The Story
Waste and impact on the environment and how
buying Dirtball products will help keep plastic out of
Landfills and free up large areas of greenbelt land for
agricultural farming.
It takes 1/3 lb of agricultural chemicals to produce 1 standard cotton t-shirt.
Cotton requires 22,000 litres of water to produce
1 kilogram of cotton lint making it the most fresh
water intensive crop in the world.
Cotton uses some 25% of the world’s insecticides,
even though it is grown on 2.4% of the world’s land.
Cotton plants absorb most of the soils natural minerals,
once a cotton crop has finished virtually all nutrients
have been extracted from the soil.
3 billion plastic bottles recycled is the equivalent of saving over half a million barrels of oil and eliminating 400,000 tons of harmful air emissions which contribute to acid rain, global warming and smog.
Recycling post-consumer cotton helps to keep 5 billion pounds of waste from going into U.S. landfills.
By buying fabric made with recycled cotton, we reduce the effects of insecticides and other chemicals in our soil, air and water tables.
Recycled cotton doesn’t use the same level of manual labor or land use that is required for conventionally grown cotton.
Dirtball produce all garments as close to market territories as possible in order to reduce our carbon footprint.

The Process
The process involves bundling 1000’s of plastic
bottles, separating colours and chopping the material into fine flakes. These are
then melted down and extruded into yarn and blended with recycled
cotton scraps from post production sources.
The end result is a fabric that can vary in compostion
from 50% Cotton 50% plastic to 100% Plastic
which is branded as Greenspun *.
Every Dirtball T shirt contains at least 2 x 500ml plastic water bottles and our Shorts contain a minimum of 60 plastic bottles.
Dirtball strive to make all our products from 100% recycled materials from the fabric through to the buttons, labels, swing tags and even the thread that is used to stitch our garments together.
