SMITTY’S

Blast from the pastBy Jason PriestFor the Denton Record-Chronicle

Whether searching for taffy or nostalgicknick-knacks, Atomic Candy fillsDentonite’s sweet cravings. Nestledbetween More Fun Comics and ChestnutTree at the corner of West Hickory andLocust, you might find storeowner TimLoyd enjoying his favorite candies;Cowtales or Napoleon Sours.

The new candy shop on the Squareopened in December of last year. TimLoyd, owner of Atomic, is not the averagecandy man. A former Mercedes mechan-ic of 20 years with plans to open his ownrepair shop, Loyd said he had alwayswanted to own his own company andwould eventually get to do something.Little did he know his life would changeafter making a joke to a friend who owneda popcorn shop.

“I told him I had money saved up and Ijokingly asked him if he would sell me hispopcorn business. He wouldn’t sell mehis shop but he would teach me the trade,”Loyd said.

With his friend’s mentorship and thesaved money, Mom and Popcorn came tolife in downtown McKinney. Machineswere bought, the process was learned andLoyd started producing gourmet popcornin-store. He decided to add nostalgiccandy brands because he felt it a better fit.

He has since moved the shop to theDenton Square.

Atomic is creating good foot traffic forthe downtown square and keeping thingsbusy, said Julie Glover, EconomicDevelopment Program Administrator forDenton. She said he is a seasoned storeowner and is doing very well at staying ontop of it.

“It appeals to a lot of the market. It’saimed at high school and college thatthink it’s cool and the baby boomers whoremember the candies from childhood,”said Glover. “It has a different targetaudience than usual.”

His new candy shop is a vintage blastfrom the sweet tooth past featuring 192candy dispensers and bins full of bulkcandy, four refrigerators stocked with 160different sodas including 35 different bot-tles of root beer, displays filled with a vari-ety of wrapped candy as well as shelvespiled with assorted trinkets and gag gifts.Loyd puts in a lot of work researching andsampling candies before he sells them to

the public.Loyd said he used to just drive through

Denton and never really stopped to lookaround until it was suggested by a friendwhen he was hunting a location for hisfuture business.

“Denton is a gold mine,” said Loydabout his new found home. “It’s morethan just a college town, it’s a melting pot.I live here … all my money is in Denton.”

Loyd and Atomic Candy had a warmwelcome from other businesses on theSquare despite the long presence of TheCandy Store. Loyd said he respects theirbusiness and tries to avoid stepping onany toes by trying to stay away fromchocolates.

Loyd has been investing a lot of timeinto his new shop. He works Mondaythrough Saturday from open until closeand is still there after hours, going overproduct orders, stocking inventory orworking on a new display. His girlfriendhas been helping when available andrecently started full time.

Although not everyone has a sweettooth, almost everyone can relate to cer-tain candies from their childhood. Loydenjoys the vocal customers who are excit-ed about seeing candy from their home-town or from when they were a kid andwatching them leave with a smile.

“Candy covers all age groups,” saidLoyd. “It triggers a part in the brain thatremembers when life was simple.”

“I love all the choices that they havehere. It’s a good price and I can try a lit-tle bit of everything,” said sophomoreMatt Hackler as he perused the pleasuredispensing bins that lined the wall.

As he surveyed the assortments ofcandy dispensers, he filled his bag with avariety of gummy, sour, sweet and choco-late treats. “This place is perfect when Iget my fat kid candy cravings,” saidHackler.

Loyd said he enjoys the retro nostalgicstyling and is a self-proclaimed sucker forauctions, garage sales and Craigslist. Hehas an eye for things that will make peo-ple stop and look. Some of the standoutsare the old card catalog, mail sorter, chicken coop and hardware store nail binhe stripped and painted to hold a varietyof sweet water taffy.

“[The retro styling] is obviously work-ing for him,” said Glover. “I think he real-ly used unusual items in a creative way.”

Former Dallas Cowboy gives back to communitiesBy Allison MillerFor the Denton Record-Chronicle

Standing six feet tall in his worn cow-boy boots, Walt Garrison, former DallasCowboy and rodeo star, welcomes friendsand family into his log cabin with a tip ofhis hat and a deep, southern “howdy.”

