• When a result is found, the researcher needs to be directed quickly and reliably to the corresponding record in the host institution’s library catalog

• This is working well for some institutions in the artlibraries.net WorldCat target, not working well for others

Linking to Library Catalogs

Page 20: Discipline-specific discovery

The world’s libraries. Connected.

Causes of library catalog link problems:

• The WorldCat Registry does not have a current URL for the library catalog

• OCLC numbers are not present in the library catalog for matching

• Other matching identifiers (ISBNs, etc.) are not available in the library catalog, or not in synch with WorldCat

Linking to Library Catalogs

Page 21: Discipline-specific discovery

The world’s libraries. Connected.

Remedies for library catalog link problems:

• Maintaining library catalog URLs in the WorldCat Institution Registry

• Providing search access to OCLC numbers in the library catalog

• Synchronizing library catalog records with WorldCat

artlibraries.net members and their representation in WorldCat

An analysis

Page 23: Discipline-specific discovery

The world’s libraries. Connected.

• An “Art Libraries in WorldCat” target has been added to artlibraries.net

• It uses the WorldCat Search API, and the same institutions searched in the OCLC prototype

• 32 institutions are in this WorldCat/artlibraries.net target

• Of those, 14 are artlibraries.net members, 18 are not

• The “Art Libraries in WorldCat” target provides access to about 8.4M WorldCat records

• There are 50 institutions in artlibraries.net that are not represented in its “Art Libraries in WorldCat” target

• 14 of these institutions have holdings in WorldCat, representing an additional 14M records

• Another 36 artlibraries.net member institutions are not yet represented in WorldCat

Collection analysis

Compare collection – within the group & globally – By subject, classification, format, language, publication date range

– Determine uniqueness, rareness

– Supports re-location, purchase, digitisation decisions

Next Steps

Page 35: Discipline-specific discovery

The world’s libraries. Connected.

• 32 libraries already loaded in WorldCat

• 90 days or fewer from receipt of good MARC file

• Other formats (Intermarc, Unimarc, Pica+) possible – extra work needed – further discussion

• Maintenance (regular batchloading)

Loading logistics

Page 36: Discipline-specific discovery

The world’s libraries. Connected.

• Libraries can continue to use WC-API in local portals or in local discovery solutions (part of subscription model)

• Libraries could opt for WorldCat Local (including interoperation to local systems)

• Special projects and extra work open for discussion

Further

Page 37: Discipline-specific discovery

The world’s libraries. Connected.

• Agreement with artlibraries.net about a further model

• Group-catalogue with libraries already represented in WorldCat

• Branding of this group catalogue

• Discussion about a price-model

• Step by step addition of “new” art-libraries

Possible way forward
