    Preface

    Kapuas is one of district in Central Kalimantan. As one of the oldest districts,

    it has a long experience regarding culture and history. The making of this

    books is inspired by book with title Discovery Indonesia that provide a

    wide range of information regarding Indonesia.

    This book also try to give a deep view into Kapuas district regarding a wide

    range of facts such as customs and traditions, exploring nature and the trail

    of history.

    Beside all of that, this book is trying to introduce Kapuas district to the

    world. The image of Kalimantan (Borneo) is still horrific. This book tries to

    give another view of Kalimantan.

    A lot of information in this book was taken from Informasi Kapuas

    (www.kapuas.info) that provide a wide range information regarding Kapuas

    district in Central Kalimantan province, Indonesia.

    FACTS FOR THE VISITORS

    Customs and traditionsDayak Ngaju people have tradition in welcoming visitors such as Netek

    Pantan(Dayak Ngaju Language) or Potong Pantan(Indonesian Language) or

    Cutting Pantan(English Language). Pantanis a wood that put accros the

    street that we want to enter. The event starting with mamapas, a ritual to

    eliminate or avoid the visitor from bad influences (especially from the spirit).

    After that the visitor will be asked to step on the egg until the egg is broken.

    The visitor will be given mandau(sword) to cut the wood. During cutting

    the wood, the host will ask several question regarding name and intention onvisiting the place. Afterpantantruncated, the visitor are allowed to enter the

    place.

    Tiwahis another procession that usually attrack visitors. This ritual is done

    to free the family of dying people from several prohibition caused by his or

    her dead. Widow or widower can not marriage before perform tiwah. This

    festival usually perform around two years after the person died, frequently

    after several months of his or her dead, or may be after eight to ten years.You should have big room for the party that will be done, buffalo for

    sacrifices which can be taken away. Also waing until everything ready for

    tiwah, like corpses is completely rotten, and all that remains is bone. Three

    days before tiwah started, you bring a coffin (which is already decorated)

    which contains the remains of bones into the Hall. All the treasures you

    have, especially Djawet, sacred pots, placed around the coffin. The coffin

    guarded day and night, accompanied by music. The first day of a six-day

    Tiwah party filled with burry Nakupat (cooked rice wrapped in coconutleaves). Nakupat were made for those who burried next day. After they

    finished, the buffalo are slaughtered, wine is consumed until they are drunk.

    Toward the evening they do magah Liau, the sould of the dead were taken to

    Leu Liau, ghost country. This was done through the night, and it is done by

    Basir (ritual specialist or shaman) who brings Tempon telon and Sangiang

    from the sky, so that they can bring the souls to the spirit land. The next day

    or two the next day you bury bones in Sandong, large families carrying

    coffins. The bones were taken to the cemetery accompanied by music. When

    the bones are put into Sandong, Bliang(witch) still dancing around Sandong,

    and called upon the souls who are burried there, to add new souls. This

    ritual accompanied by the joyous music, dance and encouraged along with

    drinks. The next day, they killed two buffaloes and some pigs. On the

    evening of the day and the next night by ahead under Basirwith the help of

    some Balian, the bones, the sould of the bones, hair, etc, and all at the feast

    Gana slaughter buffalo and pigs, all showing their treasures, etc. which in

    turn Ghost land to realities, and the riches of the sould are there. Then followthe Andau labohgather the main day of the festival, where hundreds, often

    up to 1000 men invited themselves to feasting. A lot of buffalos and pigs are

    slaughtered, the whole day drinking tuak, and it is driven musicirt greyish

    fornication with Balian. Then the last day comes Musah takolok, called

    eating the head, on this day the heads are planted on large wooden carved

    images, and in the evening with a dance around a large pile rice decided to

    the party.

    In the life of Dayak community in carrying particular ceremony, religious

    ceremony, and Thanksgiving is always tinged with a variety of art activities

    such as Manasaidance, Karungut, Karunya, Tandak Mandauand Deder. In

    ancient time karungut is used not as entertainment but as a cult and a means

    of communications with their ancestor (the spirit the spirit of ancestors).

    Exploring natureBased on information from Office of Youth, Sport, Culture and Tourism

    Kapuas, the available site is Cemara Labat beach, at Cemara Labat village in

    Kapuas Kuala subdistrict. In this place the visitor can enjoy and see:

    The vast expanse of rice fields along the edge of the highway. Galam broad forest groups at the edges of rice paddies and fields of

    society.

    Mangrove forest vegetation in the back of the village followingCemara Labat Pine forests and grasslands like purun and nipa.

    The number of streams, and canal (anjir) colored peoples dailyactivities is the basic capital fringe river tourism development.

    Cemara Labat beach and the daily activities of fishermen in the JavaSea.

    The existence of a vast pool of water as the pond area that could bedeveloped into a fishing tourism arena.

    The existence of macaques and stork habitat in large enoughquantities.

    The development community in the fields behind the coastalembankment Pantai Cemara Labat.