With a nickname like “The Cowboy’sCowboy,” his southern twang and fittedjeans with a permanent indentation of aCopenhagen ring in the back pocket areno surprise. Take a walk to his back roomwhere four walls guard his woodworkingshop or step outside of the log cabin andwander through the 32 acres of land sur-rounding the Argyle home. About 10 rop-ing steer and eight horses — two of whichbelong to his grandsons — wander about. An arena for his practice sits in front ofthe gravel drive lined with a few smokersand grills for his cookouts and his horsetrailers.

While some celebrities shield theirhomes from others with gates and securi-ty systems, Garrison has found a practicaluse for his. The arena in Garrison’s frontyard has been home to the Bill Robinson

Memorial Rodeo for more than 20 years. The first year, the rodeo took place atSmith Brothers in Denton. There was onescholarship of about $200 awarded.

“It started out as just a roping toremember Bill,” Garrison said.“Everything was donated. We didn’t haveany expenses.”

The following year, the rodeo was heldat an arena across the road fromGarrison’s home. By the third year, thebuilding of his home was complete and itwas the new home of the rodeo. Manypeople donated their time and conces-sions and the money raised was puttoward the 11 Bill Robinson MemorialScholarships of which two are academicand nine are athletic. Coors has donated40 to 50 cases of beer each year since thebeginning of the rodeo.

“It was a pleasure to donate to such agreat cause,” said Coors marketing man-ager Marvin Branch. “[Garrison] is sucha nice individual. I thought it was out-

standing, it was just the right thing to do.”Garrison also has a softer, more artistic

side. Walking into his home, eyes are imme-

diately drawn to the large, southern-stylechandelier hanging from the tall ceilingabove the living room coffee table.

Each surrounding wall is made of beau-tifully crafted logs; some with detailedcarvings created by Garrison.

Aside from the enormous collection ofknives sitting on the table in the entryway,he has a few stored out in his shop. Butthe knives are not a demonstration of hissouthern upbringing.

They are used to whittle little statues, toys, trinkets and flowers from chunks ofwood.

Four large bookshelves can be foundaround the house cluttered with his cre-ations as well as a shop full of completeand in-the-works pieces: some painted, some burned and some untouched.

His comedy is just another one of hishidden treats, every conversation riddledwith puns.

Many of the little wooden creations are

a symbol of the humor Garrison finds inlife.

Garrison even uses his downtime dur-

ing his retirement to contribute. When he is not out roping or going to

physical therapy for his torn rotator cuff,he can be found whittling his creationsinto masterpieces.

He does not sell them for a profit, buthe does use them for charitable purposes,he said, including many things that hesends to Oklahoma State University fortheir silent and live auctions. Garrisonsaid the last whittling he sent sold for$3,900.

OSU Vice President Gary Clark spokehighly of Garrison.

Clark worked with the football teamduring his freshman year at OSU,Garrison’s senior year.

“I was in awe of him right off the bat,”

he said. Clark always enjoyed Garrison’s“self deprecating humor.”

Now the vice president of universityrelations and an alumnus of OSU, Clarkhas had the opportunity to work withGarrison and his charitable contributions.

“As the old saying goes, if you ever haveto be stuck in a fox hole with someone,he’s the one you want to be with,” he said.“He’s somebody that’s always going to domore than his share. He is a genuine, exceptional guy.”

It is an honor to do things for OSU,Garrison says, because everything he hasis because of his time there.

Fame and fortune have changed his lifeand, from that, he has affected the lives ofmany.

“As the old saying goes, if youo ever have to be stuck

in a fox hole with someone, he’s the one you want to

A-train key part of UNT student’s dayBy Katie EngstromFor the Denton Record-Chronicle

It’s 7 a.m. Monday. Everyone’s favoritetime of the week.

Ara Andonian wakes up to the sound ofa beeping digital fire alarm. Although nota morning person, he drags himself out ofbed and dresses in the clothes he laid outthe night before.

He skips breakfast at home, hoping tohave time to grab a bagel at school for adollar. He jumps in his car and heads toHebron Station, and hops aboard the8:03 a.m. A-train to make it to his 9 a.m.class.

