Nutrition Tip: Watch the sugar. Often people think by drinking fruit juices or eating low-fat
fruit roll-ups and such, they are cutting out or eliminating sugar. The fact is that some fruit
juices have more sugar than a soda. Reduction of sugar is important to good health;
therefore always check out the sugar content of anything you put in your mouth, even if it
appears to be healthy.

Wellness Tip: Laughter is the best medicine
No kidding. Laughing out loud relaxes your body, boosts your immune system,
releases endorphins, and protects your heart. The good feeling you get when
you laugh stays with you after the joke is over. Science has proven many
physical and mental benefits, so laugh often!

Fitness Tip: Kill your excuse.
If you think you're too busy to exercise, try this experiment: For one day, schedule
a time to work out, and then stick to it—even if you can exercise for only 10
minutes. At the end of the day, ask yourself if you were any less productive than
usual. The answer will probably be no—and your favorite excuse will be gone.
Come and play hockey.
Sicamous Minor Hockey is a small association with a proven and successful
track record. Player development, education, and having fun are the main goals
of the association. The players benefit by receiving loads of ice time at very
reasonable costs. Every team practices twice during the week and two games
are generally scheduled each weekend throughout the winter.
Sicamous and District Minor Hockey Association has produced some exceptional
hockey players that have gone on to the KIJL, WHL, BCHL, NCAA and the NHL.
Including Shea Weber and Cody Franson most recently.

MINOR HOCKEY TOURNAMENTS

Youth Fitness Tip: Drink Fluids. Children should drink a glass of water about 15 minutes
before they start exercising. If they're exercising in a warm environment, they should
drink a large, lukewarm glass of water every 20 minutes during the activity. Lack of water
can cause dehydration. Possible signs of dehydration include nausea and lethargy. If you
ignore these signs, the body may go into heat exhaustion or heatstroke.

Youth Fitness Tip: Warm Up. Warming up prepares the muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints,
and the heart for the exercise that will follow. Children can generally warm up more quickly than
adults, simply by running in place and breathing deeply for a few minutes. They should then
slowly and gently rehearse the motions of the exercise for a few minutes, gradually building up
speed, force, and intensity.
The Sicamous Eagles Junior Hockey Club takes great pride in offering an elite junior experience that
allows our players to develop into leading, character hockey players on the ice as well as proud com-
munity-minded citizens off the ice. They are recruited by the very best Canadian junior hockey leagues
including the BCHL, AJHL and the Western Hockey League. Quite simply, it's our team and it's our
tradition!

The cost of organized sports can be a barrier to participation and limit the choices
for some families. KidSport™ works to fulfill its mission of eliminating the financial
barriers to sport participation, “So All Kids Can Play!” Kids have the opportunity to
reach their highest potential when they have access to physical activity, which can
positively impact physical health, development of social skills, self-esteem, and
friendships. KidSport™ is a community-based sport funding program that provides
grants for children under the age of 18 to participate in a sport season of their
choice.
Winter Fitness Tip: Try a new class. Winter is the perfect opportunity to try out a new class
and a new way to work out your body. Group fitness or small group personal training also
helps motivate you to show up for the camaraderie, the fun, and the benefits that
accompany working out with a pro. Plus, you may meet some workout buddies to help you
greet the spring thaw.

Fitness Tip: Keep on keeping on
Anyone over 65 needs to exercise just as
much as their younger counterparts. The
key is that seniors can have a less-extreme
workout regimen. Strength and aerobic
training work well together. Before you
start, be sure to consult with your doctor
and develop a fitness plan that is right for
you. And when you do begin, start slowly
and progressively ramp up your routine.

Big Mountains! Big snow!
Sicamous and the Eagle Valley hosts some of the greatest
alpine snowmobiling in Western Canada with deep powder,
steep terrain, powder filled bowls, endless meadows and
spectacular views of Mara and Shuswap Lakes.
Sledders venturing to the Sicamous area will enjoy quick and
easy access to four outstanding mountains that offer a large
assortment of sledding terrain. The trail heads that lead to
the sledding areas of Owlhead and Queest are conveniently
located within the community, while Blue Lake and Eagle
Pass trail heads are within 20 minutes from Sicamous. These
four snowmobiling areas are accessed by forest service
roads that are carefully groomed, well-marked and mapped
out in the Sled Sicamous Snowmobile trail map brochure.
The trails to riding areas are approximately 25kms and are
groomed on a regular schedule. After the cabins, the
snowmobiling areas are uncontrolled and unmarked. The
groomed trails and snow filled mountain meadows at Blue Lake,
Owlhead and Queest areas will cater to both families and the
novice sledders. For the more experienced riders, all four of
these mountains offer an unlimited variety of challenging,
technical and extreme riding with steep terrain, intermediate
chutes and deep powder. The sledsicamous.com website
explains more about the variety of snowmobiling at each area
and offers tips for deciding on the area best suited to your
sledding skills.
www.sicamous.ca/content/recreation 22
Trail user fees are kept to a minimal $20.00 fee and help to fund much
of the operational costs associated with managing the four snowmobile
areas including the superb grooming program that Sicamous is known
for. Three of the snowmobiling areas offer cozy cabins to warm up in,
enjoy your lunch and share sledding stories with other riders. All three
cabins are maintained by the dedicated volunteers of the Eagle Valley
Snowmobile Club. This year a huge amount of work was completed at
the Blue Lake, Owlhead and Queest cabins including roof maintenance,
exterior cabin upkeep, stocking of firewood and general tidy up. Plans
are in the works to build a cabin at the Eagle Pass area in the summer
of 2013.
Parking lot upgrades were also completed this fall at Eagle Pass and
Owlhead staging areas. These parking lot upgrades include bigger
turn-around areas with more vehicle and large trailer parking space
which will make your day of sledding just that much more enjoyable.
The lakeside community of Sicamous is well known for the friendly and
outstanding full service that is extended to snowmobilers. There are top
notch sled rentals, a great variety of excellent food establishments, cozy
and comfortable accommodations that are sled friendly, some with
drying rooms and indoor or outdoor hot tubs. Another important and
very valuable service snowmobilers will notice is the close proximity to
all four sled manufacture dealerships in the area, with the farthest dealer
being only 20 minutes away from Sicamous. Also, if you require some
specialized parts or service there are businesses right in town that will
be happy to help you out. What a huge benefit for those ‘mechanically
challenged days’.
To sum it all up, the four fantastic sledding areas, quaint community
atmosphere and truly friendly people in Sicamous are something you
have to experience to truly understand why Sicamous is fast becoming
one of the most popular places to play and stay in the wintertime.
For more information on Sicamous and the great sledding
opportunities in this area please visit.

Wellness Tip: Relax your mind
Meditation is a great means of decreasing stress. Close you eyes, lie
your head back in your office chair, or go and find a quiet, secluded
place to sit. Focus on all the positive aspects of your life and relax
your mind away from the stress of the day. Meditation can be a
quick fix for simple troubles that create stress buildup.

Wellness Tip: Renewing
and Revitalizing
To maintain a mentally
and physically healthy
lifestyle, everyone needs
to relax and recharge
from time to time. But
how you do that de-
pends entirely on what
*you* find relaxing. Take
a hike in the mountains,
a soak in the tub, play
some hockey or a trip to
the massage therapist -
how you unwind is up to
you!
