THE 2020 rising-two-year-old Angus bull sales season in Tairawhiti looks to be on par with last year, despite the impact of the Covid-19 crisis.More than 400 young bulls will go under the auctioneer's hammer between June 22 and 24 from studs stretching from Turiroa near Wairoa to Ratanui near Tolaga Bay.Auctioneer Neville Clark from Carrfields will steer nearly all of the Angus auctions this season.“I think it is going to be a very positive sales period.“When we look at everything happening around the world — the Covid-19 virus, the worldwide protein shortage, droughts and fires in many places — they have all affected the industry worldwide."But it is actually a positive for the New Zealand pastoral industry, because we are the world's best farmers at producing grass-fed beef and genetics. Putting good bulls out is what makes money for the farmers and the country."Neville has had a good look at the line-up of bulls to be presented for sale in

this region this year."I've had a look at them all and once again, the East Coast cattle will come to the fore — and it is also the diversity of bulls that we can supply."If you want a big bull we've got them, if you want something smaller, we've got them too. Everyone is catered for."He said one of the real hallmarks of East Coast cattle is that they have been thoroughly inspected."You can guarantee that the quality is spot on. It's top notch."No other district inspects their bulls like we do, and that's a seal of approval for Tairawhiti cattle."The other thing about the diversity of the cattle we offer is the diversity in price. There's something for everyone, and because our quality is so good, our bulls are value for money — in comparison to those in a lot of other places."Neville said he was definitely looking forward to Bull Week."I'm locked and loaded. I cannot wait. I'm losing sleep waiting for it to happen."Long-time former PGG Wrightson

auctioneer Bruce Orr said Covid-19 and the dry has not had much of an effect on the build-up to the sales season in this region."Also, previous sales this season have been as good as last year in a lot of cases, and there is strong inquiry for good types of bulls."I anticipate we will have a good turnout of buyers for the Gisborne sales."A lot of people in other places have said to me they will use the opportunity to get away from home after the lockdown period, and sales week in Gisborne has a lot of appeal."As Rangatira Angus studmaster Charlie Dowding put it, “East Coast breeders always present their cattle so well for sale and people countrywide really enjoy the wonderful East Coast Bull Week."Another positive this year will be the number of local studs that will run their sales live online as well, so out-of-town buyers who are unable to travel can still participate."Angus Bull Week 2020 looms as a very exciting time indeed.

KAHARAU Stud on Rimunui Station o˜ Riverside Road will present the sons of new outcross sires in their sale this season.

° e stud will present 62 rising two-year-olds for sale by auction in their on-farm sales rostrum on the evening of Monday June 22.

“We have been so fortunate with our season here at Rimunui, and while we were a bit dry through January, the season has been very kind to us ever since," said studmaster Penny Hoogerbrug.

"Our thoughts are very much with those who are still a˜ ected by the dry conditions."

° e sons of new sires include progeny from Tangihau Bayly L57, that Kaharau purchased for $42,000 in 2016.

"He has produced powerful bulls with muscle, grunt and a great back-end," Penny said.

“° e sons of William of Stern are bulls with X-factor, softness, length and presence and the sons of Taimate Lazarus L12 are bulls with style and great carcasses.”

° e line-up has been assessed to receive the AA tick.

“So you can buy a Kaharau bull with confi dence.”

Penny said the stud invests heavily in

its breeding programme to pass on quality genetics to their clients.

° ey purchase sire bulls and semen from throughout New Zealand and Australia.

"We annually co-ordinate a signifi cant AI programme with MA cows and heifers, and an ET programme, using our specially selected donor cows.

“We are not chasing extreme traits, but rather following a balanced approach with our breeding programme.”

She said Kaharau places huge importance on the phenotypical attributes of their cattle, while also focusing on the genetics they are introducing into the herd.

“We value their traits highly, and are proud to present for sale balanced, strong and functional cattle, that are phenotypically correct and structurally sound.

“° ey have longevity and can do the job for our buyers on the hill country.”

In a new feature this year, the stud's auction will also be delivered online by Carrfi elds AuctionsPlus for those would-be buyers unable to attend the on-farm event.

“° e whole Kaharau team looks forward to welcoming everyone to our sales complex later this month.”

New approach to farmingTHE renowned Turihaua Angus stud

have allowed the environment to dictate their decision-making around growing great bulls for over 120 years, and stud manager Paul Williams said that has not changed.