He settles in among dozens of fellowpassengers on the fairly antiquated, butstill functional, Budd Rail Diesel Car thatwas built sometime between 1949 and1962.

This is not Grand Central Station, andthere is no morning bustle like that of theNew York subway where morning passen-gers clamber over one another like aplague of locusts.

Andonian is a typical North Texasnative. He grew up in Carrollton, and now

attends college at the University of NorthTexas in Denton. The junior, who is aRadio, Television and Film major, hasattended UNT since fall 2011.

He gets up in the morning and getsready for school, just like most of morethan 33,000 of his peers. He has found amore economical way to get to class.

The 27-mile distance between his frontdoor in Carrollton and the UNT campuscreates a veritable nightmare for anyonewho’s ever traversed Interstate 35E. A tripthat should take about 20 to 30 minutescan take anywhere from 45 minutes to anhour or more, Andonian said.

His solution: the A-train, which openedon June 20, 2011, and allows passengersto travel from its DART Trinity Mills sta-tion in Carrollton to the DowntownDenton Transit Center, running along I-35E. The train was determined by theDenton County Transportation Authorityto be the most cost-friendly and efficientsolution to Denton county’s populationgrowth concerns. Andonian says it only

A-traintakes him about 35 minutes each way.

Stemming from a formal AlternativesAnalysis study conducted in 2004-2005,plans to break ground on the train’s sixstations commenced in May of 2005.According to the U.S. Census Bureaureport in 2010, Denton County’s popula-tion was 662,614, a 53 percent increasefrom 2000. By comparison, Texas’ popu-lation increased 20.6 percent in that 10year period.

Dee Leggett, vice president of commu-nications and planning for DCTA, saidthat the anticipated population growthfacing Denton County was a significantfactor in their decision to build the train.

Andonian says that although he has theoption of driving his car to school, heinstead chooses the train due to the risingcost of gas.

“Even though driving…would free meof planning my day around bus and trainschedules, gas can easily run up to $10 to$14 per day depending on its price,” hesays. “Not to mention the cost and hassleof parking (at UNT).”

A student pass for one semester on the

A-train is $175, “which is a really greatdeal,” he says.

Leggett says that along with populationconcerns, pollution, traffic and access tohealth care facilities were also factors inDCTA’s decision to build the train. Inaddition, she says, the planned expansionof I-35E helped spur its implementation.

While the DCTA looks to expand the A-train, Leggett says that it will have to findfunding partners before going beyondcurrent cities.

For now, she says that the DCTA’s goalsare to focus on current investments likeA-train and bus services in Denton,Lewisville and Highland Village.

In 2011, the American PublicTransportation Association determinedthat an average of 1,500 people ride theA-Train on an average weekday.

Andonian says he’s not really surprisedthat more people haven’t done the mathon the savings the A-train could bringthem.

“People generally don’t look into otherthings unless someone else they knowdirectly tells them about it,” he says, alsonoting that since the train only runs in themornings and evenings, it might not beconvenient for everyone.

DCTA plans to add mid-day rail service

in August and just debuted its newStadler GTW vehicles on the rail lastweek.

At the end of a long day at school,Andonian finally arrives at the HebronStation between 5:30 and 6 p.m.

He walks in the front door of his house20 minutes later, and slings his backpack

down like a railroad worker from thechain gang throwing down his gear. Andalthough he sets to laying out his clothesso he can do it all over again the next day,he has the satisfaction of knowing that thepains he takes for public transportationhave made his wallet just a little bit fatter, and the earth just a tiny bit greener.

Students find home away from homeBy Julia TsaiFor the Denton Record-Chronicle

Students scurry to class or linger withfriends past a trophy case near theirdorm’s entrance. Golden eagles, wingedhumans and genie lamps stand atopminiature towers erected in tribute to thewinners’ achievements. They’re a familiarsight to the students. Likewise, the atten-tion they receive in the press is no sur-prise. They’ve reached finals and semifi-nals in nationwide competitions such asthe Siemens-Westinghouse Science andTechnology Competition.

The University of North Texas’s GreenLight to Greatness billboards alongInterstate 35-E attest to their fame, dis-playing the faces of several Barry M.Goldwater scholars. One student beatcontestants from Columbia, Stanford andVanderbilt universities on Jeopardy!’sCollege Championship this year.

