Polonnaruwa, whose Hindu and Buddhist archaeology are well preserved and awe-inspiring. We'll take in Kandy, a charming Sri Lanka town set beside a lake, and home to the gold-roofed Temple of the Tooth, which contains a tooth of Buddha collected at his funeral pyre. We'll travel to the remote jungle village of Dambana to meet and interact with Sri Lanka's community of indigenous inhabitants, the "Veddas" (or forest-dwellers), a direct line of descendants from the island's original Neolithic community dating from at least 16,000 BC. Amazing! Then, we'll hop on board a scenic railway journey bound for Sri Lanka's hill country as we weave through lush, green tea estates on our way to partake in a "Tea Experience" the following day, sampling different teas with a tea sommelier! Take a safari in Sri Lanka in search of leopards and elephants? YES! In 4X4 vehicles, we will safari in Yala National Park to find the largest density of wild leopards in the world, herds of elephant, and the endangered Black-necked Stork. We're in for a treat because in Minneriya National Park, from August - October, there is the awesome wildlife spectacle called "the Gathering," the largest seasonally recurring concentration of wild elephants found in the world! Maybe hop over to the Maldives for a few days R&R?

Passports and Visa

Citizens of the United States must possess a valid passport for travel to Sri Lanka, good for 6 months beyond your intended stay. If you do not have a passport, please APPLY NOW! When you have your passport photographs taken, you should get extra photos: even though you need just one passport-size photo when you apply for each visa, you should always carry 2-3 EXTRA photos, just in case an emergency arises (i.e. in case your passport/visa is stolen). If you already have a passport, make sure that your passport is valid for a minimum of 6 months beyond your departure date in Sri Lanka (August 12, 2016), and that you have a minimum of 2 blank facing pages for each visa. Sri Lanka visas can now be applied for online through the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, which was introduced recently to grant prior approval instead of getting them on arrival at the point of entry in Sri Lanka. What is an ETA? ETA is an official authorization for a Short Visit to Sri Lanka and is issued electronically. The ETA is introduced with the intention of providing an efficient, reliable and simplified service to those who visit Sri Lanka. ETA holders will be issued a 30 day Short Visit visa at the port of entry in Sri Lanka. The cost of getting your Sri Lanka visa online by Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is $30 U.S. Dollars. An ETA holder is entitled to enter Sri Lanka within three months from the date of issue of ETA. This means, do not apply for your online visa until AFTER Mid-May, 2016. The ETA is issued through an on-line system. No passport copies, documents or photographs are required. On arrival at the port of entry in Sri Lanka, produce your passport to the immigration officer at the port of entry to obtain the necessary clearance. You must bring a copy of the ETA approval notice along with you. How to get your Sri Lanka Visa Log onto http://www.eta.gov.lk/slvisa/ Once approved, you will receive an ETA approval notice allowing a stay of up to 30 days from the date of entry into Sri Lanka. Here is a sample of what the ETA application looks like online, and the questions it asks:

Keeping Healthy and Health Insurance

Although no special vaccinations are required for travel to Sri Lanka, we recommend that you be up to date for the following vaccines: tetanus, typhoid, hepatitis A and B. Please consult your personal physician, local health department, travel clinic, or immunization center about any vaccinations you may need to update, or others that may be personally recommended for you based on your age, health, and past vaccination history. If you are traveling from a destination infected by Yellow Fever, you will be required to present proof of vaccination (don't worry if you are coming from the U.S.). Your best defense to avoid mosquito borne-diseases (malaria and dengue fever) is through the use of a very good insect repellent which contains Deet. You MUST have your own health insurance and be in very good physical condition to participate in this trip. This is an active holiday, and we rate it as Moderate. Trips of this designation offer moderate physical challenges, and for this trip you should be able to walk/hike from 2-5 miles. Visits to temples, museums, and excavations involve a considerable amount of walking, some of which may be in hot weather.

