Paul HarrisFounder of Rotary

Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary, was born in Racine, Wisconsin, USA, on April 19, 1868, but moved at the age of 3 to Wallingford, Vermont, to be raised by his grandparents. In the forward to his autobiogra-phy, My Road to Rotary, he credits the friendliness and

tolerance he found in Vermont as his inspiration for the creation of Rotary.

Trained as a lawyer, Paul gave himself five years after his graduation from law school in 1891 to see as much of the world as possible before settling down and hanging out his shingle. During that time, he traveled widely, supporting himself with a great variety of jobs. He worked as a reporter in San Francisco, a teacher at a business college in Los Angeles, a cowboy in Colo-rado, a desk clerk in Jacksonville, Florida, a tender of cattle on a freighter to England, and as a traveling salesman for a granite company, covering both the U.S. and Europe.

Remaining true to his five-year plan, he settled inChicago in 1896, and it was there on the evening of February 23, 1905, that he met with three friends to discuss his idea for a businessmen’s club. This is commonly regarded as the first Rotary club meeting. Over the next five years, the movement spread as Rotary clubs were formed in other U.S. cities. When the National Association of Rotary Clubs held its first convention in 1910, Paul was elected president.

After his term, and as the organization’s only president emeritus, Paul continued to travel extensively, promot-ing the spread of Rotary both in the USA and abroad. A prolific writer, Paul wrote several books about the early days of the organization and the role he was privileged to play in it. These include The Founder of Rotary, This Rotarian Age, and the autobiographical My Road to Rotary. He also wrote several volumes detailing his many travels. He died in Chicago on January 27, 1947.

POLIOPLUSSince Polio Plus began in 1985, Rotary’s vast network of 1.2 million members has contributed money, volunteer time, and networking expertise to the polio eradication effort.

* Rotary’s financial contributions to the global polio eradication effort will reach nearly $1.2 billion US by the time the world is certified polio-free.

* Rotary’s leadership, beginning in 1985, inspired the World Health Assembly to pass a resolution to eradicate polio, which paved the way for the formation of the Global Polio Eradi-cation Initiative in 1988.

* Thousands of Rotarians around the world have volunteered during National Immunization Days to immunize children.

* The Polio Plus program helps Rotary fund operational costs, such as transportation, vaccine delivery, social mobilization, training of health workers, and support surveillance activities. Read more about what happens before, during, and after a National Immunization Day (NID).

* Rotarians work to encourage both donor and polio-affected governments to commit the politi-cal and financial resources needed to eradicate polio.

PRESIDENTSAKUJI TANAKA

Sakuji Tanaka, a member of the Rotary Club of Yashio, Saitama, Japan, is the selection of the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International in 2012-13.

Tanaka said he would like to see Rotary “continue its vital work as the force to improve our communities.”To do this work, Rotary needs active, involved clubs, he added. “We are fortunate to have our revised RI Strategic Plan to help build strong clubs that are vibrant, action-oriented, and relevant in the changing world.”

For 32 years, Tanaka was president of Tanaka Company Ltd., a wholesale firm that went public in 1995 and later merged with other leading wholesalers in Japan. Currently, he serves as vice president of the Yashio City Chamber of Commerce and adviser to Arata Co. Ltd., an animal feed and pet food wholesaler. He also chaired the National Household Papers Distribution Association of Japan for eight years. Tanaka studied business at Nihon Management Daigakuin and Tokyo Management Daigakuin.A past trustee of The Rotary Foundation, Tanaka chaired the 2009 Birmingham Convention Committee. His other service to Rotary includes RI director, regional Rotary Foundation coordinator, district governor, and member of the Polio Eradication Advocacy Task Force, the Permanent Fund Committee for Japan, and the Future Vision Committee. Tanaka established an endowed Rotary Peace Fellowship, and he and his wife, Kyoko, are Paul Harris Fellows, Benefactors of the Permanent Fund, and Major Donors. He is a recipient of RI’s Service Above Self Award and The Rotary Foundation’s Distinguished Service Award.

Tanaka said that eradicating polio will “fulfill the promise we made to children in the world” and that “there is no doubt in my mind that the day of this success will be realized in the near future.”

PRESIDENT ELECTRON D. BURTON

Ron Burton, a member of the Rotary Club of Norman, Oklahoma, USA, is the selection of the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International in 2013-14. Burton will become the president-elect on 1 October if there are no challenging candidates.

