There is good news for anyone interested in joining a local U3A. The group, which gives

Welcome to our May edition...

Front cover by Chris Brudenell

Welcome to our May edition of “Discovering Whittlesea”. We have another

packed issue and some exciting community news.

Last month, we were busy at the Mayor’s Duck Race, which saw hundreds of plastic ducks race along the river. You can see our gallery of pictures on page 16 We also had the Citizens’ Award Ceremony, which crowned yet again

more deserving people in our community. You can read the full report, and find out who won the various awards, on page 32.

Don’t miss our events page for a selection of some great entertainment coming up. Plus, of course, our regular pages, including gardening tips, this month’s tasty recipe and our pets’ page.

Finally, we’d like to wish you a lovely May, and we’ll see you next month.

Finally, thank you to everyone who sent in photographs for our front cover, and to those of you who took part in our successful Easter Egg competition.

Please note the editorial deadline for the June issue will be May 12th.

Garden Jobs for Mayl Structures. In dry spells, you can treat timber structures with wood preservative and stain. Make sure you use appropriate products - Creosote, for example, is no longer legal. Check and repair pergolas, arbours and arches if needed.l Hoe off weeds.Dig out tough perennial weeds with a fork. If you’re treating them with a weed killer remember to catch them at the start of flowering to get the best results.l Mow lawns weekly. The lawn will need regular mowing from now until autumn. Feed your lawn after mowing to give it a good start to the year. A high nitrogen summer lawn fertiliser will encourage a healthy looking lawn. If moss is a problem apply a combined fertiliser and moss killer.l Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of daffodils and other spring flowering bulbs. When they’ve finished flowering only remove the dead flower heads. Don’t cut down the foliage as this provides the bulb with food for next year’s flowers. Your bulbs will also benefit from an application of liquid fertiliser.

ith the spring bulbs fading and the herbaceous border growing in leaps and bounds, it is now clear that summer is approaching. Spring flowering plants will need clearing in preparation for summer bedding. It’s also time to get back into the lawn mowing regime as the lawn will love the warmer temperatures this month brings. If you’re in the garden this month you can be getting on with the following:

l Protect tender plants.Late frosts could still cause damage to young plants.l Earth up potatoes and promptly plant any still remaining. When potatoes have emerged a few inches pull earth around the plant with a rake. This will give the plant more soil to grow in and improves drainage.l Plant out summer bedding.Lift out old plants, run a fork through the soil and add a good fertiliser before replanting summer plants.

D I S C O V E R I N G Whittlesea | May 201510

Cllr Dave Mason

And so we come to my final contribution to this splendid Magazine in my capacity as Mayor of Whittlesey, a role that I have enjoyed immensely, having felt privileged to have been given the opportunity of serving my town in such a prestigious position. The articles that I have written over the past two years have been designed to keep the citizens of Whittlesey and its surrounding villages up to date with local events and the work of its Town Council. At their conclusion I would like to take time to reflect on the progress that Whittlesey has made over the past two years. Forty years ago, when Ann and I first moved into the Area, there was talk of providing a bridge over the King’s Dyke crossing and I remember attending Sir Harry Smith Community College to view feasibility study illustrations. Now at last, after full public consultation, we are in a position where funding is in place to provide such a crossing in line with public wishes, at a cost exceeding £16 million and, if all goes well, work will start in 2016. This project owes much to the hard work and dedication of our two Cambridgeshire County Councillors, Ralph Butcher and Martin Curtis, who have been influential in realising a dream for so many. Another subject that has occupied present and previous generations around Whittlesey has been the threat of flooding to homes on the north side of the town. My thanks again to the many who supported my charities by purchasing my publication entitled “Whittlesey in Flood”. The Whittlesey Washes have long been used as natural reservoirs to relieve the River Nene at certain times of the year. They are not designed to accommodate the building of new homes within the immediate vicinity of the flood plain area, and Whittlesey Town Council has fought long and hard to repel any such plans. My Deputy Mayor, Cllr. Dee Laws, has been particularly passionate on this subject, co-ordinating a flood warden group, keeping the public and local authorities aware of the dangers and organising fund raising to finance these initiatives. The Environment Agency are currently investing £21.5million in strengthening the banks of the River Nene in this regard. The public concerns over road safety on the North Bank road between Whittlesey and Peterborough have been addressed in that a 40mph speed limit has been imposed on this road with appropriate signage. Road side barriers have been erected for public safety and automatic barriers have been installed at strategic points to deter the public from accessing this area in times of danger. The Localism Act was introduced in November 2011. The aim of the act was to devolve more decision-making powers from central government back into the hands of individuals, communities and councils. The Act covers a wide range of issues related to local public services, with a particular focus on the general power of competence, community rights, neighbourhood planning and housing. In conjunction with this, Whittlesey Town Council are in the process of constructing a

