In 1603, James I became the new King of England. Many people hopedfor more freedom for Catholics. They were disappointed. Robert Catesbywas a Catholic from Warwickshire. In 1605, he plotted to blow up thenew king and the Houses of Parliament and make England safe forCatholics. Catesby recruited a Catholic soldier called Guy Fawkes to help.

The king ruled that 5 Novemberevery year should be a day ofthanksgiving and celebrationfor ‘the joyful day’ whenParliament was saved fromthe gunpowder plotters’explosion. People lit bonfiresin the streets and had parties.And we still do today!
Their heads were displayed on poles as alesson to all England to obey the king.

The remaining gunpowder plotters wereconvicted of high treason and executed infront of large crowds in London in 1606.

The gunpowder plotterswere Catholics who were
fed up with beingpersecuted and not allowedto practise their faith.
English Catholics hoped thenew King James I of
England would make lifeeasier for Catholics.They were wrong.
The gunpowder plotters wereconvicted of treason.Treason means a crime
against the king.
