WHAT IS YOUR STATUS?

STATUSPHERE | As consumers are starting to recognize and respect fellow consumers who stray off the beaten consuming-more-than-thou-path, ‘new’ status can be about acquired skills, about eco-credentials, about generosity, about connectivity... All of this makes for a far more diversified ‘STATUSPHERE’ than most brands and organizations have traditionally catered to. Time to really figure out how and where your customers are now finding their status fix.

HOW ARE TRANSACTIONS EVOLVING?“Many virtual worlds have a large, overarching economy, based on market econo-my principles.”

“Secondlife currency Linden is being traded at an “official” exchange rate of 250 Lindens to 1 US Dollar. Donations of 20, 50, 100, or even 250 Lindens are com-mon, but with the exchange rate of around 250 Lindens to one U.S. dollar, 20 Lin-dens equals about $0.08 and 100 equals about $0.40.”

In 2009 the Second Life economy, despite the hiatus in the world economy, rose 65 percent against the previous year to $US567 million while gross resi-dent earnings recorded 11 percent growth to $US55 million, mainly through user-created, services, merchandise, and virtual goods.

HOW ARE TRANSACTIONS EVOLVING?

Despite a staunch position against non-company-sanctioned real-money trading (RMT), or the exchange of “real” money for virtual goods and services, Blizzard Entertainment has recently introduced new features of World of Warcraft that have opened the door to the sale of the company’s own virtual goods.

Development in Value of online User-to-User transaction:o 2007: $US333 mil. o 2008: $US 344 mil.o 2009: $US 567 mil.