Neighbourhood Plan for the good of all in our local community. The provision of a Sainsbury’s supermarket, business and country parks in Eastrea Road has been the subject of prolonged negotiations, during which time I have personally been maintaining dialogue with senior members of the Sainsbury’s Board of Directors, and at present the signs are that this project will indeed move forward, despite the national trends against retail developments. I am very conscious of the need to promote Whittlesey to the wider world and I am very grateful to Cllr. Gary Swan who has been instrumental in bringing the “Circuit of the Fens Cycling Festival” to our town over the past two years. This event has acquired national importance in the cycling calendar and I am delighted that the third festival will take place on Sunday July 26th this year, supplementing our already successful Straw Bear and Whittlesey Festivals. The past two years have seen the emergence, and considerable success of, our Whittlesey in Bloom team, admirably led by Cllr. Mrs Kay Mayor, together with the formation of my own project, Whittlesey Emergency Food Aid, both further evidence of the growth of a stronger Whittlesey community. The coming regeneration of the Buttercross area will further enhance our town and promote our well-being. It is my wish in the coming year to co-ordinate the formation of a new Business Forum in the town to further support our local traders and would ask any trader interested in joining this scheme to contact me personally. As a former President of the now disbanded Whittlesey Chamber of Trade, and as a founder member of the Whittlesey Christmas Lights Committee, I hope to be able to make a telling contribution in promoting local trade. When you read this article, local and national elections will almost be upon us. Four of our local councillors, Derek Stebbing, Ken Mayor, Pauline Edge and Gary Swan will not be standing for re-election, with Martin Curtis stepping down from District and County Councils to concentrate on his new business role, whilst applying for re-election as a Whittlesey Town Councillor. Whatever the make-up of the new Whittlesey Town Council, I am proud of the many achievements of the present council and thank all councillors for giving up their time and volunteering without payment to safeguard the future of our town. I thank you all for reading my articles and also those who have kindly complimented me on their content. My best wishes and thanks to you all………..

Three generations were on the fundraising ticket sales desk, with Sue Evans, Victoria Evans and Averil Cosstisk selling ducks right up to the last minute for the annual Mayor’s Charity Duck Race. David Mason, the town’s Mayor, started the race from Briggate Bridge as the ducks were dropped into the Bower. With a slight head wind, they were assisted towards the finish line by water jets, provided by the Whittlesey firemen. With twenty metres to go, ducks “236” and “413” made a break from the pack to finish a good five feet, and a short beak, in front of the rest of the flock. All proceeds from the sale of tickets go to boost the Mayor’s Charities.

Proudly in association with Wrights of Whittlesey

t is the year 291 and Britain has its own self- proclaimed Emperor, Carausius, who commands the Roman forces that protect the province of Britain against the Saxon raiders. The islands of Whittlesey are settled by Roman and British farmers and, at each end of the main island, are two settlements, the eastern one of which, at Eldernell, contains a Mansio a kind of Roman Inn used by the military on the road known as the Fenland Way. Justin had been newly promoted to junior surgeon and posted from across the Empire to Garionnum on the east coast of Britain. Garionnum was one of a number of naval fortresses guarding Britain against the roving bands of Saxons, the Sea Wolves, who raided the Channel and coasts of the southern part of the province. At first very lonely, Justin had made friends with a Centurion known as Aquila and when the opportunity of some leave came up, Aquila invited him to join in visiting his Aunt Honoria who lived at Durobrivae (near modern day Peterborough). Towards the end of the day, the sky drew dark and heavy and Justin’s mount was beginning to go lame. “It’s no good pushing on to Durobrivae,” said Aquila, “ Aunt Honoria isn’t expecting us till at least tomorrow at any case. The family farm is nearer. We’ll head along the road to the Mansio and then the family farm, and descend on Servius. He’ll be glad to see us - and so will the farm.” And then as Justin looked at him sideways, he grinned but said seriously enough, “The farm is always pleased to see people it is fond of, and who are fond of it. You can feel it being pleased - like an old wise hound.” And when, towards dusk with pools of water gleaming in the ruts of the wagon way, they came through a little wood of oak and birch and wild cherry, and saw the house with its farm buildings at the head of a dip in the land looking out over the fenland, and Justin knew what he meant. He felt the welcome reaching out to them, and knew that it was for him also, as though, stranger as he was, the place knew him for one of his own, and was glad of his coming. Presently there were other welcomes; from Servius the old steward who had been an optio (sergeant) under Aquila’s father Marcus; from Cutha his wife, and Kyndylan his son, when he came up

IThe Roman Age. Month 3.

from the cattle; from the other farm-hands, free men and women, all of them. “Aunt Honoria has a few old slaves,” Aquila said, “but we have always farmed with free labour. It makes it difficult at times, but we manage. Couldn’t change.” They spent three days at the farm while a fresh horse was found for Justin, and it was during those days that he first really discovered Britain. The green spring woods dappled still with brown and red like a partridge’s breast, the slow broad river at the foot of the fields; the long low house itself, built on to by succeeding generations but holding still at its heart the smoke - blackened atrium, used as a store - room now, that had been the original houseplace, built by another Aquila making a home for himself and his British wife and the children that came after - these were all Britain to Justin. At the end of the last day, the two friends were leaning on a wall by the vine terraces on the warm southern slope. From where they were, they could see the whole farm lying clear down to the fen all quenched and quiet in the first faint flickering of twilight. Aquila leant forward to call to Servius, who had appeared at the lowest of the terraces. The old man looked up and saw them and altered course towards them, marching up with that long legionary tread he was used to. “I see you.” He halted just below them. “Cutha has supper almost ready.” And he went swinging off into the softly gathering dusk, toward the light that had sprung up marigold - coloured in the houseplace window. “Come on,” Aquila smiled, I want my supper.”

Have you noticed the beautiful colour of daffodils around our town and villages? The beautifulcrocuses and snowdrops that came earlier at Plough Road? Most of these have been planted by our Street Pride Group over the last eight years. We have decided that there are enough for the time being. So this year, like last, we plan to sow around one million wild flower seeds. Last year, we seeded poppies at the Bower side of the Manor field. This year, we will sow avariety of different wild flowers, and we hope that these will attract bees and other insects. Street Pride would like to thank Mr Bruce Roan, and his customers at The Letter B pub on Church Street, who has kindly sponsored this year’s campaign. Bruce has supported many deserving local groups and charities over many years, so again a very big thank you. Our core litter picking events are still going very strong, and we have a number of Street Priders who go out regularly around various parts of the town to help keep our town reasonably clean and tidy.

