7. DESCRIPTION OF ITEM UNDER TEST1 ..

2~75 AAFFR Rockets ha ,,ing HBX-1 loaded MK 2 Rocket Heada and empty Mod lO]XE-SF Rock e t Motors. The heada were aeaembled with EX 100 Mod O point deton a ting fuzea whi~h were modified by the Proving Ground for s tatic de tonation. Th e lo&ded heads with the f uie wei gh ~d 6,J O ± a 5 l ~s . and the o~pty mot ors weighed 4.0 ± • 0 5 1 bis • tot a 1.1 n ~ 10 .. 3 + . 1 lb e • for th o ! • , t: n d a a as em bled r or s ta t ic dec onat i ons. Th f iller (HBX-1 ) r~ ~ t he heads weighed 1,4 lbs.

8. PROCEDURE:

.The twenty (20) rockets were detonated f0r the following ir.formation:

5 rounds for fragment maa1 distributi on data,

5 rounds tor fragment velocity data, and

10 round, for fragment apace distribution data.

a. The de termination of rragmont ma•• distribution wa1 conducted in a sawdu • t-filled cha~ber, Each rocket wa1 supported on its side in a cane fiberboard box. After each detonation, t~e sawdust was sifte d and the fragments collected with the head fragments and the motor fragments separated and cla11ified separately.

b. Fragm'ent vel(')eity measuromenta were obtained by the usual high speed photographic technique, using a 35mm Faatax camera. Fragment ve locities obtained •~e the mean velocities ove r the first J 0 ,6 feet of travel of beam spray (polar angle 75• to 105•) fra gments,

c. Fragment sp&ce distribution measurements were made in an arena consisting of a complete circle twe nty (20) feet in radius. The arena panels were 1/8" mild st,el plate, five (5) feet hi gh and marked in 5• zones about the axie of th e rock et with th e nos e poi nted toward o•.
