About Bareilly District

Bareilly district in north India belongs to the Uttar Pradesh state is a part of Bareillydivision with its headquarters located at Bareilly city. According to the great Sanskritepic Mahabharata earlier Panchal region is the present day’s Bareilly where Draupadi (amythological character) was born. During the 12 century the region was ruled bydifferent Rajput rulers. At the time of Mughal Empire it came under the Sultanate ofDelhi. In 1657 Mukrand Rai founded the Modern Bareilly city. Before the rule of NawabVazir of Awadh in this region, it was the capital of the Rohilkhand region. Lastly, the EastIndia Company came to this place and made it an integral part of India. Imran HassanKhan, aneminent Indian shooter and a gold medal winner in rifle event at the 2010Commonwealth Games in Delhi, combining with Gagan Narang was born in 1983 in Bareilly.He is a member of the Indian Army. He has also won medals at the South Asian Games aswell as a bronze medal in men's 50-metre rifle three positions team event at 2006 AsianGames in Doha . D. B. Seth, anillustrious Indian Painter and a life member ofAll India FineArts & Crafts Society (New Delhi) was born in 1944 in Bareilly. His work is included in thecollections of the National Gallery of Modern Art . In 1991 the then Prime MinisterChandra Shekhar honoured him by the ' Kala Shri' award.

Geographically, the district lies at 28°37'N latitude,79°43'E longitude and 166 m altitude.The district encompasses a geographically area of 4,120 sq.km. and it is surrounded byUdham Singh Nagar district of Uttarakhand on the North, Budaun District on the South,Piliphit district on the East and Rampur district on the West. The climate of the district ischaracterized as humid sub tropical climate. There is a high variation in temperature ofsummer and winter season. Most of its rainfall occurs during the monsoon season. Theactual rainfall in the district was 772.4 mm in the year of 2015-16.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 6 tehsils-Aonla, Baheri, Bareilly, Faridpur,Meerganj and Nawabganj. There are 3Lok Sabha and 9 Assembly constituencies in thedistrict.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 44,48,359 (persons) including23,57,665 (males) and 20,90,694 (females). The district has a sex ratio of 887 femalesfor every 1000 males. In the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the districtwas 22.93 (persons) out of which 21.9% (males) and 24.12% (females). The majorreligions in the district are Hindu and Muslim with 63.64% and 34.54% of the totalpopulation.

The economy of the district is mainly based on agriculture but its trade and commerce isgrowing in a remarkable speed. The chief agricultural crops in the district are sugarcane,rice, pulses and wheat. Bareilly is the important place for Hindustan Unilever Companybecause it is the place where it has begun to cultivate rice. Zardozi, a form ofembroidery is the speciality of Bareilly. Handicrafts, bamboo art work and woodenfurniture are also contributing in its economy. In the year 2013-2014 the gross domesticproduct in the district was Rs . 28,56,715 lakh at current price.


Rohilkhand University in Bareilly was established in 1975 which was renamed as MahatmaJyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University in August 1997. Most of the colleges in the district isaffiliated to it. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 58.49% (persons),67.5% (males) and 48.3% (females).

Shri Harish Kumar Gangawar, a prominent Indian politician and elected as a Member ofParliament in the seventh Lok Sabha from piliphit Constituency was born on 25 January,1930 at Teolia village in the district. Earlier he was a member of Bhartiya Jana Sangh butlater he joined Indian National Congress. Shri Mohan Swarup, a distinguished Indianpolitician was born on 18 February, 1918 at Sahora village in Bareilly. He was elected asa Member of Parliament in the 2nd (1957), 3rd (1962), and 4th (1967) Lok Sabha asmember of Praja Socialist Party from pilibhit Constituency and again elected in the 5th

Lok Sabha (1971) as a member of Congress Party fromthe same constituency .

The district is full of marvellous temples, gurudwaras, mosques and churches which allurenumerous travellers from all over the country. There are four temples of Lord Shiva(Nath) at four corners of the city namely Alakha Nath, Trivati Nath, Madhi Nath andDhopeshwar Nath. Some other temple with mesmerising art and beauty are LaxmiNarayan temple, Bakebihari Mandir, Hari Mandir, etc. Gurudwara Singh Sabha, GurudwaraSri Guru Hargovind Sahib , Gurudwara Dukh Niwaran Sahib, Qibla Basheer Miyansahib,Karbala Swale Nagar, Christ Methodist Church, St. Paul's Church, St. Stephen's Church,etc. are some most admired and notable gurudwara s, Islamic places and churches in thedistrict.
