TREATS
O ur very own Judi Smith did very well at
this summer's Orange County Fair. She won
First Place for her Cottage Grove quilt, Sec-
ond Place for a tote bag and an Honorable
Mention for a wall hanging.
One of Judi's UFO's for last year's challenge,
the quilt was an Arlene Stamper "swap-a-
block,‖ done in a guild workshop several years
ago. It was quilted by Cecilia Hosford.
If anyone has ever thought about entering a quilt in the fair, Judy can
give you some pointers!
Congratulations, Judi!

L ots of things going on in September. Please help !!!

asking for donations of everything children, 2-17 years of age (clothes, shoes, toys, games, lunch boxes, back

W asn’t Larene Smith a blast? Such a fun lady and her husband is such a
good sport. Her quilts were wonderful and her story was amazing. I know for my-
self, even after 20 plus years of quilting, I am NOT ready to design and make
quilts in less than a day. What a whirlwind she is.
For those of you fortunate enough to attend her workshop, we had a wonderful
time. She is a patient instructor. Even with some initial glitches in the cutting in-
structions, everyone got their quilts started and I have it on good authority that one
of us has the top already finished!
I want to thank all of you for your patience during our August meeting while we
went through the bylaws changes. Luckily we don’t have to do that very often. The
last time was about eight years ago.
So, on with the show. We are getting down to the wire for the Auction and Tea.
We still have pre-sale tickets available for $5; they will be $7 at the door. In addi-
tion to the auction items, we will have lots of opportunity baskets, a TV/DVD
Combo with many quilt-y DVD’s that will be raffled off and of course food!
Looking forward to the next meeting. Karen K. Stone should be marvelous. Her
quilts are spectacular.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
October 8th Auction & Tea
T he Auction and Tea is almost upon us. We will be having a meeting on September 1st at 13252 Garden
Grove Blvd., Garden G rove, in the Charlie Miller Hall. It’s an office complex and has lots of parking.. It will
start at 9:30 am. We want to make sure everyone is on the same page.
Justine Gentile will have the volunteer sheets available at the September meeting. We can always use more vol-
unteers. We still need items for the opportunity baskets. If you need any suggestions there is a list of baskets
that we will be putting together the first week of October. If you are so inclined, feel free to donate a complete
basket. They are always welcome. If you can’t bring them to the meeting, give me a call
and I can pick it up.
Linda Majer will be on hand to take your quilt donation at the meeting. This will be the last
meeting that you can turn in your quilts. If you need a little more time, you can deliver it
yourself to Linda Majer no later than October 1st. Don’t forget that we need a photo of
your donation along with the entry form. If you need help with the photo you can bring it to
the September meeting and we will make sure a photo gets taken.
We will also be needing food for the tea.
Looking forward to a wonderful event. Until next time, Keep on Quilting. ~ Bonnie Lippincott

T hank you all for your wonderful reception of the Wildflower Sampler made by Mary O'Driscoll. It's a
beautiful quilt someone will enjoy for a long time. As you know, it will be drawn at the September 2012 Race
for the Cure.
Pat Essington, Gayle Wayne, and Betty Winek made donations to our Race Team. Thanks Pam, Gayle,
and Betty!! To date, our Team has raised $240.
I had 2 incentive prizes today and the breast cancer ribbon apron was won by Carolyn Rhodes. A quilt book,
Sew with the Stars, was won by our guest Carol Roquet.
Soon Yoplait will be hitting the grocery stores with PINK lids. If you would be so kind as to collect them and
bring them to Guild, I'll be happy to mail them in. As always OC Komen will be the recipient of the dona-
tion. Remember, only Yoplait purchased in 2011 will count.
You all continue to amaze me with your commitment to the efforts put forth to support Susan G. Komen for
the cure.
My deepest thanks. ~ Barbara Purks

DESERT BLOOMS AT ORANGE GROVE
A ugust’s workshop with Larene Smith got an early start with Larene advising participants on color
choices. She took a vote at the general meeting to name the pattern and ―Orange Grove‖ won hands down.
How nice to have a pattern named after our Guild! Such wonderful combinations!! Sewing the blocks was
easier than many anticipated and once you have mastered the first block, the others come easier. Can’t wait to
see some finished products!
September will bring us Karen K. Stone and ―Cactus Flower." If you are taking this class you will be stitching
on paper foundations provided by the instructor. Bring fabrics in an array of colors and patterns that you like,
keeping in mind that contrast is important and bright colors make this block pop. Baby rick-rack and/or other
trims, invisible and/or decorative threads are also needed. Check your supply list for other necessities. So pack
your bags and be prepared to expand your piecing horizons!!
With the year of workshops winding down, the last two offerings will be: October-Curvy Bias Technique with
Lisa Coulombe; November- Machine Pieced Landscape with Sue Rasmussen. There is no workshop in De-
cember.
Stop by the workshop table and see photos of the projects. If the workshop is full, please put your name on the
wait list as life happens and openings appear. Supply lists and directions to the workshops are sent to enrolled
participants approximately 2-3 months before the class so you have plenty of time to gather your supplies.
Workshops are held at Westminster Village Club House, 5200 Blackpool. There is ample parking and the
venue is well lighted and spacious. Bring your lunch and snacks. A refrigerator and microwave are available.
Any questions? See us at the Workshop Table or contact us at:
Marie Blash: 714-775-8004; [email protected] ; Justine Gentile: 714-962-8447; [email protected].
Hope to see you at a workshop soon!

P remiering this September on
PBS stations, Why Quilts Matter:
History, Art & Politics. Check it
out at www.whyquiltsmatter.org.
This nine-part documentary series
focuses on why quilts are bigger
than you think, seen through the lenses of history, art,
and politics. For the quilter, collector or even casual
observer, each episode takes the viewer behind the
scenes and into new territory, exploring the centrality
of the quilt in American culture and revealing the un-
suspected size, breadth and depth of the current quilt
phenomenon.
You will need to check your local PBS station to see if
they have scheduled it. If not, please request it.

It’s BAAAACK!!!
T he UFO Challenge is returning to Orange Grove Quilters Guild. You can pick up your forms (take 2
copies!) at the September meeting. The forms will be due at the October meeting, along with your $10 en-
rollment. All the money will be returned to participants in the form of prizes. Generally the rules will be the
same as last time, but there are a couple of things you need to know.
First, when you fill out the form, list the quilt you need for Christmas or the quilt that will take the most time
as #1. Second, we’ll be working on #1 first, and it will be due in January. Of course, you can turn it in early
if you need it for Christmas. So, dig out your UFOs, and we’ll get going!

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER BLOCK OF THE MONTH
N ext month we will make scrappy half-square triangle blocks. Use a variety of light,
medium and dark fabrics to add sparkle to your squares.
1. Cut 8 different color fabrics into 5-inch squares. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of
4 of the squares (Diagram 1).
2. Place the right sides of the marked squares onto the right sides of the unmarked squares
(Diagram 2).
3. Sew 1/4-inch away from the drawn line on both sides. Cut on the drawn line to make 2
half-square triangles. Press seams open and trim blocks to 4 1/2 inches (Diagram 3).
4. Lay out 4 different half-square triangle units in 2 rows of 2 units each. Sew the units to-
gether in each row. Join rows to make an 8 1/2-inch block using the 8 different fabrics.
You should have two 8 1/2-inch blocks.
5. Make 2 to 20 blocks . Bring your completed, unquilted blocks to the August meeting. Put
your name in the container for each block you bring.
If you have questions, please call Donna Hovartos at 818-572-3958.
