david (CooP) Wayne CooPer

district Governor 2017-2018The Rotary Club of Rockdale County2260 Costley Mill Road NEConyers, Georgia 30013(Cell) [email protected]

David “Coop” Cooper was born in Amarillo, Texas, and although he has since lived in several states, heremains a native Texan at heart. During the 1960s,he moved with his family to Missouri as his father

climbed the corporate ladder from clerk to train master for Rock Island Railroad. While attending high school in Jefferson City, Missouri, Coop excelled at CrossCountry and Track, and received a track/cross-country scholarship fromOklahoma Christian University.Graduating with a Business Management degree, Coop began working in

the grocery business. He found his calling, however, in the summer of 1980,when a college friend offered him a sales position with an aerial lift rental company. He never left the industry, and today, Coop is president of Premier Platforms,Inc., an aerial lift rental and sales company he founded and first began operatingout of the back of his and Cheryl’s house in July 1994. The company currentlyhas 40 employees and three locations in Georgia. A person who sticks with something he loves, Coop knew not to let Cheryl

Whitehead go upon meeting her on a blind date in 1986. Thankfully, the formerLouisianan felt the same, so Cheryl and Coop married on March 21, 1987.They have two sons, Chris and Travis, and two grandchildren, Gavin and Katie. In addition to work, family and Rotary, Coop also has a passion for hunting.

In September of 2014, he harvested an Alaskan trophy moose. Experiencingthe outdoors, especially in beautiful places like the Alaskan wilderness, mostentices him to the sport.Coop joined the Rotary Club of Rockdale County on April 19, 2006, noting

that the “Fun Club” knew how to have a good time while doing good things intheir community. Likewise, not wanting to miss out, Cheryl also joined the RotaryClub of Rockdale County and became highly active with the youth in theircommunity. At the club level, Coop has served as International Service Chair,Club Administration Director, Club Secretary (twice), President Elect and President. He received the club’s Pat Atkins Service Award in 2007 and the District 6910Robert S. Stubbs Guardian of Ethics Award in 2014. At the District level, Coophas served as 2013 District Conference Co-Chair, District 100% Paul HarrisFellow Club Chair and Assistant Governor for Area X. Coop is a Hue ThomasFellow, Will Watt Fellow and a Rotary Foundation Major Donor (along withCheryl), a Paul Harris Society Member, and a Bequest Society Member.

2016-2017 GeorGia rotary student ProGramOurs is a simple program. Through the medium ofscholarships, we are able to offer our friendship toyoung men and women from other lands in the interestof understanding, not merely being understood. Whilethese young people consider themselves “ambassadors”of their countries, we Rotarians of Georgia are theexamples by which they judge the United States.Being conscious of our responsibilities, we ourselvesbecome better citizens of our own country. As is alwaysthe case, in the application of “ServiceAbove Self”, the giver benefits as doesthe receiver.

Our plan provides that the scholarship cover the cost of tuition, books, roomand meals, and a small cash monthly allowance for incidental personalexpenses. The scholarship does not provide any funds for travel within thecountry, transportation to and from the student’s home country, or medicalinsurance.

The scholarship is for one academic year. Since our purpose is to promoteinternational acquaintance, scholarships for longer than one year preventus from bringing the maximum number of students to the United States.

About 80 scholarships are awarded each year, to students academicallyadvanced to be able to enter a college or university for undergraduate workor graduate schools. Several of the scholarships each year are awardedto students for undergraduate work at the junior college level. The programdoes not contemplate any “exchange” of these students and there is noobligation on the part of other countries to accept students from the UnitedStates.

allianCe for smiles... because every child deserves a smile

Alliance for Smiles is a non-profit organization that addresses the problem of cleftlip and palate anomalies. Our approach is two-fold; several times a year we sendteams of doctors, nurses, and nonmedical volunteers for two weeks at a time toperform surgery on as many as 100 children. We also have established four Treat-ment Centers that provide long-term care for children born with a cleft lip or palate. The goals of Alliance for Smiles are:1. To provide free reconstructive surgery and dental treatment to children withcleft lip and palate anomalies in underserved areas of the world.

2. To establish comprehensive cleft treatment centers in collaboration with localprofessionals and inspire them to support free interdisciplinary treatment programs.

3. To foster an awareness of the necessity to provide timely comprehensive carefor all cleft lip and palate anomalies.

4. To develop and implement programs to identify causes and support preventivemeasures to reduce the incidence of cleft lip and palate.

5. To create international understanding and goodwill by building bridges offriendship among all people.

Alliance for Smiles was established in 2005 with over 54 missions completed andover 5000 children/adults lives have been changed. Countries include China; DhakaBangladesh; Santiago City, Philippines; Accra, Ghana; Singida, Tanzania; Zimbabwe;Cameroon; Nigeria and Rwanda; Myanmar and Mozambique. What sets Alliance for Smiles apart from other organizations is our commitment to

establishing Treatment Centers. Cleft patients require ongoing treatment in the disci-plines of dentistry, orthodontia, speech therapy and psychological counseling. Our multi-pronged approach and long-range model distinguish us from traditional

international surgical teams in several ways:1. To respond to the immediate need, we conduct two week surgical missions.2.We provide advanced training for local health care providers who are dedicatedto the treatment of under-served cleft lip and palate patients.

3.We establish permanent treatment centers where patients can receive follow-upand ongoing care, utilizing the same treatment protocols used in the United States.Eventually, the centers will be owned and operated by the communities thatthey serve.

Your club can be a part of changing the lives of many by participating in a GlobalGrant, sponsoring a mission, sponsoring a child or direct donation. For More Information or to schedule a presentation please contact Tina Hollcroft
