Paul Sereno grew up in Naperville, a suburb of Chicago, and studied art and biology as an undergraduate at Northern Illinois University. A behind-the-scenes museum tour opened his eyes to a life of science, art and adventure.

I Love Nature

I made it to college as an artist. I started to understand that this biology stuff is pretty interesting and evolution was pretty interesting and fossils were pretty interesting. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to be; an artist, a paleontologist? But one day, I walked into a museum in New York, and it all came before my eyes. I saw the adventure that I use to love so much as a kid during the summer, imagining myself going down the Mississippi River traveling. I saw the art that I so loved in school, and the science of discovery, the discovery of old things and bringing their lives back. This was what I wanted to do, and I wanted to do it now. I became a paleontologist at that very moment.

As an Explorer, the Greatest Places to

Explore are Places You Haven’t Been

The greatest places to explore are places where enough discovery hasn’t happened and, as a person, you have to convince somebody of the impossible. Discovery is about doing things that other people think are unlikely. It’s about going places where people haven’t been and there’s usually some reason for it. It’s hard to exist out there. It’s hard to do those things. It’s the hard things that haven’t been done.

Dinosaurs are the Icons for the Past

We live in the present. Everything we see and sense is today and yesterday and it takes us on a time travel to a world that we can only imagine. There’s nothing more that kids like to do than to imagine past worlds. Dinosaurs do that more than anything. They have personalities, they have habits, and they have lives. As a scientist, I’m lost in that world, and I’m just trying to bring it back. I’m wandering around discovering new things. Kids love that too. It’s a basic human occupation-imagination.

Paul Sereno is the author of books and stories in National Geographic and Natural History and subject of scores of documentaries. Sereno’s recognition includes Chicago Tribune’s Teacher of the Year award (1993), Chicago magazine’s Chicagoan of the Year (1996), Newsweek’s The Century Club (1997), People’s 50 Most Beautiful People (1997), Esquire’s 100 Best People in the World (1997), Boston Museum of Science’s Walker Prize for extraordinary contributions in paleontology (1997), Columbia University’s University Medal for Excellence (1999), the Roy Chapman Andrews Society’s Distinguished Explorer (2009), and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (2009).

Paleontologist Paul SerenoPaul Sereno talks about his latest fossil finds and upcoming expedition to the Sahara, as well as his public projects. Recent finds include the world’s first digging raptor and his public projects include a novel community center that also serves as a biome and library. 2pm Sun., Oct. 6 School age children (accompanied), teens and adults (R) Registration begins Sep. 1.

Dinosaur Discoveries: Ancient Fossils, New Ideas reveals a vivid picture of what living, breathing dinosaurs were really like. The engaging exhibition opens Saturday, October 5 at the Library. Using a combination of major fossil finds, captivating computer simulations and provocative models, the exhibit introduces a dynamic vision of dinosaurs and the scientists who study them.

“This exhibition illustrates how scientists are using new ideas, new discoveries and new technologies to revolutionize our understanding of dinosaurs,” says Mark A. Norell, curator of Dinosaur Discoveries and Chair and Curator of the Division of Paleontology at the American Museum of Natural History. “Our work reaches across many disciplines involving paleontologists, biomechanical engineers, paleobotanists, and others to showcase how we go about reconstructing the mysterious life of dinosaurs.”

Exhibition Highlights How Dinosaurs Moved: • A video on T. rex depicting how experts in biomechanics and paleontology are teaming up to estimate the typical speed and gait of a rampaging tyrannosaur. • A full-size cast skeleton leg of a Tyrannosaurus rex. • A stunning model of an Apatosaurus skeleton neck. • See a computer animation of the steel robo-dinosaur skeleton that morphs into a realistic fossil skeleton then gradually adds layers of muscle and skin until a full-fleshed Apatosaurus is moving on the screens. The Liaoning Forest: A diorama depicting a section of a 130-million-year-old forest that existed in what is now Liaoning Province, China. Fossil discoveries from Liaoning have shed light on the origins of birds, mammals, feathers, flight and flowering plants. How Dinosaurs Behaved: Life-size models and skeleton casts illustrate theories on the purposes of the unusual horns, frills, crests and domes found on many dinosaur skulls—were they used for defense, mate recognition, or display?

Highlights include: • A case featuring various skulls, plates and other armor. • Twin life-size models of Protoceratops–one skeleton, the other fully fleshed out. • A life-size three-horned Triceratops skull. Extinction: In this section, visitors can explore the hard evidence for theories on the possible events that ended the Age of Dinosaurs, including asteroid impact, global climate change and massive volcanic eruptions, and the descendants of dinosaurs that walk among us today.

Dinosaur Discoveries: Ancient Fossils, New Ideas is organized by the American Museum of Natural History, New York (www.amnh.org), in collaboration with the California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco; The Field Museum, Chicago; the Houston Museum of Natural Science; and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, Raleigh.

Exhibition Opening9am-noon Sat., Oct. 5 (NR)Welcome the dinosaurs to the Library! Enjoy cookies, face painting, storytimes, photos and more! All ages.

The World of Dinosaurs: An Illustrated Tour by Mark A. Norell. Norell is a paleontologist at the American Museum of Natural History, home to our Dinosaur Discoveries exhibit. If you enjoy

seeing artistic renderings of what dinosaurs are believed to have looked like as well as photographs from archeological expeditions, this book is for you. There are many illustrations in color, some depicting colorful feathered dinosaurs, others engaged in their environment, be it land, water or air. Norell guides the reader through the various species and in the process provides facts and enjoyable, detailed photos and pictures to illuminate the ancient world of the dinosaurs.

This Year’s Selected Titles:

The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs A New History of a Lost World by Steve Brusatte (Available in all formats.) Brusatte, a paleontologist at the University of Edinburgh and an Ottawa, Illinois native, weaves together the origins of dinosaurs

and their dramatic demise as well as provides incredible discoveries from around the globe. Did you know that new species of dinosaurs are being discovered almost weekly? His enthusiasm about his field is contagious.

The Dinosaur Artist: Obsession, Betrayal and the Quest for Earth’s Ultimate Trophy by Paige Williams. Described by Steve Brusatte as “a cracking combination of true crime, dinosaurs and top-notch journalism” William’s book will introduce you to the

concept of “bones for sale” on the international market and who some of the major players are. She tackles the conflict between science and commerce on a global scale and, in the process, covers our human relationship with natural history.

Our community read returns! After a short break, we are back and ready to kick off our community-wide book club known as Ela Discovers (formerly One Book, One Reading Community).

Everyone can participate: read one or all of the selected books, share perspectives, attend a program, engage on social media and build a stronger community together. #eladiscovers2019

Ela Public Library’s Community ReadOctober 1–December 31

Over the past 10 years, thousands of residents have read our selected titles, attended related programs and participated in various book discussions. We encourage you to enjoy one or all of these titles and hope they become a part of your exploration of the Dinosaur Discoveries exhibit. Meet October’s Paleoartist Erin FitzgeraldFrom a very early age I have had a voracious passion for dinosaurs. My interest lead me to volunteer in the fossil lab at Chicago’s Field Museum. After receiving my degree in graphic design, I became a fossil preparator at the University of Chicago and The Field Museum. I prepared a

variety of fossils including dinosaurs, crocodiles, fish, dicynodonts and even humans. I have access to collections and researchers that give me great opportunities to bring scientific realism to my art, aligning closer to classical styles rather than the more abstract styles emphasized by school. My obsession as a child has grown from creating doodles and drawings, to making scientific art a joyous part of my profession. Contact Erin at [email protected].