We all know that the ‘litter lout’ will never go away and I, and others, find it very annoying to find fast-food boxes/wrappers that make it all the way from Peterborough. Geoff was well-known in Whittlesey, through his work with The Straw Bear Festival, involvement with the Church, and of course writing his regular history article in Discovering Whittlesea. He was a kind, generous and much-loved man, and he will no doubt be sorely missed by everyone who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. May you rest in peace Geoff.

We need your helpMacmillan Cancer Support in Cambridgeshire is looking to hear from anyone in the Whittlesey area who would be interested in helping out on a regular or ad hoc basis as a Collections Volunteer. With the number of people living with cancer set to double by 2030, Macmillan Cancer Support needs the support of more local people in Whittlesey and the surrounding area with a little or a lot of a time to spare! We are looking for people with an hour or two a week to spare who could represent Macmillan in the local area by seeking opportunities to place our collection tins and opportunities to hold collections. By collecting and paying in valuable funds you can make a real difference to both Macmillan and, ultimately, to the lives of people affected by cancer. The types of activities that you could be involved in include:• Seeking opportunities to place collection tins in local shops, restaurants and areas within the community.• Seeking opportunities for collections at local shops and supermarkets.• Emptying and servicing collection tins in the local community.• Collecting funds on behalf of the charity• Liaising with your local Fundraising Manager.• Paying-in funds. In return, as one of Macmillan’s fantastic volunteers you’ll benefit from:• Having your expenses paid within agreed guidelines.• The full support of your local fundraising

team.• The chance to boost your CV.• You will receive an induction when you start and the training needed to complete the role. Jess Levin, local Fundraising Manager, says: “Macmillan is such a worthwhile cause and people really do have a lot of fun volunteering for us in the community. We would just love to hear from anyone who has time, whether it’s a couple of hours a year or a week, it really doesn’t matter. We just need the extra help’. If this sounds like something you might be interested in, we would love to hear from you. To find out more information and to express your interest, please visit http://volunteering.macmillan.org.uk/ or contact your local Macmillan fundraising manager, Jess, on [email protected] or calling 07894 566 608.

One of the great joys of my Pastoral role is seeing people change, some more dramatically than others. Despite the countless pressures and demands on my time and experience that seem to grow with every passing week, seeing the way each department carried out their presentations with confidence and meaning during the recent Easter Celebration, really does make it all worthwhile. Speaking personally, I think this Celebration Service was the best yet; if you didn’t manage to make it, you really must make our next Christmas one a priority. What, you might be asking, has this opening statement got to do with the subject of this editorial? As I looked at each person and department throwing themselves with so much confidence into their presentations, I recalled the journey that many of them had made, some from difficult backgrounds or low self-esteem. But the thing which impressed me was seeing the change that had taken place - they were not the same people they were a year or more ago. Each time I see people discover a new meaning and purpose to their life, I am reminded that the message coming out from our churches should be one of hope to the countless numbers of people who are facing a future full of hopelessness and despair. In a generation that is being constantly bombarded to conform to certain stereotype images, or attain a particular social standing in order to feel worth something, it is growing increasingly difficult for people to see how important and valuable they are in their own right.

Throughout the pages of The Bible, God has left humanity with some very powerful words of wisdom:“you can only love others to the degree that you love yourself,”

“as a person thinks in their heart, that’s what they will become.”

In my long career of presenting the relevance of the message of Jesus Christ to a society with deep underlying problems, I’ve learned that, many times, before any significant and lasting progress can be made, it is vital to help people regain a sense of self-worth regardless of the situations they face. In closing, let me leave you with this thought …. “having a problem does not make you a problem person, it simply makes you a person with a problem.” For a moment, stop looking at what you perceive as deficiencies in your life, and start seeing yourself as someone who has so much to give, someone of value and potential. We would love the pleasure of your company this Sunday at 10.45am.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT YOURSELF? | A word from Brian Smithyman

| Policing your area by Paul Harris, Whittlesey Geographic SergeantAfter an arrest for the car crime series, the investigation closed with a person charged with a number of offences who will be attending court soon. Hopefully, our hard work will reflect a positive result! Our patrols have made us very visible, which has given us some great feedback from the community. It has also resulted in some impressive results. A motorcyclist was stopped and found to be a drugs courier. A car has also been seized when the driver was found to have no insurance. Finally, a number of people were “stop-searched” throughout the area in the early hours, who had no explanation for being there and one was found to be in possession of drugs. We have maintained some excellent communication with people we have identified as vulnerable who live within the community. This work has formed good relationships, and we are stopping further offences occurring against them. This has given them more confidence, which allows them to

go about their daily business, giving them back a quality of life that perhaps we can sometimes take for granted. Sadly, I have received information that thefts are occurring in the cemetery, off Cemetery Road. This happened last year and stopped, but the issue has raised its head again, causing great distress to families and friends of loved ones who are laid to rest there. I have spoken with those who are passionate about the cemetery, and between us have managed to get others to report some of the issues to us. If you use the cemetery and have suffered thefts, or any incidents, please report it so I can understand the full picture. Finally, your community priority of parking throughout the town has received much attention. Over twenty-five tickets have been issued this month in the areas you have highlighted to us. Please park legally and be considerate to those around you.

Many people know of the Ten Commandments, The Law given to Moses by God. The people are to follow these laws. Their observance will give them identity as the people of God. During Lent, members of the town’s Anglican, Methodist-United Reformed, Roman Catholic Churches and the Salvation Army had the opportunity to meet together and consider the Commandments and their place in our modern lives. The quotation above is from the Third Commandment; it emphasises a need for a Sabbath, a special ‘day’ to make time for God in our otherwise busy lives. The Sabbath is the day on which God rested after the work of Creation. A Sabbath rest for us allows us to imitate God. He rested from His labours and so can we. We might be able to make this one whole day a week or

we may have to take time out of different days, depending on lifestyles, work and family demands. We all benefit from taking rest. Having a Sabbath approach to our life will bring us closer to God and those with whom we share our lives. For some people, keeping the Sabbath holy, i.e. being faithful to, and aware of the closeness of God in their lives, means going to church. For others, however, it is the weekly gathering of family for a meal or some other shared activity. We would like to encourage you to rest in God and open your heart to Him. Finding time for the Sabbath experience will help you discover what is holy in your life.

