PRIMUS CLUB NEWSLETTER 18th. EDITION May 2013 1
As well as participating in all the usual activities at
Primus, members have had the opportunity to do
trampolining and horse riding during April and May.
There has also been a new trip to Chester races and a
beauty therapist now comes in to give us a variety of
treatments on Thursday afternoons.
Horse riding at Glen Jakes’
Riding School
by Liz
April 17th, 2013
Horse riding day had finally
arrived! Kathryn, Alison, Helen
and Jamie couldn’t wait to
get there and Philip B and
Heidi were looking forward to
watching.
The weather was perfect-not
raining and warm. One by
one the horses were saddled
up and each member fitted
with a riding hat. There was a
block which enabled riders to
get on to the horse easier.
When they were on the block
they then swung their legs
over the patient horses. Their
horses then walked slowly into
the arena. Their reins were held by the helpers.
The members’ faces were a
picture as they walked up
and down, round and
round. They then trotted and
gave ‘high fives’ to each
other!

A visit to ‘Jump Space’
by Pat R. April 8th,2013
Jamie, Kathryn and Wendy went to ‘Jump Space’ on April 8th. As well as trampolining members could use other apparatus like the ball pool and slide. There was also a sensory room. Jamie loved the vibrations and the fibre optic lights and lay on a large cushion watching the colours change. He also went on the swing.
Kathryn and Wendy enjoyed bouncing on a trampoline and sliding. All the members had a fantastic time and are looking forward to the next trip.

Gillian had meat balls.
Ken said ,”That is the

Anne’s steak was

Liz said, “It’s art on a plate.”
This was an excellent way to end a most
enjoyable course. Anne’s next advanced

June.
The Gym
by Peter W
Thursday outings to the
gym at the Seashell Trust
are still going well.
Unfortunately over the
past few weeks Ron and
Mary have not been joining
us for different reasons
but hopefully will both
soon be back.
In the meantime both of
our most recent members
(Maurice and Harry) are
still as keen as ever.
A couple of weeks ago Harry had himself
weighed and was very pleased to find out
that he had lost 9 pounds. I think we can all
say, “Well done and keep up the good work.”
Advanced Cook-ery Class
Angela, Mary, Gillian and Paul have completed the advanced cookery class with Anne. The final part of the course was to sample a ‘fine dining’ ex-perience at the restaurant ‘Gusto’ in Cheadle Hulme.

Celebrations at Primus
At Primus we like to celebrate different
occasions and
festivals.
For Easter we
made bonnets.
We also
decorated
Easter buns.
We made flags
for St George’s
Day.
And some
members were
happy at their

success!
We had
fun on Red

The Sewing Group
by Janice
The sewing group goes from strength to
strength. There are 8 regulars—Emma,
Jamie, Jennifer,
Heidi, Deborah,
Susan W, Helen,
and Susan C. When
everyone is there it
is a bit of a squash
but we enjoy being cosy together and
chatting while we sew. I am always
grateful for anyone who comes to help
us especially if they
can thread a needle!
Heidi and Jennifer
made a framed Spring
picture of a rabbit
on a bluebell field.
Currently there are
several projects on
the go. Some people
are still finishing
their teddy bear
scarves which have
been very popular.
The butterfly
shoulder bag,
complete with zip
has been another
popular project and
gave people a chance
to use the sewing
machine.
The latest project is
an apron with a
pocket shaped like a duck. It should come
in useful for afternoon tea!

Art Therapy classes by Yvonne
Primus
penguins in Paradise
Well, the big canvas arrived and the job of think-ing of something to paint on it started. Af-ter lots of wonderful ideas and laughter we all decided on ‘Primus penguins in Paradise’. Each penguin is the fingerprint of a Primus member. The Thursday group also painted the beau-tiful holiday back-ground. Primus pen-guin is on holiday with lots of his friends. You can find him because he is the one wearing an orange scarf. There are juggling penguins, trampolining penguins, and penguins just relaxing. Can you find him? The members who join Yvonne Porter’s Thursday therapy group have contrib-uted to the art work.
Yvonne would like to say a BIG thank you to Gillian, Jane A, Heidi, Phil Taylor (volunteer) and Maura for all the smiles,
laughter and giggles that came with this painting.
Reiki by Karen-Louise
Reiki is a Japanese technique for reducing stress. It is done by ‘laying on hands’ and promotes healing and relaxation. After a treatment a glowing sensation flows through you. Why not ask Karen-Louise for a treatment?
Primus Discussion Group
by Jane
Bring your ideas and opin-ions to the table and let’s share them. It’s a great opportunity to chat with members you don’t usually sit with. Come and learn about subjects you don’t usually take an interest in and there’s a ’cuppa and a biscuit’ to go with it.
The discussion group meets on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and is led by a member of staff, volunteer or student.