DAY 4

Tuesday, August 2 Exploring Colorful Colombo, Sri Lanka After an early breakfast we meet our local Colombo city guide for a wonderful walk hosted by Mark Forbes of Colombo City Walks. Colombo is the commercial capital of Sri Lanka and the country's largest city, an interesting blend of varying influences over 600 years. Almost one million people, out of the entire 20 million person population of Sri Lanka, reside in Colombo, and the country prides itself on having one of the

highest literacy rates in Asia. The people of Sri Lanka are of diverse races and faiths, with the majority being Sinhalese, mainly Buddhists, but who harmonize with the Tamils, Muslims, Burghers and other ethnic groups. Although well on the road to modernization, the country and its people still cherish their traditional values and take pride in their rich culture, an aspect that continues to attract visitors. Mark takes us to the heart of the chaotic bustle at Pettah Bazaar, away from the typical tourist spots. Here we'll find colonial Dutch mansions, part of the history that is now Colombo City. The walk continues to the old Fort, the commercial hub of Colombo, where another colonial treasure, the Old Dutch Hospital - formerly a hospital during the 17th century - is now host to high-end restaurants, bars and shops. The walk ends here where we take a breather, admire the artifacts, and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. Following lunch we take in a panoramic sightseeing tour of Colombo, a city bursting with life and color. This modern city with an ancient heart is a monument to its colonial history. Its architecture is influenced by the Portuguese, Dutch and British. Today, it is a mix of modern architecture among colonial buildings. The remnants of Dutch and Portuguese domination is seen primarily in the Fort, located north of the city. One may be surprised to notice the predominant English street names such as York Street, Duke Street and Bristol Street, a direct result of the British presence on the Island in the 18th century. In stark contrast are modern buildings such as the World Trade Center. Since the end of its civil war, the skyline is constantly changing with investment in the city’s infrastructure. Continuing on, we visit the famous Buddhist Temple, Gangaramaya, a blend of Chinese, Sri Lankan and Indian-style architecture. Its many monuments to Buddha are marvelous examples of artisanship. The Temple is a center for Buddhist studies and contains a museum and a Pirivena, or monastic college (similar to a seminary) for the education of Buddhist priests in Sri Lanka. A hub in the Sri Lankan Buddhist culture, it also undertakes social welfare as the duty of a religious institution. We'll also take a look in the National Museum, housed in a magnificent white colonial building that contains exhibits telling the story of ancient Sri Lanka. Late afternoon we travel about 20 miles outside Colombo to visit the “Angam Maduwa” in Korathota village. In the middle of a paddy field away from the buzz of the city, we meet Master Ajantha, who practices an ancient form of martial arts known as "Angam." Angampora, the traditional martial art of Sri Lanka, is known to be one of the oldest fighting disciplines in the world. It’s a deeply spiritual form of combat that draws much of its philosophy from different aspects of nature and astrology, along with a strong connection to music, employing rhythmic, flowing movements. The Master will welcome us to his home and perform “Angam Arts.” Back to our hotel for dinner after a very full and interesting day in Colombo and surroundings! DAY 5

Wednesday, August 3 Cave Temples of Dambulla and "the Gathering" of Elephants in Minneriya National Park This morning we'll visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Dambulla, the most impressive and richly painted cave temples in Sri Lanka. A vast isolated rock mass, it was here that king Valagam Bahu took refuge from invasions in the 1st century B.C., later turning the caves into a rock temple. Some of the frescoes in its five separate caves are over 2,000 years old, with over 2,000 square meters of painted ceilings and walls and more than 150 images of Buddha. The largest figure is of a recumbent Buddha carved out of rock, some 15 meters long. The caves' mixture of religious and secular frescoes depict scenes from the Buddha’s life and Sinhalese history. After lunch at a local restaurant, we drive to our hotel for check in, before our late afternoon excursion to the close-by Minneriya National Park. Minneriya National Park is a haven for flora, fauna, and Asian elephants! Every year from August to October, one of the most awesome wildlife spectacles, "the Gathering” of elephants takes place. This is not a migration, but a ‘coming together' of a number of different herds of wild elephants from the surrounding areas of the North Central Province. It is thought that elephants from the Wasgomuwa Park and from far off areas such as Kantale make this annual visit. This is indeed a unique phenomenon, not seen anywhere else in the world, where such a high concentration of wild Asian elephants is found in such a small area. More than 300 elephants can often be seen making their way from the surrounding scrub jungle to the Minneriya reservoir (or "tank). This huge, ancient, man-made reservoir (built in the 3rd century BC by the famous monarch King Mahasen), fills up during the monsoon, but as the rains cease and the dry season begins, the drought takes it toll, and the water in the reservoir starts to dry up. Although the reservoir shrinks dramatically, it never runs dry, and as the water recedes, it leaves behind fertile, moist soil, where lush grass quickly sprouts, and becomes a veritable feast for the elephants! Late evening we return to the hotel in time for dinner. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Overnight Cinnamon Lodge for 2 nights Cinnamon Lodge P.O Box 02, Habarana, Sri Lanka Tel: +94 (0) 66 227 0011 www.cinnamonhotels.com/CinnamonLodgeHabarana.htm Email: [email protected] Sprawled over 27 acres of lush forested land, and one of the foremost Sri Lanka resorts, Cinnamon Lodge Habarana, is an exclusive experience in serenity and tranquility. DAY 6

