Claudia Cannady Rotary 7690 District Governor 2018-2019 Although Claudia grew up in many places – Chicago, Michigan, Toronto and Southern California—she considers North Carolina home. She received her Bachelor of Science from High Point University and Master of Arts from University of North Carolina Greensboro. In her early career, she was in marketing and sales promotion with consumer products companies Hanes and Kayser-Roth and then launched, what became, a 30-year career in financial services. Retiring as Senior Vice President at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management in 2017, Claudia now continues a post-retirement and rewarding Rotary journey.

Claudia has been an active community citizen in Greensboro. She has served on the board of directors of Multiple Sclerosis Society of Central North Carolina, Make-A-Wish Central and Western North Carolina, The Music Academy of North Carolina and Bel Canto Company. She is an avid supporter of United Way of Greater Greensboro, Arts Greensboro, Urban Ministry and The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro. Although Claudia joined Summit Rotary in 1998, she became a Rotarian in 2005 by way of being club International Service chair and District Grants committee member. She was Summit Rotary Club President 2009-2010, District Foundation Advocate 2012-2014 and Assistant District Governor 2014-2016. She passionately supports Our Rotary Foundation and has participated in various international Rotary activities in Haiti, England, India, France, Taiwan, Thailand, Russia and Ethiopia. She believes in “giving to make a difference” to Our Rotary Foundation. She is a Major Donor, Benefactor, member of the Bequest Society and Paul Harris Society and is on her way to join the Arch Klumph Society. Claudia was embraced by her Rotary family when her husband, whom she met at Summit Rotary, passed away in 2015. With a heightened sense of the true meaning and value of Rotary in a deeply personal yet communal way, she is happy to share all things Rotary with fiancé Frank Cheney, architect, avid golfer and father to Catherine and Ben. Claudia likes to hike, read and go to the movies. When not golfing or hiking or traveling, Claudia and Frank are walking their Rotary journey together.

CLUB PRESIDENT’S CALENDAR

ROTARY YEAR 2018-2019

Success leading your Rotary club is determined long before you are sworn in as President. The most difficult part of the process is the six months before installation. All clubs will be eligible to receive a minimum of $400 from the District Grant Funds in the 2018-2019 year. After receiving grant applications submitted in the DaCdb Grant module from clubs, the District Grant Committee will review all submissions and recommend funding to the District Governor (DG) and the District Rotary Foundation Committee (DRFC) Chair for final approval and submission to The Rotary Foundation as a Block District Grant. Global Grant Funds Available for Qualified Clubs Global Grant funds are budgeted to allocate funds for Rotary Peace Fellows, Scholars, Vocational Training Teams, as well as funds for Qualified Clubs to apply for club Global Grant projects. The District Governor along with the DRFC Chair must approve all proposals before application is made online through My Rotary. Clubs must follow all Rotary Foundation Grant requirements to complete application submission for available DDF and Global Grant funds and to receive DG & DRFC Chair final approval. Foundation Giving Clubs are urged to consider the direct connection between clubs’ contributions each year to The Rotary Foundation Annual Fund and the resulting amount of funds (DDF) returned to the District to be applied at the District’s discretion, to District and Global Grants, Scholarships, Vocational Training Teams, emergency projects, as well as PolioPlus fund raising efforts.

ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE IN DISTRICT 7690

Each year, Rotary Youth Exchange provides about 8,000 young people the opportunity to experience the cultures, problems and accomplishments of people in other countries. Through this Rotary program, students are given the opportunity to grow as individuals while their concept of the world is growing too. Participants return with a broader view of the world and a deeper understanding of themselves. As a result, Rotary's Youth Exchange program becomes a powerful force in the promotion of world understanding and peace. Through Youth Exchange, Rotarians seek to provide the best possible environment for students. The program enjoys the advantages of over 46 years of experience and a network of more that 1.2 million Rotarians around the world. This experience and support system ensures the best possible exchange for participants in the program. Short Term Youth Exchange – Rotary Clubs sponsor Ages 15-18 ½ Several weeks long – family-to-family exchange Doesn’t involve attending high school, but students can tailor their experience to match their interest Can include home stays, tours, and international youth camps Long –term Youth Exchange – Inbound and Outbound Students – Rotary Clubs sponsor Ages 15-18 1/2 One year Involves living with a few host families and attending a local high school Resources: District Website Rotary 7690 Youth Exchange Handbook (RI 746-EN) A Guide for Exchange Students (RI 752-EN) A Guide for Host Families (RI 749-EN) ESSEX web-site www.exchangestudent.org

ROTARY DISTRICT 7690 FOUR WAY TEST SPEECH CONTEST

In 2015 our district inaugurated the Four-Way Test speech contest, replacing the Rotary Against Drugs speech contest, which had been held for several years previously. The Four Way Test speech contest was conceived as a means for Rotarians to support students in making positive ethical choices, using as a guideline Rotary’s statement of ethical principles—the Four Way Test. The ideal way to find a contestant is for several students in a school to present their speeches to as large a portion of the student body as possible and for the winner to be chosen from those presentations. The speakers are to address their fellow students, not the adults who will be judging the contest. Winning the school contest and advancing to the District contest is a by-product of the main goal of the contest, which is to expose as many students as possible to positive messages on ethics from their peers. However, not all schools will have a contest, and your club is encouraged to find contestants through other means if necessary. High school speech teachers and Interact sponsors of schools with which you have a relationship are ideal sources of candidates. The date for the District contest for 2019 is February 23. In September Karen Morris, chair of the District Four Way Test Speech Contest, will send updated information to all clubs along with suggested information they can send to schools with which they have a relationship or to other sources of candidates. Information is sent to club presidents, secretaries, executive secretaries, and youth service chairs. If you have a person in your club designated as a contact for the contest who does not hold one of those offices, please send his or her name to Karen at [email protected]. She will add that person’s name to the list of people getting the materials. Clubs may send up to three candidates, representing three different schools, to the District contest. Prizes for the winners are as follows: FIRST: $250; SECOND: $175; THIRD: $125; FOURTH: $100; FIFTH: $100 In addition, the first prize winner will be invited to present his/her speech at the District Conference in the spring. Ideally, clubs should be

contacting schools and looking for candidates in the fall. firming up contests and candidates in the first month of the new year, depending on when the contest will be held.