Holistic and Beauty Therapy by Pat
Welcome to Wendy our new therapist. She offers lots of different holistic and beauty therapies. At the moment she is here on Thursdays from 1pm. If you are around on Thursdays feel free to ask her about treatments. Ask Primus staff if you would like to book one. Treatments include eyelash tinting and eye-brow shaping, waxing, pedicures and manicures, wax treatment for rheumatism and arthritis, facials and massages. If you are not at Primus on Thursdays ask for a leaflet anyway. Why not give your mum or carer a treat and a cream tea at Primus too? Photography

The photography project is going well. A member who comes just on a Wednesday session to learn about digital photography went out and about in Stockport with Liz. He took some exceptional photos on his first day.
Competition! Write down the names of these 5
places and give them

Friday May 31st.
On his next visit instead of taking pictures he asked if I would show him how to transfer photos onto a PC and how to name and re-name photos organising them into a folder. The photos for the members’ board are also being up-dated with the help of Carol B.

Music at Primus by Mary S
There is lots of music going on at Primus! The choir rehearses every Friday after lunch. The members are John, Philip, Colin, Harry, Deb-orah, Paul Natalie and Alison. Some staff at Disability Stockport have asked to join the group. On Friday May 10th, the choir sang some songs for the rest of Primus which everyone really enjoyed. David ably supports this group, singing and playing his guitar. We are planning to get a programme together so that we can go out and perform at other Day Centres and Care Homes. If you would like to join the choir, have a chat with Mary S. You will be invited to listen to a rehearsal and to join in. You will then need to decide if this is for you (or not) as you will have to attend a rehearsal every week and will need to learn the songs for concerts. Talk to other choir members as well. We have a lot of fun but it is quite hard work. Alison said, “Choir is fun. I like the warm -ups” Phil thinks it’s excellent . “I’m looking forward to the Christmas Carol Service already.” Natalie said, ”It’s good fun. My favourite song is ‘Side by Side’. I never stop grinning.”
Music Taster Group
Two groups of Primus members have com-pleted their Music Taster Course. There were 5 in each group and another 5 members started on May 17th. The classes are on Fridays from 1:30—2:00 Each course (lasting 6 weeks) includes some singing, an introduction to playing tuned and untuned percussion instruments, composing and listening to a variety of music. Members who have completed a taster course will be invited to a further follow-up course if they would like to do this. If you would like to try out a taster course let Mary know as this could be arranged if enough members want to experience it. This is what some members had to say … Gillian said, ”I really enjoyed the course and got a lot out of it.” Paula said, “It gave me confidence in my singing.” Carol B (who wrote a poem after listening to some music in the class), said, “I found it an interesting experience and enjoyable. It boosted my confidence.” Alison said, “I loved the chance to play the chime bars and sing. It was brilliant.” Linda liked playing the keyboard.
Music and Movement Mike runs a music and movement group on Tuesday mornings. All the exercises are chair based so that everyone can participate.

