Athletic Coaching Education offers unique certifications and minors that expand the student experience, enhance career opportunities, and prepare students for graduate degrees.

Athletic Training students gain clinical experiences through field placements with WVU athletic teams, club sports, area high schools, and sports medicine clinics.

Physical Education Teacher Education is a nationally recognized and accredited program that allows first-year students to become immersed in student teaching experiences through school-based assignments.

Sport and Exercise Psychology is one of a few programs in the nation that offers specialization in sport and exercise psychology at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Sport Management students are required to complete an internship, earning three credit hours, allowing them to learn about the sports industry while creating a launching pad for a successful career.

Many CPASS programs are nationally accredited. You can explore the world through study abroad and internships. Internationally recognized scholars and professors will prepare you for careers or graduate school.

Students can choose internships in sport, health, and fitness. These placements allow students to see what it’s like to develop coaching skills with athletes of all ages and performance levels, including special needs individuals.

Few institutions in the nation offer a degree in athletic coaching education.

Athletic Training

Upon passing board certification examination, graduates practice as certified athletic trainers in professional, collegiate, secondary, clinical, or corporate/industrial settings.

Clinical experiences are available with all of WVU’s Division I intercollegiate athletic teams, club sports and intramurals, Division II Fairmont State University, local high schools, sports medicine clinics, and with WVU physicians.

Athletic Training graduates have had a 100 percent first-time passing rate on the BOC exam for three straight years.

Graduates with teaching certification are typically employed as elementary or secondary physical education and/or health teachers and athletic coaches. Teacher certification is provided for grades Pre K-12 and adult learners. Community health promotion certifies students to teach health in grades 5-12.

Students from this program receive direct experience in more than ten public schools in West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

The Physical Education Teacher Education major was honored as one of the best by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education.

Graduates work within the sports or exercise fields to help individuals cope with injuries, manage stress, and maximize performance. Many students go on to graduate school. Some receive training in counseling or clinical psychology.

The program won the Distinguished Contributions to Education and Training in Exercise and Sport Psychology Award from the American Psychological Association, Division 47, in 2013.

WVU CPASS features the only Sport Management Program in the country that uses data from the ESPN Sports Poll in the classroom setting.

Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, Damien Clement teaches classes ranging from sport injury control and management to psychological perspectives of sport. He has earned the Excellence in Teaching Award and Researcher of the Year from the College. He serves as the undergraduate sport psychology club advisor.