Burton retired as president of the University of Oklahoma Foundation Inc. in 2007. He is a member of the American Bar Association, as well as the bar associations of Cleveland County and the state of Oklahoma. He is admitted to practice in Oklahoma and before the U.S. Supreme Court.

“This is an exciting time to be a Rotarian,” Burton says. “I believe we are well poised to capitalize on our strengths as we embrace the [RI] Strategic Plan and the Future Vision Plan. My vision is to have every Rotarian appreciate what it means to be a Rotarian. With these two tools, we can make that happen.” Active in his community, Burton is a founder and past president of the Norman Public School Foundation, and founder and past board member of the Norman Community Foundation. A recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, he is a past vice president of the Last Frontier Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Burton believes that Rotary’s promotion of high ethical standards is one of the qualities that sets it apart from other organizations.

“It assures those dealing with us that we can be trusted,” he says. “Most of us are in a business or profession that already has a code of ethics. Vocational service in Rotary just adds to that responsibility. We have an obligation to go above and beyond to make sure that all our actions are above reproach.” A Rotarian since 1979, Burton is vice chair of the Future Vision Committee and a member of the Polio Eradication Advocacy Task Force for the United States. He has served RI as director, Rotary Foundation trustee and trustee vice chair, International Assembly moderator, assistant moderator, and group discussion leader; and district governor.

Burton Continued:

His other service to Rotary includes chair of the 2011 New Orleans Convention Committee, vice chair of the Investment Advisory Committee, liaison trustee of the Vocational Service Committee, Permanent Fund national adviser, and regional Rotary Foundation coordinator. He was aide to 2006-07 RI President William B. Boyd.

Burton has received the RI Service Above Self Award and The Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service, Distinguished Service Award, and International Service Award for a Polio-Free World. Burton and his wife, Jetta, have two children and three grandchildren.

JOHN HEWKOGENERAL SECRETARY OF ROTARY INTERNATIONAL

John Hewko is the general secretary and CEO of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation, managing one of the world’s largest global humanitarian service organizations, with 34,000

clubs throughout the world. With fiscal year 2010 annual revenues exceeding US$400 million, Rotary and its Foundation support 1.2 million Rotary club members in their volunteer efforts to serve their local and global communities.

From 2004 to 2009, Hewko was vice president for operations and compact development for the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), a U.S. government agency established in 2004 to deliver foreign assistance to the world’s poorest countries. At MCC, he was the principal United States negotiator for foreign assistance agreements to 26 countries in Africa, Asia, South America, the Middle East, and the former Soviet Union. During his tenure, he completed the negotiation of assistance agreements totaling $6.3 billion to 18 countries for infrastructure, agriculture, water and sanitation, health, and education projects.

Prior to joining MCC, Hewko was an international partner with the law firm Baker & McKenzie (B&M), specializing in international corporate transactions in emerging markets. He helped establish the firm’s Moscow office and was the managing partner of its offices in Kyiv and Prague.While working in the Ukraine in the early 1990s, Hewko assisted the working group that prepared the initial draft of the new Ukrainian post-Soviet constitution and was a charter member of the first Rotary club in Kyiv.

Hewko Continued:

Hewko has been a public policy scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, an adjunct professor of law at Georgetown University, and a visiting scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He has published papers and articles in leading U.S. and international publications, and he has spoken extensively on political and business issues dealing with the former Soviet Union, Central Europe, Africa, and Latin America.Hewko holds a law degree from Harvard University, a Master’s in modern history from Oxford University (where he studied as a Marshall Scholar), and a Bachelor’s in government and Soviet studies from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, USA. He speaks five languages besides English: Czech, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Ukrainian.

As general secretary/CEO, Hewko leads a diverse staff of almost 800 at Rotary International’s World Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, USA, and international offices in Buenos Aires, Argentina; São Paulo, Brazil; Zurich, Switzerland; New Delhi, India; Seoul, Korea; Tokyo, Japan; and Parramatta (Sydney), Australia.

He and his wife, Margarita, live in Evanston. John is a Paul Harris Fellow and a member of the Rotary Club of Kyiv in Ukraine.

BRYN STYLESRI DIRECTOR

Bryn has been a Rotarian since 1986 when he joined the Rotary Club of Barrie Huronia, Ont., Canada.