Thursday, August 4 Archeological Treasures of Polonnaruwa and the Sigiriya Rock Fortress This morning we explore the 5th century ancient city of Polonnaruwa and its archaeological museum, which brings the city to life. The second most ancient of Sri Lanka’s kingdoms, today the city of Polonnaruwa remains one of the best planned archeological sites in the country, with very well-preserved Buddhist and Hindu archeological treasures, standing testimony to the discipline and greatness of the kingdom's first rulers. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1982, its beauty was used as a backdrop to scenes for the Duran Duran music video ‘Save a Prayer’! Its green environment, amazing ancient construction (including a huge lake built in 1,200 AD), and its warm, friendly people make it an attractive city to visit. This evening we'll climb (walk up) one of the most astonishing sights in all of Sri Lanka, the famous 5th century rock fortress, Sigiriya. Walking moderately, it will take about one hour. A massive 700 foot high monolith, Sigiriya was the stronghold of a fortified town. The paws of the great lion that guarded the entrance still exist, and on its summit are the remains of a palace built by King Kasyapa in the 5th century AD. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1982, the rock is said to be a solidified magma plug, from a long eroded and extinct volcano. Hidden in a cave along the citadel are some of the most magnificent and world-renowned ancient frescoes in South Asia, the "Heavenly Maidens," said to be what is left of the 500 paintings of maidens (painted in earth pigments on plaster)that once covered a large area of the face of the rock. On the wall that leads up to the lion staircase, the brick masonry wall built of lime plaster is said to have been so well polished that it reflected the paintings of the opposite rock wall. Today, 15 centuries later, the shine on this wall can still be seen! A total of nearly 1,500 writings on the wall, most of which have been deciphered, include verses that date back as far as the 8th century. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Overnight Cinnamon Lodge

DAY 7

Friday, August 5 Matale Spice Garden and Kandy, the Charming Capital of the Hill Country After breakfast we continue our fascinating journey to Kandy, with a short visit to a spice garden in Matale. A landmark destination on the ancient Spice Trail, Sri Lanka has always been famous for its aromatic cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg and pepper, which lured many ancient traders to the island. Even today, Sri Lanka produces some of the best quality cinnamon in the world. At the spice garden we'll have time to experience a relaxing shoulder massage by an experienced staff member (included). After lunch at a local restaurant, we continue to our hotel for check in and to freshen up before visiting the hill station town of Kandy.