Please contact Karen Morris ([email protected]) with questions or comments.

ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

Greensboro, NC-- 50 high school juniors and seniors from Rotary District 7690 will attend the 37th annual Rotary Youth Leadership Program (RYLP) in July, 2018. The leadership experience, conducted in a joint effort between the Rotary Club of Greensboro and the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL), will be held at Guilford College. The week-long residency provides the same skills provided to business, political, and military leaders by CCL from their 10 international campuses. Included in RYLP are assessment tests, team-building activities, and mentoring by Rotarians. Brandy Plouff, a senior at Roanoke College who has been both a participant and college leader said, “RYLP leadership training included skills I will use to make a difference. As one of the most significant and fastest growing programs of Rotary service, Interact has become a worldwide phenomenon. Interact clubs are sponsored by individual Rotary clubs. They are self-governing and self-supporting clubs. Rotarians provide support by attending club meetings, encouraging student governance of the meetings and activities. They invite Interactors to participate in other Rotary sponsored programs such as Youth Leadership Camps, Rotary 4-Way Test Speech Contest and Rotary meetings and socials. Interact clubs are required to complete at least one community service or school project and one international project. Through these efforts, Interactors develop a network of local and international friendships and learn the importance of developing leadership skills. They demonstrate personal integrity and respect for others, understanding the value of individual responsibility and hard work. They experience the rewards of international understanding. Each club is encouraged to set up a Facebook page and Facebook group. There is a video on the District website under New Generations, Interact/Interact Resources/Interact Clubs and Facebook http://www.rotary7690.org/7690NEW-GENERATIONSINTERACT.shtm#facebookInteract. The District website also includes a listing of all Interact clubs and their Facebook page as well as a link for Interact to access Rotary International’s information on Interact. There is a link to update the contact information required annually by RI and to read the Interact Handbook or Interact Brochure. Our District website has a wealth of resources on Interact. An annual Leadership Conference is held in the fall for training both Interactors/ Rotaractors/ School Advisors and Rotary advisors. Each club is encouraged to send Interacts, their advisors and the Rotarian advisor to the Leadership Conference. The Rotary club should budget funds to pay for the registration fees to attend the conference and other District activities. Starting an Interact Club is easy and rewarding. Though the Interact Handbook provides detailed directions, highlights include (1) determining your club's interest and selecting a Rotary advisor(s). (2)The next key step is to usually to visit a school's Principal or Assistant Principal in charge of clubs to see if a new Interact Club is possible. (Sometimes Rotarians know students who are interested and both Rotarian and students visit the school together.) Present all the great Rotary goals and benefits for young people. (3) Work with the school to find a school advisor. (Students often help.) (4) Interact Clubs need 15 members to receive a charter, though you might need to begin your club with fewer members. (5) The sponsoring Rotary Club works with the school advisor, using the structure described in the Interact Handbook, to immediately involve members in service projects of their interest. Most of all have fun. (6) The sponsoring Rotary Club will plan a charter ceremony when there are 15 active members. Remember that there are many resources to help you establish your Interact Club and that your District Interact Chairs are also ready to help. District Chair: Jim Fradenburg, [email protected].

ROTARY LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE (RLI) The mission of our Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is to transform Rotary Club members into Rotarians and to help you “find your passion in Rotary”. Rotary provides opportunities for all of us to provide service to our community and throughout the world. With that service comes learning experiences in the areas of leadership, team building, planning, marketing, communication and organization. RLI provides excellent opportunities to enrich that learning experience through sharing ideas with other Rotarians throughout our district and the region. All of our members are leaders, but not all of our members translate their skills into effective club leadership positions. Having leadership skills does not in itself insure good Rotary Club leadership. An effective Rotary Club leader must also have Rotary knowledge, including perspective on Rotary’s history, where we are now, and a vision of what Rotary can be in our community and the world. Rotary Leadership Institute has also proven to be a good membership retention tool for our clubs. Since 2008, less than 50% of Rotary members who have joined Rotary are still in Rotary today. During that same period, over 75% of Rotary club members who attended at least 1 RLI session are still Rotarians. How would your club membership look today if you had 50% greater membership simply by retaining your members? The majority of RLI participants have been in Rotary less than 5 years, so RLI also attracts younger members and fosters new and innovative ideas on club leadership. Knowledge is power, and as we increase our knowledge of Rotary, we increase the retention rate of Rotarians in our clubs. As we retain our members our membership roles increase and RLI can help us retain members and transform our Rotary Club members into Rotarians. Our Zone 33 Rotary Leadership Institute conducts over 25 events each year in the states of Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and The District of Columbia. The program consists of three separate sessions Part I; Part II; and Part III. Attendees progress through the three parts on separate days and complete the program at their own pace. Each session is highly interactive and provides lots of opportunity for participants to share their experience and ideas. The sessions are led by Rotary leaders who have been trained in the facilitation techniques that maximize our learning experiences. Our next RLI event is scheduled for April 20, 2018 at Davidson County Community College in Thomasville, NC. And we will have a RLI event on May 24, 2018 in conjunction with our 2018 District Conference in Pinehurst. For more information go to www.RLI33.org, or contact District 7690 RLI Committee Chair Rick Snider at [email protected] (336-250-9573).
