HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY CA-1F!
February rolled in like a lion with all the rain and wind. Yes, we needed all the rain.
We have had quite a few activities, despite the weather. Super bowl party, ice cream socials and dinner rides.
Speaking of dinner rides, we had some chapter members we have not seen in a while, meet us at the Old Spa-
ghetti Factory in San Marcos. Thank you Henry Finn and Amy Zych for joining us. We look forward to seeing
more of you this year. Thank you Bud and Mary Brinker for planning our ice cream and dinner rides. And a
thank you goes out to Darrel Exline for hosting a Super Bowl Party. Lots of good eats.
Congratulations goes out to Todd and Gloria Rossiter for being selected as out couple of the Year! Thank you for
stepping up to be our 50-25-25 coordinator, Membership enhancement coordinator, RIFF (Riding Is for Fun Not
Food) ride coordinator; brought to us by them, bike maintenance and painting trailers, and Fun coordinators.
We appreciate all you do for our chapter.
Congratulations goes out to Jesus Montanez (Chuy) for being selected as our Individual of the Year. Most of you
don’t know him very well. He is our behind the scenes person helping those who want to go to TJ. He is a tour
guide and always there to help when you have bike trouble or need a place to stay.
A Thank you goes out to Archie for leading a ride to West Covina for the first California Rally this year Chapter
CA-1I Valentines Run and for all who attended from CA-1F to support them (they were the Archer’s, Maury’s,
Sprenkle’s, Darrel E, Dave F, and Elizabeth T).
Before we end we would like to thank another couple for their dedication to CA-1F. They have no physical ad-
dress here in San Diego, for they are full time RV owners, John & Rocki Rothacker. They can be anywhere in the
United States, but they chose to hang with us at all our chapter gathering and events, helping Ed and Kay Carroll
as they recuperate from surgery & hospital stays (keep them in your prayers). Thank you for choosing us!

Hello California! Are we wet yet? The one thing I love about Wingers is that a little rain doesn’t stop them from
having FUN with each other. The mode of transportation may change, but the FUN doesn’t stop. There are even
a few dedicated Wingers that face the elements with adventurous hearts on two or three wheels just to be with
the GWRRA family. February was a month of planning and preparing and a kick-off rally given by CA1-I. As al-
ways they offered a wonderful Valentine Rally for their 35th anniversary. Congratulations! Even with inclement
weather the wingers arrived (most in cages) to enjoy FUN and activity with fellow wingers. There were plenty of
games and a photo opportunity in the large balloon heart (compliments of CA1-I), and great food. At the rally
we had the privilege to announce CA’s two Silver Level Chapters, CA2-S and CA1-A, and announce the 2016 CA
District Chapter of the Year – CA1-A.
CONGRATULATIONS. It is our hope that many chapters will participate in the Chapter of the Year program.
Many of the chapters already do everything required already. Turn in a monthly calendar to our MECs, Alma
Sprenkle, and start keeping a list of the members that attend ANYTHING the chapter does. Have someone keep
those attendance sheets, and store them by events type or chronological order. At the end of the year you have
all the documentation you need to fill out the score sheet and become a silver (or even gold) level chapter and
possibly the Chapter of the Year. Let’s show everyone how great California is. I know we have the best chap-
ters…it’s time everyone else know it.
March promises to be another great month with the Rally in the Valley in Laughlin, NV. Make sure you have reg-
istered and don’t miss out on the FUN we will be having While you are at it, preregister for the future chapter
rallies and don’t forget Region Rally in Tucson AZ at the Starr Pass Resort (AMAZING), Wing Ding in Grapevine, TX
at the Gaylord Texas Resort (another amazing resort), and a definite CA District Rally in Mammoth Lakes at the
Mammoth Lodge.
This promises to be a great year!
Back to the weather…hopefully by the time this article gets published the large amount of rain will have stopped,
but I must say that it is a blessing to receive in this period of drought. With that being said, be sure to dress and
ride according to conditions. Cars are perfectly acceptable if it means we can get together with our FRIENDS and
FAMILY of GWRRA for a little (no a lot of) FUN.
Be seeing you around California. BE WARM, BE DRY, & RIDE SAFE !
Bear Hugs,
Nancy & Bob Clark

