ABOUT THE PROgRAM

The University of South Alabama Center for Strategic Health Innovation (USA CSHI) is pleased to announce the 2009-2010 Advanced Regional Response Training Center program (ARRTC 2010). This program is made possible by a grant from the Alabama Department of Public Health, Center for Emergency Preparedness through a cooperative agreement from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response. In light of the on-going and continued threats of infectious disease outbreaks, natural disasters, and terrorist attacks, it is apparent, if not critical, that education and preparedness training continue to be a priority. ARRTC 2010 is an updated comprehensive approach to all-hazards disaster preparedness and response training. This all-inclusive curriculum has been designed to teach and train effective collaborative healthcare community response to any disaster, natural or man-made, and has been updated to incorporate current challenges and issues facing disaster leadership. Participants will leave with the skills needed to go back to their community, facility, and/or workplace and teach others what they have learned, and to serve as effective leaders in disaster response.

For those who have never attended an ARRTC session, ARRTC 2010 will provide a basic, core knowledge of their job in an emergency, how to do it, how to make the best decisions, how to communicate needs and offers of assistance, and what the roles and responsibilities of others are in disaster response. For those who have attended previous sessions, ARRTC 2010 will provide a forum for knowledge exchange, reinforce lessons learned, and share recent updates.

Building upon the successes of the past six years, ARRTC 2010 is designed for individuals charged with disaster response leadership for their organization. A variety of critical and timely issues will be covered such as Incident Command Systems (ICS), National Incident Management System (NIMS), Infectious Disease Update, and Surge Capacity Issues. This year two courses will be offered: ARRTC Basic and ARRTC Road Show.

CEUs fOR ARRTC BASiC AND ROAD SHOw:CEUs will be provided and sponsored by the USA College of Nursing. Alabama RNs need to bring their license cards to registration each day of training. ARRTC Basic – 15.9 hours; ARRTC Road Show – 6.3 hours.

The following disciplines will also be awarded Continuing Education credits, authorized by their Boards of the State of Alabama: EMS, Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, Physicians, Respiratory Therapists, Social Workers, Nursing Home Administrators and Assisted Living Administrators.

CMEs fOR ARRTC BASiC AND ROAD SHOw:“The University of South Alabama is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.”

“The University of South Alabama designates ARRTC Basic for a maximum of 13.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™, and ARRTC Road Show for a maximum of 5.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.”

CEUs and CMEs

ARRTC BASiCPROgRAM DESCRiPTiON: ARRTC Basic is a two-day course primarily designed for those who have never attended an ARRTC class. Twelve (12) ARRTC Basic sessions will be offered on site at USA CSHI, in Mobile, Alabama. The goal of the training is to provide regional response partners with basic, core disaster response training. Attendees will learn the basics of regional disaster response; how to do it, how to make the best decisions, how to communicate needs and offers of assistance, and the roles and responsibilities of others in disaster response. ARRTC Basic is “regional” training and offers unique advantages to attendees. Attendees will be trained away from home, in a neutral site and away from the disruptions of their day-to-day responsibilities and duties. Also, because training is scheduled by hospital planning region, there will be opportunities to meet and interact with their regional response partners. If you have attended a previous ARRTC Level I or Basic training, the content is current and timely, but does not represent a significant change from previous topics. Key topics include: Intro to Incident Command System (ICS), National Incident Management System (NIMS), Update on NIMS Requirements; National Response Framework (NRF), Independent Study (IS) 100, 200, 700, 800; Hazard Threat and Vulnerability Assessment and Disaster Response Plans; Surge Capacity and Resource Management; Altered Standards of Care During Disasters; Alabama Incident Management System (AIMS)-Applications & Public Health Response; Chemical Awareness; Radiological Awareness; Biological Awareness and Naturally Occurring Infectious Diseases; Decontamination and PPE; Rapid Assessment and Disaster Triage Methods; and Continuity of Operations Planning (COOP).