A visit to the ‘Puss in Boots’ by Peter W
March 14th, 2013
On March 14th, myself and Karen-Louise accompanied Helen B, Emma, Shona, Angela, Jane G and Steve S to the ’Puss in Boots’. We left Primus at 11:30 on a ’Ring and Ride’ bus. Steve and Joan Timlin joined us shortly after we had ar-rived. We were not seated in our usual spot as there was a large party already there, but we were well looked after.
As usual Steve Timlin was on fine form
with his jokes and
after our first
course a friendly
arm-wrestling
match broke out
between Karen-
Louise and Steve
Smith. Several of
our party indulged
in scrummy looking
desserts.
Afterwards we
enjoyed chatting
until the

think we were all surprised that she
managed to eat it. I’ve got a good appe-

well. They went on a ‘Ring and Ride’ bus.
After a meal everyone had a good look
round the store which was very
accessible with lifts to every floor.
Shona bought some felt tip pens and
some biscuits for Isla, her niece. She
loved the different coloured lamps, the
scented candles and brightly coloured
rugs. Paula looked at the furniture and
got some ideas for her new bedroom.

A visit to the Craft fair by Karen-Louise and Mary S
May 2nd, 2013
On Thursday May 2nd, Mary S, Gillian, and April went with Karen-Louise, Janice (the sewing teacher), Yvonne (the art therapist), and Phil (a volunteer) to the Craft Fair at the old G Mex in Alan’s taxi.
We had lunch when we arrived and we got a very good deal on the tickets as we went in. We split up to look round as we all had different things we wanted to look at. Phil helped April, Yvonne was with Gillian and Karen–Louise paired up with Mary. We more or less got the items we wanted to purchase but agreed that a longer time there would have been useful, to take greater advantage of the displays and workshops. It was very valuable being able to chat to-gether about all the creative pro-jects we cover in Primus between us especially as Yvonne and Janice for example come into Primus on different days. Similarly Mary appreciated getting to know what Janice does with her group. It was good to exchange ideas and we would all like the opportunity to this again. Janice said there was lots to look at and she purchased some lovely felt. April picked up some great bargains including ‘peel offs’ for card making and some origami kits. Yvonne said she had a really nice day and felt that the exhibition was easy to get round. She appreciated us spending the
time together. Mary bought some practical items such as cellophane bags for cards and some lovely blank cards for the card –making classes at Primus. Karen-Louise and Mary man-aged to fit in a quick neck and head mas-sage (which was on offer in aid of charity ) before we returned to Primus.
Volunteers and students
Sonya the co-ordinator for volunteers at Primus says...”I am really enjoying my posi-tion. Since my last write up we have two new volunteers, Zowie and John. Zowie tells me she is loving being a volunteer and goes home with a smile on her face each time she comes. Once again, thank you to all the volunteers.”
Being a volunteer by Heather Moir
Having passed Primus numerous times I thought it a fantastic place in which to do some voluntary work. I have been helping the members with art work, jigsaws and playing games like dominoes. I also wash the pots and make drinks. I’ve sat talking to people keeping conversation going. I’ve discovered that disabled people can achieve a lot by adapting the ways in which they do things. I’ve also learned that sitting and talking to people can brighten their day. I think that maybe everybody should do-nate some time to do voluntary work. Primus is a brilliant place in which to volunteer.
The dynamic duo!

My Aunty by Philip B
My aunty was a lovely lady who lived in a
cottage near the Woodley canal. My mum
used to take me and my brother to see
her when we were little and we would
pick blackberries there. We were always
spoiled by her. We would see Uncle Les
too. There was also Gemma the dog, Fred
the cat and a tortoise. The tortoise was
the nicest thing going.
Alice would make me sandwiches and cups
of coffee when I got older.
Eventually she had to go into a home in
Glossop, She died recently at the age of
90. I was upset but I also have lovely
thoughts of her.