Getting Your Head in the Game: When I first joined GWRRA, I was reading articles all over the place, so I don't remember exactly when or where I came across this advice, but I use this every time I ride, so I thought it would be good to share with you in this month's article. Many of us ride regularly, and getting on the bike and heading out of the garage becomes a routine event. The problem with getting into a routine is that it can easily become a mindless process and you respond by rote memory instead of really thinking about what you are doing. We've all done it... you get on the bike, you know you're going to go right at the bottom of the driveway... you know which way the freeway is... you act on muscle memory instead of actually being aware of your surroundings. That kind of drone-like riding can get you killed. The tip I would like to share with you all is how I keep myself from getting into that "mode". This is how I get my head into the game every time I ride. The Goldwing Owners guide mentions that you should start your bike and let it warm up 1-2 minutes, at least until the temperature gauge starts to move above the "C" indicator, before getting on the bike and riding. This is the time when you can shift into the right mode to ride, instead of running on auto-pilot. When I go out to my bike, I pop it in neutral and start the engine before I even start to put my gear on. As I pick up my armored jacket and put it on, I start to think about where I'm going to ride and what the weather is like. I then grab my helmet and strap it on tight, thinking about which direction I am going to travel, and based on the time of day, what traffic I might encounter. My gloves and sun-glasses go on last, and then I finally swing my leg over the bike and begin to back it out of the garage. Lastly, I push the remote button and close the garage door and make sure that all the gauges look good and listen to the engine to make sure it has warmed up and is running smoothly. Those precious minutes after starting the bike are not spent mindlessly going through the paces like a drone, but actually getting my mind focused on the fact that I am about to ride, where I'm going to ride, what the conditions are going to be like, and thinking about how today's ride is going to be different from just a routine commute to work. Now I've got my head in the game, and I'm more alert and ready to hit the road safely.

KNOW ME ° SEE ME!
REGION F Motorist Awareness Program Focus
Cliff and Char Simpson
KNOW ME ° SEE ME! is an initiative to focus our Motorist Awareness activity planning in 2017. Consider the follow-
ing.
Have you ever experienced this situation? You say, "Where would you like to go for dinner this evening?" And they
reply, "Oh, I don't know, where would you like to go?" Then you say, "What do you have a taste for?" And they re-
ply, "I don't know, what would you like?" Finally, you say, "Well, just pick a place and we'll go there." Even after
more than 48 years of marriage, Char and I still have this conversation.
Sometimes we plan our Motorist Awareness Program the same way. "Well, we need to have a motorist awareness
activity this quarter. What shall we do?" "I don't know, what do YOU want to do?" "Something to do with Motorist
Awareness!" "Hmm, that could be lots of things. Is there a parade coming up?" "Not that I know of. Maybe we
could talk to the Kiwanis Club. Do you know who we could contact?" "No, I don't. Could we talk to a driver's ed
class at the high school?" "I don't know. Do they still offer Driver's Ed?"
I think you get the idea. We want to do something, but we don't know how, or where, to focus our efforts. So here
is something I think will help.
Motorcyclists have long suffered from a poor public image, which is derived from old stereotypes and perpetuated
by the media promoting fear and mistrust. There is now evidence that the promotion of such negative stereotypes
can have safety implications for motorcyclists. It also has broader significance in relation to their inclusion in
transport planning and facilities, road user consultations and the development of countermeasures to address mo-
torcycle crash incidence.
A study for the Federal Office of Road Safety in 1995 found that motorists tended to be influenced by old 'bikie' ste-
reotypes and feel an emotional distance from motorcyclists. They had little understanding of the riding activity or
risks associated with it, nor did they have any knowledge of how to interact with motorcyclists as road users. (Maxine
Kriege,1995).
A number of studies have found that drivers who were also motorcyclists or knew people who were motorcyclists,
were less likely to be involved in motorcycle crashes. Essentially these studies suggest that this is because such driv-
ers are predisposed to watching out for motorcycles and understand the handling limitations of a motorcycle. (Hurt
et al, 1981, Brooks and Guppy, 1990, Maguzzi et al, 2006)

Check and Track Your GWRRA Rider Education Levels
Mike & Elma Maury, CA1F Chapter Educators
Recently, GWRRA National has made it possible for all of us to be able to track our Rider Education Levels status,
riding courses and seminar information. This site allows you to only see your information but does not allow you
to change or add to it.
To access your information, go to the GWRRA National website (GWRRA.org), and then click on either Officers or
Programs from the blue menu bar to see a drop down menu. Then click on Rider Education. On the left side of
the Rider Education main page you will see a button for “My R.E. Information”. Click on that button to access the
log in page.
To log in use your membership number as the user name and the numbers of your home address plus your mem-
bership expiration date (MMYY) as your password. After clicking on submit, you should be able to access the in-
formation for anyone on your membership number by clicking on “View” for each person.
Please contact us if you have questions or problems accessing your information. If there are any corrections that
need to be made, please notify us via e-mail and we will forward the information on to our District Educator for
correction.

