MEMO FROM THE BOARD~
Our annual Craft Sale was a successful, fun
day on October 7th. We had a full house of
Crafters selling a wonderful variety of quality
crafts! Each year as I watch the crafters open
their totes and set up their tables, I am awed by
their talents, skills and creativity.
Thank you to our crafters, members, family
and friends for all you do to make the day go
so well.
Did you know this was our 22nd Annual Craft
Sale at the same location? Prior to 1995 we
held an annual “Holiday Fair” at various
locations. In those years members and clubs
displayed their own crafts made during the
year. We chose a theme for decorating our
tables. Some themes I recall were the 12 Days
of Christmas, Candyland, etc. We did not sell
crafts. Printed instructions were handed out,
and folks watched how-to demonstrations.
In the early years we did
not have a lunch or bake
sale. Fancy cookies, coffee
and punch were served by
members from the “Tea
Table” elegantly appointed
with a silver coffee service,
punch bowl, and fine china
platters.
People asked us time and again to purchase our
displayed handiwork. That sparked an idea and
the Craft Sale was born. We began with a
handful of crafters. More and more people
asked to sell their crafts at our sale. We
outgrew the National Guard Armory, (our sale
was there for several years), and moved to the
fairgrounds. Talk about a success!

CRAFT SALE REVIEW AND THANK YOU
Congratulations to our Douglas County HCE
members for another very successful Craft Sale.
Your hard work and devotion to the success of
the Craft Sale was apparent in all areas. All
clubs and members working together made this
day a huge success.
The lunch was delicious and thanks to Ginger
LaPorte for her expertise in making Walking
Tacos they were a hit. Did you notice the clown,
our own walking taco, Marion Bradley? The
bake sale had a steady stream of customers.
Admission receipts showed that we had a larger
attendance than the previous year. Looking out
over the auditorium you could see the very busy crafters and it was a joy to watch the happy
shoppers leaving with their packages. We are fortunate to have such creative and talented
crafters.
Again, Linda Williams did a wonderful job of managing the crafters, letters, table rentals,
table set up, a HUGE job all the way to being there and opening the door for the crafters early
in the morning and locking the door after the last person left.
Thanks to Super One, East End, for their donation of doughnuts for the crafters early morning
coffee. Thanks to Diane Greely and Mary Ann Gronquist for setting up the early morning
coffee. Also, thanks to Peggy Moen for her donation of a fall arrangement to our door prize
table. Sue Hendrickson delivered the door prizes to three happy winners Monday after the
Craft Sale: Cindy Janousek, Duluth, won the fall basket; Amanda Fudally, South Range, won
the knitted items; Mary Jo Stupak, Superior, won the fall arrangement. Linda Williams
delivered the spa basket to Charles Everson, Superior, a relative of hers. Thanks to the clubs
for the nice prizes and for getting the Craft Sale posters out into the community along with
excellent publicity by Sue Hendrickson and Mary Ann Gronquist.
A final report of our proceeds will be presented at the November Annual Meeting. We are
always open to ideas, suggestions, comments, and criticisms regarding the craft sale. Please
direct them to Jo Mersnick 715-399-3002 or [email protected] before Nov. 1, so they
can be addressed in the presentation to the board for next year’s planning.

