Continued on page 2 • Four representatives of the District, in- cluding the District Governor attended the Presidential Membership Seminar in Pennsyl- vania. • On September 20, the District had a fantastic membership seminar with speakers from as far away as Maine addressing Rotar- ians of our District which was coordinated by our District Membership Chairmen Bill Cur- rie and George Camp. • On October 13, we joined with five other districts to have a Foundation Semi- nar in our District with the Rotary Interna- tional President Elect D.K. Lee as the keynote speaker along with RI Director and VP Mike McGovern, RI Director Elect Mike Colasurdo and others giving informative and interesting speeches. • We have expanded the use of our web- site and registration of Rotarians to facilitate the distribution of emails and newsletters. • e Website has been stocked with many interesting informative articles and sug- gestions for clubs and Rotarians to improve their knowledge of Rotary. • We have formed a Computer Informa- tion Technology Committee under the chair- manship of John Porco which has given the District major information, videos, and pic- tures of seminars and events in an additional District Web Site RIDistrict7230.org. is CIT committee has created a means by which the District Newsletter can be disseminated. • Our Rotary District has published 10 Newsletters during this year to keep Rotarians informed of District events and share in the club events and projects. • Future District Governor 2010-2011 George Camp attended an National Immuni- zation Day during a two week trip to Bangla- desh and India. • In November we had an outstanding RYLA camp in Ashokan, New York offering high school students a wonderful opportuni- ty to learn about Rotary and leadership while having a wonderful experience in the beautiful hills near Lake Minnewaska. is was chaired by Sue Donnelly and Henry Atterbury. • e Group Study Exchange Program By Supriya Mishra Going into RYLA International I already knew I want to start a Rotaract Club when I return to Stony Brook this fall. My experi- ence from RYLA International did not neces- sarily motivate me to become a leader or join the Rotary effort; I had already experienced that when I was an active member and offi- cer in the Interact Club in my high school. My RYLA experience rather taught me how to sharpen my leadership skills and become a better leader than I already am. with Germany was extremely successful.Many Rotarianswere inspired anddelightedtobepartof theprogram.ThevisitingGer-manteamwasoutstanding.Wehavealsore-ceived reports from Germany that our teamhadagreattimeaswell. •WehaveselectedTaliaPageasouram-bassadorialscholar.ShewillstudyinAustraliaduringnextyear.Wearealsoincontactwithlast year’s ambassadorial scholar who is cur-rentlystudyinginAfrica. •WehadanoutstandingRotaryUNDayattended by over 1,200 people who learnedfromRotaryandUNleaderswhattheyaredo-ingtohelpothersintheworldalleviatepov-ertyandachievepeace. •WehaveappliedforandobtainedaPub-licRelationsGrantfromRotaryInternationalandweareadvertisinginformationaboutRo-tary in the lobbyof theWestchesterCountyAirportintheirdigitaldisplayunits. • We held the first 4-way Speech Con-testtoencouragehighschoolstudentstolearnabouttheRotary4-waytest.Ourgoalsaretoimprove ethics and morality among youngstudents. •OurWaterProjectsareaspecialpassionof mine. We have now expanded to severaldifferentareasofAfrica,Madagascar,CentralAmericaandEcuador. •TheMountKiscoRotaryClubhasob-tained a literacy project grant for South Af-rica.Wehavelocalcommunityliteracygrants