He was Club President in 1994-95 and served as Assistant Governor for D7010 from 2001-03. Bryn was the District Conference Chair in September 1999 for D7010 Conference held in Barrie, Ontario. In April 2000, he was fortunate to be selected as the GSE Team Leader to Australia. Bryn was District Governor dur-ing the Rotary Centennial year of 2004-05. He was the District Foundation Chair from 2007-2010.

After being involved at District level, Bryn became involved at the Zone level. He was the RI Mem-bership Zone Coordinator for Zone 24 East from 2006-07 and was the editor of Membership Matters - a membership newsletter that was distributed to about 1000 Rotarians in Zones 24/25/26 and 32. In 2007, RID Monty Audenart asked Bryn to institute a Zone Club Extension Program encouraging every District to charter 2 new clubs every year. He is currently the Rotary Regional Foundation Coordinator for Zone 24 east. In April 2008, Bryn was asked to be the RI President Representative to D5300 District Confer-ence in California.

Bryn has been involved in training at both the District and Zone levels including being the Zone Training Coordinator at the Zone Institute in Edmonton in Sep-tember 2009. He currently assists with training at the Zone level and with the Rotary Leadership Institute in a variety of Districts. Bryn has attended 17 District Conferences, 8 Zone Institutes and 7 International Conventions.

Bryn and wife Randy are multiple Paul Harris Fel-lows, Major Donors to the Rotary Foundation and Foundation Bequest Society members. He has been the recipient of the District Foundation Service Award, the 4 Avenues of Service Citation and has received the Citation for Meritorious Service from the Rotary Foundation.

Joe Clancy joined the Rotary club of Weymouth in 1995. Joe has served as Club President for the 2007-2008 year and has been honored with a Paul Harris Fellow award for his dedication.

He also served his club as Club Membership chair, Club Car Raffle co-chair (the club’s major fundraiser), has been active on the Academic Grants and Awards Committee, Club Bulletin (Newsletter), Interact Membership, RI Foundation, and CHIPS. He became involved in the activities of the district in 2002-2003 as Area 3 membership representative. Joe has served as co-chair of the 2008-2009 Paul Harris Foundation Dinner, the 2009-2010 Paul Harris Foundation Dinner, and as a volunteer at the zone 31-32 Leadership Forum and Institute in Niagara Falls, Ontario. He was appointed to serve as Assistant Governor for District 7950 (Area 3) in the 2009-10 year and is a member of the District 7950 Vision Facilitation Team. Joe was born in Ireland and immigrated to the US in 1964. He has been a resident of Milton, Massachusetts since 1970. Community activities including coaching Little League baseball, soccer and girls softball. Joe also served as a town meeting member and has been active in supporting Easter Seals. He became involved in the real estate business shortly after arriving from Ireland and founded his own company in 1972, which he still owns. Joe has served as a director of the Quincy & South Shore Association of Realtors, director of the Massachusetts Association of Realtors, trustee of the Massachusetts Realtors Political Action Committee, CENTURY 21 Eastern Massachusetts & New Hampshire Brokers Council Director and President. Joe also has represented the CENTURY 21 Brokers Council on the National Level as a member of the National Broker’s Communication Congress. He was honored by the Quincy & South Shore Association of Realtors with its Realtor of the Year Award in 2000. In 2010 he was awarded the Realtor Emeritus Award from the National Association of Realtors for 40 cumulative years of membership. In May of 2010, Joe was awarded the “Stand By Me Award” in honor of the late DG Paul M. Welch. In May 2012, He facilitated 2 breakout sessions at Rotary International Convention in Bangkok, Thailand. In June 2012, he was honored by his beloved Weymouth Rotary Club with a second Paul Harris Fellowship Recognition. Joe and his wife Geraldine live in Milton, Massachusetts. They have 2 sons, 2 daughters, and 9 grandchildren which keeps them very busy. Geraldine is a registered nurse and both enjoy traveling. Rotary has accompanied Dietrich Bilger throughout much of his life. His father was a Rotarian in Germany and served as Governor of District 1930 in 1966/67. Growing up in Europe where short term Rotary youth exchange was very active, he had the

opportunity during school vacations to experience life with Rotary families in France and England. He continued his Rotary involvement during his University years at Hamburg University in Hamburg, Germany, where he studied business administration and sociology and actively participated in youth programs coordinated by the Rotary Club of Hamburg. An invitation to his father and entire family from the District Governor in Israel led to a 4-week family visit there in 1967. Just prior to immigrating to the United States in 1971, Dietrich spent 3 months in Australia as part of a Rotary exchange program between Districts 1930 and 9550.