Where Can I Take an Advanced or Experienced Rider Course?
We are frequently asked where these courses are available so here is a list of the courses in California
that are accepted by GWRRA National Rider Education. If you come upon a class that is not listed,
please contact us and we’ll check to be sure it’s approved before you take it.
GWRRA offers Advanced Rider and Trike Rider Courses at various times throughout the year.
Generally these are available at District & Region rallies and at Wing Ding. Additionally if an instructor
and an appropriate facility are available the courses may be available at other times during the year
and we will put that information out to the Chapter.
Lee Parks Total Control Advanced Rider Clinic now runs the California Motorcyclist Safety Pro-
gram for the CHP. The schedule is available on line & course locations vary.
Additionally if you are former military and have access to a base, you can take the Total Control Inter-
mediate course on a space available basis. Unfortunately they do not take trikes.
Street Masters Precision Cornering Workshop is based out of Corona and the course is held in
Rosamond at the Willow Springs Race Track on Horsethief Mile. All their information is available on
line. They do a trike class as well as a 2-wheel class.
The Honda Rider Education Center in Coulton is located close to the 215/10 freeway junction at
1301 Via Venita. Their phone # is 909-430-3000. The contact person is Gary Johnson and Mercedes
does the class scheduling. The class is open to all GWRRA Members. The BRC-2 class (formerly
known as the Experienced Rider Course or ERC) takes 4-5 hours primarily on the course and costs
$75. There also is a 7 hour ERC class targeted to Military sport bike riders.
You can call and fit into an already scheduled class or a group of 5-6 can arrange their own group
class. If a second instructor is available the class could be 10-12 students. Unfortunately, they do not
take trikes.
We hope this information is helpful.

KNOW ME ° SEE ME! Is an attempt to focus our attention on motorist awareness activities that will bring us in direct con-
tact with motorists. If the studies are correct, people that spend some time with us and get to know us as PERSONS will
be more likely to look out for us and our motorcycles.
For example:
A Chapter in California reported that they received permission to pass out FREE COLD WATER to motorists stopping in a
Rest Area one Saturday on a holiday weekend. Chapter members had their Goldwings parked in a central area. They had
signs indicating "FREE WATER." Of course, the Goldwings were also an attention getter, both for the kids as well as adults.
A few Wingers encouraged the kids to "climb aboard and let Mom and Dad take your picture." This provided the mem-
bers an opportunity to visit with folks one-on-one and talk about our motorcycling sport. Some of these discussions were
brief, while others lasted over five minutes. Often, their guests left with one of the Motorist Awareness pamphlets. Hope-
fully those family members left with a positive feeling about motorcyclists.
One GWRRA chapter in Mesa, AZ attends Mesa Bike Night. Here, they have the opportunity to talk one-on-one with mo-
torists and other motorcyclists. And again, the purpose is to help the visitors understand that most motorcyclists are good
people, that they may be their child's teacher, preacher or plumber. We stress that we ride safely, wear safety gear, and
attend safety classes. They also distribute the Motorist Awareness pamphlets.
Whenever Char and I are traveling and make a stop, someone almost always comes by and says, "Wow, nice ride!" Or
maybe, "Sure wish I had one of those." That's an opening to give them one of our "Mini-Motorist Awareness Seminars." It
may be a minute or five minutes. If there are children, we encourage them to climb aboard and have their picture taken.
We do our darndest to make sure that when they leave, they feel they have just met two nice, friendly motorcyclists.
This in no way is meant to minimize the importance of participating in parades, distributing public service announcements,
or speaking to service clubs and other organizations. However, KNOW ME SEE ME! is our way to focus attention on the
fact that people that know us motorcyclists as flesh and blood PEOPLE, just like themselves, are less likely to have a colli-
sion with us. If each GWRRA member had a meaningful interaction with one new person every day, how many people
could we positively impact every year? How many collisions could we possibly prevent?
I challenge each of the District Motorist Awareness Officers to present KNOW ME SEE ME! to their chapters. Tell them
why motorists need to be familiar with motorcycles and motorcyclists. Then, help your chapters plan motorist awareness
activities where their members can have one-on-one contact with the public. KNOW ME ° SEE ME!
