India’s Northeastern region is a relatively unexplored paradise, known for its natural beauty, diversity, rare and unique wildlife, people and culture. Northeast India boasts of some of the most stunning scenery in India, ranging from the snowcapped peaks of the Himalayas to the grassy plains of Assam, thick forests and majestic waterfalls of Meghalaya.

Northeast India consists of 7 sister states – Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, and 1 brother state - Sikkim. With a population of 46 million, Northeast India covers an area of 262,000 sq. km which is about 7.9% of the total geographical area of the country.Northeast India is home to over 200 tribes, the most notable among them are the fiercely independent tribes of Nagaland, the tattooed, sun and moon worshipping Apatanis of Arunachal Pradesh, the matrilineal Khasis, and Garos of Meghalaya, etc. The region is a kaleidoscope of colors, cultures, cuisines, and landscapes which can be experienced through the prism of cultural festivals that showcase the attire, dance, music, and food of the inhabitants.

India's Northeast is a land of undulating hills and plains with luxuriant green cover and a wide variety of rare and exotic flora and fauna. It boasts of many unique natural features like the largest river island in the world, Majuli and the smallest inhabited river island in the world, Umananda in Assam; the only floating lake in the world, Loktak Lake in Manipur that houses the only floating national park in the world. Meghalaya is the only state in the world to have living root tree bridges and boasts of the world’s longest sandstone cave. Of about 900 species of orchids in India, 660 are found in Arunachal Pradesh and 515 orchid species are found only in Sikkim.

The region is an agricultural and horticultural treasure trove blessed as it were, with suitable climatic conditions for the production of commercially important crops such as Millets, Rice, Maize, Pineapple, Pears, Peaches, Plums, Prunes, Litchi, Kiwi, Banana, Mango, Mandarin Orange, Ginger, Black Pepper, Turmeric, Chilies, Passion Fruit, Cardamom, Avocado, Strawberry, Cashew, Jackfruit, Areca Nut, Betel Leaf, etc. which oer huge potential for the food processing sector. It is also home to many relatively unknown, underutilized and exotic crops like Perilla, Long Pepper, Persimmons, Tree Tomatoes, Moringa, Squash, dierent kinds of beans and a huge diversity of indigenous vegetables, fruits, medicinal and aromatic herbs.

India’s North East is surrounded by Bangladesh, China, Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal and Myanmar and the presence of a long 5182 km of the international border with these countries oers an additional advantage and tremendous opportunities for international trade. With its proximity to Southeast Asian markets and home to diverse and exotic varieties of fruits and other crops coupled with a time-honored tradition of organic cultivation, Northeast India is emerging as a major center of the organic food processing industry. As stated by Union Food Processing Industries Minister, Harsimrat Kaur Badal - ''Organic production has a very huge national and international market today and only Northeast India has the potential to meet this demand through organized production”. Her statement is supported by Prime Minister Narendra Modi making the Northeast's Food Processing sector a part of the 'Make in India' mission.

The notable investment opportunities in food processing of the Northeastern states are:

Sikkim: It is India’s first fully organic state and is the largest producer of Large cardamom. The Government of Sikkim has adopted policies for assisting industrial growth in the state such as “The Sikkim Industrial Promotion and Incentive (Amendment) Act, 2007 which provides subsidies and incentives to entrepreneurs.

Assam: The geographical conditions of Assam are eminently suited for the cultivation of paddy and it is the largest tea producing state in the country. The Northeast Mega Food Park is also located in Assam. The Government of Assam has set up a “Single window system” for submitting investment proposals and the Industrial & Investment policy of the state also oers incentives and subsidies. Another step taken by the government is the conversion of 20,015 acres of land for organic production under Parampragat Krishi Vikash Yojana (PKVY) and Mission Organic Value Chain Development in Northeastern Region (MOVCD-NER).