The stud will put up 69 rising two-year-olds at their 3.30pm sale on June 23.

"This year’s line-up have all the attributes we are aiming to achieve and are headlined by sons of Turihaua Rhino, Turihaua King, Turihaua Hulk, Turihaua Mammoth and Goldwyn H817.

“All the bulls have been service-capacity tested, BVD-tested negative and vaccinated, AA-inspected and come with our three-year guarantee.”

Paul said their goals as cattle breeders remain the same.

"The aim is to offer a compact, highly fertile breeding package with incredible constitution and inherent efficiency — the key drivers of production in any cow herd.

Turihaua has usually catered for over 400 people at past June sales.

"If we remain in Alert Level 2, we ask people to consider whether they are a prospective registered buyer before attending. We are sure our clients and supporters are aware of this and we would like everyone to keep an eye on the Turihaua website and Facebook page for updates.

"We strongly encourage you to get in touch with us and to view the bulls on-farm prior to the sale if you would like to make your purchasing decisions as part of a large group."

For more than 10 years, Turihaua Angus have been practising Regenerative Agriculture.

"Regenerative Agriculture is a system of farming principles and practices that increases biodiversity, enriches soils, improves watersheds, and enhances ecosystem services" he said.

"Regenerative Agriculture aims to capture carbon in soil and above ground biomass, reversing current global trends of atmospheric accumulation.

"At the same time, it offers increased yields, resilience to climate instability, and higher health and vitality for farming and its communities," Paul said.

"We have always believed in a low input system where the environment dictates our decision-making.

“The transition from a chemical fertiliser

programme to a more biological approach was an easy one to make, especially with the assistance of Dr Phillip Schofield from Abron. We have also employed the services of Integrity Soils and together they have helped us set some exciting goals.”

Those goals include learning new regenerative techniques to improve soil health, reduce inputs and lift production; to farm holistically and allow the environment to guide decisions; to be a benchmark farm for Regen Ag, a leader in medium pastoral hill country; improve soil carbon; and adapt the livestock policies to assist in the processes.

Other goals include developing the genetics to suit the system (low input, high constitution); offer a genetic package that excels in fertility, soundness and efficiency; supply a nutrient-dense beef product (Diamond Beef); improve farm biodiversity through pest control and retiring and planting waterways; and leave the farm in an improved condition for future generations.

"The main reason behind this shift toward a more holistic farming approach is simple — Healthy Soil — Healthy Pasture — Healthy Water — Healthy Animals — Healthy Food — Healthy Humans," Paul said.

Diamond Beef continues to thrive even under the Covid-19 lockdown.

"Fletch and the team at the Village Butchery have done an excellent job adapting their business to continue to provide our beef to the local community.

"There is often a silver lining that comes out of an economic shakedown, and this has been the case at the Village Butchery.

"They restructured sales to online beef boxes which have been popular and is opening up a new aspect to the business. It also gives us more scope to target consumers out of the district and grow volumes," Paul said.

"We are also developing a collaboration with Food Cartel (Gisborne’s My Food Bag equivalent) which will be an essential piece of the puzzle allowing us to shift bigger volumes of secondary cuts.

“Support has been exceptional, and sales have remained steady with three to four carcases being processed a week.”

The Williams family look forward to sales day on June 23.

ANOTHER QUALITY YEAR: The team at Turihaua Angus, headed by Paul Williams, are pleased with the quality and evenness of their line again this year.

Quality over quantityLANE Bros Whangara Angus have catalogued 34 bulls for sale this season and stud manager Robbie Kirkpatrick has been very picky again in choosing the right bulls for the sale line-up.Whangara Angus will be all set for the on-farm auction on June 23 at 12pm."The demand for a quality eating experience is still at the forefront of the consumers’ priorities, so we are not deviating from our Bred for Better Beef Programme," Mr Kirkpatrick said."Breeding bulls that make money through the entire chain is what we are all about here at Whangara Angus."We are receiving all of the benefits of our stud breeding programme in our own commercial herd and so are the clients who have been on this journey with us for the last few years," he said.Robbie said the bulls did come off the high hill country lighter at the beginning of the year."But they have performed as we would expect with our great growth traits. We

have been fortunate to have not had the effect of drought which has hit some in our region.""The 34 bulls for sale represent quality and impact over quantity. "Not to get ahead of myself, but the weaners coming up for the Spring Yearling sale and 2021 sale are impressive and I am excited."We have our last line of HPCA Intensity Sons on offer — these bulls were highly sought after in our 2018 sale."Not only was Intensity an outstanding performer in the Beef and Lamb NZ Beef Progeny test, but he has made a positive impact in our herd and I am retaining a son for our breeding programme in October. "We also have some Intensity grandsons on offer and again some more by Pathfinder Genesis."Robbie said Whangara Angus Bulls come with extra confidence for the buyer as they continue to genomically test their registered cattle to provide accuracy in the heritability of traits.