An invitation to join the Marshfield, MA Rotary Club in 1985 was regretfully declined due to restrictive policies at that time regarding the admission of women. This hurdle no longer existed in 2001 when a second Rotary invitation came, this time to the Rotary Club of Scituate, MA. Club duties as Sergeant at Arms and Secretary were followed by the Presidency in 2005/2006. In 2008, he was appointed Assistant Governor for Area 4 for the 3-year term. As AG, Dietrich has chaired the District Membership Committee since 2009. During the Rotary year 2009/10, he established the District Peace & Conflict Resolution Committee and the District Disaster Relief Committee, taking membership in both. In addition, Dietrich is a member of the District Policy and Guidelines Committee and an active member of the District Vision Facilitation Team.

Dietrich began his career in the US in International Banking, working on Wall Street. In 1985, he moved to Marshfield, MA after having accepted a position with John Hancock Insurance Company to manage the International Marketing of John Hancock’s institutional investment products. In 1995, he started his own firm, providing financial services to institutional investors, which he still manages.Dietrich lives in Scituate, MA, has two daughters and one son (who joined Rotary in 2012) all active now in their professions and living in South Carolina, New York City and Boston respectively. He enjoys European literature, early history, music, travel, challenges and, if needed, can discuss cars.

VALERIE A. PERRY DISTRICT GOVERNOR-NOMINEE

Valerie Perry joined the Rotary Club of East Providence-Seekonk in 2001. She served as Secretary, President- Elect , and three consecutive terms as President from 2006-2009. Since then, she has been active in her club, serving on the Board of Directors, and several committees. Valerie has had Perfect Attendance in her club for at least 8 years, and she

is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow.

On the District level, Valerie served as District Assistant Secretary for two years , Interact Committee, World Peace Scholarship Committee , District Conference Committee Secretary , RYLA Committee and Family Advisor 2009-2012, Paul Harris/Foundation Dinner Committee, Membership Committee, Governor’s Installation Committee, New Generations Committee, and is currently serving the second year as Assistant Governor for Area 7. She was the Administrative Assistant to District Governor Charlie Murphy 2010-2011. She is a graduate of the Rotary Leadership Institute, completed 3 graduate sessions, and recently completed the Leadership Institute Faculty Training. In 2012, she served on the Registration Committee of the 2012 North East President- Elect Training Seminar. She is a member of the Rotary Global History Fellowship.

Valerie retired in 2004 after twenty-six years in various positions with the City of East Providence. She was employed by the East Providence School Department as Secretary to an Assistant Superintendent, and in 1986, she became Administrative Assistant to the City Manager. In 1990, she was appointed to the position of City Clerk, where she remained until her retirement in 2004. During that time, she rose through the administrative ranks of the Rhode Island Town and City Clerks Association, finishing as President in 2000. Following her retirement, Valerie was elected to the City Council in East Providence and was re-elected for the next two terms, serving a total of six years. In 2010, she decided to “retire” from her public life, but remains active in the community. She currently serves on several Boards and Commissions in the City. She is also a Lector at St. Martha’s Church and is a member of the Finance Council.

Valerie and her husband Bob have three children - Elizabeth, Catherine, and Robert; and six grandchildren - Jeffrey, Kyle, Matthew, Allison, Quin, and Thea. Bob, a retired Salesman, was a Marathon runner, who now enjoys daily walks and is a bass fisherman. In addition to her Rotary life, Valerie’s hobbies include gardening, scrapbooking, travelling, and social networking.

District Governor Joe Clancy and his wife Geraldine (GG) met Rotary International President Sakuji Tanaka and his wife Kyoko for the first time at the Rotary International Convention in New Orleans, May 2011. The two couples met again at the International Assembly in Bangkok, Thailand in May 2012.

The International Assembly brings all 534 District Governors Elect from around the world for training, networking and fellowship. It is also an opportunity to meet and hear past and future Rotary International leaders.

Joe and GG have also spent time getting to know Bernard J. Thibaut District Governor Elect and his wife Christine from District 1790 in France, our district’s 2012-2013 Group Study Exchange partners. We will be sending our GSE team to France in April 2013 and District 1790 will be sending their team to our district in May of 2013.

President Tanaka’s three focuses for the Rotary year 2012-2013 are the Peace through Service, Eradication of Polio and Membership Growth.

President Tanaka encourages all of us to follow the Rotary International 2012-2013 Theme “Peace Through Service.”