Meghalaya: It is the largest producer of ginger and leads in the production of Oranges, Pineapple, Areca Nut, and the world-famous Lakadong Turmeric. To tap into this potential, the Government of Meghalaya has embraced a policy of encouraging and promoting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as growth drivers in the food processing and related agribusiness space. To further strengthen this sector, the state had also created a new Directorate of Food Processing under the Department of Agriculture – perhaps the first state in the country to do so, with the objective of liaising with and providing the vital linkage between the agriculture and industrial segments of the state’s economy. Various schemes of the Government of India and the State viz., the Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana, the Meghalaya Industrial & Investment Promotion Policy, 2016 (MIIPP 2016) and the recently adopted Meghalaya Startup Policy 2018 will all be leveraged by the Directorate of Food Processing. The state has also set up an exclusive Directorate for Dairy Development to promote the dairy industry. It also launched several commodity specific missions to expand the area under the Lakadong Turmeric, known for its highest

curcumin content in the world and the Jackfruit Mission, to create food processing opportunities around the unutilized Jackfruit.

Tripura: The state is known for its special variety of Pineapples and Oranges which can really contribute towards the supply of high-quality value-added products. The setting up of a Mega Food Park has also been approved by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries wherein, 50 acres of land has been allotted by the State Government.

Nagaland: Nagaland is famous for Naga King Chilly which is renowned all over the world for its pungency. Apart from Pineapple and Banana, Nagaland is also one of the largest producers of Pigs in the country which paves way for a potential meatprocessing industry.

Mizoram: Bananas and Oranges cover about 80% of the total fruit crop production in the state and the state has also been seen as having the potential for producing Palm Oil and its related products. The Mizoram

Food & Allied Industries Corporation (MIFCO) which is an undertaking of the State Government has the objective of promoting and developing food processing industries.

Manipur: Manipur is the largest producer of Passion Fruit in the country. It is also abundant in Black Rice, Kiwi, Mushroom, and Pineapple. The Food Processing Training Centre (FPTC) Scheme by the government aims to build up entrepreneurs in food processing. Arunachal Pradesh: Arunachal Pradesh is the top producer of Kiwi fruit and the second-largest producer of Large Cardamom in the country. The State government is also promoting food processing setups through the scheme for Technology up-gradation/ Establishment/ Modernization of Food Processing Industries with grants for a plant, machinery, and technicalcivil works.

• The government has improved the regulatory framework for greater benefit

• The organic market is attracting investors into organic produce companies and the Northeast is the place to be for organics

• Technology and online marketing are making many of these Northeast organic produce companies, eminently viable

• Nationwide organic food restaurants and cafes, retail outlets and supermarkets are increasing rapidly

• Increased consumer awareness about eating right and eating well is driving the industry

• Buyers are increasingly spoilt for choice, especially, in the organic product category with regular launches of new products

• Food processing and packaging have ensured longer shelf life and easy availability of organic produce

• The presence of the Union AYUSH Ministry has raised demand for Ayurvedic and related wellness products which abound in the Northeast, besides boosting exports

With a population of 46 million, Northeast India is emerging as one of the markets for the FMCG, e-commerce sector and for food companies like Dabur, Unibic, Patanjali, Nestle, Amul, etc. The region is one of the largest consumers of meat in the country while Assam, the gateway to the Northeast and its capital city Guwahati, has become the new investment destination. They are all set to emerge as the hub for FMCG, following the extension of excise duty benefits in the Northeast. It is also the new destination of India’s premier hospital chains with investments flowing in from Apollo, Sankars Netralaya, Narayana Health, Fortis, etc. E-commerce majors like Amazon are also expanding their own delivery network across the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, and Sikkim while Myntra has its own delivery center in Guwahati.

Nestled away in the hills of eastern sub-Himalayas is undoubtedly one of India’s most beautiful states, Meghalaya. Aptly named as ‘the abode of clouds’, the state has also been given the accolade of “Scotland of the East” for its gently rolling hills shrouded in the gentle mist. Famous for its abundant rainfall, living root bridges, virgin forests, breathtaking waterfalls, clear rivers and a network of caves, Meghalaya is the land of pristine landscapes and natural beauty. Shillong, the bustling capital city of Meghalaya is a must-visit for nature and heritage lovers with its neat Victorian bungalows and little churches dotting the narrow roads that curl through the hills filled with tall pine trees. Perched at an altitude of 1,491m above sea level, Shillong got its name from U Lei Shyllong, a powerful deity revered by the local people. The presence of many well reputed educational institutions, many of them established by various missionary groups make Shillong the hub of education for the entire north-east. Known as the Rock Capital of India, Shillong is a city that is famous for music, its unique culture, and cheerful people.

How to Get There
