Welcome to Second Grade!

Mrs. Eschlers disclosure

Dear Parents,I am excited to welcome you and your student to my 2nd grade class at Bluff Ridge Elementary. I hope that you had a wonderful summer break and am ready for a fantastic 2015-2016 school year. Here are a few items that I feel are important for you to be aware of. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me any time. I will be at the school Monday thru Friday from 8:00-4:00.School Phone: 801-402-2850Direct to Room: 801-402-4407My Cell Phone: 801-791-7825E-mail Address: [email protected] Classroom Web Site: http://mrseschlersclass.blogspot.com/

Communication: We have a classroom blog. This is how I will do most of our communication. Weekly the newsletter, spelling and vocabulary will be uploaded by Saturday, and as needed fun stuff is added of what is going on in our classroom. There is also a copy of the discloser and some fun links for parents and students to use for home resources. Classroom DoJo allows for messaging regarding behavior and other timely issues. I hope you find I am quick and thorough in my responses.

Attendance: The first school bell rings at 8:35 am and the tardy bell rings at 8:40 am. School is dismissed at 3:30 pm Monday through Thursday. Friday is our early out day and students are dismissed at 1:15 pm. There are also early out days during the first week of school and conference weeks. Please help your child be on time to class! Children will not be allowed in the classroom until 8:35 am, (except during inclement weather, then students are allowed to be in the school in the gym or in the commons area). If you need to take your child out of class, please check him/her out in the office and they will call for him/her to be excused. I want to thank you in advance for helping me follow this important safety protocol! When students leave at the end of the day, please have a meeting place where they are to meet you or whomever they go home with. Please have your child walk to and from school with another child. Our school has a goal of 95% attendance every day. Please try to schedule all appointments and family time during track breaks. Students get sick, and they will need some days set aside for that.

Weekly Homework booklet (Math and Language): A booklet is provided to your child and has your childs name on the front; there will be a new booklet each quarter. This booklet will be sent home on Friday afternoon and needs to be brought back to school the following Friday morning. Students will earn up to six stamps each week (1 per page) and can earn a small treat.

Nightly Reading: The reading graphs are included in the weekly homework booklet. These are filled out weekly and brought back on Fridays completed in the homework book. The recommendation for time spent on homework each night in second grade is 20-30 minutes. I do not want homework to become excessive or stressful for your child. If this ever becomes a problem, please let me know so we can find an alternative. When students bring back their reading slips filled out, they will move their mini me to new community, state, nation, and countries. There will be a goal for each quarter and students who reach the reading goal will get to attend a party at the end of each quarter.

Daily Homework:Work that is not finished in class will be sent home to be completed as homework, the day that it is not complete. All work given in class is expected to be completed in class. Full credit cannot be given on unfinished work.

Birthdays: Your child is welcome to bring a treat for his or her birthday. He or she will be recognized by the class at the end of school day. If we are off track during your childs birthday, we will celebrate it either before or after the break.

Star of the Week:I like to make your child feel like an important part of our class so I will be highlighting each child as "STAR OF THE WEEK."During this week the featured child will be given a poster to fill out and will be put in the hallway in our "STAR OF THEWEEK"board. Your child may also bring in items that they treasure on Monday of his or her week. They may include a favorite toy, animal, doll, game, awards, book, tape, treat, or anything that tells a little more ABOUT THEM. I try to have their week around their birthday. I will send home a note to remind your child to bring his or her items for their week.

Lockers:Eachchild will be assigned a locker number and will use that number the entire year. All items will need to be taken out of the lockers each time we go off track. No otherlockswill be allowed on the lockers.

Book Orders:Please encourage your child to read at home. Having interesting books on hand is the best way to do this. To encourage books in the home, we will be participating in several reading clubs. An order form will come home about once a month. There is no obligation or pressure to buy anything ever. This is offered as a service to you because the prices are very reasonable. Also, with every book order our class gets a free book or two. I would like to build a large library in our room for free reading time. Children will never be pressured to buy, nor will they receive rewards for ordering. Please do what is best for you and your child. It is an easy and free way to get things for the children to enjoy in the classroom. If you ever tire of books that you have at home, please feel free to donate them to our class. We would LOVE them!!!

Helpful Hints: I would appreciate it if you would label sweaters, jackets, coats, hats, boots, backpacks, lunch boxes, or any other items that could possibly be lost at school. When sending money to school with your child for lunch, book orders, pictures, donations, etc., please place it in an envelope and label the front with your childs name and what the money is for.

Parties: We will have parties for Halloween, Christmas, Valentines Day, and one other. The room helpers will plan and run these parties with assistance as needed from me. A sheet will be provided for you to sign up to be a room parent or volunteer.

Grading: Grades will be put in as they are scored, but most of our scores are on Friday. I do not grade every assignment, to allow students the chance to practice and master a concept before I hold them accountable for a grade. Students are always welcome to redo an assignment or a test they feel they can do better on. I am more concerned with mastering a concept than holding students accountable for a one time score. If you ever have any questions about grades, please let me know.

Volunteering in the classroom:We love having our parents volunteer! Because our activities require complete engagement, I do ask that siblings not accompany you when you come to help in the classroom. This allows our students to have your complete attention, free from any distractions. There are also times when headcount is communicated for activities and we certainly don't want anyone to be left out. Parents in the classroom are highly valued and we know that sometimes finding child care can be difficult so please keep this in mind when signing up to volunteer with us.

Toys:No toys, games, and/or electronics should be brought to school. If they are, these items will be taken and returned to parents onlytoy/games can be brought ONLY on special occasions, which I will always let you about know beforehand.

Supply List: Any of the items needed for school are provided by the school district or me. Each student will receive 2 pencils and eraser, wipe board marker, and one box of 24 crayons. Scissors and a ruler will be provided when needed. At the beginning of each term, I give each student a new pencil and dry erase marker. Please do not bring Trapper Keepers or big binders. I also do not allow the students to write with pens. Students who continuously properly and respectfully use supplies I provide, I will continue to provide for. Students who are misusing or destroying supplies will have a note sent home asking for items to be replaced.