New sires in Turiroa sale

TURIROA Angus near Wairoa have enjoyed a very good autumn and it has been reflected in the quality of this year's line-up of rising two-year-olds, said studmaster Andrew Powdrell.

Turiroa will catalogue 54 bulls for their 76th annual on-farm bull sale on June 24.

"There was enough rain when it was necessary and we feel very fortunate as many other parts of the country are in a severe drought," Andrew said.

"We have had a few issues on the hills with dams drying up, but the flats tend to pug and go to mud. The drier start to winter has meant we have been able to keep the bulls in good nick.

"We hope that recent rain in drought affected areas will help relieve things for everyone."

The stud has some new and exciting sires represented this year.

"Turiroa Complete 16M013, who was used as a yearling, has nine sons in the sale.

"The complete sons are well-fleshed cattle and offer a bit more carcase data as well.

"Lot 1 is a very smart son and we will keep 100 straws for in-herd use. Also,

Goldwyn Napoleon has left some very meaty sons for us with moderate growth and good EMA and fats. Matauri Outlaw 426 and Tangihau Top Shelf L021, who traces back to Braveheart of Stern, have also done a good job."

The team at Turiroa think this year’s sale line-up has turned out to be one of the best they have put up for some time, Andrew said.

"They have some of the best EBV’s we have catalogued to date, without sacrificing the fundamentals of size, constitution, fertility, type and soundness.

"We are starting to get the balance between phenotype and genotype without losing the fundamentals of the breed," he said.

"For the first time, we have incorporated AuctionPlus, which will stream live at the sale for those who are unable to or do not wish to travel.

"You can watch the sale and purchase bulls from the comfort of your own home if need be.

"We look forward to catching up with everyone at the sale on June 24. In the meantime, we welcome any enquiries."

POWERFUL LINE-UP: The Turiroa Angus line-up this year will be eye-catching, and Lot 1 (pictured above right) —Turiroa Complete 18P250 — is a good example of what buyers will find. Three generations of the Powdrell family will celebrate 76 years of breeding pedigree Angus cattle at their on-farm auction. TANGIHAU Angus will be back on-farm again this bull sales season and studmaster and station manager Dean McHardy said this year it will be a sale like never before.

˜ e stud will welcome buyers and visitors for an auction starting at 9am on Monday June 22.

"Because of demand, we have decided to increase the number of bulls for sale going forward," Dean said.

In 2019, Tangihau Angus achieved the highest average for Angus bulls throughout Australasia, a record sale average of $20,913.

˜ is year, Tangihau Angus will o° er up 40 two-year bulls for sale.

"We aim to have an excess of 50 bulls on o° er in the coming years."

Dean said they will launch something new this year.

"We are excited to launch a new sale initiative whereby we will have a 'charity bull' on o° er, and all proceeds from the lot will be donated to our local Eastland Helicopter Rescue Trust.

"˜ e charity bull will be chosen on the day of sale and introduced prior to bidding."

˜ e herd has been shaping up to have a strong set of genetics, which the stud considers to be testament to strict culling procedures and robust management.

"We are preparing for online auctions as an alternative option to the annual bull sale.

"We will sell online via bidr and are looking into online auctions now.”

˜ e stud's on-farm sale complex hosts undercover seating overlooking the arena. Last year, the sale attracted a crowd of about 300, with plenty of onsite parking available.

"˜ e viewing pens are designed to give buyers the opportunity to inspect bulls in their own environment. ˜ is enables buyers to select bulls that are fi t for purpose and align with their own breeding strategy," Dean said.

Given the new travel restrictions during the Covid-19 pandemic, the prizes will now be two hampers, each valued at $2500 (not two travel vouchers as previously advertised).

"˜ e new prizes are of equivalent cash value to the prizes that were originally advertised. Terms and conditions can be found on our website and will also be printed in our bull catalogue."

Paddock viewings commence at 7am on the morning of the auction, and will also be available by appointment prior.

