Boasting spectacular landscapes, geothermal hot springs, cascading waterfalls, dancing northern lights and glacier lagoons, planning a trip to Iceland can get quite daunting with so much on offer. Fret not, as we have put together the perfect seven days self-drive itinerary that will let you glide through Iceland’s outdoor playground and devour Reykjavik, the eccentric buzzing capital.

ItineraryDay 1: Arrival in IcelandYou’ve heard about it, you’ve dreamed about it, and now you’re actually doing it. Welcome to Iceland!Reykjavik is a fascinating city full of quirk, with lots of cosmopolitan things to do, like visiting museums, having cocktails in a cosy bar, and enjoying many great dining options. So, don’t misspend time unpacking and settling into your hotel and head out to explore the buzzing capital city of Iceland today.

Day 2: Borgarfjörður – Ice Cave(140 KM)Start the day with a quick briefing at the Arctic Trucks headquarters, where we will get to know the basics of the powerful 4x4 modified trucks that will be your home for the next few days.With the power in our hand, we will start driving west from Reykjavík to Borgarfjörður and up to Hotel Húsafell for lunch before heading up to Langjokull, the second largest glacier of Europe.Step into a man-made ice cave in Langjokull glacier. A customised all-terrain truck will take us to the entrance of the ice tunnels. Trust us, the vistas on this drive are magnificent, the landscapes unfolding beneath us stunning, and the continuous surface of the glacier so barren and beautiful that it seems otherworldly. After witnessing the magical world inside of a glacier, jump back in the truck for a return journey to Húsafell.

Day 3: Golden Circle (235 KM)Getting straight down to the business of going into the Icelandic wild, today we will explore the Golden Circle and visit Iceland’s most intriguing natural landmarks. From the historic Thingvellir National Park, home of Iceland’s ancient Viking Parliament and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, to the erupting geothermal geysers of Haukadalur, this day will take your breath away.We will also head towards the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall cascading down in the Hvítá River originating in the Langjökull glacier, before driving all the way to Langjökull glacier for the snowmobiling adventure of the day. Now, who’s ready to explore the glacier on snowmobiles? We know, we are!

Day 4: Landmannalaugar(110 KM)Today is going to be a day that you will remember for the rest of your life! After a hearty breakfast, start with a drive through the beautiful Þjórsárdalur valley with a photo stop at Gjáin and at Háifoss waterfall, the second highest waterfall of the island that drops from a height of 122 m.

From Þjórsárdalur, drive straight up to the mountains. This is the ultimate 4X4 experience, deserted tracks in combination with a stunning ruggedness of the surroundings will result in an unforgettable experience. Continue your drive to Landmannalaugar and to its rustic mountain hut at the borders of a warm river. Today, you will get to test the powerful capabilities of the Arctic Trucks as you drive through snow-covered terrains. The extraordinary mountains that surround the hut in Landmannalaugar will leave nobody untouched. After relaxing and enjoying a bath in the natural hot river, rest for the night. If you are in luck, you might get to witness the magical Northern lights dancing over your head.

Day 5: South Coast – Reykjavik (310 KM)Wake up in the middle of nowhere and start driving back on the snow-covered tracks. We will head towards the astonishing south coast of Iceland with its littoral plains of infinite platitude surrounded by green mountains on top of which fall immaculate glaciers. The black sand beaches of Vik and their lunar appearance brutally contrast with uneven relief foreseeing the vast deserts of the highlands.Continue your drive through the Hellisheidi land towards Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss, two of the many waterfalls that you could see during the trip.Your next destination will be the black lava sand beaches, where you can admire the beauty and power of the North Atlantic Ocean right in front of you. The black sand comes from an enormous volcanic eruption that produced one of the most crucial lava flows of the last centuries. Return to Reykjavik passing by the impressive Solheimajökull glacier and Hellisheidi plateau. Today, we will bid farewell to the Arctic Trucks before returning to the hotel.

Day 6: Blue Lagoon (50 KM)Today we have one last piece of the Icelandic landscape to admire before we fly back home. The beauty of the Blue Lagoon will warm us, soothe us, and leave us positively lost for words. A dip in the insanely beautiful geothermal waters of Blue Lagoon is said to be good for health.Test it for yourself this day as you don your swimsuit and submerge into the bright azure steaming pools.In the evening, we will get together one last time for a farewell dinner and reflect upon the previous week full of incredible experiences.

Day 7: DeparturePack your bags in pretty Reykjavik and try to stay on the high induced by all the wonders we’ve taken in. We bid farewell as the trip culminates, leaving us with a sense of appreciation for this particular country.