“Observe the Sabbath day and keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. For six days you shall labour and do all your work. But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord

your God; you shall not do any work.” (Deuteronomy chapter 5 verses 12 to 14)

At long last, some warm weather has arrived just in time to see our local waters spring to life. Already we have seen some tremendous match weights from the likes of Decoy Lakes at Eastrea. Many anglers will not be that keen on fishing matches but the results are a good indication as to how waters are fishing under the pressure

of anglers all around the lakes. Pellet and maggot always work well at this time of year, but a top tip from many of the regulars is to always have a pot of good old-fashioned worms with you. They are an ideal bait at any water and often produce the bigger fish from the margins. Big fish waters such as East Delph Fishery have seen regular big carp catches, although pegs are very limited so best to get booked in, to ensure a peg at weekends. Float Fish Farm continues to add lakes to the fishery, a new lake will be open in early May and owner Dale

Hudson tells me the stocking levels are very high in this pool, so it sounds like fun for all. Over at Railway Lakes, there have been lots of good nets from the smaller lake, and at last the deep-water lake has started to show some good form. This lake is well worth a visit as you can fish it on a day ticket and be in with a chance of catching fish of 30lb plus. If you are looking for a more leisurely approach, then why not give Northey Park Fishery a try? It’s situated just off the North Bank at the Peterborough end... lots of small lakes, peaceful surroundings and a pleasant day is yours for the taking. For those that enjoy surface fishing, then you have to give Kingsland out at Coates a try - not too many of you though, as it has to be one of my favourite waters for catching carp off the top. Do not be fooled into thinking it’s only small carp either. I have had fish going close to 20lb and I know of others that have had much bigger fish. Bread is best for me but a close second is oily floaters by Sonu Baits or dog biscuits, all more than capable of bagging that fish of a life-time off the top. Pick a warm day and you will not go far wrong.

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Whittlesey, Eastrea & Coates areas and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much

a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Winner of Young Citizen of the Year 2015, went to a young man, only six years old, who helped his grandmother at virtually every fundraising event for the Whittlesey Charity Defibrillators since October 2013. Finley Coulson wanted to be involved after his Godmother collapsed and died from a cardiac arrest in August 2013, and being keen to help, he has spread the word constantly not only about defibrillators, but more importantly, how to use them. He has been instrumental in raising in excess of £4,250 for defibrillators and is a credit not only to himself but to his family and Whittlesey as a whole. The award for Whittlesey Citizen of the Year 2015, was made posthumously, for the very first time, to a young lady who, despite being diagnosed with cancer at the age of fourteen and losing a leg to this terrible disease, never lost her zest for life and indeed retained her enthusiasm and optimism. Despite missing a year’s education at SHSCC, Shannon Corr successfully achieved her GCSEs and secured a place at Manchester University, which sadly she was unable to take up due to the progression of her illness. Undeterred, she volunteered at Park Lane Primary School in Whittlesey as a Teaching Assistant and won both the love and respect of children and staff alike. Sadly, the fight for life was lost last year. Her mother, Jeanette, accepted the award on her daughter’s behalf. The Outstanding Achievement Award 2015, was given to Averil Cosstick, who moved to Whittlesey in 1998 and became involved in the local community. She is a dedicated member of the Nova Ladies Club and is involved in the preparation work for the annual Whittlesey Festival. She is also a member of the Whittlesey branch of the Royal British Legion. A founder member of the New Queen Street Patient Participation Group, she also organises coach holidays and assists Park Lane Primary School pupils with their reading and rehearsals. All this, and Averil still finds time to look after her husband who suffered a stroke. Finally, special merits were awarded to Lois Russell, who raised funds for Cancer Research, and Darcie Tegerdine, who raised £2,000 for Cancer Research and the Princes Trust, by having her head shaved. Lorna Yaxley, Kevin Dufton, James Moore, Jon Fone, Graham Clifton and Tim Earp accept the District Commander’s Commendation Award, in recognition of their collective professional response to a violent incident.

LOANS SCHEME

WHITTLESEY LADYSMITH W.I.Linda Scholes is a popular speaker with local clubs and organisations, and has a huge range of interesting topics. With this in mind, we have chosen a musical theme for our May meeting, when Linda will use her considerable talent on "Name That Tune", which is sure to be a lot of fun. This is an open meeting, so all are welcome and the cost for visitors is £3, which includes refreshments.

There will also be a bring-and-buy stall, and the competition is for something American, which will be judged by our speaker who hails from the USA. Come along on Tuesday May 12th at 7.30pm to St Andrew's Hall, Parkinsons Lane, Whittlesey. For further information, please contact Sue on 01733 205927.

