Well here we are quickly approaching the first day of autumn and hunting season for some. I also hope it is hunting season for all the Lions in our District as we hunt for new members to join our “Pride” in order to allow us to increase our “Service” to our Com-munities.
I would like to start off this month by congratulating the Secretar-ies on submitting their MMRs for the first month of this fiscal year. For several it was the first time that they had to tackle this onerous task but I’m pleased to announce that our District achieved 100% Club MMR submission, the only District in MD19 to do so!!! Keep up the good work Lion Secretaries!
July was also a very difficult month for the Secretaries as they tried to submit their Club’s Activities in the new MyLION App. Unfortunately, the APP was not functioning very well most of the time, if it was functioning at all. Finally, near the end of the month LCI shut the APP down to work on it. Despite all the frustration of trying to enter your activities most of you still persevered and tried to get to get them entered. Your persistence and patience are much appreciated. Thank you! Hopefully the major issues have been re-solved and you can now enter your Service Activities.
In this month’s issue I would also like to address an important and crucial decision that our Clubs will be asked to make at MD19’s Annual Convention in Wenatchee on October 17-19. The crucial de-cision to be made is: Should we increase the MD 19 Annual Dues? The MD 19 Council of Governors has unanimously recommended that the Dues be increased. The Dues have not been increased since 2013 although the costs have continued to rise and the member-ship fall. On page 5 there is an article outlining the reasons for the increase and what the increase will entail. Please read this carefully. I urge each Club to vote yes on this proposal.
Looking forward to starting my Club visitations this month and meeting all our service minded Lions in the District.

MD 19 MEMBERSHIP DUES
INCREASE
The MD19 Council of Governors has unanimously recommended action to increase MD19 dues to $25, with a biennial increase of $1, to be evaluated in 2026. If passed, Clubs will see a $3.20 increase in January 2020 with an additional $3.20 increase in July 2020.
For the financial health of our Multiple District, we are at a critical point where a difficult decision needs to be made in order to remain financially solvent. The MD19 Staff, under the direction of Executive Director Peter Anderson, has been reducing expenses wherever possible. Unfortunately, to the detriment to our head-quarters building, necessary repairs are being deferred.
For less than the cost of a latte per month for each MD19 member, this ship can be righted!
No one likes to pay more than they must. Making our dollars stretch seems to be the mantra in today’s environment. However, several factors need to be con-sidered in order to justify the dues increase:
1. MD19 has lost over 3,600 members since 2002, and this net loss has had a direct negative impact on income to the MD19 operational budget.
2. MD19 dues have not been increased since 2013, and ongoing efforts have been made year after year to cut expenses in all possible areas.
3. Increased personnel costs from government mandat-ed minimum wage and benefits laws will put a signif-icant future burden on the MD19 operational budget. The minimum wage was $6.90, in 2002, $8.55 in 2010, $9.47 in 2016, and in 2020 it will be $13.50.
Additional costs for government mandated bene-fits have occurred in the last year adding costs to the budget.

Thank you to all the Secretaries who were able to submit activities despite the difficulties with MyLion website.
Fifteen Clubs reported 39 activities, serving 14,053 people, working 3,363 Lion hours.
Hopefully, now that some glitches have been resolved, more Clubs will be able to report activities.
If you have problems with MyLion contact Lions Cathy Specht at 250-338-0509 or [email protected].
It is important that Activities are reported so that your Zone Chairman, District Governor and International knows that your Club is active and being true to our motto “We Serve”.

VICTORIA CHINATOWNLioness Club
By Lioness Amanda Mills
The summer months are typically ones without meetings, and dedicated family time instead. However, many Lionesses were actively involved with the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival on August 9 – 11.
Lioness Pei Mei Chia was a first-time paddler – hours spent on the Gorge waters with her team, Vic Vixens. They earned a medal in the races at the Festival!
Lioness Pat Hannah was responsible for the VIP Sponsors’ Tent at the Festival which took several months of planning and three full days looking after the Sponsors. Her team consisted of five Lionesses: Gayle, Amanda, Susanne, Joanne and Pat.
I am on the Board of the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival Society and was active in the planning of the Cultural and Kids’ Tent.
Uniquely, Lioness Lily (President) accompanied an elderly senior via plane to Edmonton to visit family and meet up with legendary country singer, Dick Damron.
Our Lionesses were busy in many other community events and services, including Lioness Nelles volunteering at the Govern-ment House Museum, Lioness Pei Mei organizing district lawn bowling events, Lioness Donna doing service monthly with the Veterans and at the Legion, Lioness Irene doing bee-keeping volunteering with country fairs, Lioness Gayle serving at church food markets, Lioness Marlee serving as District 19-I Lioness Cabinet Secretary and Lioness supporting the Dragon Boat 25th Anniversary fundraising event.
Lionesses serve on many not-for-profit Boards, Foundations and Community Clubs.
Lioness Pei Mei Chia and her Vic Vixen team medal.

