I’ve never understood why a Rotarian would not read the Rotarian . The same comment can be made of the District 5240 Bulletin and individual club newsletters. April is Magazine Month.

What could possibly put

“Magazine Month” in the

same Rotary hierarchy as

Foundation Month, Member-

ship Month, Literacy Month

or Vocational Service

Month? What’s so important

about magazines and news-

letters that would put them in the same category

as Family Month or Rotary Awareness Month?

Every Rotarian in the world gets one version or

another of Rotarian magazine, surely one of the

premier publications of any non-profit organiza-

tion. Your club not exactly perfect for you? Rotar-

ian has hints to make it better. Looking for some-

thing to do or somewhere to go to help humanity

and lift the spirits of needy people? Rotarian has

answers and suggestions. Looking for an encour-

aging word and an uplifting thought? Rotarian has

what you need.

Not everyone reads all of it or most of it. There

are some who don’t read any of it. That’s a

shame. For a monthly publication, printed and

distributed as part of our organizational dues, it’s

a superb representation of what we do, why we

do it, who pays, who benefits, and what we can

do to spice up our otherwise meaningless lives.

I’ve never understood why a Rotarian would not

read the Rotarian.

The same comment can be made of the District

5240 Bulletin and individual club newsletters. Next

to the DG, the editor of the Bulletin and the Middie

spends more time on Rotary work than any other

functionary in the district. Now, everyone knows

that merely spending time on something does not

necessarily produce a good quality end product.

But if you don’t read it, how can you judge? So, if

your club president or secretary is not sending

you your copy of the district bulletin or Middie to

read every month, ask some questions.

The Rotarian magazine comes to your home by

mail; the district bulletin and Middie come by e-

mail or internet. You may find out if one is more

important than the other by reading them all.

A suggestion I heard at the last District Conference was to take your copies of the Rotarian, after you have read them

of course, to a Doctor’s office or a Dentist’s office, so others can read and hear about what Rotary does.

Put a new label over the address label directing the reader to:

“The Rotary Club of Santa Maria”. (noon)

You can list your email address and/or phone # or list mine. I would be happy to field any calls or inquiries.

Also, I will be happy to provide the labels.

Fellow Rotarians, it is that time of year where we select our community recipients of our Paul Harris Fellowship award. We have a couple of names from last year, but do not want to over-look anyone that might be especially deserving of the award. Any suggestions to Susan or a board member, would be greatly appreciated.