For many years, St John Ambulance has been providing a medical loans scheme in Whittlesey, allowing members of the public to make use of a number of different types of equipment, such as wheelchairs and crutches. Local residents will have seen posters around the town advising of the closure of the loans scheme in early 2015. Tony Curd, District Manager for St John Ambulance with responsibility for units in Cambridgeshire and Suffolk, said: “We have been reviewing the services provided to our local communities and part of that review is to ensure that they are delivered as efficiently as possible and to see whether other providers already offer similar schemes. Over the years, we have built up a number of activities which contribute to the wellbeing of those who use them, such as the Whittlesey medical loans scheme. Growing demand for our volunteers to deliver first aid in the community, at local events and provide first-aid training, has led us to take some difficult decisions, and has meant that we will be focusing our work locally on these areas from 2015. “The medical loans scheme is an excellent charitable project which the Whittlesey unit has been proud to deliver over many years. A number of items which we used to loan out will still be available in the community as we are donating them to local care homes. The NHS still of course offers a medical loans service and I would encourage local people who need this type of assistance to approach that source from now. We’d like to pass on our thanks to all those who have supported our service over the years.” For more information about St John Ambulance or about first-aid training, go to www.sja.org.uk or call 08700 104950.

First of all, on behalf of the Whittlesey branch and its members, we would like to send a big thank-you to our mayor, councillor David Mason, for his most generous donation of £1,000.00 from his nominated charity fund to our branch. The donation is most welcome at this time and we will be shortly deciding how to use it for the good of the community, and our local veterans in particular. As mentioned recently, there will be a service at the Whittlesey Memorial at 11.00am on Friday May 8th , to recognise the 70th anniversary of the end of World War 2, V.E. Day. We warmly invite members of the public to join us for this short service. Another service, to commemorate V.J. Day, will hopefully be held later in August. Plans are also being made for our street party to take place on Saturday May 9th, in the afternoon, at the Ivy Leaf Club. This will consist of “40s style” stalls, fancy dress and other competitions, as well as music and dancing. Tickets will be £5.00 each and for more information, please contact Sue Brown on telephone no. 01733 202579. To end with, we do not normally use this column for obituaries but would like to mention the recent sad loss of member Ken Austin. Ken was a vice-president of the branch and his happy, smiling face will be sorely missed. He was a long standing and knowledgeable member of our branch and fulfilled many duties at branch and county level. A true gentleman - and our condolences go out to his family.

Nature vs Nurture: Who is in control?

Contact DetailsAddress: Grosvenor House, Grosvenor Road, Whittlesey PE7 1AQ;

T : 01733 785214, W: www.whittlesey-osteopaths.com, E: [email protected]

Does nature determine who we are or can we change it by how we interact with our environment? That is the question we shall endeavour to answer this month.

Let us start by defining nature and nurture. Nature refers to our genes and their role in controlling how we are constructed. Nurture in its broadest sense represents how we (once constructed) interact with the environment around us and how the environment interacts with us. By environment we mean the space around us. It includes the climate, the objects within our proximity, the people or animals who share the space, the emotions generated within that space, the air, etc. So once constructed (nature), does the space we live in (nurture) influence the constructed self? To answer this, we must pose another question. Do we change physically on a day to day, month by month and year by year basis? Because if we don’t change then the environment is irrelevant. The answer is, we do change because we age. However you will be surprised to know that we are changing daily! Most of our cells are constantly dying or being broken down and replaced by new cells. So much so that in a month from now the vast majority of our cells will be different! Knowing this means, we can appreciate that a changing self has the potential to be influenced by its surrounding. Let us now take the example of something we consider ‘set in stone’, our skin colour. Given to us at birth by our genes which originated from our parents. Yet when we go on holiday (i.e. interacting with a sunnier environment, nurture) our skin colour changes! Take another example of a person with a short temper. Nature wired their nervous system in a certain way that a small stimulus causes a larger release of a chemical which results in anger. Yet that person can learn to control their temper provided the environment is right. Somebody may have a predisposition for high cholesterol but by eating and living in a certain way they may never have a heart attack or any form of vascular problems. In fact, I challenge you to think of anything within us that is independent of our interaction with the environment. So how does nature and nurture interact, well here is the science bit. Nature as we stated early, represents our genes. Genes are blocks of DNA which hold the blueprints to our construct. These blueprints are under lock and key in the centre of the cell. The only special proteins can read the blueprint, let’s call them the architects. These architects roam around the cell but are constantly in touch with the outside world. They do this by reading the reports created by the sensory receptors on the outer aspect of the cell. They do this because they want to ensure that what they are making is fit for the environment in which it has to function. So the architects will take the sensory reports with them when they read the blueprint. They will then interrupt the information on the blueprint based on their understanding of the sensory reports before passing on their instructions to the proteins that perform the construction, i.e. the builders. Therefore, depending on what is happening outside the cell will determine how they read the blueprint and therefore what is created. Using this analogy in today’s housing industry. The materials used to build a house are bricks, mortar etc... The manner in which the houses are built are very similar i.e. bricks or stone alternatively stacked against each other, a timber construction for the internal parts etc... Yet all the houses are not the same along the street. This is because the architect has interpreted the blueprints differently and the construction company (as well as the owner) has asked for different things. Each house is built within a different environment but from the same basic blueprint. The same is true with our cells. This concept is very important because we think that all aspects of ourselves are predetermined by our genes. Yet the reality is very different. We have the power to modify that expression. We have a significant say in who we are. Enjoy the spring and we shall expand on this subject next month. Take care.

Coloured bowls at Whittlesey Indoor Bowls Club

DISABLED bowlers at the Whittlesey Indoor Bowls Club now have coloured bowls to brighten up their weekly sessions. Several sets of coloured bowls have been made available to the bowlers as a result of support from Taylor Bowls, the Glasgow-based bowls manufacturer, and the local Whittlesey Town Council. Whittlesey Mayor and Mayoress, David and Ann Mason, joined the bowlers and volunteer helpers from the club at the official handover of the bowls. The group in Whittlesey is part of the Fens Disabled Bowls Association, which also incorporates disabled sections at the Wisbech and March indoor clubs. Each club hosts a gala day every year, and there is also an annual championship. It is hoped the coloured bowls will prove

beneficial to the disabled bowlers, and especially to those with visual problems.

