During the ‘09-’10 school year:
Of the nearly 7,100 students currently enrolled in Wauwatosa Schools, approximately 72% are Caucasian, 17.7% are African-American, 5% are Asian, 4.3% are Hispanic, and 1% are Native American.
Of the minority student population, 58.4% are Wauwatosa residents, while 41.6% are non-resident students.
Minority students account for 16.3% of all students who reside in Wauwatosa, compared to 4% in 1991.

Diversity LRP and Consortium
The consortium includes suburban north shore school districts in the Milwaukee and Cardinal Stritch University's Leadership Center. The consortium grew out of efforts with Whitefish Bay’s Parents Advocating for Cultural Equality and Educational Excellence (PACE3).

Diversity LRP and Consortium
Consortium districts shared similar needs for moving forward with diversity and inclusive practices: Community-building and collaboration with other suburban parents
and district personnel as well as higher education resources
Augmenting achievement data with additional quantitative and qualitative information about school climate, student engagement, and cultural competence
Engaging in quality educational development and leadership experiences around diversity
Including systems of support and sustainability within districts. Coaching.

Spring 2009 efforts in Wauwatosa:
Phyllis Richards—President of PACE3—and other PACE3 board members and Whitefish Bay parents present to Wauwatosa Superintendent Parent Network in March about their efforts with suburban diversity and schooling.
Consortium district superintendents help plan ‘09-’10 consortium activities
End-of-year consortium speaker and workshop at Cardinal Stritch: Dr. Gloria Ladson Billings (UW-Madison) and cultural competence Pushing Past the Achievement Gap. Attended by Diversity LRP team and selected administrators/teachers.

Spring 2009 efforts in Wauwatosa:
May and June of 2009 schools in the consortium—including Wauwatosa School District—elected to survey middle school and high school students regarding school engagement.
At the middle school level, students completed the Survey of Middle School Student Engagement developed by Dr. Tony Frontier (Cardinal Stritch University).
At the high school level, students completed a national survey, the Indiana University High School Survey of Student Engagement (HSSSE).
Invitation for consortium districts to attend June Sally Ride Academy keynote Dr. Rich Milner Ready or Not: Diversity in Education. Attended by Diversity LRP, DTLs, and district parent.

Summer 2009 efforts in Wauwatosa:
Engagement survey results returned and sent to secondary principals.
Wauwatosa hosts August opening year consortium speaker and workshop Dr. Barbara Love (University of Massachusetts-Amherst). Attended by Wauwatosa Diversity LRP, parents, and 8 additional administrators.

Fall 2009-Spring 2010: May/June focus groups at Wauwatosa West, Wauwatosa East, and
Alternative Program with nonwhite students facilitated by Thandeka Chapman and research team from UWM.
Goals of the study: to identify successful and unsuccessful relationships, events, and
policies in the schools. to identify resources and experiences that support students’ academic,
social, and emotional growth. to identify policies, events, school practices that are barriers to student
learning.

Fall 2009-Spring 2010: ‘10-’11 Planning at 3/5 workshop
One Building Leadership Team meeting during the '10-11 school year is dedicated to cultural competency
Explore professional development opportunity for credit with respect to cultural competency (i.e. partner with Wisconsin Education Innovations)
Work with HR department regarding application/interview/hiring
-Promote our district at job fair at historically black college
-Bring a cultural lens to other committees/planning

Continue to bring awareness to changes in nonwhite resident enrollment (i.e. challenging perceptions that nonwhite students/families are largely open enrollment/220)
Pursue "Alumni day" where nonwhite graduates/new college students talk with students about college
Utilize engagement data and qualitative focus group information with initiatives that support students (i.e. Student Bill of Rights; Positive Behavior Intervention Supports)

Spring 2010-Summer 2010:
Consortium school districts promote the Parent Sense of Community Survey for use during consortium work in ‘10-’11. Parents complete during the month of June.
Consortium school districts invited to attend July 12 Wisconsin Education Innovations Academy keynote speaker Dr. George Theoharis (Syracuse University)—The Schools Our Children Deserve: Creating Equitable and Excellent Schools for All.

Fall 2010: August 20th consortium event in Wauwatosa. Dr. Chapman and
Dr. Frontier to work with district teams regarding engagement and preliminary focus group information. Teams collaborate and refine action steps for ‘10-’11.
Consortium workshop at Cardinal Stritch facilitated by Dr. Cynthia Jew (California Lutheran University): Culturally Proficient Leadership: Embracing and Advocating for Equity and Inclusive Education StrategyAttended by district LRP Team as well as all district school social workers, school counselors, and school psychologists.
