OPENING HYMN – LSB 797

“Praise the Almighty”

1. Praise the Almighty, my soul, adore Him!

Yes, I will laud Him until death;

With songs and anthems I come before Him

As long as He allows me breath.

From Him my life and all things came;

Bless, O my soul, His holy name.

Alleluia, alleluia!

2. Trust not in rulers; they are but mortal;

Earthborn they are and soon decay.

Vain are their counsels at life’s last portal.

When the dark grave engulfs its prey.

Since Mortals can no help afford,

Place all your trust in Christ, our Lord.

Alleluia, alleluia!

3. Blessed, oh, blessed are they forever

Whose help is from the Lord Most High.

Whom from salvation can nothing sever

And who in hope to Christ draw nigh.

To all who trust in Him, our Lord

Will aid and counsel now afford.

Alleluia, alleluia!

Page 2: DIVINE SERVICE SETTING ONE - St. Peter Macomb · The widows and the fatherless. Alleluia, alleluia! ... renew us, and lead us so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your

4. Penitent sinners, for mercy crying,

Pardon and peace from Him obtain;

Ever the wants of the poor supplying,

Their faithful God He will remain.

He helps His children in distress,

The widows and the fatherless.

Alleluia, alleluia!

5. Praise, all you people, the name so holy

Of him who does such wondrous things!

All that has being, to praise Him solely,

With happy heart its amen sings.

Children of God, with angel host

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!

Alleluia, alleluia!

C: Amen.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

C: Amen.

C: But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and

cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination)

P: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.

C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have

sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what

we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not

loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal

punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us,

renew us, and lead us so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to

the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

P: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives

you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I

therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of

the † Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

KYRIE

pray to the Lord.

OLD TESTAMENT READING

Nehemiah 8:8-12

They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so

that the people understood what was being read. Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the

priest and teacher of the Law, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to

them all, “This day is holy to the LORD your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the

people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law. Nehemiah said, “Go

and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing

prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your

strength.” The Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be still, for this is a holy day. Do

not grieve.” Then all the people went away to eat and drink, to send portions of food and

to celebrate with great joy, because they now understood the words that had been made

known to them.

Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord.

People: Praise to You, O Christ.

EPISTLE READING

1 Thessalonians 5:11-18

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you,

who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in

love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. And we urge you, brothers and

sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the

weak, be patient with everyone. Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but

always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else. Rejoice always,

pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ

Jesus.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

ALLELUIA VERSE

Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go?

You have the words of eternal life.

Alleluia, alleluia.

HOLY GOSPEL

Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the thirteenth chapter.

People: Glory to You, O Lord.

Then Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he made his way to

Jerusalem. Someone asked him, “Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?” He said

to them, “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you,

will try to enter and will not be able to. Once the owner of the house gets up and closes

the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Sir, open the door for us.’ “But

he will answer, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’ “Then you will say, ‘We ate

and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’ “But he will reply, ‘I don’t know you

or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers!’ “There will be weeping

there, and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the

prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out. People will come from

east and west and north and south, and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom

of God. Indeed, there are those who are last who will be first, and first who will be last.”

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to You, O Christ.

APOSTLES’ CREED – Saturday

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ,

His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin

Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He

descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into

heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will

come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian

Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

Page 8: DIVINE SERVICE SETTING ONE - St. Peter Macomb · The widows and the fatherless. Alleluia, alleluia! ... renew us, and lead us so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your

NICENE CREED – Sunday

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth and of all

things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of

God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of

very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all

things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and

was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was

crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.

He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the

Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father.

And he will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose

kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together

is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy

Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge on Baptism for the remission of sins,

and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

SERMON HYMN – LSB 802

“Immortal, Invisible God Only Wise”

1. Immortal, invisible, God only wise,

In light inaccessible hid from our eyes,

Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,

Almighty, victorious, Thy great name we praise.

2. Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,

Nor wanting, nor wasting, Thou rulest in might;

Thy justice like mountains high soaring above

Thy clouds which are fountains

of goodness and love.

3. To all life Thou givest – to both great and small

In all life Thou livest, the true Life of all;

We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree

And wither and perish – but naught changes Thee.

Page 9: DIVINE SERVICE SETTING ONE - St. Peter Macomb · The widows and the fatherless. Alleluia, alleluia! ... renew us, and lead us so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your

4. Great Father of glory, pure Father of light,

Thine angels adore Thee, all veiling their sight;

All laud we would render: O help us to see

‘Tis only the splendor of light that hides Thee.

“Celebrating a Completed Goal”

Rev. Craig Meyer

SERMON OUTLINE

Celebrating a Completed Goal

Nehemiah 8:8-12

What or who and how do you celebrate when you complete a goal, reach an

objective, receive a blessing?

Celebrating a Completed Goal – Then

Nehemiah 8:1-3 - Ezra read the book of the law from daybreak until noon and then

all who were there listened attentively as he read it.

Nehemiah 8:6 – The people stood, worshiped, and bowed down.

Nehemiah 8:8-9 – The people wept when they heard the book of the law.

Nehemiah 8:10 – The people were told not to weep but to celebrate.

Nehemiah 8:11-12 – The people’s mourning turned to joy.

Celebrating a Competed Goal – Now

We worship the Triune God, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

Our worship flows from who He is and what God has done for us. (Romans 11:33-

36, 12:1)

We worship in God in corporate worship on Sunday and by reading and living out

His Word.

Our worship also includes living out our faith in all areas of our lives. (Romans

12:9-18, Colossians 3:17)

“The joy of the Lord is your strength”

OFFERING

The giving of our gifts to the Lord is an act of worship.

OFFERTORY

What shall I render to the Lord

For all His benefits to me?

I will offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving

And will call on the name of the Lord

I will take the cup of salvation

and will call on the name of the Lord.

I will pay my vows to the Lord now

in the presence of all His people,

in the courts of the Lord’s house,

in the midst of you, O Jerusalem.

Our oneness in the Lord?

You satisfy the hungry heart

The bread of life to eat.

Whose robe is the light, whose canopy space;

His chariots of wrath the deep thunder clouds form,

And dark is His path on the wings of the storm.

In Thee do we trust, nor find Thee to fail.