Junior Netball Club updateOur junior section of our netball club has been steadily growing in numbers since we set up in June 2013. We now have 31 girls regulary attending training sessions on a Tuesday evening on the tennis courts behind Sir Harry Smith College. This year we have also been able to enter three teams into the Wisbech Youth League, who play on a Sunday morning from March to July 2015. You can follow our successes through our facebook page - Whittlesey Warriors Netball Club.

We would like to thank all the girls that attend our club for all their co-operation and willingness to learn; all the parents for their support with the girls bringing them to training sessions and also attend match fixtures. A big thank you to Ady from Hereward Teamwear and Trophies, for his continued help with our clothing and equipment requirements, and also Maria and Peppe from Vesuvio Restaurant who continue to offer us some sponsorship with our Junior Section. Maria and Peppe from Vesuvio's recently invited our junior section to have a meal at their restaurant, and on behalf of all the girls and coaches that attended, we would like to say: "Thank you very much for inviting us, a brilliant meal/evening was had by all.” Whittlesey Junior Warriors Netball Club has become one of the largest junior sports club for girls in this area, you should be proud of them all representing Whittlesey.......we are!

Rabbits are much more intelligent than we think; they play together and with humans, and some have even been taught to do tricks. This tells us that they need stimulation in their environment, especially if they don’t have the company of another rabbit. Rabbits are very active and need plenty of space to run about, chase each other, dig and forage for food. Rabbits, (you may have noticed if you own one) like to “go to the bathroom” in a particular place. This should be kept clean and any waste should be removed daily. Flies are attracted to smelly areas and if rabbits have mucky bottoms or fur, flies can lay their eggs and very quickly rabbits can become victims of fly strike. Fly strike, if not caught early, is deadly. The housing which rabbits are in should be safe and secure, away from predators. Most hutches you can buy now have fox-proof wire that can save them from being a potential meal. Rabbit hutches should be regularly checked for gaps where rain can get in, making the bedding, and your bunnies, wet. The hutch must be well ventilated so that, on hot days, the rabbits can stay cool. Rabbits need lots of bedding to keep snuggly and make them feel safe, and there are all kinds of bedding that you can use. Try to find the one one that suits you and your bunnies. It’s best to have bedding that is safe for them to eat because rabbits generally graze on everything. Rabbit teeth grow continuously throughout their lives, and grazing generally keeps their teeth the correct length. The teeth grind against each other whilst eating; this is why it’s important to feed your rabbits the correct food. A good quality

hay is essential, and rabbits need to graze on this continuously. This should make up the majority of your rabbit’s diet. The hay should be dust-free and is best in a hanging rack, so that it’s kept off the floor. Rabbits can also be given leafy vegetables and a variety is always good; you can feed kale, broccoli, and cabbage. Apples and carrots can also be given, but they are recommended in much smaller quantities, because of their sugar content. It is recommended to feed pellet-type food to your rabbits because all the necessary nutrients are in each pellet, whereas, with the muesli type, rabbits can pick out the best tasting stuff and generally leave the healthier portion behind.Where possible, rabbits are best not purchased alone. They are happiest in company. We can’t always be the twenty-four hour companion rabbits need, and rabbits can be unhappy living in solitude. Rabbits that have always lived alone however, can be tricky to introduce to new friends, and sometimes are best left alone. In these cases, you will need to provide lots of extra things for your bunny to do, to keep them busy and active. There are lots of toys that you can purchase from shops, or you can simply make your own, using cardboard boxes, shredded paper and tunnels. You can hide food in these so that the rabbit can search for a reward; this keeps rabbits’ minds and bodies active. If you have any questions about rabbits or rabbit health, you can call one of our staff members at Whittlesey Veterinary Centre and we will be happy to answer any questions.

Whittlesey in BloomAfter a very dry winter we did get some rain at the end of March, and April came in fiercely with some very strong winds. Up until then, the ground had become very dry and it was necessary to give a drink to the pansies at the Manor entrance. The old saying of March coming in like a lion and going out like a lamb was certainly wrong this year! In mid-March, a group of the 2nd Whittlesey Brownies, with their leader Pippa Rodham, and assistants, came along to The Pound and planted a standard rose, aptly named “Remember Me”, to remember brownies throughout the world. We are looking forward to this beautiful orange/rust coloured rose coming into flower. The picture shows three brownies, with our “In Bloom” Secretary, Gill Lawrence. Unfortunately, for a few days during the high winds, it was necessary to keep the Pound closed to ensure that the gate didn’t get damaged; the centre bed is coming along nicely and the wallflowers and tulips are beginning to show colour as I write. The Friends of the Cemetery are still keeping busy and on Saturday April 11th, members of Streetpride went along to assist in the project, for which we are very grateful. We also extend our thanks to the Community Pay Back team who assist in the cemetery on a regular basis. Sandra Lawton continues to research the history and display information about people interred within the cemetery on the “Friends” notice board. We are still awaiting the installation of the new seat in the cemetery, hopefully not for too much longer. The rules and regulations (do’s and don’ts) of the cemetery that are given to families when a new plot is purchased are also displayed

on the FDC notice board at the entrance. If you have any questions or queries, please contact Fenland District Council on 01354 654321. We have been advised that “Anglia in Bloom” has decided to make a special award to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the end of World War II. How lucky is that? We had already decided to use that theme for the Manor beds this year. Who knows, we may be in with a chance! The “Anglia in Bloom” judging will take place during the fortnight commencing Monday July 6th ; we are still working out the judging route for this year and as soon as we have this agreed, it will be announced in “Discovering Whittlesea”. Hopefully, everyone along the route will help to ensure we are spic and span on our judging day. Thanks for your support.