By Stanley Herz-PearlmanDistrict Literacy Coordinator 2007-2008 OnJune16th,amidstlivepiano,food,andwine,thewind-uptotheDistrictLiteracyProjectswasagalaeventthrownbyMahopacNationalBankfortheclubsthatparticipated.Theeve-ningalsoservedastheribboncuttingceremonyfortherecentlyacquiredSleepyHollowBranch(andtwootherbranches)nowunderthebannerofMNB.Theover60peopleattendingrepre-sentedMNBexecutivesaswellastheRotarians. TheDistrictRotaryClubsreceivingawardswere:Croton-on-Hudson,Briarcliff,Mt.Pleasant,Ossining,Peekskill,Pleasantville,Somers,Tarrytown,andYorktown. CharleyHellmich,onbehalfofthebank,awardedcertificatestoeachoftheclubs,andparticipantscorrespondinglyspokeabouttheirindividualprojects.MahopacNationalBankhasawardedalmost$20,000InthethreeyearsthattheyhavesponsoredDistrict literacyprojects.Andwiththatseedmoney,manyoftheclubshavebeenabletoraisestillmorefundsfromotherbusinesses.

The incorporation of the DistrictprovidesliabilityprotectionforeachRotarianintheDistrictandinstillsthebenefitsofcor-porategovernance. •We had a very successful and well at-tended Paul Harris Luncheon in WhitePlains. •TheRotaryDistrictConferenceinSara-togaSpringswasexceptional initsentertain-ment, fellowship and international flavor.The Conference was so inspirational severalattendeesseekingtotravel toothercountriesexpressedaninterestininvolvementinfutureNIDs. •Wehave,aftermanyyears,reinstituteda Rotary Leadership Institute held this yearatConcordiaCollegeonMarch1 to inspireRotarianswithinformationaboutRotaryandenhancetheirleadershipskills. •WehavebeenhonoredtohaveoneofourDistrictRotariansPDGDonLeeselectedtobeoneof40RotaryInternationalAssem-blyTrainingLeadersfor2years.Wealsocon-

The Dynamism of Interact

TheInteractprogramwasinitiatedinre-sponsetoRotary’sdesiretodevelopyouthser-vice.ThenameInteractisthecombinationofthewords“international”and“action”. ThefirstInteractclubwasfoundedinMelbourne,FL at Melbourne High School in October1962. Interact is a great way to meet peopleandmakenew friends. Interactors organizedances,sportingevents,andotheractivitiesasawaytoraisefundsandhavefunatthesametime.Workingtogetheroncarwashes,fooddrives,orclean-upcampaigns,clubmembersgettoknoweachotherbetterandbuildmanylasting friendships. At Interact conferencesfor clubs in a specific area, members have achance to expand their network of Interactfriendships and share ideas for projects andotherclubactivities. Interactors improve their communities,develop leadership skills and make a differ-enceintheworld.

The Family of Rotary ByjoiningInteract,youareunitingwithover246,000youngpeoplein109countrieswhobelongtomorethan10,700clubs.In-teractors are committed to community andinternational service, and exhibit leadershipskillsandpersonalintegrityintoadulthood.

As if shotfromastar inouterspaceat-tendees viewed the entire the world beforethemattheRotaryInternationalConventionin Los Angeles. Twenty thousand Rotariansfrom almost 150 countries in the world at-tended the convention to learn how RotarycontinuestotransformlivesandhelpachievetheUNmillenniumgoalsonpeace,hunger,health,literacyandpoverty.AftertheRotar-ian was wowed by the accomplishments ofRotaryinthepastyear,eachwasentertainedbyoutstandingartists, suchasNatalieCole,Burt Bachrach, David Gaines, the PasadenaJazzBand,theAllBoysChoir. TheFamilyofRotarywastrulyappreci-atedbyattendeesatthe“HouseofFriendship”where300standsweresetupbyNGOs,Ro-taryFellowshipgroups,RotaryActiongroupsand Rotary Districts. Entertainment at theHouseofFriendshipwasavailablefrommanydifferentcountries,alldaylong.TheConven-tionwaspackedwithfellowship,funandin-formation.