Rotary Club of Weymouth

I had the honor of meeting Paul Welch shortly after joining the Rotary Club of Weymouth in 1995. I had the distinct honor of being inducted by Paul as a new member. In the years that followed, Paul taught me so much. Paul was the epitome of Service Above Self. His leadership style was down to earth and inclusive. I look back on his guidance as a foundation for what a Rotarian should do and how they should act. His leadership in Weymouth Rotary was an inspiration to me and plays a huge role in my journey as a Rotarian. As a couple, Paul & Bobbie truly inspire all of us to what is needed to give back. He is sadly missed in his physical presense, but his inspiration will be with us always.

Thank you Bobbie for all you’ve done, for not only Wey-mouth Rotary, but also for District 7950. As we proceed in our journey of Peace Through Service in what will be an historic Rotary year, I look foward to Bobbie being with us at as many events as she can accommodate. She will be an honored guest and an inspiration to Geraldine and myself.

Paul was a member of the Weymouth Rotary Club since 1986. He served on the Board of Directors and as Chairman of the Club’s Five-Avenues of Service Membership, Club Service, Vocational, Community and International Service. He was the Chairman of the Joint Rotary and Service Club Committee a number of times and served on many other club committees including the Paul Harris Selection Committee. He was co-writer of the Club’s Bulletin for ten years. Paul served as the Club President in 1997-1998, was a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellows Award in 1999, and was a Rotary Benefactor and a Sustaining member.

At the District level, he was an Area Representative for two years and was the Assistant Governor Coordinator in 2003-2004. Paul was on the District Conference Committee, was the Chairman of the District Mentoring of the Clubs, the District Training Team Committee, was involved with the Group Study Exchange Program, and was an advisor on many District Committees. He was also on the North-east Multi-District PETS Committee, in which he firmly believed. Paul worked for Camp Dresser & McKee as a Construction Specialist for 45 years. He was active in Boy Scout Troop 19 in Weymouth and in the Council on Aging in Weymouth.

Assistant Governors’DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Meet with and assist presidents-elect of assigned clubs to develop club plans and goals. Ensure that presidents-elect submit Planning Guide for Effective Rotary Clubs to district governor by June 15, 2012.

Ensure that presidents-elect submit The Rotary Foundation 2012/2013 Fund Development Club Goal Report Form and submit completed form to district governor by May 15, 2012.

Strongly encourage clubs to support a minimum $100 per capita contribution and preferably more (Rotary International Centennial Goal).

Attend the Mid Year/Pre PETS meeting, President-Elect Training Seminar, District Assembly/Team Training, and the District Foundation Seminar.

Confer with assigned club presidents frequently by phone, email or meeting, and visit each club regularly — preferably monthly — with a minimum of one visit each quarter. Meet with each club’s leadership team to discuss strategies to meet club goals and be prepared to suggest available resources.

Monitor each club’s performance and keep the district gover-nor updated on club strengths, weaknesses, progress toward goals and clubs in need of special attention. Submit a report to the district governor at quarterly meetings

Attend assistant governor meetings with district governor to share information on clubs and activities, and be prepared to discuss progress of assigned clubs and ways to enhance Rotary development and address problems.

Solicit a calendar of your clubs’ events for the district gover-nor’s visits and for the district newsletter. Submit information and updates as you receive them in a timely manner.

Assist club leaders and governor in scheduling and planning for the governor’s official visit and associated meetings with the leadership committee.

Promote attendance of all Rotarians at the District Confer-ence, District Assembly, District Foundation Seminar and other district meetings and activities.

Promote participation in The Rotary Foundation and assist clubs in arranging speakers to facilitate knowledge of Foun-dation programs.

Confer on a regular basis with assigned district committee chairs to assist and promote committee missions to assigned clubs.

Work with the district’s media coordinators to promote two-way information and publicity. Help develop a list of speak-ers available to clubs on a wide range of Rotary topics.

Write at least one article for the district newsletter in a timely manner.

Recognize outstanding projects and Rotarians.

Dues and Fees

District 7950 Dues and Fees

Collection of membership dues and fees by the District takes place one time at the beginning of the fiscal year, which is July 1, payable on receipt.

Please note: your president-elect’s registration and meals at PETS is paid by the District, assessed to the Clubs at $2 per member. This is a value of $250 if Clubs were to continue to pay for this on their own. It is suggested that Clubs budget to pay for your president-elect’s room charge and mileage.