"˜ ere will be a hot drink and snack available before the sale, and a complimentary brunch o° ered afterwards.”

Tangihau is located at 119 Taumata Road, Rere, 45km west of Gisborne.

"˜ ose interested can register for a catalogue on the Tangihau Angus website www.tangihauangus.co.nz, or fi nd us on Facebook at Tangihauangus."

STRONG AGAIN: Tangihau Angus set an Australasian auction average record for Angus cattle last season with a great line-up. This year’s offering could test the record books again.

RANGATIRA Angus will celebrate 60 years of breeding top quality Registered Angus Cattle at their on-farm rising two-year-old bull sale on June 24.To mark the occasion, Charlie and Susie Dowding and all at Rangatira Angus Stud will present 60 of their bulls for sale by auction in their rostrum that morning.

“Over the past five decades, there have been many highlights and memorable occasions,” studmaster Charlie said.“This year, we are selling the bulls both live on-farm, and live online.“People will be able to bid for the bulls remotely because the whole sale will be filmed.”

Investing in quality geneticsCharlie said everyone at Rangatira Angus was very happy with how this year’s line-up have come through the season.“It is rewarding to see how our new sire, Turiroa Maverick, has bred and crossed with our Rangatira genetics.“His first sons are for sale throughout the catalogue this year and four of them are in the top six lots.”Maverick’s progeny have depth, plenty of meat, and are smooth, easy-going cattle, he said.“They are cattle for the hill country.”Rangatira Angus have always purchased and retained top sires to breed from.“We believe in investing in quality genetics for the future.“We purchased top priced New Zealand bulls, including Kaharau Outlander 632 in partnership with Turiroa Angus in 2018, whose sons will be for sale next year. Last year, Rangatira bought Tangihau Top Gun 436, whose calves will be born this year.”Charlie said selecting a dam was as important as selecting a sire.“When selecting sires and our own

heifers, we place huge emphasis and importance on the dam’s background. Rangatira dams are great mothers. The average weaning weight of this year’s sale bulls was 311kg.”All the stud’s bulls on offer have passed the Gold Standard Bull Fertility Soundness Evaluation, and all have been inspected for structural soundness and conformation by a New Zealand Angus Association Breed Inspector. “We cannot thank buyers, underbidders and stock agents enough for all the support they have given us over the past 60 years. “We are so grateful to the many amazing people who have helped us in so many ways on the farm, off the farm and on sale day,” Charlie said. “Last year we sold 57 bulls on sale day and it was absolutely thrilling to see seven of them sold to registered Angus studs throughout New Zealand.“Nearly half of the catalogue sold for $7000 or under, and this year we feel there will be bulls available again at the right price for all commercial buyers — the sale will be well worth the wait.”

LIKELY STAR: The team at Rangatira Angus are pleased with their line of bulls this year and, in particular, Lot 3 shows plenty of promise.

ANGUS Bull Week 2019 will be remembered as one of the best in terms of clearance, prices and of course, in setting an Australasian record.

The region's Angus studs from Turiroa near Wairoa to Ratanui, inland from Tolaga Bay, realised a total $4.16 million in sales last year.

The week was described as a resounding success, highlighted undoubtedly by the top price paid by Rangatira Angus at Muriwai for a bull from Tangihau Angus at Rere.

A cool $86,000 changed hands for the top-priced bull sold in New Zealand last year.

The other remarkable feature of 2019 was the Australasian record-high average

for Angus bulls sold at auction that Dean McHardy and the Tangihau team set at their sale — an average of $20,900 across 23 bulls sold.

As Dean said at the time, it was great for the stud to achieve a record like it. As another breeder put it — “the only stud that will ever beat it is Tangihau”.

The Johnson family from Orere Station at Pehiri debuted well to take out the Wonder Cup in the combined sale.

Ben and Kylie Johnson were thrilled with the win, and felt it gave their new stud ‘the tick of approval’.

They described it as "an unreal and amazing

feeling" and it will be fascinating to see what happens for them this coming sales season.

Studs like Tangihau, Ratanui and Kenhardt at Nuhaka built themselves sales rostrums and went for on-farm sales last season, and they were all rapt with the support they got selling their bulls ‘at home’.

Pat Watson came back into the picture last year from Waimata Angus and he and his bulls will be back again this year. Pat said he loved being a part of Bull Week again.

Initially there were concerns that there might have been too many up for grabs last season which might soften the market.

