VON nestles between Hwy. 50 and the hills of historic Choteau Creek and is a hunter’s haven, especially during pheasant season. Founded in 1900 when the railroad pushed through the area, this friendly community offers many serv- ices. e city park has RV hook-ups, picnic facilities, a swimming pool and a playground. North Vue Motel provides comfort- able rooms as well as RV hook-ups. Vintage buildings include the Queen Anne style Greenfield House (personal residence) and the Wesleyan Methodist Church in whose manse former Senator George McGovern was born. e church building now serves as the Avon Historical Museum. W A COTLAND began as an 1870 stagecoach stop and an 1880 train terminus. Historic treas- ures abound in the three-building Heritage Museum. One of the buildings, an 1872 Methodist Church, was built from native chalkstone, quarried nearby. Other historical sights include over 100 buildings on the National Historic Register and pioneer monuments in Rose Hill Cemetery. Outdoor activities include a beautiful 9-hole golf course and a spacious park with swimming, picnicking, tennis, basketball and more. Campground offers water and electric. Just outside of town, Lake Henry provides excellent fishing, boating, hiking and hunting opportunities. Tours of the Broin Ethanol Plant are also available. Scotland rodeo grounds is home to the annual “Scottie Stampede Rodeo”, held each August. S PRINGFIELD was founded in 1870 as a steamboat stop on the Missouri River. Springfield’s golf course is perched on bluffs overlooking the Missouri National Recreational River where boaters, canoers/ kayakers, hunters and anglers play. Terrace Park offers breathtaking views of the river, plus hiking/biking trails. Springfield State Recreation Area, located on the shores of Lewis and Clark Lake, features a campground, boat ramps and paved bike trail that connects to town. Scenic drives include Apple Tree Road and the Bottom Road to Running Water through ideal birdwatching habitat. Chief Standing Bear Bridge spans the Missouri near Running Water and has a scenic lookout with markers documenting Lewis and Clark’s exploration of the area more than 200 years ago. e area’s rich history is also preserved in the Running Water and Springfield Museums. e 4th of July celebration includes an annual Bull-O- Rama, Frog Queen and frog jumping contest. S ABOR is the Czech capitol of South Dakota. Each year in June, Tabor hosts Czech Days, a huge heritage celebration complete with polka music, folk dancing, royalty, Czech foods, parades and more. Tour the Czech Pioneer Mini Village, Blachnik Museum and St. Wences- laus Catholic Church, built in 1899. e adjacent cemetery dates back to 1868 with many tombstones in Czech. A few miles from town, the Bon Homme National Cemetery overlooks peaceful panoramas of the Missouri River and contains time worn graves of some of Gen. Custer’s men who were on their way to the Little Big Horn in 1873. Nearby is the location of the first schoolhouse built in Dakota Territory. Log replica has been built on the site (pictured on front). Cogan House B&B, on a bluff overlooking the river, offers lodging, hunting, fishing and an amazing view. For a quiet retreat with scenic views, follow the winding road back to Tabor Recreation Area, a secluded primitive campground and picnic area on the shores of Lewis & Clark Lake. T YNDALL was founded in 1879 along the railroad and became the county seat in 1885. Hometown charm abounds on the quaint Main Street business district which includes a bakery that has been in operation for over 80 years, an old-fashioned Barber Shop and the Art & Antique Gallery. Stop by the historic 1917 Carnegie Library and the Eiffel Tower replica in front of the Courthouse. Relax at the public park where you can play disc golf, swim, walk on the trail and picnic. e Bon Homme Heritage Museum is housed in an 1885 church building.
