They feel that the project has the potential to reach across the entire Dominican Republic and eventu- ally too many other developing nations. District Governor Elect Georgene Hildebrand and I are asking every club in District 6310 to participate in this project because of the potential it holds for mak- ing a significant reduction in the number of childhood deaths in developing nations. The lack of clean water in many parts of the world re- sults in the death of over 5,000 children each day. That shocking number has been documented. In addition, bad water causes many serious health problems that do not result in death. Our district, through our Water and Sanitation com- mittee, has been working for the past two years to provide sustainable clean water sources for people in the Dominican Republic. One important thing that our committee learned is that providing clean water, while critically important, is only the first step in reducing deaths from contaminated water. Step two is just as important. Step two is the need for proper hygiene to assure that water being consumed is not contaminated at the point of use. The most important element for hygiene at the point of use is the family having a strong commit- ment to hand washing and hygiene. Clean water is often contaminated after it arrives in the home. Data shows that health problems related to the consumption contaminated water can be reduced by 40% if a family has participated in a thorough training program. The effect of proper hand washing and hygiene is like giv- ing people vaccines for all of the water borne diseases in their area. What this project is designed to do is to train people in the Dominican Republic to conduct educational programs regarding hand washing and hygiene. The trainers are going to train the residents of fifteen vil- lages. We will be training approximately 15,000 people and influencing approximately 75,000 people. We will also provide printed materials and other forms of sup- port for this important educational project. The project is a pilot project. We want to use our experience with this project to develop a strategy to conduct follow on projects that will offer the training to the entire country. The Water and Sanitation committee members think that this project can be duplicated in other developing counties. They consider this project to be the starting point for series of projects that can make a positive change in the quality of life for many people around the world. PARTICIPATE IN OUR NEW MATCHING GRANT PROJECT

Our District 6310 Wa-ter and Sanitation [WAS] Committee and the Owosso Rotary Club are announcing the launch of our next district project in the Dominican Republic. Our committee, in cooperation with our Rotary partners from the Domini-can Republic, has developed

an exciting new project relating to hand washing and hygiene. They feel that the project has the potential to reach across the entire Dominican Republic and eventu-ally too many other developing nations.

District Governor Elect Georgene Hildebrand and I are asking every club in District 6310 to participate in this project because of the potential it holds for mak-ing a significant reduction in the number of childhood deaths in developing nations.

The lack of clean water in many parts of the world re-sults in the death of over 5,000 children each day. That shocking number has been documented. In addition, bad water causes many serious health problems that do not result in death.

Our district, through our Water and Sanitation com-mittee, has been working for the past two years to provide sustainable clean water sources for people in the Dominican Republic. One important thing that our committee learned is that providing clean water, while critically important, is only the first step in reducing deaths from contaminated water. Step two is just as important. Step two is the need for proper hygiene to

assure that water being consumed is not contaminated at the point of use.

The most important element for hygiene at the point of use is the family having a strong commit-ment to hand washing and hygiene. Clean water is often contaminated after it arrives in the home. Data shows that health problems related to the consumption contaminated water can be reduced by 40% if a family has participated in a thorough training program. The effect of proper hand washing and hygiene is like giv-ing people vaccines for all of the water borne diseases in their area.

What this project is designed to do is to train people in the Dominican Republic to conduct educational programs regarding hand washing and hygiene. The trainers are going to train the residents of fifteen vil-lages. We will be training approximately 15,000 people and influencing approximately 75,000 people. We will also provide printed materials and other forms of sup-port for this important educational project. The project is a pilot project. We want to use our experience with this project to develop a strategy to conduct follow on projects that will offer the training to the entire country. and the Owosso Rotarians are very excited about this project. They would like every club in the district to participate in the project with them. The project has the potential to expand exponentially. It will be exciting for your club to participate.

We have submitted a matching grant application to the Rotary Foundation for this project. The Foundation has acknowledged the receipt of our grant application and assigned our grant a number. The number is MG # 77105. What the committee would like you to do now is to decide on the amount your club wants to commit to the project. Once your club decides to participate please send your check and make it payable to the Rota-ry Foundation. Please note in the memo section of your check that the payment is for MG # 77105.
