The objective of this course is for teachers to gain knowledge and understanding of the continuum of early learning and development in order to design effective educational experiences for Dual Language Learners in Early Childhood and Transitional Kindergarten contexts. Participants will design instructional units and lesson plans, and learn and develop approaches that promote comprehensive school readiness using the modified curricular approach outlined in the Transitional Kindergarten legislative mandates. Teachers will expand their expertise in how to support TK/ECE students’ learning through implementation of developmentally appropriate instructional strategies that build on students’ interests and experiences, nurture social-emotional development, promote oral language growth, and build language, literacy and comprehension skills.

The objective of this course is for teachers to develop an action plan for strengthening positive family and community engagement programs that build meaningful partnerships with Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Early Childhood Education (ECE) families and communities. This course emphasizes the role of family engagement in impacting and promoting school readiness. As a result of this course, teachers will learn about and implement innovative approaches for working with parents from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to support and enhance research-based programs for TK/ECE students.

The objective of this course is for teachers to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to meaningfully observe and document Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Early Childhood Education (ECE) students’ learning and development throughout the academic year. Teachers will learn strategies to collect assessment data and use this information to scaffold and continue to support new learning for individualized and small group instruction. This course emphasizes the importance of assessing both content and language development to accurately measure student’s knowledge, skills and abilities that are developmentally, culturally, and linguistically appropriate for TK/ECE students.