The last royal capital of the venerated 16th century Kandyan Kings, many have said of Kandy that there is something about the city today that has a certain aura of the past which still resonates in every nook and cranny of this quaint city of old-world charm. This is the Capital of the hill country, steeped in cultural heritage and natural beauty, set amidst historic monuments, enchanting forests, great rivers and breath-taking vistas of picturesque mountains and valleys. It's perfectly located about 1,600 feet above sea level, which has given it cooler temperatures in contrast to the tropical climate that prevails in the rest of the island. Famous for its gorgeous lakeside setting and cradled by green hills surrounded by the sinuous lines of tea plantations, it is home to the gold-roofed Temple of the Tooth. With its guardian elephants, this is a deeply significant Buddhist site that contains a tooth of Buddha that is said to have been collected from his funeral pyre. The temple draws thousands of Buddhist pilgrims from around the world. We'll leisurely spend the rest of the evening exploring Kandy, with a panoramic tour of the city via the upper lake drive, stopping at the market square. The city of Kandy is considered the Sinhalese cultural epicenter of Sri Lanka and an important spiritual pilgrimage by Buddhists. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, as home to the Sacred Temple of the Tooth. Tradition relates that a sacred tooth relic of the Lord Buddha was brought to Sri Lanka in the 4th century AD and was enshrined within the Dalada Maligawa, or the Temple of the Tooth. This sacred relic has ever since been the symbol of sovereignty for the Sinhalese kings, always enshrined in great splendor. Prayer services are held daily at dawn, midday, and in the evening and can be viewed by visitors. This evening we'll take in a cultural show featuring traditional Sri Lankan dancing. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Overnight Cinnamon Citadel for 2 nights Cinnamon Citadel 124, Srimath Kuda Ratwatte Mawatha, Kandy, Sri Lanka Tel: +94 (0) 81 223 4365 - 66 http://www.cinnamonhotels.com/CinnamonCitadelKandy.htm Email: [email protected] Influenced by the old, inspired by the new and distinguishing itself from other Kandy hotels, Cinnamon Citadel has fused a retro-chic design with the rich heritage of this ancient kingdom to breathe new life to the most stylish hotel in the hills of Sri Lanka.

DAY 8

Saturday, August 6 Sri Lanka's Last Hunter-Gatherers, the Veddas This morning will be so interesting, as we have this wonderful opportunity to meet with, talk to, and learn about the lifestyle of one of Sri Lanka's oldest tribes, the Veddas, who live richly entwined with nature, precarious as it is today. A little background: Over 2,000 years ago, a lion made love to a beautiful woman in India, and their son, Sinhabahu, was born with lion paws for hands and feet. Sinhabahu in turn had a son called Vijaya, who

became the first, legendary king of Sri Lanka (the Sri Lankan people call themselves Sinhalase - meaning "lion people") after he and 700 followers arrived on the tropical island, off India's South East coast, some time around 500 BC. In remote corners of the country to this day, men and women who believe they are Vijaya's direct descendants, the Vedda, Sri Lanka’s indigenous inhabitants, or Wanniya-laeto (forest-dwellers), eke out an existence collecting honey, trapping bush meat, and farming. The Veddas have repeatedly been forced to choose between assimilating into the surrounding mainstream cultures or to retreat into a shrinking forest habitat. The few remaining Vedda communities are determined that their way of life will continue into future generations, and they still retain much of their own distinctive cultural identity, indigenous language, a traditional lifestyle and occupations including hunting, honey* gathering, and **chena cultivation. *Honey is the beating heart of the Vedda way of life. When the Vedda stop collecting wild honey—it tastes quite unlike normal honey; strong, musky almost, and laced with lumps of wax—then the Vedda way of life will truly have vanished. **Chena cultivation does not make use of the same piece of land (unlike paddy farming) and goes on rotation of crops. The 'chena' cultivator cuts down, at regular intervals, the trees of a small piece of jungle land and sets fire to the woody growths, to begin cultivation. This virgin land is then suitable for cultivation in view of its rich soil. We'll learn about all of this, and more! Today's lunch is a barbeque by the lake, before we return to Kandy. Back in Kandy, this evening we'll visit the residence of Rahju, who has been a professional artist in Sri Lanka for the last thirty years. His half Norwegian, half Sri Lankan background gives him a unique perspective into the island. This experience offers a chance to meet a local who has lived alternatively and creatively in Kandy for the last three decades. We'll enjoy evening tea and conversation with him before returning to our hotel. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Overnight Cinnamon Citadel

