State Education Department Honors GLP as a “Recognition School”
Under the direction of Principal, Loran Carter with the support of the faculty and

Kwas’ U.B. Genetics Group By Keith Kwas
Eden was one of the 21
schools across WNY
that
participated in this event.
Jillian Weber, Rosalinda Mormina, Savannah Battleson, Rachel Wach, and Sabrina Battleson took part in the Gene Annotation of the bacteria Cupriavidus Metallidurans. A bacterium known for its ability to resist toxic heavy metals (hence the attire). Their scientific poster was presented at the 6th Annual Western New York Genetics in Research and Health Care Partnership Capstone Event at the University of Buffalo’s Center for the Arts on May 21st.
Stop by and see their poster hanging in the Science wing
display case at the Eden High School.
On Tuesday, May 21st, the Eden Central School District hosted its annual Art and Technology show in the foyer of the Middle & High School. Well over 1,000 works of art were featured, created by student artists in grades K-12. In addition, the Technology Department featured digital technical drawings and a motorcycle fabricated by Eden's Chopper Club.
Collaborative works at the show included 1,000 origami cranes created by 2nd graders (called Senbazuru and cited to bring good luck according to Japanese legend); a giant wing mural in red, white, and blue created by 4th graders influenced by Kelsey Montague - an interactive piece especially suited for portrait photography; a geometric cube mural by middle school artists inspired by contemporary street artist, Thank YouX, a display of clay lollipops inspired by painter, Wayne Thiebaud; and collaborative murals created by Elementary and GLP students during Youth Art Month (March).

This year, we wish a very Happy Retirement to eleven faculty and staff members. Colleen Kot taught Health and Physical Education for her fir st several years at Eden. For the r eminder
of her career, she taught Physical Education at the High School, and this year was her first year teaching 6 th graders. The best part of teaching at Eden was the friendships Colleen developed with the other employees and the relationships she made with the students and community. Eden offered her the opportunity to coach several sports (Volleyball, Softball, Swimming, Synchronized Swimming) for which she is truly grateful. Chaperoning students at various events (Band tour to NYC and Ohio, Sky High) was a great way to spend time with students and colleagues outside of the classroom. Colleen is currently taking course work to become a Stephen Minister through her church. She also will be busy hanging with her two grandsons, Austin, 3 and Dallas, 1.
Lorry Malkowski has been teaching here for 23 years. She taught 6th grade for all those years except one year in 5th grade. Lorry started out teaching Science and Math. Then for a few years, she taught ELA and Science. The majority of her teaching years, Lorry taught all six sections of Science. This was great because she got to know all the kids. Lorry has taught all the students in the Middle School and High School except any that moved in after 6th grade. This past year, the 6th grade moved from the Elementary building to the Middle School. It has been an easy transition for her... once she unpacked all her boxes! Lorry has been active in the union for over 20 years. Lorry has received numerous appreciation and leadership awards from the ETA over the years. This year, she received the NYSUT Leadership award for our district. She also received two best in class awards from NYSUT for our union’s website.
Lorry has had the pleasure of working with a team of teachers that make coming to work each day a joy. She doesn’t know what she would do without them. Being the stage manager for the Elementary musical for 17 years was incredible. It was exhausting, but they had so much fun together. It let her get to know the students in a different setting. Too many fond memories to list!
Lorry and her husband plan on hopping into the RV with their dog and hitting the road. They want to travel and not have to think about schedules. They also plan on visiting relatives in Europe again and spending more time with their grandchildren! She will miss:
The nervous anticipation of going back to school each year.
Those days in class when students get it. Sometimes that new understanding shines from their faces.
Seeing past students in the hallway and remembering how they looked that first day of 6th grade.
Watching students who started out failing or doing poorly learning to succeed. Things she won’t miss Those bright, capable students who don’t care and won’t make an effort. Those students full of potential who
happily do work just barely above the line that marks acceptable.
State tests that devalue any teaching that is truly above average.
Students so full of excuses there’s no room left for learning. Lorry is looking forward to retirement, but she will really miss all the people who she has worked with, laughed
with, and cried with over the years. Cathy Jeffers taught Music at GLP for 19 years. Before coming to Eden, she taught preschool (at Head
Start and then Southtowns Catholic) for 14 years. She received the ETA Appreciation Award in 2001. Cathy loves making music with children! Her favorite part is “Again!” from the PreK or Kindergarteners when they successfully learn a new song or music game. With the first and second graders, it is the “ahhh” moment when they add xylophone parts to a song, everyone is focused, and it all comes together musically. Cathy plans to still be active in the Eden community in her retirement years. She sings with choir, teaches Sunday School and directs Vacation Bible School at the Eden United Methodist Church. She is looking forward to gardening, some traveling and spending time with family.