If you would like to help our town/environment and make new like-minded friends, everyone is welcome.

Hello again from the Whittlesey in Bloom team

March has come along and the sun is shining; there is a cold wind but we are now able to get out into our gardens and do some tidying up and enjoy the snowdrops, crocus and daffodils. Spring has definitely sprung.

The Pound is now open once again and we hope that you will drop in as you pass and see what a transformation has taken place. We were successful in obtaining a grant from the Glassmoor Wind Turbine Fund to enable an Interpretation Board to be installed and we hope it will not be too long

before you can read all about the history of The Pound on site.

The Friends of the Cemetery are busy keeping the grounds spick and span and Fenland Council has agreed to place one of the triple tiered planters inside the gates to help brighten the entrance.

The summer project for the Manor entrance Flower beds was discussed at the meeting at the beginning of March and it was agreed that the 70th anniversary of VE day would be the theme for 2015. Discussions have taken place with the nursery and the plants have been ordered.

The plants for the barrier planters – to be at the Queen Street/Market Street and High Causeway/Eastgate junctions - have also been ordered. This will be the first year that we have had these and we are sure they will help brighten up our Town Centre.

Some residents are under the misconception that Whittlesey in Bloom is funded by the Council – this is not the case; all the plants have to be bought and the only way this can be achieved is through grants and fund raising. Our time is given freely.

Funding: We have once again been very fortunate to receive a significant donation from the Whittlesea Charities; this will enable us to continue for another year. We will also be fund raising ourselves. During the month of July we will be out and about with collecting buckets for donations. Our 2015 theme will be A Penny to a Pound to brighten your Town; as little or as much as you can afford will be gratefully received. We are hoping that some of our businesses will also assist with this project and have collecting boxes.

Those of us that form the Whittlesey in Bloom group are dedicated volunteers but more bodies are needed along with the finance to ensure that we can continue. If you can spare an hour or so occasionally please get in touch – many hands make light work.

Thank you for your support

I f you would l ike to help our Town/Environment and make new like-minded friends, everyone is welcome

“Mayday, Mayday, Mayday”What’s That All About Then?

“Not very much to do with the month of May”, is the short answer! “Mayday” is an “emergency procedure word”, used internationally as a distress signal in voice procedure radio communications.

It is used to signal a life-threatening emergency primarily by mariners and aviators, but in some countries, local organizations such as police forces, firefighters, and transportation organizations also use the term. The call is always given three times in a row (“Mayday Mayday Mayday”) to prevent mistaking it for some similar-sounding phrase under noisy conditions, and to distinguish an actual Mayday call from a message about a Mayday call. The Mayday procedure word originated in 1923, when a senior radio officer, Frederick Stanley Mockford, at Croydon Airport in London, was

asked to think of a word that would indicate distress and would easily be understood by all pilots and ground staff in an emergency. Since much of the traffic at the time was between Croydon and Le Bourget Airport in Paris, he proposed the word “Mayday”, from the French “M’aidez!” which translates to “Help me!” Before the voice call “Mayday”, SOS was the Morse code equivalent of the Mayday call. In 1927, the International Radiotelegraph Convention of Washington adopted the voice call Mayday in place of the SOS Morse Code call.

WHITTLESEY WI Laurence Seaton, of Buttercross Auctions, gave an interesting and amusing talk at the April meeting. Then members were invited to examine various items, to test their knowledge of antiques and collectables; it was great fun. This year, the National W.I. is one hundred years old and, to mark the occasion, there is to be a Garden Party held at Buckingham Palace on June 2nd, hosted by the Duchess of Cornwall. One lucky member from each institute

has been chosen to attend and a secret ballot was held at the March meeting. Ginny Lindsey was chosen to represent our institute. The May meeting is on Tuesday, May 5th at 7:30pm in St Andrew’s Church Hall. It is “Members’ Night”, when members organise the entertainment, and is usually a fun night! New members are most welcome. Contact Ginny on 01733 205148.

Whittlesey Festival Plans Well Under WayIt hardly seems believable that we are almost half way through the year already, which means that plans for this year’s Festival are well under way. Now in its eighth year, the Festival will be held on Sunday September 6th, so remember to keep that date free in your diaries – you won’t want to miss it. Year on year, we’ve seen it go from strength to strength, now attracting over 8,000 people from far and wide. There is truly something for everyone with numerous stalls and attractions. Those of you that have been to the Festival before will know that we like to feature the Peterborough Highland Band as part of our extensive programme. New this year, we are delighted to announce that we will also feature The Haverettes All Girl Marching Band. (You can read the articles about the Festival in Discovering Whittlesey over the coming months to find out more about this spectacular display.) The ever-popular vintage car display increases each year with well over 100 vehicles and motorcycles along Market Street and Broad Street, so you can truly take a walk back in time. Children can enjoy a whole host of amusements and activities, some of which are free, including rides, climbing walls, and free face painting and puppet shows available at the Whittlesey Christian Church marquee on the day. The Market Square and surrounding areas will be a hive of activity with a variety of dance displays and music. See the fantastic local Schools Art Exhibition at the Whittlesey Christian Church throughout the day. The Festival gets off to a colourful and exciting start with a Parade from Broad Street, finishing at the Market Square to celebrate the opening. We know we can count on you to offer

your support by lining the streets to create an amazing Carnival atmosphere. The Festival Steering and Partners Groups, who are the team behind organising the event, recently said goodbye to Pauline Edge who has chaired the groups up until now. New Chairman, Brian Smithyman said, ‘’On behalf of everyone, we would like to thank Pauline for her amazing hard work over the last seven years which has contributed to making the Festival the success that it is today; she will be greatly missed. I am excited about my new role and look forward to building on that success to ensure Whittlesey continues to have a Festival to be proud of.’’ For more information about the Festival or to be involved in some way, please contact Brian Smithyman on 01733 752093 or Jenny Parker on 01733 351005.

