Dedicated to Rotary: Rtn DEEPAK MEHTA

Deepak Mehta was born in 1940. He completed BCom in 1960 from

Podar College of Commerce. Then he joined his father’s stock broking business. He sold his BSE membership card in 2000 and since then he is an investment consultant.

He was a member of Bombay Jaycees for many years and held various portfolios and received International Jaycees President Award for inducting highest number of members. He also received best Jaycees Award. He is a life member of National Sports Club of India (NSCI) and Matunga Gymkhana.

Rtn Deepak Mehta joined Rotary Club of Bombay Uptown in 1978 and held various portfolios in the Club. He was Secretary and Trustee for 10 years. He was also the Director and Programme Committee Chairman for 25 years. He received Best Rotarian’s Award many times. He also received R.I President Citation in 2013 for his service to Rotary. He is District Chairman since the last 10 years.

Rtn Deepak Mehta resigned from Bombay Uptown in 2013 and joined Bombay Mid-Town. He has been very active and attends Club meetings regularly. At present, he is the Programme Committee Chairman and is inviting prominent personalities to address our Club meetings.

His wife Madhu is MA in Social Sciences from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). She is also a very active member in the Inner Wheel Club. She was a secretary for three years and is Vice President at present. They have one son, Devang, who has a daughter aged six years.

Rotary Global History Fellowship

Paul Harris was born in Racine, Wisconsin, USA. He attended Princeton University, the

University of Vermont, and the University of Iowa. For the next five years he did odd jobs for a newspaper as a salesman and a reporter and he worked on fruit farms. In the year 1896 he began his law practice in Chicago. In the year 1905, Harris organised the first Rotary Club ‘in fellowship and friendship”. His initial goal was to

create a club for friendship and fellowship among professionals and businessmen. He was a visionary and always wanted to contribute as much as he could towards society and mankind.

Paul Harris soon realised that Rotary needed a greater cause. While Harris served as President of the Chicago Rotary Club in 1907, the Club initiated its first public service project, the construction of public toilets in Chicago. This step transformed Rotary into the world’s first Service Club. Due to his ambition, determination and single-minded focus, new clubs were established very early in the organisation’s history. Earlier clubs were established only in the west coast. However gradually they emerged in other parts of USA and Europe as well.

Individuals who have contributed more than $1000 to the Annual Program Fund, the Polio Plus Fund or the Humanitarian Grants Program of the Rotary Foundation are recognized as Paul Harris Fellows. A Paul Harris Fellow receives a special certificate and a gold pin.

Paul Harris Society members make a commitment to contribute $1000 each year to the Annual Program Fund.

Paul Harris and the Rotary Clubs founded by him aimed at improving the quality of human life in particular. They also tackled issues like health care, clean water, food, education and other essential needs for the basic survival of human

beings. Each year 1,200 students are provided scholarships due to Rotary’s educational programme. Also, former participants get an opportunity to keep themselves affiliated with the Club as Rotary alumni. This gives them a chance to actually remain connected to the Club and its activities.

The main goal of the Club is to enable Rotarians to work toward the development of society. The foundation is basically a non-profit organisation and the backbone of Rotary is the volunteers who render free service to society.

Paul Harris has not only changed the concept of conventional clubs that only perform activities for pure entertainment and leisure but has also taught people how they can all come together and do something for the benefit of others.

A Rotary Family in Narasimharajapura

During my travel last week, I was in a town called Narasimharajapura in Chikmagalur district, Karnataka. On Tuesday, 4 November 2014, I enquired about the local Rotary meetings with my host who contacted the Office Bearers at the Rotary Club of Narasimharajapura. Since I had attended their Club meeting about five years ago, I remembered that they usually meet on Saturdays.

With the above enquiry, the Office Bearers came to the place where I was residing. I briefed them about our current projects being taken up under Club Service Avenue. They greeted me with a traditional sandalwood garland and a wooden memento with their names in the Kannad language.