DAY 9

Sunday, August 7 Botanical Gardens and a Rail Journey to Tea Country After breakfast we drive to Peradeniya for a beautiful stop to explore the Royal Botanical Gardens, founded in 1824 and containing some of the most valuable collections of plants and trees in the world. Our guide is Mr. Bandara Palipana, Professor of Botany. First built as a pleasure garden by a Sinhala King and later expanded by the British, today there are 147 acres that are home to an amazing variety of trees, plants and flowers, plus a renowned collection of orchids. From our garden visit we board the train bound for an exciting yet relaxing 3 hour rail journey to Nanu Oya, considered as one of the most scenic railway journeys through the highlands of Sri Lanka. Climbing through lush green tea estates, the aroma of pure Ceylon tea is unmistakable. The

mist covered mountains and scenic waterfalls truly compliment this beautiful landscape. We'll enjoy a picnic lunch during our train journey. Coffee was Sri Lanka's main crop in the mid-1800s, but when a fungus destroyed the coffee plantations, plantation owners diversified their crops and began to plant tea. A Scotsman named James Taylor was brought from India to plant the country's first tea seeds, and now Sri Lanka produces most of the world's finest tea! Arriving at the station in Nanu Oya, we are picked up and taken to our hotel, where we have dinner and the rest of the evening at leisure. Once the palatial residence of Sir Edward Barnes, the governor of Sri Lanka, then Ceylon in the 1820s. Today, the Grand offers a myriad of experiences to travelers from all parts of the world, with style and finesse.

DAY 10

Monday, August 8 A Tea Party then Drive to Yala National Park En route to Yala National Park, we stop for a wonderfully interesting visit to a tea plantation and tea factory for a morning “Tea Experience.” Professional tea pluckers take us to an organic tea plantation where we learn the technique of plucking the tea leaves! Then we'll have the opportunity to visit a working tea factory to observe the entire manufacturing process, from the initial drying (withering) of the leaves, through rolling, fermenting and sifting, and finally to taste the final product and sample different blends of tea with a tea sommelier. After lunch at a local restaurant, we continue our journey to Yala, checking into our hotel in time for dinner. Only a 5-minute drive from the famous Yala National Park is Cinnamon Wild Yala. It boasts chalets that offer spectacular views of the beach or jungle, with private balconies, free Wi-Fi, and an outdoor pool and restaurant. A property that was first established in 2002 as an eco-friendly resort for wildlife enthusiasts visiting the Yala National Park, the hotel opened its doors after an extensive re-construction and refurbishment as a world-class game lodge, conceptualizing the unique architectural features of the 'wild' into its rustic exteriors and luxurious interiors decorated with local artifacts, making it one of the most prestigious hotels in Yala.

DAY 11

Tuesday, August 9 On Safari in Search of Leopards in Yala National Park This morning we wake up at the break of dawn and head off for our 4x4 jeep safari in Yala National Park in search of leopard, elephants, bears, crocodiles, and more. Are we in Africa, or what!? Yala National Park is mostly open parkland, making wildlife easier to see. The landscape is varied, with rock outcrops, scrub jungle, lagoons, lakes, rivers and even beaches. Yala is one of the few places in Sri Lanka where it is relatively easy to see a leopard, either strolling beside the track or, with luck, draped elegantly in a tree. The Park has the highest density of wild leopards in the world. It is estimated that there are about 35 leopards and 400 wild Sri Lankan elephants (the largest of the Asian elephant subspecies), as well as wild buffalos, musk deer, mongoose, pangolins, black bears, macaques, jackals and numerous species of bird. Yala is the second largest national park in Southern Sri Lanka and it facilitates one of the richest ecosystems on the island. Returning to our hotel for breakfast, the remainder of the day is at leisure to have a relaxing lunch, swim in the pool, or walk through the beautiful hotel gardens. Late afternoon we return to Yala for our evening safari in the Park, then back to the hotel for dinner. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Overnight Cinnamon Wild

DAY 12

Wednesday, August 10 Famous Stilt Fishermen and the Fort Town of Galle This morning on our way to the old colonial fort town of Galle, we stop for an exciting photo op and to learn about the ancient Sri Lankan practice of stilt fishing. Photograph and experience the famous, picturesque stilt fisherman engaging in their daily catch. Stilt fishing is an age-old fishing method in Sri Lanka (and also in other parts of Asia), and today remains as a scenic icon in the southern coastal belt. Notice how carefully balanced the fishermen position themselves on thin stilts during the low tide, and also when the waters are riding at the high tide. It's really a sight to behold. Continuing our journey, we enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, then meet our guide on arrival in Galle.