But that turned out not to be the case. They

were snapped up for consistent prices across the sales, and the new auction format over the three days worked a treat.

"Seamlessly," was how long-time auctioneer Bruce Orr put it.

"What great results," he said afterwards."It is huge confirmation — a further tick

of approval from the rest of New Zealand — for the continued quality of Gisborne beef genetics, irrespective of breeds."

The 2020 sales season looms as another cracking example of the power for the Tairawhiti economy generated by stud cattle — and the black cattle will lead the charge again.

WHAT A WEEK: The 2019 rising-two-year bull sales season was a cracker, and the sale of this particular Tangihau Angus bull to Rangatira Angus for $86,000 added more gloss to a splendid Bull Week. Tangihau studmaster Dean McHardy and Rangatira’s Charlie Dowding were pictured in the paddock with him. Picture supplied

Focus on functional cattleKENHARDT Angus at Nuhaka will

have a line-up of 42 rising two-year-old bulls for sale by auction on-farm later this month and the Crawshaws are pleased with how they look.

The family debuted on-farm last year in their new sales rostrum and it paid off.

They enjoyed a total clearance in their 2019 sale, 37 from 37, received a top price of $14,000 and received plenty of positive comments about their new sale facility.

Studmaster Grant Crawshaw said all this year's line-up have been semen tested and BVD-tested antigen negative and vaccinated.

"We had a good autumn on Kenhardt after a dry February and March.

"The bulls have been supplemented with baleage only."

Grant said he was particularly pleased with their Capitalist sons this year.

"Our homebred sires are producing good functional cattle that grow on, and our breeding focus remains firmly on producing sound cattle with balanced figures."

He said the stud will welcome any inquiries prior to sale day on June 24, with the sale under way from 12.30pm at the property in Nuhaka River Road.

Grant can be contacted on 027 686 7753 or 06 837 8881 (evenings) for any inquiries.

"We look forward to welcoming back our regular clients, and others who want to discover what Kenhardt has to offer."

Striving for consistency

THE Story family from Ratanui Angus will roll out the welcome mat again on-farm and they have been delighted with the quality stock they have to offer again this year.

The stud on the Tauwhareparae Road inland from Tolaga Bay will put up 29 fine young rising two-year-olds for sale by auction this season.

"The stock are looking good and are coming on at the moment," said studmaster Mel Story.

"It was very dry through February and March for us, but fortunately we had consistent rain at the right times, which has kept everything ticking along.

"The weather has been very mild lately and we have had some much-needed rain over the last couple of months, which has made a big difference.

"The country is green and looking good, grass is on the move now," Mel said.

This will be Ratanui's 30th annual Angus sale, part of a breeding programme spanning 65 years. The stud was established in 1955.

"We are delighted to be having our second on-farm sale in the Tauwhareparae Valley.

"Ratanui Angus continues to strive towards the ongoing development, breeding and selection of cattle best suited for this region and its hill country environment."

Nathan said the ongoing introduction of top quality genetics and sires predominantly sourced from leading East Coast studs has

seen their herd go from strength to strength."Each year we have watched the positive

progress of both our females going to the bull and R2 bulls going forward to auction.

"The ultimate aim is to breed bulls and females that will consistently produce quality progeny while having longevity and robust constitution.

He said the stud combines a strict culling and selection programme for both males and females with the endeavour to keep their breeding principles simple and balanced.

"Our main emphasis is on quality of type (structure, conformation, constitution, behaviour, fertility) and reproductive consistency while having a balanced range of EBV’s. Fertility is an absolute integral part of our herd performance selection criteria."

Ratanui MA cows consistently achieve 75-80 percent conception rates for one round of AI in October — clearly displaying their underlying natural fertility.

"Over the past five years, under careful selective mating and management, we have been calving two year heifers which, to date, has been very successful," Mel said.

The family wish all their existing clients and those who will become clients, all the very best for the coming season.

"We look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday, June 23."