GABRIOLA Lions Club
By Lion Don Butt
The Gabriola Lions held their 23rd annual Concert on the Green - the major fundraiser of the year for their local charity projects. Even our DG Cec Specht and his wife Cathy attended.
I did the photography and have posted the photos on my website, www.dbutt.smugmug.com. in the gallery “Concert-on-the-Green 2019”. https://dbutt.smugmug.com/Concert-on-the-Green-2019/.
Our committee chair, John Roman ([email protected]) would be a contact person to obtain details about the event.
I have been involved in every one of these concerts from the beginning and have seen the growth in enthusiasm among the attendees of these events.
Concert on the GreenBy Lion John Roman, Chairman, Gabriola’s Concert on the Green
Over 1,100 people were at the Gabriola Golf Course on August 8, according to the ticket count from John Roman, Lions Chair for the 2019 Concert on the Green.
With Rod and the Mods belting out Rod Stewart tunes (and many other songs in between), a highlight for Roman was the crowd singing along to Maggie May.
“It was an entertainment and financial success, thanks to our
numerous sponsors, volunteers and the excellent sounds supplied by The Reid Jamieson Band and Rod and the Mods.
“Brent Stewart (Rod Stewart) went backstage for one of his many costume changes to answer the encore request and he quickly ascended the stage with another great song from the Rod Stewart catalogue.
“Later that evening, the Reid Jamieson Band shared with me how much they enjoyed playing at the Concert on the Green. “They said that they were made to feel very welcome by the au-dience, the Lion members, the soundman and Rod and the Mods. The Concert on the Green is a special event…..with special people!”
The winner of the Air Canada raffle was R.J. Bastedo from Waterdown, Ontario, who will get to use the two Air Canada return tickets to fly to any destination in Canada. R.J. was visiting relatives here on Gabriola when she bought the winning ticket.
Roman said he hopes to see everyone back next year for the 2020 Concert on the Green, scheduled for August 6, 2020. Next year’s lineup of artists will feature tributes to Johnny Cash and The Eagles.

PROTECTION ISLAND
Lions Club
One of our favourites is our pancake breakfast held each year during the Nanai-mo Bathtub Race weekend. The island is packed with friends and family that weekend and we feed hundreds of folk pancakes on the Sunday morning.
This year we decided that it was appro-priate for us to try and reduce our envi-ronmental footprint as much as possible. We researched all kinds of utensils, plates, glasses to replace the styrofoam and plastic we have used in the past. We asked people to bring their own mugs for coffee and if possible even bring their own plates and utensils.
We enlisted the aid of children from the island as our recycling masters and they monitored and helped people get the right stuff into the right bin. We were grateful to the City of Nanaimo for supplying the bins.
At the end of the event we had only a fistful of stuff that had to go to the dump, the rest was recycled. We were proud of our recycling masters and our community for the efforts they put into recycling and plan to expand it at future events.
The pictures are of our face-painted recycling masters.

Protection Island Lions had a busy month in August. We are heavily involved in our community’s efforts to increase our resiliency towards natural disasters, such as storms, fires or earthquakes. To that end PI Lions have membership on various committees dealing with emergency preparedness, FireSmart prevention and effective communications in the case of an emergency.
We have been supporting these groups through the use of our hall and supplying seed money to get their activities underway. In addition, we have hosted a number of events at our community hall that really bring our island together.

Tour de Rock –Vancouver Island
ClubsBy Pat Spencer, Chair for 19 I - Pediatric Cancer https://www.tourderock.ca/
The Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock is a fundraising event that raises money for pediatric cancer research and support programs for children with a history of cancer.
The Tour de Rock team cycles from one end of Vancouver Island to the other, covering 1,000 kilometres and visiting more than 27 generous communities along the way.
Note to all the Vancouver Island Lions Clubs:
Pediatric Cancer is a new role for Lions International and we have been asked to support this great goal.
Tour de Rock will take place starting in Port Alice on Satur-day September 21 and finish in Victoria on Friday October 4, 2019. Please look up the Tour de Rock and the information on it.
Cops for Cancer was started in 1994 and has several differ-ent rides that take place to raise funds for life-saving child-hood cancer research and support services including Camp Goodtimes.
Please ask your Lion’s Club to show support for Pediatric Cancer in this current year.

Throughout the summer found us busy looking after the Lions Den roof which has now been completed and sporting new gut-ters and down pipes.
Scouts that use the upper should be quite happy this year when the winter rains come, dry.
A new paint job in the future will restore this historic building back to almost a new look.
Special Woodstock always brings a warming of the heart for all our members that can volunteer their time. As with every year we are up front greeting all those who come to attend this great day of music and fun. From what I have heard from Lion Brian (treasurer of Special Woodstock) we once again surpassed last year donation amount at the entrance gate. A special and enjoya-ble day had by all.
We also took part in the 110th Year of the Cobble Hill Fair, coordinating the parking along with Lion Sylvia to do the meet- and-greet.

ALBERNI VALLEY Lions Club
By Lion Ron Metcalfe
Together with the Maritime Discovery Centre, the Alberni Valley Lions sponsored their annual Bullhead Fishing Derby. The event took place on Sunday, August 24, 2019, with children aged 12 and under participating.
Registration (free) was at 9:30AM with fishing from 10AM to 2PM. At least one parent accompanied their children and Gently Down the Creek offered life jackets to those who needed one. Although the derby was, at least officially, about bullheads, all fish were measured and a variety of types were caught. A few fishing kits and other fishing paraphernalia were also available. Trophies were awarded for the longest and second longest bullheads and 76 prizes were randomly selected and awarded to children attending.
During the event, fishing and ocean-themed crafts, hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks were offered for sale to adults with a free drink and hot dog provided to each registered child. The food tent was a definitely a popular place with Lion volunteers kept busy through much of the derby.
This year’s derby winner was Hunter Boyd with a 215 mm bullhead and second place was awarded to Carson Cartlidge with a bullhead measuring 200 mm.
