DIRECTOR'S LETTER DIRECTOR'S LETTER I’m amazed to already be wrapping up my first year as Academic Director. It has been a year filled with the unexpected, but none of the challenges set us back. We have reached almost 2,000 students so far this year through our curricular and co-curricular programming. We are collaborating with partners both within and outside of the University, and we are engaging with new ideas to further our mission. Here are a few highlights from our semester so far, what we have planned for the rest of the Spring and a couple transition announcements among our staff. READ MORE> IN DEPTH IN DEPTH CORPORATE SUSTAINABILITY INVESTMENTS AND THE MARKET By Rachelle Sampson, Professor Robert H. Smith School of Business Does the ownerships status of a company affect its willingness to make sustainability-related investments? Maggie Zhou, Professor at the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, and I have begun to examine this question, focusing on difference between publicly and privately owned firms on three environmental variables: energy efficiency, toxic emissions and abatement spending. Our emphasis is whether and how much public ownership forces a short-term perspective on these variables, leading to reduced investment and environmental responsiveness. It’s the first on-site international project for CSVC’s award-winning ChangeTheWorld.org (CTW) Nonprofit Consulting Program. Program Director Pammi Bhullar led the multi-disciplinary team of four students – three pursuing their MBA and MS degrees from the Smith School and one working on a master of public policy - comprised of Rahul Shah, Nick Fu, Victoria Ryan, and Veena Thangavelu. The team conducted on-site interviews with the Tibetan Entrepreneurship Development Initiative, Tibetan entrepreneurs, school administrators and students at the Tibetan Children’s Village. To culminate their in-country experience, the team met with Prime Minister Lobsang Sangay who reinforced the importance of youth entrepreneurship in propelling the economic prosperity of the Tibetan people. The team presented their final recommendations discussed their experience at the ChangeTheWorld.org Symposium on April 21st. For more on this story, visit "News at Smith ," and to see pictures from the trip, visit our Facebook Album . STUDENTS SHINE AS SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS IN DO GOOD CHALLENGE FINALS University of Maryland students aiming to "do good" will present their exciting social venture ideas and do good projects live at the Do Good Challenge Finals on April 28! Six teams will compete for more than $20,000 in prizes in front of a live audience and panel of judges at the Riggs Alumni Center from 7:00pm-9:00pm. Ben Simon, co-founder and Executive Director of the Food Recovery Network - and first place winner of the inaugural 2012 Do Good challenge - will serve as one of the judges. The Do Good Challenge, presented by the School of Public Policy, the Smith School of Business, and Morgan Stanley Private Wealth Management is an annual competition that inspires students to advance their favorite social causes. Students fundraise, volunteer, spread awareness and start their own social ventures during the competition. Learn more about the finals here . STUDENTS DEVELOP BUSINESS PLAN TO RESTORE CHESAPEAKE BAY In Spring, 2015 the Center for Social Value Creation and the University of Maryland Environmental Finance Center established a joint student led Task Force charged with developing a detailed business plan focused on publicprivate financing to restore and protect the Chesapeake Bay. The Task Force is comprised of four Smith MBA’s and four Environmental Finance Center Project Assistants from the School of Public Policy. The team is guided and mentored by an Advisory Panel of experts from key disciplines and industries including: Public and private sector finance and banking; Science and ecological modeling; Institutional management and leadership; Environmental policy; and, Philanthropy, nonprofit management, and social value creation. In addition to presenting new public-private financing mechanisms for Bay restoration, the processes and models developed by the student team will have applicability and impact in watersheds across the region and the country. For more information, contact Pammi Bhullar . CHANGETHEWORLD SYMPOSIUM On Tuesday, April 21st CSVC hosted the ChangeTheWorld.org Nonprofit Consulting Program Symposium! Seventeen teams of undergraduate and graduate students showcased their findings and discussed their experiences in working with social enterprises and nonprofits throughout the region, and the world. The CTW Symposium is a fun, interactive experience that enables guests to speak with students and learn how classroom concepts are being to real-world business challenges through this award winning program. The event began with a presentation from CTW’s first on-site international consulting team who worked with Tibetan Youth in India, and then showcased 19 student teams. Interested in learning more? Over the last six years SES has become UMD's premiere event on social enterprise and social entrepreneurship, dedicated to exploring the connection between economic prosperity and lasting social and environmental change. This year we again drew students, faculty and staff from across the University of Maryland campus and beyond, and a dynamic morning keynote from TOMS helped kick things off on a high-note. The afternoon proved to be just as inspiring filled with energizing panels and empowering workshops. Allies from the School of Public Policy, the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, the College of Art & Humanities, and the Academy for Innovation and Entrepreneurship all invested time and talent to collaborate on this year’s event. The Symposium also featured a showcase of student-led social ventures competing in the Do Good Challenge and a series of short, high energy presentations by social entrepreneurs and changemakers. Learn more here and see the pictures from SES in our Facebook Album . UMD HOSTS THE ASHOKA U EXCHANGE The University of Maryland hosted the 2015 Ashoka U Exchange (Feb.26-28), the world’s largest convening for innovators embedding social entrepreneurship in higher education. The Exchange brought together constituents from 150 universities and 35 countries. CSVC led the UMD planning team for this exciting three-day event, along with partners from the Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership, the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, and the Academy for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. The Exchange featured President Wallace Loh, Provost May Ann Rankin and included presentations from 18 UMD faculty and staff – including everyone on the CSVC team! The Ashoka U Exchange provided an opportunity for UMD to showcase its campus-wide commitment to changemaking and social entrepreneurship, and served as a platform to bring UMD changemakers closer together. Learn more about the Ashoka U Exchange here . CSVC RECEIVES CORDES INNOVATION AWARD CVSC'S signature ChangeTheWorld.org Nonprofit Consulting Program (CTW) was awarded The AshokaU Cordes Innovation Award at the 2015 Ashoka U Exchage, distinguishing CTW as a high impact and highly replicable education innovation. CTW was one of six high impact 2015 awardees. Pammi Bhullar, Program Director of Experiential Learning at the Center for Social Value Creation presented on the program on Day 2 of the Ashoka U Exchange. Check out Pammi's presentation online , and learn more about the AshokaU Cordes Innovation Award . FROM THE BLOG : FROM THE BLOG : STORIES OF IMPACT: STUDYING SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP ABROAD For freshman Njeri Warrington, studying abroad seemed an elusive consideration for her senior year of college. But then she learned about the Maryland Social Entrepreneur Corps (MSEC) – an 8 week summer internship abroad focused on social entrepreneurship. MSEC sends undergraduate students to the Dominican Republic, Ecuador or Nicaragua to help combat poverty by supporting small community-based businesses. READ MORE> STORIES OF IMPACT: APASSION FOR PUBLIC HEALTH University of Maryland undergrad Hannah Breakstone attended the Social Enterprise Symposium twice prior to the 2014 Symposium, but this one was different. Breakstone, interested in a career in Public Health, was determined to network and meet people in the impact community. She connected with Robert Jordan, Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner, and became part of a multidimensional community development program in Ward 7. READ MORE>
