Short-Term Disability
Works with other income benefits (e.g. Social

Employees may choose to use sick leave or receive the benefits
NOTE: Georgia Military College allows employees to use sick leave
during their waiting period, and then transition onto Short Term
Disability once their wait period has expired. If there is not enough
sick leave accumulated to use during their waiting period, the
employee will go on leave without pay the day the leave begins, or at
the time sick leave expires. Employees receiving short term disability
pay will be on leave status with the college.

Short-Term Disability Late Entrant
A current employee choosing STD coverage for the first time
or re-enrolling after discontinuing coverage is considered a late
entrant, unless a disability is caused by an accidental injury
Benefits for STD late entrants who become disabled due to
Physical Disease, Pregnancy, or Mental Disorder during the
12-month period after the effective date will not be eligible to
receive STD until after they have been disabled for 60 days

Short-Term Disability/Pre-existing Conditions
Short-Term Disability benefits will not be payable for a
disability resulting from a pre‑existing condition unless
the employee has been covered under the Short-Term
disability plan for twelve (12) consecutive calendar
months

Short-Term Disability Premiums
Premiums are waived as long as a benefit for short-
term disability is received
Benefits received from Short-Term disability are not
taxable
Premiums paid are an after tax deduction

Long-Term Disability
Works with other income benefits (e.g. Social Security, Workers’
Comp, State Retirement) to replace 60% of Benefit Salary up to
$5,000 per month
$100 minimum monthly benefit
180 calendar day elimination period
Max benefit period is to age 67, if disabled before age 61. After 61,
benefits are received on an Age Graded schedule Coordinate with Social Security Normal Retirement Age
No change on current employee claims; only claims initiated on or after January 1, 2013

Long-Term Disability
Maximum monthly benefit of twenty-four (24) months
shall be paid for mental disorders
Long-Term Disability benefits will not be allowed
unless the employee has been covered under the
Long-Term Disability plan for twelve (12) calendar
months

Disability Incentives
Work Incentive
• Work part-time while disabled (including elimination period)
• Receive work earnings & disability benefits
For STD: Max 80% of benefit salary
For LTD: Max 100% of benefit salary for first 24 months
Rehabilitative Incentive
• Participation in approved rehab program
• Disability benefit may increase by 10%
• Carrier works with doctor to decide training and therapy needed to
return to work
• Services include vocational assessment and job skill retraining

Disability Reminders
Medical Underwriting is not required for:
• Short-Term Disability
• Long-Term Disability (if an employee selects
coverage, when first eligible)
Long-Term Disability conversion is available for
employees who terminate for reasons other than
retirement from State service