In UNT, they’re known as TAMSters, orjust TAMS students – short for the TexasAcademy of Mathematics and Science. Inthis two-year program, high-achieving

Texas students forgo their last two yearsof high school to take college courses andengage in research.

Their academic and competition suc-cesses come at personal expense. Theymust leave behind family, friends andclassmates two years earlier than mosthigh school graduates and live inMcConnell Hall, or the TAMS dorm, onthe UNT campus.

Many have to learn to cope with failureor study hard for the first time in theirlives. But they aren’t alone. Together, theTAMS students endure hardships andhelp each other survive – and have fun –while in the program.

Sometimes they do prefer to be at homebecause they miss Mom’s cooking andtheir friends, said Dr. Patrick Turnock, theTAMS academic psychologist.

Once a month, the dorm would closeon a weekend. Residents get the chance toreturn home, although they can also do soon any weekend, after filling out paper-work. A few from from El Paso andOdessa would stay with the host family of

a roommate or friend. Being so young and smart, they do face

some college jesting. TAMS students havedrawn fire from fellow school mates onthe UNT Meme Facebook page. In com-ments and in memes – pictures accompa-nied by a slogan – they’ve been calledannoying, nerds, Asian, anti-social. OneFebruary post escalated into an onlinewar, in which the students, with some

help from their college peers, fought todefend themselves from disparagingremarks. TAMS students also retaliatedwith its own meme page as a parody ofthe UNT version.

“I think it’s like teasing your little broth-er or sister,” Turnock said.

Ironically, most of the Facebook users

TAMS students

celebrate their

own home-

coming on the

UNT campus.

TAMSwho click the Like button of the so-calledanti-TAMS memes are from TAMS stu-dents, said Anne Base, a TAMS junior. Noneed to get serious when they’re justjokes.

Like normal high school students, theyget to enjoy prom, club activities and vol-unteering. They can perform in musicalsin Academy Players, write articles forION TAMS newspaper and build upcommunity service hours through HOPE– Helping Other People Everywhere.

“It’s more fun here than back in highschool,” senior Janani Sundaresan said. “Idon’t have to ask my parents to drive meto clubs and events.”

In what used to be the dorm’s cafeteria, which still retains the name ‘Mac Cafe,’students lounge, chat, snack, study, playand even sleep. Members of a roboticsteam were found sleeping on the floor onemorning, their robot half finished. Oneguy dozed off with a wrench in his hand.On a normal day, a few students sit attheir own table and stare at their laptops, their earbuds plugged in. Two occupy acouch and discuss a paper together.

When it is not quiet, some guys place astereo on the floor, turn on the hip hopmusic and start breakdancing. Close by,two challengers engage in a fencing duel, each wielding a several-feet-long PVCpipe with both hands. Every forwardthrust elicits a cracking noise that rever-berates throughout the room. One of thefighters pauses and steadies his oppo-nent’s weapon: “Whoa, be careful not tobreak it.” The pipes, after all, were amonga collection of materials given to themand their teammates to build a robot for acompetition.

Hall Director Candice Graning can befound at the front desk, where studentsoften meet with each other and hang outwith the building’s staff. Out of threedorms she has worked in so far,McConnell Hall is the best.

“I couldn’t ask for a better job,” she said, after noting how the residents take care ofthe building and of each other. She keepsin contact with them. Although they partways after graduation from TAMS, theconnection remains. Alumni keep in con-tact and plan a 20th class reunion in July.

“Voted Best Childcare 2012!”“Voted Best Childcare 2012!”

Student ministry makes mark on campusBy Julia TsaiFor the Denton Record-Chronicle

The night air buzzes with the pluckingof electric and acoustic guitars, the boom-ing of drums and the singing of worshiplyrics: “Yahweh, Yahweh, we love to singyour name, oh Lord!”

The human chest vibrates with thecadence. Bodies sway, eyes close, armsrise and heads tilt upward.

A young man shouldering a blue back-pack joins the crowd and begins noddinghis head to the beat. Others walk past andwonder at the rare sight, an outdoor eventhosted by the Baptist Student Ministry atthe University of North Texas.