On March 18th Chancellor George Osborne delivered his last budget before the general election. As a reminder here are some of the key points:Tax efficient savings:A new help to buy ISA, for every £200 the first time buyer saves there will be a £50 bonus payment up to a maximum of £3,000 on £12,000 of savings. The bonus will be available for purchases of homes in this area worth up to £250,000. The ISA limit will rise to £15,240 for the tax year 2015-16 so a couple can invest up to £30,480 in a tax-free plan. The starting rate of savings income will be significantly increased from 10% of the first £2,882 to 10% of the first £5000. Furthermore it is proposed that the first £1,000 worth of interest income for basic rate taxpayers will be zero on the first £1,000, this could spell the death knell of cash ISAs. A key benefit could be that existing cash ISA allowances may be better deployed in equity-based investments. Premium bonds offer tax free winnings, and it is anticipated that the maximum investment limit will rise to £50,000 on June 1st, 2015.Retirement planning:In addition to the new flexibility of certain pensions from April 6th, 2015, further initiative has been announced from April 2016 that those individuals already receiving income from a pension annuity may be able to sell that income to a third party. A number of things need to be sorted out in the meantime. Firstly, a market needs to be developed that will buy annuities, and then the proceeds of the sale can then be taken directly or drawn

down over a number of years and will be taxed at the individual’s marginal rate. From April 6th, 2016 the lifetime allowance for pensions will be reduced from £1.25 million to £1 million, if this might affect you speak with an independent financial adviser because, certain actions may be taken in time to protect your retirement plans.Capital gains tax:If you are a higher or additional rate taxpayer you will pay 28% on all capital gains above your annual exemption of £11,000. If your spouse or civil partner is a basic rate taxpayer, they only pay 18% on gains above their annual exemption. Good financial planning will maximise the use of the lowest tax rate. Entrepreneurs’ relief has been amended but it is still a valuable way to release equity from a business.Other points:Your personal allowance will increase to £10,600 in 2015/2016 to £10,800 in 2016/2017 and £11,000 the following year. The government proposes to abolish the self-employed class 2 N.I. contributions sometime in the next Parliament. Self-employed farmers will be able to average their profits over five years instead of just two from April 2016. There is also much more and if you are keen to establish the impact on your circumstances, please contact me for a no fee initial meeting..If you have financial concerns and you are looking for some advice, why not have an initial consultation at no cost to you by arranging a meeting with me? Tax planning is not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Tax treatment varies according to individual circumstances and is subject to change..

Family problems with Social services (care proceedings)

Bringing children up can be difficult, and some times the problems which are encountered can get out of control and social services become involved.

This does not always mean that your children will be removed from your care. Social services are under an obligation to work with families to try and resolve problems, and removing children from parents is a last resort.

This can be a frightening experience and it is important to take advice from a children’s panel solicitor at the earliest opportunity.

The most common reason for social services taking concerns about your children to court is because parents do not cooperate with them to try and resolve the problems. Taking early legal advice means that you know where you stand from the start and can be advised on the best course of action to take to solve the problem.

Sometimes it is not possible to resolve the problems, social services must provide you with notice that they are considering issuing care proceedings. They will send you a (Public Law Outline) PLO letter inviting you to attend a

meeting with your solicitor. You must take this letter seriously, failure to do so will result in the matter being placed before the court.

If social services take the matter to court, you have the right to challenge what they are saying however it is vital that you obtain the correct advice. Changes in the law mean that care proceedings must be concluded within 26 weeks, therefore if you do not act quickly; it can often be too late.

Free Legal Aid is available for all areas of law dealing with social services.

The Theory of Everything is a 2014 British, biographical, coming-of-age, romantic drama film, directed by James Marsh and adapted by Anthony McCarten, from the memoir, “Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen”, by Jane Wilde Hawking. The film deals with her relationship with her ex-husband, theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, his diagnosis of motor neurone disease, and his success in physics. The film stars Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones, with Charlie Cox, Emily Watson, Simon McBurney, Christian McKay and David Thewlis featured in supporting roles. Cambridge University astrophysics student Stephen Hawking (Redmayne) begins a relationship with literature student Jane Wilde (Jones). Although Stephen excels at mathematics and physics, his friends and professors are concerned over his lack of a thesis topic. After Stephen and his professor, Dennis Sciama (Thewlis) attend a lecture on black holes, Stephen speculates that black holes may have been part of the creation of the universe and decides to write his thesis on time. Whilst pursuing his research, Stephen’s

Donations of wool wanted

A local lady, Heather, is looking for any donations of wool for machine and hand knitting, for charity work.

Please call 01733 558408 if you have anything suitable, and Heather will be happy to collect.

The “Peterborough Sings!” ambitious “Big Names” concert series has put the Broadway Theatre firmly back at the centre of the city’s cultural scene, bringing a diverse mix of internationally renowned musicians to work and perform with Peterborough Male Voice Choir, Peterborough Voices and Peterborough Youth Choir during their highly successful residency. The choirs are delighted to be welcoming the double Grammy-Award winning King’s Singers to perform with them at the Broadway Theatre on the evening of Saturday 30th May. Instantly recognisable for their immaculate intonation, impeccable vocal blend, flawless diction and incisive timing, the King’s Singers are a global phenomenon! Their work represents the very best in vocal ensemble performance and appeals to a vast international audience. The King’s Singers are at the Broadway Theatre at 7.30pm on Saturday 30th May. Tickets are £12 and available at Peterborough Visitor Information Centre, by phone on 0333 666 3366 or online at www.peterboroughmvchoir.org.uk.
