Jack Attack What do you do when a kangaroo takes off with $50,000 of your money? You chase him, that's what!

In Kangaroo Jack, two guys from New York get mixed up in a scam delivering cash to Australia. The trouble really starts when the guys lose the money by putting a coat (with the money in it) on a kangaroo!

We talked to star Jerry O'Connell about his Aussie adventure.

Kangaroo Jack star Jerry O’Connell goes

Down Under for crazy kangaroo action.

, jerry with "Jack" and Anthony Anderson.

Q: What was it like working with kangaroos, dingoes and camels? A: I'm from New York City, so I had only seen so many animals at one time in the

[city's] Central Park Zoo. Every day we were on set it seemed that a

new animal showed up—ones

had never sven heard of. What's a dingo? They looked like scraggly dogs to me!

Q: In your search for the kangaroo, you ride a camel across the desert. Did you make friends? A: I loved my camel. Baby. I wanted to bring her back to the States with me, but I couldn't fit her on the plane.

The wild kingdom is swingin'

again! Human boy Mowgli and his

bearish friend Baloo first met in the

p movie The Jungle Book. In the sequel,

L they make a jungle-full of new friends

(and have to decide if it's better to live

in the jungle or in a village with other

humans—tough decision!).

Turn the page for behind-the-

scenes secrets about both movies—

and get ready to get wild, man.

Page 35: Disney Adventures Volume 13 Issue 1 - archive.org
Page 36: Disney Adventures Volume 13 Issue 1 - archive.org

Haven’t seen The Jungle Book (the first movie) yet? Never fear! Here’s the story so far:

m Bagheera the black panther finds an abandoned human baby and leaves him with a wolf family to raise. When the animals learn that the man-hating tiger, Shere Khan, has returned, they decide

k,.that Bagheera must take the boy, l Mowgli, back to the human village

so he'll be safe.

Fllll Fact: Originally released in

October 1967, The Jungle Book was the last animated movie to be supervised by Walt Disney.

Mowgli go to sleep. The python Kaa

I* hypnotizes Mowgli so he can— '’gulp!—eat him. But Bagheera saves

Mowgli just in time.

FttlfFaet: Sterling Holloway-

for years the voice of Pooh in the Winnie the Pooh movies—gave Kaa his sinister hiss.

W When

Mowgli again refuses to go to the village, Bagheera

leaves him on his own. Mowgli meets Baloo, a carefree "jungle bum."

32 Dtsfi'ey Adventures

Fin Fact: Originally, Baloo w supposed to be a tiny role. But the animators loved the way voice actor Phil Harris gave life to the character, so Baloo became one of the movie's stars—and most popular characters!

Page 37: Disney Adventures Volume 13 Issue 1 - archive.org

- including fun movie facts!

Mowgli is kidnapped by a band of monkeys and taken to be-boppin' orangutan King Louie.

Fun Fact: In the "I Wanna Be

f 1 Like You" song scene, a wild- f haired monkey steals Louie's

spotlight. He didn't have a name in the movie, but insiders called

I him 'flunky monkey.'

Later, Mowgli hears Bagheera and Baloo talking about taking him to the village. Thinking Baloo has

betrayed him, Mowgli runs away.

Fun Fact: The Jungle Book was

the first Disney movie in which major characters were drawn to resemble the voice actors. For example, King Louie has the moves of jazz musician Louis Prima, who voiced him,

vultures' hangout, where four scruffy birds promise they'll be his friends. But when the villain Shere Khan shows up, they scatter. Baloo arrives and saves Mowgli.

Fttlt Fact: The smart-talking

vultures with mop top hair and British accents were created to sound a lot like John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr of The Beatles.

JCMowgli wants to stay in the jungle—until he sees a young girl at the river fetching water. She drops her bucket so he'll pick it up. \ The love-struck Mowgli then follows her back to the village.

Fun Fact: Who is the hardest Jungle Book character to draw? The girl at the river! Animators say females are the toughest characters to keep looking attractive in frame i

, after frame of a movie.

L..——-—3^

iry 2003 33

Page 38: Disney Adventures Volume 13 Issue 1 - archive.org

The Jungle Book 2 starts right where The Jungle Book ended....

M Shanti, the girl Mowgli met at the river, is now his ll best friend. Mowgli lives with ll his "adopted" family: the 11 village leader, his wife and their V little boy, Ranjan. After Mowgli I tells the village kids about his I exciting life with Baloo, the kids ! follow him toward the edge of the forest (even though they've been warned to stay away from

the jungle).

Fim Fact: The movie originally

included a huge food fight among the village kids, but the scene was cut when the movie ran long (maybe it'll show up on the DVD!).

Mad Mowgli gets into trouble

for leading the kids toward the jungle, so he sits in his room, bummed. Meanwhile, Baloo sneaks into the village to visit Mowgli, who decides to escape back to the jungle. Shanti spots

I s>them as they make their getaway m and follows because she thinks u Mowgli has been nabbed by a

I hungry boa.

® Fun Fact: Actor John Goodman

(the voice of Sulley in Monsters, ( Inc.) is the new voice of Baloo.

Disney Adventui

.JK. Here comes double trouble!

First, Kaa tells Shere Khan that Mowgli is nearby—then the hi villagers invade the jungle, IS looking for Mowgli! Baloo 11 takes Mowgli to hide out in the 11 ruins—now a jungle hot spot. 11 Baloo hops on stage to sing a 11 new song, "Wild." 1

Fttn Fact: Originally, Baloo 1 was supposed to sing "Jungle | Rhythm" at the ruins. But the creators moved that song to the scene where Mowgli tells the kids

about living in the jungle.

Shanti runs into Kaa. But just as she's about to be munched, pow! Little Ranjan, who's followed her into the jungle, whacks Kaa with a stick - over and over again. Kaa ends up at the bottom of a hill with mangoes falling on his head.

Fun Fact: Inside joke alert! When Kaa gets pounded with fruit, he pops up with two large mangoes on top of his head. The result? He looks like a certain famous mouse.

^ Shanti i Shanti and Ranjan finally track down Mowgli, but Shanti is hurt when she learns Mowgli didn't want her to find him. She and Ranjan run away, and Mowgli chases after them. But when he finds them, he also finds Shere Khan. Mowgli and Shere Khan face off at an ancient coliseum in a big final showdown.

Fun Fact: Animators say that,

like Tarzan, Mowgli is tough to draw because he doesn't wear many clothes, which can cover

drawing mistakes.

Pluril Lauigne We caught up with Avril to talk about her four awards:

CLi What does it feel like to win in four categories?

I sing karaoke.,

PI sing country songs.

Dinie Chicks." m

0l> Why do you think "Complicated" is such a popular song?

Rurlli I guess because it's a song that a lot of people can relate to. It talks about that guy who's really cool around you but then when he's off around his friends he treats you like a different person.

It's about people being two-faced and talking behind your back. And it's a catchy song—but mainlty I think it's very easy to relate to.

CLi What songs did you do homework to?

Fiurili I didn't listen to music when I did my homework because I wouldn't be able to concentrate.

Q: What was your worst homework subject?

Oli What was your best "homework not finished" excuse?

Flurili I would say to my teacher that I was too busy doing homework in my other subjects. And that I didn't have enough time. But of course it

wasn't true!

Lineup Lowdown How many players lace up for an NBA team? We Counted! By Devin Gordon

Dear ESPN Action, In the NBA, how

many players (total) are allowed on each team? Jason L., 10 Calabasas, CA

Dear Jason, During the regular season and the playoffs, a team can keep 12 active players on its roster (with up to three on the injured list), but only five players can be on the court at once.