Before it began, the worship leaderssummed up the reason for the event witha prayer: May God’s name be madefamous in this campus.

The BSM usually holds its Thursdayworship services in its modest, one-story,low-roof brick building directly acrossfrom the University Union. Sometimes itfeatures a guest speaker.

This particular early-April night con-cludes one of ministry’s many major out-

reaches during the school year.In 72 Hours of Prayer, a tent is set up in

the exact spot where the concert laterplays.

Small sheets of paper dangle from a fewclotheslines. On each are written namesand prayer requests, taken from a plasticjar labeled “Need a Prayer?” A couplemore posters repeat the call.

One girl notices a sign and approachesthe table.

“I’m pressed for time, but I really needthis,” the girl says, her voice shaking, eyeswatering, hand holding a phone to herear.

Not secluded to its Christian niche, theBSM welcomes anyone of any faith, phi-losophy and nationality into the BaptistStudent Center.

Members and visitors bond throughvarious activities and food. And the min-istry expands beyond the building’s walls. In the hour leading up to the outdoorworship, plastic-gloved hands dumpedcigarette butts, paper and plastic bits andstray foam peanuts into trash bags.Ungloved hands sported cardboard

posters that announced prayer offers toanyone on campus.

“Living the Christian life is not anon/off switch,” said Chelsea Turner, a

radio, television and film freshman and aBSM student leader. Christians are

always being watched. They’re supposedto be light in the world. They shine in herlife as well. Fellow BSM friends hang outin the dorm room she recently movedinto, watching “Fantastic Mr. Fox” on a19-inch TV. Several of them helped haulup Turner’s belongings to the third floor, after she sprained her ankle. On her desksits a laptop, on which she edited clips of72 Hours of Prayer and of BSM member’stestimonies as part of the video ministry.

Turner found out about the BSMthrough its First Flight Week event inlate-August. There she met her mentorAmanda Ratheal, a UNT alumna andone of two BSM campus missionaries, whose jobs are to connect with studentsand share their faith.

Ratheal has also fostered relationshipswith other students. She invited an inter-national student from Hong Kong, tostay in her home in Amarillo for the win-ter break.

No matter the charitable deed, sheguards against boasting herself.

“I’m a Christian because I followChrist, not because I do good things,” shesaid.

She still confesses her downfalls andfailures to fellow believers and to collegestudents. Being a leader means beingwilling to share both good and bad expe-riences.

BSM Director Stephanie Gates saidChristians do fail, constantly. Because offlaws like selfishness, pride and anger,

they need Jesus to restore their relation-ship with God.

When someone asks why Christiansdon’t do what they preach, she believesthat’s a time to apologize and explain whoJesus is and why they need Him everyday.

Like Ratheal, fellow campus mission-ary Randy McSwain eats out with stu-dents, mostly international students whoaren’t of the Christian faith.

He said he can recognize at least 115 ofthem but not all their names, so he some-times cheats by checking Facebook or justasks them again. He said he loves eachperson.

Once, an international student calledhim at midnight because her friend wasdrunk and asked him to pick them up.McSwain did so.

“You never know when that onemoment, they will get to know Jesus.”

and vegetable lasagnas, salad and garlicbread for a Wednesday free lunch.

They cater chili – with and withoutbeans, white rice, shredded cheese, sourcream, Fritos, fudge brownies and vanillaice cream for a Friday dinner duringwhat’s called WorldLife.

It invites international students to con-clude their school week with food, chatsand Bible study with BSM regulars.

A blend of accents fills the air: Chinese,Nigerian, Indian, French, Georgian,Pakistani, Korean, Brazilian, Texan.

One Wednesday afternoon, standingunder the sun in the long line that snakedout of the BSM’s front doors was worththe wait. Donna Lumpkins served theshredded lettuce and cheese, standingbehind a pan of the remaining taco meat. She and her congregation of First BaptistChurch of Argyle catered on the UNTcampus for the first time this April.

She laments that going to church isn’ton the top priority of many students.According to the Baptist General

Convention of Texas website, 70 percentof high school graduates stop attendingchurch.