The country's oldest living city, the ancient trading post of Galle is said to be the famous Tarshish of the Bible. With its historic sites and unique fusion of Arabic and European architectural and cultural influences, this World Heritage fortified town was the essential port of call for Chinese, Persian, Arab and Indian traders. Javanese and Sumatrans came later followed by Marco Polo in 1299 AD. The Portuguese arrived in the 1500s and built a settlement with a fort of palm trees and mud. This was captured by the Dutch (and finally the British!) who built the 400 year old fort to protect their presence with great ramparts and bastions. Narrow streets are lined with old houses that display their Dutch heritage with pillared verandahs. Government offices remain in use and the community within the fort is a bustle of daily life, a living, breathing town hidden within the fortified walls of this ancient, maritime citadel. Arriving at our beautiful hotel on the beach, where we stay for the next two nights, we check in and relax before dinner. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Overnight at the Vivanta by Taj Hotel Vivanta by Taj National Holiday Resort Bentota, Sri Lanka Tel: +94 (0) 34 55 55555 www.vivantabytaj.com/bentota-sri-lanka/overview.html Email: [email protected] Vivanta by Taj, Bentota, is delightfully located along one of the finest beaches on the South West coast, a charming beach and spa resort that's almost one with the Indian Ocean. Money and Credit Cards

Sri Lanka Currency Sri Lanka has a decimal currency system. One Sri Lankan Rupee is divided into 100 cents. Currency notes are in the denominations of Rs.10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000, and 5000. Exchange rates as of July 2015 are as follows: 10 Rupees = $0.073 US Dollars (7 cents) 100 Rupees = $0.73 US Dollars (73 cents) 1000 Rupees = $7.27 US Dollars 5000 Rupees (the largest bill) = $36.37 U.S. Dollars Won't THIS be fun?! Exchange currency only at authorized outlets such as banks and hotels, and at the airport, and exchange what you think you will spend in the country. Currency exchange rates can fluctuate daily and you might check the latest rates prior to departure. Reputed hotels, selected restaurants and shops in Colombo and other main cities such as Kandy and Galle accept U.S. Dollars. Supermarkets, smaller boutiques and grocery stores however only accept local currency. Banking Hours All banks are open from 9 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday to Friday. Some selected private banks are open for a limited number of hours during Saturdays. Banks are closed on Sundays and on all public holidays. "Touts" Like any other country in the world, Sri Lanka has their share of touts (illegal money exchangers on the street). Be cautious and do not accept their offers to give better deals for your foreign currency exchanges or let them lead you to shops which give special bargains. *Important information about credit cards! Please note: You should bring at least one smart card, usually referred to as a chip card, or chip-and-PIN credit card for travel to Europe and to other overseas destinations. These new cards are more secure and you are more protected from credit card fraud. These so-called smart cards have embedded microchips in them. You will see the silver or gold microchip on the front of your card. They also have the traditional magnetic stripe, so can be used the same as your regular credit/debit card. You'll either sign for purchases, or enter a 4 digit PIN into a terminal. (Confirm with your bank that your PIN, or 4 digit number, will be the number that you use the FIRST time that a PIN is required for use with your new card. So just make sure you remember it for all future transactions!) It is best to have your chip card as a VISA or MasterCard, since American Express is often not accepted in many places. In Europe and in parts of Asia, they simply don't acknowledge magnetic-

strip cards anymore unless they are chip-and-PIN enabled. In addition, in any automated transactions such as train stations and gas stations, ONLY chip-and-PIN cards are accepted. Chip-and-PIN cards have become standard in many European countries because of their superior fraud-prevention abilities. Now countries in Asia, North America and South America, and Canada are doing the same.