Important Changes in ROTARY INTERNATIONAL Post CoL 2013

Representatives from Rotary’s 532 districts met in downtown Chicago on April 21-26, 2013, approving a number of measures designed to strengthen Rotary, increase membership, and enhance the organisation’s capacity to serve. The Council on Legislation (CoL) meets every three years to consider changes to the policies

that govern Rotary International and its member clubs. This year’s Council accepted an increase of US$1 per year in per capita dues, removed limits on E-clubs, permitted satellite clubs, and changed the name of the fifth Avenue of Service to “Youth Service.”

a. An increase in dues means Rotary Clubs will pay Rotary International annual per capita dues of $54 in 2014-15, $55 in 2015-16, and $56 in 2016-17.

b. Districts are allowed to have more than two E-clubs. The 2010 Council made E-clubs, which meet electronically, a permanent part of Rotary.

c. Approved satellite clubs, whose members meet at a different time and location from their parent club, but are still considered members of the parent club. This measure is intended to make it easier for members to develop the core for a new club.

d. It was also approved to change the name of Rotary’s fifth Avenue of Service, currently called “New Generations Service” to “Youth Service”.

e. A measure allowing participation in club projects to count towards club attendance was also approved. The measure amends the Standard Rotary Club Constitution to require that a member attends or makes up at least 50 per cent of regular club meetings or engages in club projects for at least 12 hours every six months, or a combination of both.

f. A measure creating the office of Vice Governor, who would act as a substitute if the Governor became unable to serve was also approved. The Vice Governor would be selected by the district’s nominating committee from among the district’s past governors.

Rtn Sucharita Hegde

I I have the good fortune of knowing both Rtn Sucharita and her late husband, Rtn Ram Hegde. I could count them as some of the finest people I have

known Among the many outstanding qualities Ram so obviously had, his sense of humour and affability was indeed unique making him bond with people so effortlessly. I had worked with Ram on a few Rotary Committees like Rotractor / Career Guidance, etc. and saw the sheer dedication and depth he lent to whatever he was associated with. Ram also made a big difference and contribution to our Mid-Town Bulletin then called Musings as he was Committee Chairman. He made it so much more interesting and interactive. While I knew Sucharita back then, I have gotten to know her better over the years, more so after she became a Rotarian. I am indeed impressed, and I’m sure everyone would think likewise—Sucharita is truly sincere and serious about any activity that she takes up and gives it her very best.

She can multitask successfully with great leadership and management skills. From being MD of Fouress Engineering to running an NGO and Magazine One India One People Foundation, she does it all. She contributes purposefully to organisations like the Indus International and our very own Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town. She also loves travelling and socialising, and most of all, spending time with family and friends. High on the spiritual and cultural quest, Rtn Sucharita Hegde is associated with the Chinmaya Mission. She is a talented and accomplished Indian classical singer and a classically trained dancer. She has given dance performances and has acted in plays as well.

We have all enjoyed the wonderful hospitality of Ram and Sucharita. I have had the pleasure of being hosted at their beautiful home with a family of foodies ensuring guests are well looked after with healthy meals, innovative menus, special ingredients and minimal oil.

INNER WHEEL CLUB spreads the Diwali cheer

While we kept our focus on girl child education and women empowerment,

we have done various projects during the last two months, many are still ongoing.

We held our annual medical camp at SL & SS Girls School, where about 150 girls underwent general check-up for eyes, ears, nose and throat (ENT), skin, dental and gynaecological issues. Their blood test was also done to check anaemia. We are thankful to our Rotararians Dr Anil Tibrewala and Dr Kirit Mody and R/Ann Pratibha Doshi who not only examined the students but also organised other doctors and residents.

Many of our members donated money and also volunteered in the project. This medical camp is not just a once-a-year event, but there is regular weekly follow-up done throughout the year by our devoted PP Usha Aggarwal along with Dr Pratibha and Dr Shashi Bakre.

At the camp, we also felicitated three SSC toppers of the school to inspire other students to perform well. We sponsored education of six girls through National Sponsorship Council (NSC).

To empower village women to start their own endeavours, we have provided microfinance to six ladies in Panvel through Chakshu Foundation of Urmila and Nirbhay Jain. At Kamla Mehta School for the Blind, a Brailler was donated costing R35,000.

At NASEOH, a wheelchair costing R11,000 was donated. At Tata Memorial Hospital for Cancer, R5,000 was donated. At Masker Mother and Child Cancer Hospice, R18,000 was donated for computers in the waiting room to entertain children while they are waiting for their turn.

