I was a bit hesitant about directing Disney’s The Little Mermaid for MAPA this summer for a few reasons. The first being that I am typically drawn to plays that have a bit more complexity, more obvious life lessons for both the student performers and our devoted audience. Also I was aware of the popularity of the movie (my own daughter had it practically memorized) and I worried that my production wouldn’t satisfy the Disney fans who might fixate on how this production was not at all like the movie.  But I jumped into the water and began working on this piece with 71 actors and a team of caring, creative teachers. As we worked, we discovered that the same issues that plague Ariel, Prince Eric, and Triton, King of the Sea are the very challenges that we face as we try to navigate our journey through life. Ariel feels that she was born into the wrong world, the wrong body. She yearns for something that seems beyond her reach. Prince Eric is caught in a world of pretense and social decorum, all the while wishing to be a sailor. King Triton nearly loses his youngest child because he stubbornly refuses to accept the truth about her desire to leave him and join the “land creatures.” These vigorous, creative, delightful actors have been cheerful participants in the work of putting on this play. They have spent hours in a warehouse, dancing and singing until they are exhausted, as they wait for their moment to enter the stage and help to tell the story of The Little Mermaid. We have all had tearful, frustrating, exhilarating moments as we witness the growth of these artists as they stretch and grow into more confident performers. I will never forget the look of satisfaction on one of our 8 year olds as she walked off the stage after dancing a vigorous version of “Under the Sea.” Then we have the brave 9 year old who has never taken a dance class, yet brings such life to his character as he remembers his steps in “Positoovity.” (By the way he is doing these steps while he is also convincing us that he is a sea gull.) The lessons from this story are many. But the one that made the most lasting impression on me is this idea that comes from our favorite crab, Sebastian.