Hooray! Spring is here
by Carol Boyd
Deep under the soil, flowers
begin to shoot up from nowhere. Green tips
push through the soil at first. Snowdrops
pop up here and there and the bright yellow
daffodils stand and stare. Tulips stretch up-
right and look like a bright rainbow of colour
following in their shadow. In the fields dai-
sies begin to line the grassy meadows with
buttercups to follow on. Crocuses have pre-
viously made a purple carpet with their
pointed petals. The bluebells nod - but
cannot play tunes!
Later, roses will bloom in different shades
and sizes, but watch out for their sharp
thorns! And on the pond water lilies gently
float as 7 swans swim by.
The Witch ’ s Magical Broomstick
by Carol Boyd
Florence was a witch who needed a new
broom-
stick so
the very
next
morning
she went
to the
witch ’ s
broom shop called ‘ M r Sweeps, the
broomstick maker.’
As she opened the door a magical step
popped out to test if she was a real witch
and to check her identity. Florence then
stepped into the shop and the door closed
behind her with a bang. Mr Sweep said,
“ H ello Florence. ” As he climbed down his
step-ladder, Florence asked, “ Is my
broomstick here? ”
Mr Sweep said, “ I will go and have a
look for you in my cupboard. ” He came
back a few minutes later with a large
box. “ I think you will find it in here. ”
Florence opened the box with
excitement. “ Oh, my broom! ” she
shouted out. Suddenly another voice
bellowed out from the box, “ Oh
Florence, we are re-united together. I
thought I had lost you forever when you
dropped me in the street. I fell out of
your coat pocket. I tried to shout you but
you could not hear me because of the
noisy traffic zooming by. It ’ s lucky that
Mr Sweep picked me up and took me to
his shop. I have been waiting for you to
come and get me.”
Next door, Mr Flicker, the candle –stick
maker was designing a new candle.
Florence went to pick up her new candle
-stick. Then she flew home on her
broom, her candle-stick safely in the box
which was strapped to it.
Back home at last, Florence muttered
some magical words and the front door
opened. She walked in and put the box
on the table. Her broom stood in the
corner of the room smiling to itself and
thinking how nice it was to be home
again .

My wife Beverley has been as happy as a

planting flowers and vegetables. She is so
incredibly neat and tidy I have now lost my
place in the greenhouse where Bev and Mr

now reign supreme.
I am also demoted to labourer at the

onions, garlic, asparagus, artichokes,
cabbages, potatoes, courgettes, tomatoes,
herbs and all sorts of flowers. Bev has green

what happened to me.

April was almost entirely without rain and
very warm. Walking with Khush the dog along
the river bank I saw a flash of purple still a
good way ahead of me. As I got closer I
thought it might be a hyacinth escaped from
the garden but as I got closer still I could
see it was a small clump of orchids. With
dark spotted green leaves and the most
luminous purple flowers it was easy to spot
when I checked my books back home. The
Early Purple Orchid, well named on all
counts. Other finds have been Lady’s

Marsh Marigold, Butter Burr and a good few

The other morning
having woken
much earlier than I would have liked, I
found myself lying in bed watching the sun-
rise through the bedroom window.
Immediately opposite the house from this
window is a low saddle of hills which at that
moment were dun-coloured and indistinct.
All around the sky was like a purple-
streaked painting by Monet. Then very
slowly, a hint of grey and cream emerged
and began to grow. This then changed to
horizontal streaks of pale yellow– and if you
forgive the continued
allusion to great painters – as if WM Turner
wanted to get in on the act of painting the
dawn sky. The streaks became stronger and
the purple turned to lilac and then a deeper
blue. Finally , the pale yellow turned to

A Tour of The Western Isles Part 4
By Karen-Louise MacKenzie
Harris and Lewis
We arrived at the campsite, which seemed rather crowded with lots of motor homes and tents, but had a gorgeous beach. Because we had a Jeep, we could put it into 4 wheel drive and drive onto the beach where we set up camp, checking that we
were well above the tide line of course! We had gorgeous views from inside the
tent! We cooked our scallops and enjoyed our tea, though because I was so tired, I ended up dropping a few in the sand! I cleaned the shells by scrubbing them with sand and sea water and put them in the bucket. The following morning we had breakfast and set off to see the stones of Calanais (pronounced Callaneesh) on the Isle of Lewis. We climbed higher and higher into the mountains on a single track road through a strange but beautiful landscape. On the way we saw a little place that had a photography exhibition and stopped to have a look.
The building, which looked like a large shed at the bottom of someone’s garden, also served as a Presbyterian church and a Catholic church! They were offering free tea, coffee and cake, but we left a donation.
My Cousin’s Dog by Philip
Jasper is nearly 1. His dad is a working Cocker Spaniel and his mum is a Sussex Spaniel. Both his parents and grandparents were winners at Crufts. He loves to jump up and lick people.
