PirtonFootball Club
Pirton were a succesful side who played in the Southern League.Pirton FC folded in 1993, and in 1995 the current club, LEASports PSG was formed in Luton, by Junior Schools Teachers.This club merged with Shillington and Gravenhurst and has now achieved the Football Association kitemark of 'CharterStandard Development Club
Derek Cook, who played for Pirton inthe late 1940's remembers that theplayers had to pay half a crown aweek towards the coach for visitingaway matches, and that the HitchinFC were only seen as any good ifthey had a Pirton man in the team! He also used to play football in Pirton with the grandfather of Jack Wilshere, who plays for Arsenal.
Fred “Dabber” Titmusplayed local football forPirton, Hitchin and Lutonbefore WW1. During thewar he served in the Lancashire Fusiliers.
In 1919 he joinedSouthampton FootballClub, and had a sucessfulprofessional career, playing for England several times, and also playing with Plymouth Argyll.
NORTH HERTFORDSHIRE DISTRICT COUNCIL
Hertfordshire Football Association originated inNorth Hertfordshire. It was set up in 1894 byMr. H.W. English, a master at Hitchin GrammarSchool and Secretary of the Association from 1894-98. A scheme to control the Association's affairs by a council was introduced. The Hertfordshire FA is stillrun on a developed and improvedversion of this initial scheme.