Lumpkins’ pastor, Brad Elsom, takes ashort break from cleaning and packingup. He smiles at what the church hasdone for the students. “We wanna let ‘emknow God loves ‘em.”

On a normal day, refuge-seekers study, surf the Internet, take naps, play ping-pong and chess, give each other an occa-sional piggyback ride, refresh themselveswith drinks, pray together, and talk aboutlife and Jesus.

They reminisce on kayaking inManitoba on a high school trip andpulling three all-nighters in a row for aschool project.

One remembered walking aroundschool with a makeshift dragon tattoobecause some eleventh grade classmateswanted to play Connect the Dots on herfreckled arm. The Baptist Student Centeralso serves as a rest stop for bus driverswho shuttle UNT students and personnelacross campus all day.

The BSM didn’t always have a building.

From Page 31

Denton Baptist students first gathered ina cornfield since 1890 before they movedinto homes that served as student centers.More than half a century later, the BaptistGeneral Convention of Texas, which rep-resents at least 5,000 Baptist churches, built and still owns the BSM center that

now stands. The building will give way toa new structure once the funds have beenraised. It will continue fostering believersand welcoming non-believers through itsWednesday free lunches, Thursday wor-ship and Bible study, and FridayWorldLife.

The history keeper

By Michael HutchinsFor the Denton Record-Chronicle

KKRRUUMM — The sound of footsteps clat-ter through the old building that onceserved as Krum’s only bank, years after itgave up that life. The brass teller cages, antique wooden signs, and bank vault allremain, but have been given a new pur-pose. The building now serves as thehome of the Krum Heritage Museum.Today, instead of being visited by a crowdof adults eager to make deposits and with-drawals, a group of excited third gradershave come to get a taste of Krum’s 125-year past.

The children spread out across thebuilding like kids in a candy store ratherthan a museum, eager to see the old pho-tos on the walls, the flat-screen televisionhanging nearby that shows movies aboutthe city’s past, a scale model of the towncirca 1940, the crank record player, andthe box baby grand piano. The childrenavoid the vintage, sawdust-stuffed dollsthat sleep in a crib that had been passeddown for generations because of the

strange expressions and half-closed glasseyes.

Della Davis, the 70-year-old mindbehind the Krum Heritage Museum, feelsa tug on her sleeve as she takes a momentto rest her bones at the worn front desk ofthe museum. Della looks down at the boywith a bright smile, ready to answer anyquestion he might have.

“Miss Della, how did the people carrythose phones in their pockets,” he asks, pointing to one of the vintage woodencrank phones leaning against the wall.

While Krum has been around for over100 years, the majority of the populationhas lived in the community for less than adecade. As Krum moves away from itspast as a ranching and agricultural center, its identity is shifting away from theseindustries, becoming what some havecalled a “bedroom community” wherepeople spend little time in the city itself. As the city is reborn in a new form, muchlike the bank building, the heritage andhistory of the community risks being for-

gotten as the population gradually losesits ties to the past.

Della is not quite sure why she startedcollecting the trinkets that would latermake up the museum pieces. However, she can still remember starting her collec-tion at the age of 16 in 1958. Her firstpiece was an old steel box of vintage glassnegatives from a local photographer whowas moving out. The negatives showedKrum at the turn of the twentieth centu-ry, with the images straight out of the oldwest with wooden storefronts, horse-drawn carriages, and dirt roads thatflooded with a heavy rain. The photoscontinue up until the 1930s, showing thetransition from the horse and carriage tothe Model T and the growth of Krum.

Despite not knowing why she started,Della knows why she continues to workinto her retirement.

“I do this now for my kids, for all of thekids,” said Davis. “I want them to knowthe history of their home.”

In the 54 years since she began, her col-

lection has grown to a massive collectionof photo albums, obituaries, newspaperarticles, school yearbooks and local busi-ness letters along with other trinkets andrelics from estate sales as members of thecommunity passed away. These days, many people simply donate pieces rang-ing from dresses to flour sacks when thetime comes to clear a home. JaniceCallarman, a volunteer at the museum, jokes that Della would sometimes getannoyed if someone cleared out a homewithout letting her know first.