In the District project, we donated R10,000 for cow fodder to Kushtarog Niwaran Samiti. These

Once again, we acknowledge and appreciate our Rotary friends Rajiv Kapur and Dr Anil Tibrewala and their friend Dr Dilip Nadkarni for their beautiful soulful renderings. Our enjoyment of listening to the music was doubled by seeing those senior citizens so happy. They also kept blessing us again and again!

We are happy that the attendance at our monthly meetings is more than 50 members, thanks to good venues, short meetings and interesting fellowships, talks and demos. In the August meeting, our guest speaker, Sonali Sachdev, was introduced by Dipika Amin, an actor by choice and an orthodontist by qualification. A pleasant personality with charming demeanour, Sonali spoke about ‘Life before a camera’. She has acted in the famous play Vagina Monologues and TV serials Sanskar and Baa, Bahu aur Baby. She also did a role in movie Taare Zameen Par.

At the September meeting our members watched with interest a block-printing demo given by our member Sulochana Sachdev. All our members came in colourful clothes in keeping with the Diwali mood. They performed Garba, not only on traditional songs but on old Bollywood songs as well. It was great fun!

Our members participated in the District Rally in September 2014 and our Zone I won the first prize for the power yoga. We were trained by our members Bijal Doshi and Geeta Parekh. Sulochana Sachdev took part in a dance item. Ashok Mehta walked the ramp with other winners of Fitness Queen from Zone I.

President Jyotika appealed to the younger members to come forward to take up posts for the next year.

On October 16, we organised Diwali celebrations for old people at JJ Dharamshala. While we distributed snack boxes, sugar, biscuits, apples, face napkins, soap, cakes and powder to about 60 inmates, the highlight of the programme was a one-and-a-half-hour programme of golden melodies which enthralled them.

Some of them spontaneously came up to dance with the music.

Service is the work involving the use of head, heart and hands for the welfare of others, irrespective of their status, caste or creed. It relieves the economically underprivileged through personal commitment to selfless service. It contributes to the works of development through physical labour.

Service explores the potential lying dormant within a person through education. Service is concerned with the needs of others. It offers ample opportunities for the development of one’s character and personality. Service prompts us to give selflessly without expecting anything in return.

Rotary professes to this service which can only be effective if it is done with the following five appendages:

Therein, the Bulletin missed to note that Rtn Kejriwal is Avenue Director of Vocation Services at the Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town. The Bulletin wishes to acknowledge Rtn Kejriwal’s committed service and dedication.

FIVE APPENDAGES OF SERVICE

The first appendage is Silent Service. Service not by loud proclamation of your work. Do not confound service with noise. A little noise to attract the needy is acceptable, but the main thrust should be on silent service. I hope a day will come when young men and women in Rotary reduce ambition and promote silent service. The sun, the flowers, the clouds and the air—all serve, but silently.

The second appendage is Humble Service. Humility comes from understanding that we are being given an opportunity to be of help to someone. A delivery boy came out of a shop, carrying heavy load of parcels stacked on a cart and started towards his destination, which was a house uphill. As he pushed the cart up the slope he was tired and rested by the roadside when a stranger approached him and helped him push the cart to the destination. When the boy reached the gates of the house, he said “Thank you sir!” The stranger said, “It is unfair for your boss to have given you this odious task.” The boy replied “Sir, my boss told me that you will find a kind gentleman to help you if you are too tired” Let this kind gentleman be a Rotarian who is humble enough to assist the needy without any expectations.

The third appendage is Compassionate Service. Love for the deprived must be present at all times and expressed frequently. Be a loving giver. The men and women you help are God’s creatures and it is more important to love them whilst helping them. As you grow in the spirit of compassionate service, your circle of service will widen.

The fourth appendage is Sacrificial Service. Unless you sacrifice something—your time, money and other priorities, your service is not complete. Your time and your personal participation are more valuable than your money. Yes, money we need but by merely doling out some coins or notes, you are unfaithful to service and thus, unfaithful to God.

The fifth appendage is Spiritual Service. I do not mean that prayers or offerings to God mean “spiritual” service. Our souls must be stimulated by the divine thought that we are offering service to humanity as our partner to God. May God tinkle a bell in our hearts and teach us to walk the path of service and live a life offering sacrifice, service and sympathy.
