Polio this week 15th July 2015

The National Emergency Action Plan (NEAP) for

Pakistan has been officially endorsed by the Prime

Minister, outlining the actions that must be taken to stop

polio transmission. It is now vital that the commitment

and efforts of the government, the partners, and the

community as well as funding, be sustained throughout

the coming months to keep cases of polio low during the

high season for polio transmission.

In the first half of 2015 we have seen the lowest number

of cases ever during this period, with just 33 cases in 2

countries as opposed to 122 cases in 9 countries at this

time in 2014. This progress needs to be maintained

through hard work to end transmission in endemic

countries and to prevent future outbreaks.

Guest Speaker: Donna Brahim

Kwinana

Red Cross staff member Donna Brahim, Kwinana Aboriginal Person of the Year 2014

Daughter of well-known Kwinana Aboriginal elder Reg Henry, Donna grew up in Kwinana.

On reaching adulthood Donna originally joined the WA Police Force but found it difficult to

adjust and sensed a degree of racism. She Joined Centrelink for a period but didn’t feel she

belonged their either. 10 years on Donna has a very challenging but satisfying position with Red

Cross Australia.

Donna works primarily with Kwinana Aboriginal youth through a number of programs set up by

Red Cross.

Since the mid 1980’s Red Cross has had programs operating in Kwinana, from Youth Programs,

Financial Counselling, Financial literacy and Budgeting and Family Support Program.

Opened a Drop-in Centre, they also have ‘Good Start Breakfast’ program operating very

successfully. They also have a Food Literacy Program teaching local families how feed a healthy

meal to their children on a ‘budget’

They have an ‘Emergency Relief Program operating with the help of Lotterywest.

The program Donna is most enthusiastic about is the ‘Late Night Youth Program’

The funding for the Late Night Youth Program, which commenced on 22nd

August 2014 ended

on June 20th

2015.

Local Aboriginal elders went out into the community at night in an attempt to reduce the anti-

social behaviour occurring in trouble spots around Kwinana.

One of the aims of the program was to reduce the harms young people may experience or be

exposed to when out late at night and to divert young people away from potential antisocial

and/or criminal behaviours by engaging them on the street, providing safe transport home (or to

another safe place as appropriate) and to providing engaging and targeted youth activities at

community locations and/or Medina Aboriginal Centre.

Data collected over the course of the Late Night program:

Over 116 nights 775 instances of safe transport to young people.

96% of young people transported were Aboriginal young people.

40% of young people were aged under 12 years, 55% aged 12-15 and 5% were 16-17

The majority of young people were transported home or to a another family members

home. On 49 occasions young people were provided with alternative, suitable

accommodation which had previously been checked out by Late Night Program Staff.

A total 51 young people aged 9-15 years have utilised Medina Aboriginal Cultural Centre

including 27 females and 23 males, 90% of whom were Aboriginal young people.

Young people attended the program at Medina Aboriginal Centre on 447 occasions.

Towards the end of the program there were very few young people who were street

present at night, in comparison to the numbers at the start of the program and most young

people are now coming directly to the centre for activities rather than hanging out in

parks and at fast food outlets as before.

PP Mike thanked Donna for her very interesting and informative presentation.

An older, white haired man walked into a jewellery store one Friday evening with a beautiful young lady at his side. He told the jeweller he was looking for a special ring for his girlfriend. The jeweller looked through his stock and brought out a $5,000 ring and showed it to him. The old man said, "I don't think you understand, I want something very special." At that statement, the jeweller went to his special stock and brought another ring over. "Here's a stunning ring at only $40, 000," the jeweller said. The young lady's eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled with excitement. The old man seeing this said, "We'll take it." The jeweller asked how payment would be made and the old man stated, by cheque. “I know you need to make sure my cheque is good, so I'll write it now and you can call the bank Monday to verify the funds and I'll pick the ring up Monday afternoon," he said. Monday morning, a very teed-off jeweller phoned the old man. "There's no money in that account." "I know”, said the old man, "but can you imagine the weekend I had!?"

A brunette, a redhead and a blonde are in a breast stroke race.

The starter's gun goes off and the three girls dive into the pool.

The brunette and the redhead shoot across the pool and get out;

20 minutes later the blonde reaches the end and gets out.

The judge says, "The gold medal goes to the brunette, the silver medal goes to the

redhead, and the bronze goes to the blonde"

The blonde says, "I don't want to be a sore loser, but I think the other girls were using

their arms."
