting, organized by Jeremy Dick.

June 20 2013

June 28 2013

June 26 2013

Planted kale, bush beans, lettuce, carrots,

parsley, purslane and radish.

Planted sweet peppers, tomatoes, gherkin and hibiscus. Then we added salt marsh hay to areas around the kale, lettuce, beans, tomatoes, hibiscus and peppers.

Attended Highland Community Garden meeting, organized by Mandy Townsend.

July 3 2013 Northeastern University students visited garden, took pictures of the plants with a regular camera and a modified camera that can see infrared light.

July 10 2013 Northeastern University students attempted to take pictures of garden plot with cameras attached to helium filled balloon.

July 16 2013 Planted turnips, cabbage and collards.