COFFEE WITH A COP IS COMING!
We have a great program lined up for us for the
HCE Annual Meeting, Tuesday, November 2, beginning at
12:30 pm at Fuller’s Restaurant in South End. Officer
Bonnie Beste will acquaint us with the “Coffee with a
Cop” program including a question and answer time after.
These are turbulent times and we need to support our law
enforcement folks however we can. Find out what YOU
can do to make our community a safer, more peaceful
place. As one of my favorite fictional female detectives
says, “I respect our peace officers; they are the only thing
standing between us and chaos!”
NOTE: Please help publicize this program by
putting up the poster elsewhere in this Dispatch. Coffee
will be available. If you want lunch, come at noon to
order. See you there!
Congratulations to MaryAnn Gronquist,
Bonnie Gronquist, Ann Parker, and Jeanette
Rantala who recently received awards for
long-time service to Wisconsin Bookworms™.
Rosie Perala, Hilltoppers, is reading in two
classes also. Thanks to them and all our
reading volunteers for “reading books to young children.”
Lerna Mae Wiese, State HCE Wisconsin Bookworms™
Coordinator. We have 11 readers in 12 HeadStart with 227
kids.
We acquired a bonanza of sewing thread from
Irene Hudacek Puchalla, Morgan Park, for our
quilting and Nicaragua projects. Irene did alterations
for Younkers for many years, but is downsizing in her
retirement! Thanks, Irene!
Got hunters among your family and friends?
Please remind them that deer can be taken to Hursh Meat
Processing, 10083 E Oak Rd, Poplar, WI, so it can be
processed for area food shelves. Call 715-364-6855 for
hours of operation.
Thanks to the members that have turned in their
raffle tickets and money. Mine are taken care of too.
Good to get that done before the holidays are upon us!
10 SIMPLE THINGS YOU CAN DO
TO HELP PROTECT THE EARTH
Put on a sweater. A cozy sweater or robe
will keep you warm so you don’t need to
turn up the furnace and burn extra fossil
fuels.
Put one foot in front of the other. Using fuel-
efficient cars is important, but we can save even
more fuel by simply driving less.
Go for seconds. Recycling isn’t just separating paper,
cans and bottles from the rest of the garbage, it can
mean using things a second, or third, time! Save
that nice padded envelope you got in the mail,
remove the stamps and labels and reuse!
Watch your waste. Items we throw away may
contaminate our soil and water. There are places to
properly dispose of oil, batteries, and mercury-
containing lightbulbs. Call your community
recycling coordinator for information. Printer ink
cartridges can be disposed of at the table outside
the Douglas County Extension Office in the Court
House.
Paper NOR Plastic. If we bring bags with us when
we shop we can cut down on the 350 bags the
average American uses each year and reduce the
presence of those flimsy plastic bags in our
environment—a danger to animals in our rivers,
lakes and streams.
BYOB. About 50 billion plastic water bottles were
purchased by Americans last year! Fill up a
reusable water bottle at home to bring with you.
Buy a filter if you don’t like the taste of your
water. It’s what many bottled water manufacturers
do anyway!
Flip ‘em off! In much of America we can’t even see
the stars because of electric lights. Light the room
you are in, but keep the rest dark. You will find it
soothing.
Get in touch with your roots. Plant a tree! It’s good
for the soil, the birds, the heating bill and the air
we breathe!
Get off. Catalogs are great when they are from
companies we like to order from; but if we call the
companies that send us unwanted ones, we can get
off their lists—and that’s an order!
Support groups that support our world. We can’t
belong to every group that works to protect our
world and its creatures (including us!), but we can
support them and their volunteers with our dollars
and our work. Pick a few…and give generously.
It’s an investment that will have effects long into
the future.
(Thank you to the World Wildlife Fund for the
inspiration for these comments.)

As I age I find myself repeating things my
Dad said while I was growing up. One of
his pearls inspired this
poem:
DON’T SCRATCH IT?
I woke up with an awful itch
One sad, unlucky day;
Where that devil came from
I really cannot say.
It itched me in the morning,
It bothered me at night,
It plagued me in the darkness,
And bugged me in the light.
I went on to the doctor
To get a blessed cure,
She said, “Where that thing came from
I really can’t be sure.”
She gave me some vile potions,
She gave me some huge pills,
She gave me some thick lotions,
Guaranteed to cure my ills.
But nothing made it go away,
Nor stopped its slow advance,
I suggested to the doctor
That she do a voo-doo dance.
I left the office drooping,
I lost my last small hope,
The itch and I were bonded,
My doctor was a dope!
When I got home, my father said,
“My wisdom you can borrow,
I s’pect you’ll find no cure today,
And prob’ly not tomorrow.”
“But there’s a bright side to this itch,
Great news! You cannot match it!
I cannot part you from your plague,
But it’ll feel so good to scratch it!”
~Sue Hendrickson
Lots of Creative Ideas!
Thanks to the dozen plus members that
contributed to the September program,
“Creative Ideas for Everyday Items.”
It was a great night of sharing and new
ideas. Special thanks to Marion Bradley
(see photo of Marion’s snacks) and Rosie
Perala for bringing snacks for coffee time!
I was thrilled to use the new-fangled
PowerPoint projector, and I learned how to
download a YouTube to my PowerPoint.
Learning is fun!
