Distance Learning Instructions Period 4 – Intro to Music Week 8 – May 25 th – 29 th The end if here!!! Congrats on surviving Distance Learning!!! How ridiculous this has all been. I’ve missed you all so much and I’m sorry our time was so short together. Thank you for doing your best every week. I know this has been extremely difficult and just know I’m here to support you, challenge you, and ultimately raise you up to be better than before I met you. I don’t teach just music. I teach logic, organization, responsibility, confidence, kindness, passion, and sometimes I teach life skills like how to jump start a car! You are more than what can be measured in a grade. You are a wonderful human being with feelings and goals and fears and dreams. As the year comes to an unceremonious end, I’d like to thank you for sticking with the distance learning packets. Thanks for learning how to access all these different websites from all your teachers. I’m so proud of many of you for reaching out when you were stuck and you needed help. I’m glad some of you had fun with the explorations of music genres. I’m sorry we didn’t get to do any instruments this year. I hope you found out you liked music in a genre that was either unknown or you thought you would hate. There is so much great music out there from many different eras and areas of the world. Don’t limit your listening. Sometimes I go from Green Day to Mozart to Enya to The Offspring. They all have their own set of varied qualities that add up to a great sound. Please remember that grades have a weird set of rules for the end of the semester. Basically, whatever grade you had at the quarter 3 progress report, you can only go down by one letter but you can go all the way up to an A. If that means you may be getting a D in a subject, you will receive a Pass. A pass will get you credits but won’t affect your GPA positively or negatively. If you got an F, you will receive a No Mark which means you didn’t earn the 5 credits for the semester that go towards your graduation unit count. If you are a senior, you have a slightly different set of rules because we don’t want to hold you back from graduating. None of your teachers ever want to give negative/low grades. When we can, we bump you up. Personally, I always round up a grade that is 89.5% or above up to an A-. I had teachers show me grace and patience and kindness and I will always pay that forward. Materials drop off / pick up: 1. I am looking at a drop off system where you can drive through the juicer pick up area and hand things through the window of your car. Band is in the same boat so Mr. Kumagai and I are coordinating together. We will send out a mass email and remind message when we have a set date/time. 2. BINDER PICK UP – I still have binders from the 3 rd quarter binder check. I’d love to give them back to you. If you don’t pick them up, I will most likely try to have a TA deliver it to you in the fall, assuming we are back on campus, or I will toss the papers and give the binder away to a needy student next year. 3. If you borrowed anything from me, you can return it at the same time.

I know this has been extremely difficult and just know I’m here to support you, challenge you, and ultimately raise you up to be better than before I met you. I don’t teach just music. Music Genres Worksheets & Listening Log Process: - This week’s genres are:

o #25 Alternative § Listening Log #25 Alternative

o #26 Early and Contemporary R&B § Listening Log #26 Early Contemporary R&B

o #27 Pop (Michael Jackson) § Listening Log #27 Pop (Michael Jackson)

- By now, you should be well versed in the instructions for the worksheet and listening logs. If you have any questions, please reference the previous week packets.

- I know there are three this week! I originally planned to put MJ on Week 9 but was told after my curriculum planning that Week 9 would only be for collecting and grading late work. In the spirit of fairness, I’ve made the last worksheet & listening log extra credit. I doubt anyone is reading this, but if you are, thanks! I appreciate you!

Notation Unit 3: Lesson 6-7 – Key Signatures

- First, a few things to keep in mind: o Note names should always be written in capital letters. o This is the most complex lesson, so please read all the lesson instructional pages and

watch the videos on the new website. o A time signature is a way of saying that there is a flat or sharp on a particular letter

name throughout an entire piece instead of writing it into every measure when that note is played. This cleans up the clutter of accidentals all over the score.

o A key signature can have flats or sharps but not both at the same time. o Key Signatures always add the flats or sharps in the same order.

§ A Flat Key Signature will always add flats starting with Bb, then adding Eb, then Ab etc until you have the complete seven letter set: Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Cb, Fb.

§ A Sharp Key Signature will always add sharps starting with F#, then adding C#, then G# etc until you have the complete seven letter set: F#, C#, G#, D#, A#, E#, B#.

§ You might notice that these note names are reversed when you look at flat versus sharp key signatures. A great way to remember them is with an acronym:

• Flats: Battle Ends And Down Goes Charles’ Father (sad ending) • Sharps: Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle (happy ending)

o Pay attention to which clef you are looking at. o Also, notice which line or space the key signature sharps or flats are supposed to be

on. There is a correct line or space to use. Don’t put key signature symbols on ledger lines.

- There are several instructional videos on the new website. Please watch them and read through the lesson pages and take notes. If you get stuck, please reach out for help. Here are the video links if you want to type it:

Early R&B to Contemporary R&B By Chris Pearce

Rhythm and Blues, or R&B, is a style of music that came out of jazz, blues, and gospel music that was being played by African Americans in the 1930s and 1940s. Over the years, the term has commonly been used to describe whatever popular music this community was playing at the time. Initially, African American R&B bands took Caucasian songs by New York’s Tin Pan Alley writers and revved them up. This more upbeat, exciting type of music caught on in a big way, and for the first time, African Americans had their own style of commercial music.

It was often called jump blues, or blues and rhythm. As the swing era came to an end in the late 1930s, many big bands broke up into smaller units and formed “jump blues” bands which played loud music with a strong dance beat, quickly becoming popular in the dance halls at the time. A typical band had a rhythm section provided by drums and a bass guitar, and sometimes a piano. There would also be a couple of brass horn instruments. A featured soloist was often a saxophone player from a jazz background.

Early R&B bands were those of Count Baisie, Louis Jordan, and Lionel Hampton. Baisie had a hit in 1937 with “One O’clock Jump”, while Jordan had a string of hits from the late 1930s through the 1940s. By the mid-1950s, “R.M. Blues” by Roy Milton and “The Honeydripper” by Joe Liggin each sold one million copies. Jordan’s “Choo Choo Ch’Boogie” was a landmark multi-million seller that topped the R&B charts for 18 weeks in 1946. Other hits included “Good Rockin’ Tonight” by Roy Brown in 1947, “The Hucklebuck” by various artists, and “The Shufflebuck” by Jimmy Liggins in 1950.

R&B has remained a popular genre that changes through the decades with the influences of other genres. The 1990s had a resurgence of R&B on the pop charts with a new genre name, Contemporary R&B. This combined elements of rhythm and blues, pop, soul, funk, hip hop, and electronic music. The genre features a distinct record production style, drum machine backed rhythms, lots of pitch corrected vocals, an occasional saxophone-laced beat to give a jazz feel and a smooth, lush style of vocal arrangement.

Electronic influences became an increasing trend and the use of hip hop or dance inspired beats were typical, although the roughness and grit inherent in hip hop may have been reduced or smoothed out. A new technology called Auto Tune allowed audio engineers and producers in the recording studios to edit the vocalist’s recording by altering the frequency of the sound to correct wrong notes or singing slightly out of tune.

Contemporary R&B vocalists are often known for their use of melisma (vocal ornamentation), popularized by vocalists such as Michael Jackson, R. Kelly, Craig David, Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey. Vocal ornamentation happens when you add extra pitches in a very quick rhythm around the standard note that is built into the melody. A Riff is another kind of vocal ornament, as is a Run.