Rotary International Dues and Fees: $70.30* per member for FY 2013

Collection of membership dues and fees by RI is divided into two semi-annual periods: July 1 – December 31, and January 1 – June 30, corresponding to the Fiscal Year. RI remits an invoice and details of what their records show for a club’s membership to the Club Secretaries as the Semi Annual Report (SAR). This must be filled out and signed by the Club President and Club Secretary, adding any new information (terminations, new members), and returned to RI with payment twice a year.

The late Dr. Percy Hodgson was a member ofthe Pawtucket Rotary Club who served asGovernor of District 198 (one of ourpredecessors) in 1939-1940. He later went onto the position of Rotary International Directorand, in 1949-1950, to President of RotaryInternational.A resolution was passed at the 1989 DistrictConference to establish the annual “Dr. PercyHodgson Award,” in memory of his leadership,assistance and service above self. The honor isbestowed by an Award Panel of sevenmembers, including the District Governor, whichselects a Rotarian (not a Past District Governor)who has contributed exceptional service to hisor her Club or to the District during thepreceding years.

The mission of District 7950 is to assist,advise, and support Rotarians and theirClubs in their efforts to meet therequirements and challenges in the fivearea of service and to accomplish theobjectives set by Rotary Internationaland The Rotary Foundation.

As we expand our individual and collective generosities and Service Above Self, we seek :

CLUB LEADERSHIP PLAN

The Club Leadership Plan begins by having Rotary Clubs develop standard procedures for continuity, communication, and Rotarian involvement. The plan includes strategic planning and goal setting using the Planning Guide for Effective Rotary Clubs. Its simple committee structure focuses on the central functions of a club and can be expanded to address club service goals and fellowship.

The Club Leadership Plan provides the basis upon which each club builds its own identity. The nine steps for implementation are functions that all Rotary clubs need to address to be effective. A club may address these functions in any way it chooses. This flexibility allows the Club Leadership Plan to be implemented throughout the Rotary world. The Club Leadership Plan is supported by the new Recommended Rotary club Bylaws, the Rotary leadership developments cycle ( including thePresidents-elect Training Seminar and District Assembly), the Planning Guide for Effective Rotary Clubs, and the Memo of Club Visit.

The Club Leadership Plan has been provensuccessful by clubs around the world and isthe suggested structure for both new andexisting Rotary clubs. All clubs shouldreview the plan and determine whichpractices are already in place and whichwould benefit the club.

THE COUNCILSThere are four Councils in District 7950, organized geographically. The councils operate independently of District 7950. Each club may appoint a delegate and one or more alternates as representatives at scheduled meetings.

Contact the Council Chair for time and place of meeting location. All Rotarians may attend and participate in Council meetings. Each Council meeting counts as a make-up for a missed Club meeting. A Council Coordinator serves as an advisor to the Councils.

Lisbon International Fair & Atlantic Pavilion

Both are within the Park of Nations, 20 minutes from central Lisbon, alongside the River Tejo.

International Fair of Lisbon is only 5 minutes away from the international airport and 20 minutes from downtown.

There are a wide variety of hotels in Nations Park and nearby locations, and easily accessible for all budgets from the Atlantic Pavilion.

The Radisson Hotel Plymouth Harbor is conveniently located across the street from its namesake, the historic Plymouth Harbor. 10 Easy Ways to Attract and Retain Rotary Members

1. Promote via the media, club and district ac-tivities which address important community issues— Each time Rotary is mentioned in the news, hun-dreds, thousands, and sometimes millions of people are reached. More than just enhancing Rotary’s im-age, public relations can help gain support for proj-ects, attract members, and improve the quality of service that Rotarians provide. In order to take full advantage of the media, Rotary news must be pre-sented properly. The following are some tips on how to effectively promote Rotary in the media:

§ Appoint club and district PR chairpersons — Attract-ing media attention requires hard work and research. A significant advantage is gained by appointing club and district PR chairpersons who work in the commu-nications field and understand the media in your area.

§ Know the media in your area — Approach the me-dia strategically. Link your story to a larger trend or current news events. When presenting a story idea to the media, make sure it is brief and to the point. Think of how to best present Rotary in a 30-second sound “bite.” Tailor your idea to a specific journal-ist, publication or broadcast program. Health seg-ments require stories with a health angle, interna-tional news programs require an international angle.