Food and Water

Thanks to Sri Lanka’s tropical climate, fresh fruit, vegetables and spices are in abundance and all are used in many ways. Freshness is key, with households regularly shopping more than once a day for produce. Many families have a curry leaf tree and grow some vegetables themselves – some of which are virtually unknown outside Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan foods to try: Rice and Curry The island nation’s staple diet mainly consists of boiled or steamed rice served with curry. But rice and curry is so much more than just "rice and curry." It usually consists of a "main curry" of fish or meat, as well as several other curries made with vegetables and even fruit (try a mango curry!). Sri Lanka curries are known for their fiery hot spicy flavors, and coconut milk is very distinct feature of Sri Lankan cuisine. Be warned, "hot" is definitely not an understatement and can be challenging to a first timer’s palate, so ask for your dish to be made up to your liking. But don’t worry; there are plenty of mild curries on offer too! Hoppers This is a breakfast and dinner favorite of the locals. Light, crisp and bowl shaped, it is made by swirling a mixture of rice flour and coconut milk in a wok shaped pan. The sides are wafer crisp and the centre soft. Hoppers can be eaten with spicy pickles, curries or even with butter and sugar and are delicious when eaten hot. Lamprais

A Dutch variation of the rice and curry theme of boiled rice with cinnamon and nutmeg for taste and aroma, accompanied with dry curries such as chicken, boiled egg, pickle, are wrapped in a banana leaf and baked to enhance the flavor. Jackfruit For locals the jack fruit is a delicacy. When ripe with a dark yellow shade it is a sweet juicy fruit that can be eaten raw with a sprinkle of salt. When it is unripe it is more like a vegetable and is best boiled or made into a tasty curry. Milk Rice (Kiribath) A breakfast favorite with the locals, usually made for special occasions such as the first day of the month, New Year, an auspicious event, etc. White or red raw rice is boiled and thereafter the thick cream of coconut milk is added with a pinch of salt to give the correct flavor. Once cooked the milk rice, now thick, will be laid on a flat dish and usually cut into square or diamond-shape pieces. It is usefully eaten with a spicy pickle or a mix of ground chilis, salt and onions. Kalu Dodol Kalu dodol is a desert and a true delicacy. The dark and sticky dish consists mainly of kithul (a variety of palm) jaggery, rice flour and coconut milk. Making a traditional kalu dodol is a time-consuming process and requires a lot of patience and skill that has been practiced for generations. Tropical fruits Make sure you stop and try the delightful tropical and juicy fruits such as pineapple, guava, mangoes, wood apples, bananas, watermelons and seasonal fruits such as rambutan, durian and mangosteen. Eating Etiquette Always wash your hands before you eat (for the sake of courtesy as well as hygiene) and always use your right hand to give and to receive. It's acceptable to use or to ask for cutlery, but if you're eating with your hand, always use your right hand. (It's acceptable to drink holding a glass in your left hand.) Alcoholic drinks are freely available at public bars, restaurants, wine shops, stores and super markets. However sale of liquor is prohibited on Poya Days (full moon day), which is of religious importance to Buddhists. Please note all hotel restaurants and bars observe this rule too. Irrespective of precautions, change in water and food can result in mild abdominal hindrances and even nausea. It is preferable and safer to consume only bottled mineral water during your stay. By observing reasonable precautions, you should be able to enjoy a healthy, trouble-free stay. ALWAYS drink bottled water (never tap water), and do not eat raw food, undercooked meats and fish, unpasteurized milk and dairy products, and any fruit that you have not peeled yourself. Eating yogurt helps with the introduction of new foods!

Shopping

carvings are popular in the country. If you are looking for a specific item, as a courtesy your guide/driver can refer you to a shop that carries merchandise that you want. Such a referral should not be taken as an endorsement of the shop or assumption of responsibility for the merchandise or shipping arrangements you may purchase there.