2019 Retirements (continued)
Karen Inman star ted as a 3rd grade teacher in 2001; went to 4th grade for one year, then back to 3rd until 2011,
when she moved back to 4th grade, where she has stayed until retirement. Although Karen has only moved between
two grades, she believes she holds the record for having moved classrooms more times than anyone else during her
tenure. Seven times in 18 years! Karen started in Room 101 and, coincidentally, this is also her last room -- full
circle. Karen received the 2011 ETA Leadership Award after having served as Head Building Rep for the ETA and
the 2018 EE Leadership Award for starting and acting as advisor to the EE Garden Club. It is difficult to single out a
specific memory, but overall she would have to say it is all those times she saw students get excited about learning,
that “ah ha” moment when the light bulb goes on and they “get it”! Also, as she reflects back on her time at Eden
Elementary, she remembers fondly the days when the curriculum was not so “packed”, when teachers could take time
as a class or as individual students to explore a special interest, then share what was learned with classmates and
friends. Of course, Karen will miss all the dedicated and hard working colleagues she now works with and remember
fondly all those she has had the privilege to teach with over the years. Karen plans to pursue her interest in gardening
-- renovating her flower beds and growing vegetables and having the time to preserve them, so she can enjoy them at
a later date. She will also be joining her friends Ellen and Mary Ann as a docent at the Botanical Gardens. Lorry and
her husband will be traveling when they want, not just during school breaks and not just for a week or two at a time
(she hopes). Perhaps she is most looking forward to reading a book whenever and for however long she wants, since
she will not have to feel guilty about not grading those papers sitting in her school bag!
Tim Wade has been a Special Education teacher for all 26 years. He received an award for teacher of the
year. His fondest memories are of coaching Soccer, Football, Track and Lacrosse and working with great kids;
Coming to school every day and being grateful to work in the Eden School District; Teaching students that have
learning issues, that want to overcome their problems, and when they find success through hard work, there is a
shared bond that lasts a lifetime; The passionate caring teachers and staff that he got to be around every day. Tim’s
plans for the future include taking each day as it comes, spending more time in nature; fly fishing, skiing, kayaking,
hiking and enjoying every sunny day.
Early in the 2018-2019 school year,
the following support staff members
retired: Lynne Bidney served as a
Teacher Aide for 15 years; Tebra
Howard was a Microcomputer
Repair Technician for 11 years;
Elizabeth Dubreville was a Pre-K
Teacher Aide for 19 years; Laura
Wincenciak was the Main Office
Secretary at Eden Elementary School
for 35 years; Randy Cornell retired
from his Laborer position after 11 years
in the District; and Joseph Buziak
retired from his position as a Custodian
after 14 1/2 years with the District.

Alcohol Awareness Program held at Eden American Legion with Eden HS Seniors
Morning of May 22, 2019
Over 100 seniors from Eden High School were bused to the Eden American Legion Post 880 for an
experience they are not soon going to forget. Organized by SRO (School Resource Officer) Brian
Burgstahler, and funded by the town of Eden Police Group, sober adult volunteers stood in front of 17 and
18 year olds to take field sobriety tests- tests that a sober person has no problem performing successfully.
These seven willing volunteers, all adults, then went into a separate room and began consuming alcohol.
Students heard presentations from four Eden police officers, the Director of Public Safety at Hilbert
College, Director of Residence Life and Judicial Affairs at Hilbert College and Judge Cooper. Topics such
as:
Blood alcohol concentration (BAC)
Field sobriety testing
Regulations when driving on a Junior license
Excessive speed, vehicle/traffic incidents, fake IDs
What to expect regarding student alcohol abuse on a college campus
Underage drinking, excessive drinking, drinking parties
Getting behind the wheel after drinking, getting in a vehicle with a driver who has been drinking
Distracted driving, DUI and DWI
Two hours later, after drinking alcoholic beverages of their choice, the volunteer adult drinkers were
brought in front of the students once again. This time when the officers performed the same tests on them,
the results were quite different and a significant challenge. The Walk and Turn Test, One-Legged Stand,
Finger Count, Reciting the alphabet, Horizontal Gaze- all failed. Students were amazed what alcohol
could do in such a short period of time.
Students witnessed BAC being checked, a mock DWI traffic stop and a mock arrest. They heard the
adult volunteers being read their Miranda Rights and DWI Warnings and then witnessed them being
handcuffed and taken into custody.
“This class was important as the Senior Prom is just a couple weeks away,” stated Officer Burgstahler.
He also went on to say, “The ultimate goal was to educate students, particularly in the area of drinking and
driving, and what they may encounter while attending college. We hope that this program hit home and
showed how fast alcohol can change how a person functions. We want all students to stay safe.”
This program will be held each year around the same time.
Superintendent Anzalone wishes to thank Officer Burgstahler, the Eden American Legion Post 880,
the Town of Eden Police Group, Eden Police Department, Hilbert College Director of Public Safety and
the Hilbert College Director of Residence Life and Judicial Affairs.
Most of all, “I thank our seven adult volunteers for their willingness to place themselves in this
situation for our Eden Seniors”, stated Mrs. Anzalone. “Eden is a family, and we all want our Seniors to
think first, act smart and remember this day.”