    The trail of history

    There are two building that officially assign as cultural objects and historic

    site in Kapuas district. One of them is Immanuel Church in Saka Mangkahai

    village, West Kapuas subdistrict. The church was built in 1876 with fund

    from Zending Barmen. Church buildings are made of ironwood, wood floors

    and wood walls, ironwood shingle roofs, dan there are 3 pieces of mosaic

    glass and unique rare there are only 2 (two) in the world.

    Huma Hai Loendjoe in Mandomai village, West Kapuas is another one. This

    house in built in 1907. The size of each room in this house quite large. The

    house was built without nails, they used wooden pegs. They did not use the

    door hinge, they use the crutch of ironwood.

    Another site that has Huma Betang(Long House) is Tumbang Bukoi village

    in Sei Hanyo subdistrict. Model of Huma Betang also available in KualaKapuas city.

    Braving the weatherTemperature in Kuala Kapuas range from 23oC to 33oC. Dry season last from

    around May to October, and the rainy season from November to April. But

    from the last several years the season is unpredictable.

    LaundryLaundry shops are available in several place (Pemuda Stree, Ahmad Yani

    Street, Tambun Bungai Street Gang IV). Hotels in Kuala Kapuas do not

    provide laundry.

    LanguageThe Indonesian language is the official language in Kapuas district. There are

    local languages that usually used in daily life, Banjar and Dayak languages.

    Banjar languages usually used for transaction in market. Dayak language

    usually used in daily conversation among Dayak people and usually used in

    giving health promotion to Dayak people.

    SouvenirsThere are several souvenir shops that available in Kapuas district such as:

    ElectricityElectric power generation in Kuala Kapuas and subdisrict around it is mostly

    done by water power and diesel generator. A very small quantity was done

    by solar power. The voltage is 220 volts.

    Public transportationFor short distance, the local prefer becakor ojek. Becakare bicycle taxis

    which are available in Kuala Kapuas. Ojekare usually motor-cycles. In order

    to across the river, locals are using ferryand klotok.

    TelecommunicationTelephone operating companies that available in Kapuas are TELKOM

    (Flexi, fix phone), Telkomsel (Halo, Simpati, As), XL, Fren, Axis, Indosat and

    3. Simpati is available in all of the capital city of subdistricts in Kapuas

    Time zonesKapuas district include in The West Indonesia Tim (WIB). WIB is seven

    hours behind GMT that is, WIB is GMT minus seven.

    The Postal ServiceState-run postal services are available in several subdistrict around Kuala

    Kapuas. The postal services also accept the dispatch of money orders and

    parcels. Private companies that ship parcels between towns, province and

    country from Kuala Kapuas are Titipan Kilat and

    Places of interest

    Kapuas district is the one of 14 district of Kalimantan Tengah province. Total

    area of Kapuas district is 14,999 square kilometers (9,77 percent of regional

    area of Kalimantan Tengah province) which is dividid into two of big area,

    the ebbtide and non ebbtide area. The ebbtide area (generally in south area)

    is potential for crop agriculture, while the non ebbtide area (generally in

    north area) is potential for people and privated rubber farm.

    Topographically, at the northside was hill area, with height range from 100

    500 metre from sea surface and had inclination level ranged from 8-15 degre,

    and also had mountain area with inclination range from 15-25 degree.

    At the southside consisted of coash and marsh with height ranged from 0 5

    metres from sea surface and had elevation 0% - 8% and also be influenced by

    ebbtide. This area had floods potency. Kapuas district also had waters

    teritory (lake, marsh and some rivers).

    Generally the climate of Kapuas district was tropic and damp with the

    average temperature ranged from 21-23 degree Celcius and the highesttemperature reach up to 36 degree Celcius. The most volume of rainfall was

    on February, about 12-1,172 mm every year, while the dry season was on

    June to September.

    People and cultureKapuas district inhabitated by 339.824 people, or twenty three per square

    kilometer. The indigenous people are the Dayaks, comprising the sub-tribes

    Ngaju, Ot Danum, Maanyan, Katinganand others. Outside from theDayaks, settlers from other areas of Indonesia also found in the district.

    The Ot Danumlive in longhouses with sometimes as many as 50 rooms.

    They are called betang. Such houses are found near the headwaters of rivers

    in Kapuas.

    The Ot Danum, like other Dayaks, are known for their skills in plaiting

    rattan, and palm leaves. Such products are made by women, and sold in themarkets in towns and cities such as Kuala Kapuas and Banjarmasin.

    and patahu. Sandungis a wooden building to keep the ashes of the familys

    dead, after cremation. Sandungsare found almost in every subdistrict inKapuas districts especially in non-ebbtide areas.

    animal. A Patahu, however is not occupied by people but by the anchestral

    souls of the Dayaks. This structure is believe to protect the village, and is

    therefore filled with offerings in the form of dishes, glasses and some

    spherical stones.

    Statues

    The statues, representing human beings and animals, made of iron-wood

    (kayu ulin), are part of the Dayak system of belief. The statues are considered

    to have magic powers, and are designed to ward of catastrophes. The statues

    are placed in the house as guardians of the sandung.

    GUIDEKuala Kapuas, the capital district of Kapuas, can be reached by land from

    Palangka Raya and Banjarmasin. Local travel is mostly by road and river.
