Principal’s Column This Week’s Whale Awards and Class Academic Awards
Hello, Giinagay, Hai,
Congratulations to Lyndsey Caldecott and the 5/6 class for their
outstanding achievement in being part of the filming project from State
office, regarding literacy and quality teaching. We are very fortunate to
have the calibre of talent within our teaching staff that is being sort after
by the rest of NSW.
Congratulations to Bayley Lane, Noah Gray, Emi Evans, Urukhai Vallance
and our junior boys and girls relay teams, who all made it through to the
Mid North Coast swimming carnival in Coffs Harbour tomorrow. Thanks
to all the parents who supported our students at the district carnival,
especially Stacy Miners who was a leading organiser. Thanks to all the
students who represented our school so proudly. Pak Chris said that the
sportsmanship and behaviour from our school was outstanding.
Parent teacher interviews
Research shows that parents have a significant impact on their
children’s educational achievements. The value of events such as
Parent teacher interviews cannot be underestimated, that are coming up
in a couple of weeks.
In fact, parental engagement overrides all other factors that have been
shown to influence a child’s achievement. It is therefore critical that we
continue as teachers and parents to develop effective relationships to
bridge student learning between home and school.
Parents are encouraged to take the lead of the ten-minute time slot and
bring up issues they’d like to discuss. Teachers will then work through
relevant affirmations and areas of improvement and subsequent
strategies appropriate to the needs of your child. Your child's teacher will
be prepared with some very specific feedback of their performance thus
far in 2019.
I would encourage all parents to take notes of their meeting, particularly
when discussing strategies for your children. Parents can then refer
back to these strategies with their child weeks and months later.
The Waves Program will commence next Monday. We would like to thank
the Surf Club in advance for their generous time spent assisting us with
the WAVES Program.
Thanks, yaarri yaraang, terima kasih.

Book Council Visit On Wednesday, 22 February, Scotts Head
Public School students were very lucky to
meet Amanda Cooper, a judge on the
Children's Book Council of Australia for
picture books of the year.
Every year Australian authors of children's
books submit their book in a competition to
be awarded Children's Book Council of
Australia Book of the Year.
Established with the first awards in 1946,
the annual CBCA Book of the Year Awards
aim to:
promote quality literature for young
Australians;
support and encourage a wide range of
Australian writers and illustrators of
children’s books and;
celebrate contributions to Australian
children’s literature.
Mandy talked about and showed us many
books. Books that had previously won prizes
and books that may be the winning books
for 2019.
If you would like to find out more
information about the Children's Book
Council of Australia go to www.cbca.org.au
The staff and Year 5/6 students had the
expertise of John Morrison present a
Leadership Program which he delivers
and inspires teams from government
agencies, civil construction firms and partners
to achieve elite project outcomes by ‘Leading
and Learning Together’.
John challenges leaders and teams to utilise
their neural intelligence at Head, Heart and
Gut levels to reduce the impact of errors and
therefore build high quality team strengths.
The staff and students enjoyed his
presentation and to take the challenge for
each person to ‘Do their best work’.

Halo! So, what’s
happening in the
Indonesian Program?
Well, there’s lots!
SHPS is leading the way in promoting and
providing the study of Indonesian in the Valley.
Locally at Scotts Head we have implemented
another tool for learning Indonesian; from an
Indonesian person in Indonesia! Years 3/4 and
up are undertaking one session a week online
with tutors we have gained access to in Bali,
Indonesia. It has been working well and students are getting the chance to brush up on their Indonesian
basics live with an Indonesian person. We are the first State School in NSW to undertake this journey and
we’re very proud to see our students doing so well in these sessions.
Bu Bibi and Pak Mur have been instrumental in motivating and engaging our students here at SHPS to learn
more about performance skills including dance and singing. Pak Mur will be starting select dance groups as
an extracurricular activity upon his return from Indonesia. These activities will culminate in some great
Indonesian performances from our students!
Bu Bibi has successfully set up our junior classes to be involved in the Early Language Learning Acquisition
(ELLA) app and we’re just waiting on our log on details for our K-2 students to get a great start with their
Indonesian learning. This will be something students can learn at home too, and parents!
Apart from teaching at SHPS, Pak Karl is also teaching Indonesian at Macksville High School in both year 7
and now year 8. He is supporting our students who are now year 7 at MHS and he is teaching a class of 24
year 8 students who have elected to enter an enrichment class designed to help them on their way to
completing Indonesian as a HSC subject. This is great news for MHS and the learning of Indonesian in NSW.
To further strengthen our Indonesian networks and provide authentic experiences for our students at SHPS,
we have invited the Indonesian Ambassador and his entourage to come and visit us. They have kindly
accepted and will be visiting on Friday 17 May. This visitation will include performances, cooking and a lot of
networking at various levels. Our students will be very lucky to join in on cultural activities and, at the same
time, reinforce their understanding that learning Indonesian, and learning in Indonesian, has a positive effect
on their development and future outcomes.
Terima kasih banyak orang tua atas dukungan Anda, (Thank you so much parents for your support)
The Indonesian Team @ SHPS
Did you know that the language Indonesian is not the first language of all Indonesians? It is the
language used to unite over 265 million people living on over 17 000 islands in the Indonesian
archipelago. Do you know how many different languages are spoken in Indonesia?
The answer will be in next week’s newsletter.

Introducing LASH talks at The Hub
On the first Thursday of every month, starting on 7 March, The Hub will have an evening of expanding
your mind. About what? About Scotts Head and its beginnings. We call these talks LASH talks, Learning
About Scotts Head.
Our speakers will trace the history of our beautiful village and surrounds from its very earliest beginnings.
LASH One, on 7 March, will cover how the land formed. There is an Indigenous view and a scientific one.
Michael Jarrett, a Gumbaynggirr man, will recount the Dreamtime stories that tell us how the various
features in our landscape formed, like our headland, the coast, Yarriabini, the Warrell Creek, the
Nambucca River etc
John Schmidt, trained in the earth sciences and a local of many years, will give us the scientific view on
how the land we live on was formed. John points out that there are many similarities in the indigenous
and scientific views.
We plan on beginning the evening at 6.30 pm with a wine/beer/iced tea on arrival, followed by foraging at
the grazing table. Then the talks from 7.30 to 8.30 pm. After the talks, sweets and coffee will be served.
Cost? $29/head!
We see the time after the LASH talks as an opportunity for us all to get to know each other better.
LASH Two, on 4 April, will be about the first people to come here
The Aboriginal people, of course, were the first to come, followed 50,000 years later by Europeans.
Michael Jarrett and John Schmidt will again team up. Michael will tell us about the Dreamtime stories
describing how the Gumbaynggirr and Ngaambaa people came here.
John has a great knowledge of the first Europeans, namely the cedar getters and the government
surveyor, the man who had first contact with ‘the people’.