GREAT LINE-UP: Ratanui Angus on the Tauwhareparae Road will have 29 young bulls in their on-farm sale later this month. These two, Ratanui 802 (Lot 15) below and Ratanui 844 (Lot 4) above, clearly demonstrate the quality that will be on offer. Pictures supplied

Exceeding expectationsNEWCOMERS to the stud cattle scene in the region, Ben and Kylie Johnson from Orere Angus made a big impact in their debut last year and they hope for more of the same in 2020.The stud will have 10 R2 bulls up for grabs in the Combined Sale at the Matawhero saleyards on June 22 at 12pm, with viewing from 10.30am."It feels like just yesterday that I was standing in the front of the packed rostrum accepting the Wonder Cup and fumbling through my first speech," Ben said."That was a big highlight for us, and hopefully there are many more to come."It has been a very satisfying year, firstly with a successful sale last year and watching this next line-up of bulls grow and exceed our expectations."With a kind winter and early spring, their cows thrived, Ben said."They produced another good crop of calves and have scanned exceptionally well with 98 percent conception over the mixed-age cows, and 94 percent for the yearling heifers (stud and commercial)."After an average East Coast summer came a dry autumn topped off by the hit of Covid-19, which affected us all in different ways, from a backlog at the freezing works, to saleyards shut down.'It meant we are all carrying a lot more stock into the winter, which is just starting to take its toll on our breeding stock."But on the bright side, being an essential industry, we were able to carry on trading

more or less as normal. With a bit of welcome rain, the country is looking a lot better and this has helped with the lift in the store market."Ben said this year’s bulls include the first of their Turihaua Hulk sons.'We are very pleased with the type and consistency that he has bred. His low birthweight, ease of calving, moderate mature cow weight and good milk EBV’s make him a perfect maternal sire."Hulk is leaving a good solid type, easy-moving and full of meat."A highlight for us is our Lot 1 Orere P1, a Hulk son out of an Alpine cow. He has an extra low birthweight and positive fats. P1 has been a standout right from the start. Weaning at 347kg, he holds himself well and always catches your eye."Another one to watch is Orere P2, out of a Springdale cow by Rangatira L131. Springdale 879 is by Braveheart and has bred well, her first calf (Springdale Thor 559) selling to stud, Dandaloo Angus."Moving forward, they will look to build a strong, sound fertile cow base that they can cross with different out-sires, Ben said."Our last year’s purchase was a Merchiston Steakhouse son, KayJay Steakhouse N24, which is another easy-going type with moderate birthweight and positive fats. We are looking forward to seeing his progeny born this spring."Prospective buyers are welcome for viewing at any time, Ben said.". . . we look forward to catching up with everyone at the sale."

BIG IMPACT: Ben and Kylie Johnson made a great first impression when their Orere Stud bulls debuted in the Combined Sale last year, so much so that they took home the Wonder Cup for the bull judged best in sale. They look strong again this year.

Producing premium bulls at TahaenuiCRICKLEWOOD Angus on

Tahaenui Station at Nuhaka will put up four rising-two-year-old premium bulls for sale alongside the Tangihau Angus line-up again this year.

The on-farm sale is scheduled for June 22, with the sale kicking off at 9.30am and viewing anytime from 7am.

"The bulls have been looking good all season due to good rainfall over summer, and are nice and quiet in the paddock," said stud manager Ben White.

"Compared to other parts of the country, we are pretty lucky in Nuhaka to have received constant rain, which has allowed us to feed the bulls sufficiently throughout the season."

Ben said the stud aims to produce positive impact bulls that are structurally sound with a great temperament and type.

"They are predominantly bred to run on the hills and are expected to do well on the steep hill country, which tests constitution and do-ability.

"I believe we have been able to achieve this within this year's line-up of stud bulls.

"We look forward to seeing you all at the sale."

Alpine and Waimata combine once more

THE Alpine Angus and Waimata Angus studs will be part of the 85th Gisborne Angus Combined Sale on Monday, June 22 at the Matawhero saleyards, and both have been pleased with their bulls’ development this season.

There will be 27 on offer in total, with 10 from Orere Angus, 10 from Waimata Angus, and seven from Alpine Angus.

"The bulls have come through the summer nicely, but autumn proved challenging with dry conditions and the Covid-19 pandemic, so it's pleasing to see them well ahead from last year," the Alpine and Waimata stud breeders said.

"Our breeding objectives are working well for us all.

"With the outlook positive — beef and lamb prices rising, grass growing and bull sales going ahead — we look forward to seeing you all at the Combined Sale after being in our own little bubble for so long.

"We hope to be holding the sale in the normal way, but there is a Plan B where all the Gisborne breeders will move back to the last week in July if necessary. But let’s hope it does not come to that."

The Alpine and Waimata studmasters — Steve Herries and Pat Watson — said they were quite proud of the line-up they will show this year.