New attendees walked away from theconvention with pride in the wonderful or-ganization of which they are members andfrequent attendees walked away with thesameprideandcontinuedconfidence in theexcellentworkRotarydoes in theworld. IthasoftenbeensaidthatnoonereallyknowsRotaryuntiltheyattendoneRotaryInterna-tionalConvention.PresidentofRotaryInter-nationalWilfWilkinsonproved to all thosewhoattended thatRotaryShares. PresidentElectD.K.Leeconvincedeveryonethatwemust“MakeDreamsReal”nextyearandhelptheyouthinthisworld,improvetheirhealth,enhanceeducationandalleviatepovertywhileinstillingthetruemoralethicalvaluesofRo-tary. TheconventionendedwiththeresolveofallRotariansthatRotarywiththehelpofitspartnerswilleradicatepolio.

WespeakproudlyoftheworkofTheRo-tary Foundation projects such as the world-wideeffort toeliminatepolioasanepidemicproblem.Weshouldalsorecognizethepoweroftheclub-basedoutreachprojectswhichtack-lelocalproblemsintheareasourclubsserve. Alloftheworldproblemswhichtheme-dia report are also represented in our localcommunities.Hunger,forexample,occursinnearlyeverycommunity.Foodpantriesservetheneedsoffamiliesandindividualswhoaretemporarily deprived of income or facilities.These are often administered by churches orothergroups.Theyallseektoserveidentifiedneedswithout regard to thegroup identifica-tion. Problemsof child care,housingneeds,water and sanitation, transportation, seniorcitizens often living alone or couples in iso-lation, recreation for teenagers, these are allproblems/issues which occur in all our com-munities.

throughatrulyamazinginternationalexperi-enceevenifitwasinacollegecampuswithinmyNationonly,Iwasabletograsponeveryimportant quality of a good leader. Whenfaced with decisions not only must a greatleaderdecideuponasolutionthatisbestbutbest for all concerned. Keeping in mind anactivityfrommyexperiencecalledRYLAball,I learnedthateven if themajorityknewtherulestoawell-knownAmericangamecalledkickball, the participants from other coun-triesnotnative to this gamewereunable tocontribute to the decision-making involvedintheexercise.FromthisspecificexperienceIlearnedtobelessignorantandrealizedthatthe world is much different outside of mycomfort zone. I realized that Europe is notjust France and Germany; I simply cannotcontinuetolivemylifefocusedonjustNorthAmericaorevenjustNewYorkormyhome-town Ossining. I have learned that I mustconsiderothers indecisionmaking,whetheritbeothergroups,othertowns,otherstatesorothercountries.FromRYLAIsawthatwhenaskedtoenvision2030inoneofouractivitiesthe participants from Sweden, the Philippi-ans,Argentina,AfricaandtheUnitedStates,ALLhadthesameideasandgoals.FromthisI realizedthat ifonlya fewpeople thatpar-ticipatedinthiseventcancomefromdiffer-entpartsoftheworldandstillhavethesamegoals,thinkaboutallthoseotherindividualswhoprobablywantthesame.BecauseofmyexperienceinRYLAIwillnowalwaysconsid-erothersbeforemakinganydecisions,IwillbemoreawareofworldlyissuesandconcernsandIwillbelievethatnomatterhowdifferentweareincultureorbeliefs,intheendofitall,weallwantthesame:thebetterforourworld.InthefutureIhopetopassonmyexperiencetoothersandworktogetherwithasmanyin-dividualsasIcaninfectwiththeideathatitistimetomakedreamsreal;thoseexactdreamsthatweallessentiallyshare.

LocalRotaryClubswiththemotto“Ser-viceAboveSelf ”knowtheirlocalcommunitiesandneeds.Theyrecognizetheyareinthebestposition to work with others locally, includ-inggovernmentandsocialagencies,inraisingawarenessof theneedsof theirareasandnotassumeotherswillsomehow,unbidden,comeforwardwiththeanswerstothecommunities’needs. ROTARYISAPOWERFULENGINEFOR LEADERSHIP IN COMMUNITYBUILDING!

International camaraderie was evident at the RI Convention in Los Angeles as was the pres-ence of Rotarians from District 7230.