§ Offer knowledgeable Rotary spokespeople — When suggesting a story to the media, make sure you can offer articulate local spokespeople. A spokespersonshould be someone who is actively involved and can inform others.

§ Identify Newsworthy Story Angles — Every Ro-tary story must have significant news value. The best public relations for Rotary is effective service. How Rotary addresses real needs in the community is the kind of newsworthy story that interests journalists. It helps to support your story idea with background materials, such as fact sheets or brochures, which are available from the service center in your area. For more information about promoting local club activi-ties, consult Rotary publications including, “Effec-tive Public Relations: A Guide for Rotary Clubs.”

2. Develop a Rotary website and encourage community organizations to link to it — In this technological age, it’s important to keep pace with the times. The Internet is a powerful tool for sharing club and district activities.

§ Consider developing your own club or district web page. Rotary sites help attract and retain members, im-prove club communications across the globe, and make club project information available to your local media.

§ The number of people reached with Rotary’s message can be substantially increased by encouraging communi-ty groups to send their visitors to your club’s site for addi-tional information on certain local issues and programs.

3. Solicit third party endorsements of Rotary proj-ects — It’s important for Rotarians to share the good work of Rotary. But it is more credible, more believ-able and more impressive to have others talk about our good deeds. An organization with which Rotary partners is an excellent source for a third party en-dorsement. Ask executive directors of organizations and community leaders to talk up Rotary at events, in organizational publications and through the media.

4. Ask the beneficiaries of Rotary service to speak on behalf of the club or district — No comment is more powerful than one made by a person or a family that has benefited from Rotary’s work For example, at a press conference to announce housing units built or support-ed by Rotary, have the head of household or a child speak instead of a Rotary official. People watching the report on television or reading about it in the news-paper will be much more moved by their testimony.

5. Publicize member participation in club and dis-trict activities in business and trade periodicals —Rotary members spend a lot of time volunteering in their communities. Have their work recognized among their professional peers by sending a press re-lease to various industry publications. For example, publicize a member’s work on an anti-violence initia-tive in a local, regional or national banking journal.

6. Arrange for Rotary displays in local libraries, banks, city halls, etc. — Many organizations will permit community groups to put up displays in their build-ings. Order materials from the RI catalog and set up an educational display in heavily trafficked places.

7. Produce a video of club and district activity — Many Rotary clubs have members who have the equipment and knowledge necessary to produce a video, and editing can often be donated. A compel-ling video depicting hands-on activities is a good way of telling the Rotary story. The video could be used as part of a display and it could be sent to interested members of the media and organizations. A shorter version could be submitted for consideration as a public service announcement. The tape could also be used for district conferences and other Rotary events.

8. Promote Rotary’s work with and for young people — The media is often interested in programs relating to young people. They are particularly interested in projects being carried out by young people such as Rotaract and Interact activities and the Ambassadorial Scholarship program. Promoting the work of young people to the me-dia is also a good way of updating the image of Rotary.

9. Seek opportunities for Rotarians to speak at com-munity events and in schools — Visibility is an im-portant prerequisite to membership recruitment. Be aggressive in identifying opportunities for mem-bers of Rotary to speak at community events. Ro-tarians are capable of providing valuable com-mentary on any number of community issues. Be proactive! Don’t wait to be invited. Organizerswill be glad that you called!

10. Speak to the local press club — Every major city has a local press organization. Learn about yours and call them to see if it might be possible to come and speak at an upcoming meeting. Tell them you’d like to talk about Rotary’s role in important commu-nity issues such as drug abuse prevention, tutoring, antiviolence initiatives, and preventive recreational programs designed to provide structured activities in which children can be productive and have fun.

1. Club Secretaries: Update club information. Log on with your club’s password and make the necessary changes.

2. Rotarians & Committee: Click on “Rotarians in Service” Listing”. Add your name to the first line. Use the drop down menu to add your title, Secretary, President, etc. If you have multiple titles or are on several committees, you need to add them in each succeeding area. Encourage anyone in your club that is on a District Committee to do the same. Past District Governors are no exception.

3. Check out the Calendar: If your club is having an event or fundraiser, click on “Submit Entry” at the bottom of the calendar. Follow the directions. It’s that simple. Be a part of what’s happening. Let others in the District know what you are doing. Committee chairs can add meeting dates and agendas.

4. Attendance Reports: Club Secretaries can submit a monthly attendance report by clicking on “Attendance” and filling out the form. Now click and your job is done.
