Discipline changes at Century, Fall 2008
• SPCH to COMM• NSCI to ESCI
• Change text in all programs• Change all Accept/Reject lines
• SPCH to COMM in active A lines• Keep “old” SPCH courses below the $ pseudo
• Convert Table SPCH**** to COMM**** NSCI**** to ESCI****
Change Exceptions. Change discipline in Course and Replacement Course fields for CA, CD, CE.
Do not use Convert Table. Either discipline will match. New discipline in active A line and old discipline below $ pseudo line.
Build each SPCH/COMM as a D String Table. Courses will match interchangeably but will not count twice.
Exception coding, involving these courses, no longer works! Courses are CONVERTED via the Convert Table before they hit the exceptions.
• Change Exceptions Pros – Fields can be changed programmatically by
the Office of the Chancellor DARS Team. Cons – Pseudos in exceptions fields (ex. SPCHT017)
should not be changed if disciplines in TA tables will not be changed.
• Do not use Convert Table Pros – Avoid the exception coding problem. Cons – DARS would not identify repeats.
Student could receive credit for the same course.
(Example- SPCH1031 and COMM1031.)
• D String Table Cons – Lack of experience with string tables,
unexpected and difficult to diagnose problems.
• Quickest and most straightforward solution.• Printed Exception Report for CE, CA, CD• Identified 243 exceptions potentially affected
by discipline change, SPCH to COMM.• DARS Team at OOC changed fields
programmatically.• Tested random selection of exception coding.
• Pseudos, such as SPCHT017, should not have been changed. • DARS Team at OOC offered to
reverse entire process. • Reviewed Exception Report again.• Identified 84 entries using pseudos
and changed them back manually.