"Our bulls show the discipline of a genuine breeding programme, focusing on four keys of real performance — profitability, efficiency, constitution and longevity.

"In a year where this drought is going to affect all of us in some way, there is going to be a lot of pressure to get the cows that we have left back in

calf," Steve said."One of the ways we can ensure a better

conception rate is by having each one of the bulls in the bull battery in top condition, and firing on all cylinders.

"Look carefully at each bull and make that objective decision."

Pre-inspections will be available at both studs. On sales day, the stock on offer can be viewed

from 10.30am, and the sale will start at 12pm after the Wonder Cup winner for 2020 has been decided.

by Andrew Cribb, East Coast Farm Vets

ONCE the hammer has fallen at auction, the bull belongs to you. How you handle him from then on will have a huge bearing on whether he will be a long-lasting member of your team or not.˜ e stressors that you place him under, the level of nutrition that he receives, in combination with several other factors, can have a signifi cant (positive or negative) eff ect on the eventual fertility of this animal.Give your trucking operator clear instructions of what you expect of them.Make sure they know what bulls can be hauled together. If bulls are coming from long distances, discuss where they can be rested o˛ the truck.Give all the details to the driver, including your name, contact details, delivery address (rapid number and road name), the tag number and brand of your new bulls — it is

not uncommon for bulls to be delivered to the wrong address. When a bull is relocated to a new environment, the bull is subjected to new viral, bacterial and parasitic challenges. ˜ is is unavoidable.˜ e key way to maintain a healthy immune system is to ensure these animals have high-quality nutrition (which can be a challenge at this time of the year), have had the appropriate animal health treatments (quarantine drench, lice treatment, BVD vaccination etc), and ensure that they establish new social groups quickly. Not adhering to these principles could have long-lasting negative e˛ ects on fertility. When the bulls arrive at your farm, let them settle in by leaving them in the yards overnight and observe how they react to their new home.Supply them with fresh water and good quality hay.

If fi ghting occurs, you might have to split them up, depending on how serious it is. Two bulls fi ghting is often less of a concern than three bulls fi ghting, as the third bull can often broadside one of the bulls locked in battle, which can result in serious injuries. If you have purchased only one bull, fi nd a mate or two for him immediately (this could be steers or quiet cows, rather than older sire bulls). If you have bought multiple bulls from a number of di˛ erent management groups or studs, it is often better to put them all together at once.Introducing new bulls into a mob one at a time can lead to the new bull being given a hard time by his contemporaries. While the bulls are still new to their environment, take time to “train” them.Make sure they are familiar with the yards and how they work.During this time, you can understand

your new bulls and work the bulls that are unsettled. Let them get used to you and how you handle stock — because it is likely that this will be di˛ erent from where they have originated.Lastly and perhaps most importantly, ask the question about Mycoplasma bovis. Are the bulls coming from a farm that has or is in close proximity to a farm that has tested positive for M.bovis? Do they, or do they have neighbours that, trade a lot of cattle? For a lot of high country stations, sire bulls are the only animals that are brought on to the property. If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you need to be wary about purchasing the animal. It is best to have that uncomfortable discussion now, rather than have an even more uncomfortable discussion with MPI later.

Tribute to a great stockman

One of the great stockmen and personalities of the region’s cattle industry will be missing from this year's Angus bull sales season.

Prince Rickard passed away earlier this year and he will be missed by many.

He worked for the Williams family and the Kaharau Stud for 55 years and made a massive contribution to the success of the stud.

"It was with deep and heartfelt sadness that we lost Prince on Friday, March 20 this year," Kaharau studmaster Penny Hoogerbrug said.

"n ot only was Prince a wonderful person, he was held in such high regard by so many

in the Angus industry, as an incredible studman and for his eye for stock.

"Many have sought his wise counsel and advice over the years, and he was a valued and dearly loved member of Kaharau.

"We, the Williams family, are indebted to the enormous contribution Prince and his wife Glennis made to the stud," Penny said.

"Family, rugby, dog trialling and stud cattle were his passions."

A full memorial service to celebrate Prince's life will follow at a later date.

STOCKMAN, HUSBAND, FATHER, GRANDFATHER AND FRIEND: Prince Rickard made a memorable mark on the cattle industry in this district for more than half a century. He was pictured with wife Glennis (top right); with Kaharau studmaster and great friend, the late Colin Williams, and Colin's daughter and current studmaster Penny Hoogerbrug (second from top).