Religion and Etiquette

Buddhism Sri Lanka is predominantly a Buddhist country, and the culture and lives of the people are much fashioned by their faith. The introduction of Buddhism to the island took place during 250 BC. The Buddha became the central theme in every form of art, especially in sculpture and painting. The colossal Buddha statues finely carved out of granite and the massive ‘dagobas’ that house the sacred relics of the Lord Buddha are much venerated in this country. Christianity, Hinduism and Islam Apart from the predominance of Buddhism, there are a considerable number of the people in the population that follow Christianity, Hinduism and Islam. Temple Entry All visitors to Buddhist and Hindu Temples are expected to be considerately dressed when visiting any place of worship. Shorts, bare shoulders, caps and hats are a sign of a lack of respect, so please cover up accordingly. Shoes have to be removed when entering the Temple premises and shoe keeping at a very nominal fee is a service granted at most of the temples. Photography and Filming Kindly remember that in Sri Lanka Buddhism is a living religion and most ancient monuments are still venerated. Photography or filming should not be done in a manner causing any disrespect to the shrines, images or monuments. Posing for photographs and videos directly in front of the statues and paintings is prohibited. On the other hand, the locals will often be happy to pose for a photo, so feel free to ask. Etiquette Sri Lankans are helpful, courteous, and always welcome their guests with a wide smile. When receiving a gift, Sri Lankans usually hesitate to open it in front of the person, as this is considered impolite. Similarly, it is not a must or disrespect that you do not open the gifts in front of them. There is a widely practiced sign language: the slight nodding of the head. It is a "yes" when the head is slightly nodded vertically. And if it is a "no" the head is slightly tilted horizontally. When Sri Lankans meet it is customary not to ask personal questions about one’s family and health.

Weather

Sri Lanka has a hot, humid and tropical climate. However, it is a year-round destination with two monsoon seasons. The weather doesn’t run like clockwork, and it can always be surprising! There will never be weather too dramatic that will stand in the way of plenty of warm weather and sunshine. July - September

This is what is known as "inter-monsoon" season, meaning that spare the odd shower, the weather is great at this time of year. Temperatures remain high across the country at an average of around 84 degrees F. and the beaches are hot and dry. All in all, a great period to travel to Sri Lanka. Best Time to visit (Quick Summary) January - April (Entire Country) Mid-July - September (Entire Country) February - September (North and East)

What to Bring

Loose fitting, comfortable clothing is advisable, and a comfortable, well broken in pair of walking shoes is a necessity. A hat and sunscreen are also necessary, as we will spend many hours in the sun as we explore the UNESCO World Heritage sites all over Sri Lanka. Remember that we will be in a Buddhist country, and you must dress accordingly. See "Temple Entry" under RELIGION AND ETIQUETTE.

Luggage, Clothing, and Travel Accessories

Three words of packing advice: LIGHT, LIGHT, LIGHT! It is best to condense your luggage into one manageable suitcase with wheels and one daypack or backpack (carry-on size). Also, a spare, very light duffel bag or day pack rolled or folded into your wheeled suitcase is useful to have to transport souvenir items home. We suggest you use your daypack as your carry-on bag during your flights. In it you should have all valuables and essentials: medications, passports and all important documents, cameras, a day’s change of clothing, lightweight sleepwear, and toiletries. Put luggage ID tags on the outside AND inside your baggage. If your bag is lost and the outside ID tag and baggage stickers are dislodged, the airlines may open the bag to search for an ID inside your bag. (We will send you 3 tags for the outside of your bags.) You should also be aware of the airline regulations (www.tsa.gov/travelerinformation) about what you can and cannot bring in your carry-on bag, and what you must put in your checked luggage.

Pre-Departure Tasks

Obtain or renew passport and your Sri Lanka Visa/ETA (online). Evaluate and obtain trip cancellation, baggage, and medical insurance. Consult with your physician for physical examination, immunization, and prescription

About Adventure Travel Today - Please Read Carefully!

At AdventureWomen, we would like to ensure that all participants understand that our excursions are adventure travel vacations, and not "tours." We define "adventure travel" as travel in which one actively participates, as opposed to a "tour," in which one is more or less a passive observer. experience an active, out of the ordinary vacation, and meet new friends. Most of all, we want our trips to be fun! In this spirit, the successful adventure traveler should be a good-natured realist and have a sense of humor! Adventure vacations, by nature, require that participants be self-sufficient, flexible, and able to accept situations as they exist, and not just as they would have preferred or expected them to exist. The constraints of scheduled group traveling also necessitate that each of us be understanding of and sensitive to others. Being on time is important, and contributes to the congeniality, success and well being of both individuals and the group! Thank you for choosing to travel with AdventureWomen!