The museum opened in 2010 when thebank and the other buildings in the com-plex were donated to the Krum HistoricalSociety, the city of Krum and the KrumPolice Department. The museum kept theoriginal bank teller cages and restoredthem to their previous shine, while thevault serves as an impromptu office andsafe house for some of the museum’s morefragile pieces like Della’s glass negatives.

Krum resident works to save past for next generations

See HISTORY on Page 46

Page 46: Discovering Denton County 2012

“We know we are not the only museumwith teller cages,” says Janice. “But welaugh when they ask where we foundours.”

The museum is funded by donationsand fundraising by the Krum Society forHistorical Preservation, to which Dellabelongs. Many of the officers, such asJanice, give up their Saturdays to volun-teer at the museum and give their take onthe history of the city. To push the moneyas far as she can, Della cuts costs whereshe can. While working during the week, she will often give up air conditioning andflorescent lighting in exchange for freenatural lighting through the museum’sfront glass windows. Della has been try-ing to educate the newer residents ofKrum, starting at a young age. She hasworked with Bonnie Barthold, a thirdgrade teacher in Krum, to make local his-tory a part of the curriculum. Bartholdwas one of only a few teachers to includelocal history as a part of their lessons.

In this push, Della donated copies oftwo of her four books written on the city’shistory to the third grade classes and

invited the students to visit the museumeach year around May. Many times, thechildren will return to the museum, bringing their parents with them.

Della has a special collection, amongthe other documents in the museum. While it does not tell the history of thetown, it carries a special meaning to Della. In a folder tucked away in the front desk,Della keeps every thank you letter she hasreceived from the third graders. While theart is different on each, with the student’sfavorite part of the museum, the samemessage is scrawled in multi-colored pen-cil: “Thank you.”

Della’s most prized piece is the person-al diary of Hattie Dyer, a teacher who wasa center for the community for over 30years. The diary describes Hattie’s tripacross North America in the late 1920s.Hattie wrote on her visits to Upstate NewYork, Niagara Falls, Cuba, and Florida.Hattie described Florida as large andcompletely empty.

“If she could go back on that trip, she’dfind a lot of things have changed sinceback then,” Della said.

Della feels a connection to Hattie, asshe was her teacher in elementary school. The museum has an entire wall dedicatedto Hattie and her contributions to the city

and the school system. Janice Callarman enjoys the model

town, but cannot help but critique someof the inaccuracies in the layout.

“It isn’t very accurate. These windmillswere not here, and these houses were a bitfurther down,” she says, pointing to thethree extra windmills in the diorama.

She remembers that the town only hadone windmill on the main road in town.As a child in the 1940’s she used toexplore the town, memorizing the fea-tures. Included in the museum are photosdating back to the 1900s, a railroadswitch and rafter from the long extinctSanta Fe rail depot that created the city, sickles, scythes, and cattle yolks fromwhen Krum was one of the biggest grainand livestock producers in the state, andfinally basketball trophies from Krum’srecent history as a powerhouse in AA divi-sion sports.

With the donations of photos, part ofDella’s work becomes piecing together thetattered pictures into a full picture of thecommunity from one generation to thenext. One mystery that Della is investigat-ing to this day is a picture of a family out-side one of the houses in the town. Thehouse sports two front doors which standperpendicular to each other, meeting at

the bottoms of two twin sets of steps at theground level with potted plants sitting atthe base. “We think this might be theLang house,” she said. “But anyone whowould know is gone.”

Many times Della will spend someevenings driving down the well-traveledand familiar streets of her home trying tomatch clues from the photos to currentlocations, but decades of wear and repairmake the job impossible in some cases.

“The places I knew as a kid are gone,”she said. “I mean, the building is there butthe name and the face have changed.”

The museum itself is hoping to expandinto the second floor of the building.

“History establishes identity, so the his-tory of a town determines its identity,”said Dr. Mike Campbell, chief historianwith the Texas State HistoricalAssociation. “If the people do not knowwhat their town has been, they do notknow what it is now, and they have less ofa basis for knowing what they should tryto do next for their town.”

Despite this, she isn’t worried about thefuture of the museum she helped create.S“There will always be someone to comealong,” Della said. “Some kid might comearound and pick up my work where itstopped.”
