Hey  my  Beautiful  Orcas!    I  hope  that  you've  all  been  having  a  magical  summer  this  year  and  will  make  the  best  of  these  last  few  days  as  it  comes  to  an  end.  It  was  great  to  see  many  of  you  at  our  2011-­2012  Officer  Training  Conference  with  42  East.  The  Narwhals  loved  meeting  all  of  you  and  as  the  Simi  Val-­ley  president  said  to  me,  "All  of  you  Orcas  are  so  cute!"  And  you  really  are.  We  just  need  to  work  on  our  spirit  because  the  Narwhals  beat  us  bad.    Speaking  of  spirit,  Fall  Rally  South  is  coming  up!  To  prepare  for  this  big  event  as  early  as  possi-­ble,  our  September  DCM  will  include  activities  to  get  you  all  pumped  up  and  ready  to  go.  That  is  only  a  small  part  of  the  fun  we'll  be  having,  however.  Our  September  Division  Council  Meet-­ing  will  also  include  a  crazy  water  balloon  fight  that  you  all  will  find  totally  unexpected.  Just  please  make  sure  you  wear  a  white  shirt  that  you  don't  mind  getting  messy!    Aside  from  that,  this  newsletter  also  includes  short  biographies  as  well  as  a  farewell  message  from  our  2010-­2012  Lieutenant  Governor,  Tigran  Parsadanyan.  Then  buckle  up  for  a  ride  as  you  have  a  flash  back  of  our  OTC  and  July  DCM.  What  else  is  there?  Much  more.    Lastly,  with  the  school  year  starting  soon,  we  all  know  what  that  means  -­  club  day  and  first  meet-­ings.  Officers,  as  you  go  through  this  issue  you  will  find  tips  and  tricks  for  these  big  days.  They  have  a  huge  impact  on  the  rest  of  your  year  so  plan  well  and  think  about  what  your  possible  members  will  be  attracted  by!  Also  remember  that  the  members'  suggestions  and  opinions  are  important  since  you  are  serving  THEM!  Good  luck  to  all  of  you  this  year!           Keep  this  in  mind.  When  things  get  rough,  just  keep  on  swimming.

Dear  Key  Clubbers,  or  in  better  words,  our  high  school's  very  own  shin-­ing  stars.  High  school  has  been  an  interesting  learning  experience  that  I  will  never  

every  little  detail  of  the  entire  picture.       Key  club  and  my  involvement  in  school  activities  played  a  big  role  in  who  I  am  today  and  what  kind  of  a  leader  I  continue  to  be  in  my  present  and  future.  Not  only  has  it  taught  me  right  from  wrong,  integrity,  honesty,  responsibility  but  it  has  taught  me  that  there  is  more  meaning  to  life  then  our  very  own  neighborhood.  That  is  only  the  beginning;  my  advice  to  all  of  you  is  to  think  global,  as  big  as  you  possibly  can.       Do  not  fear  that  your  goals  will  crumble,  push  yourself  as  far  as  mentally  and  physically  possible  to  achieve  incredible  heights.  We  are  the  future  of  not  only  our  nation,  but  of  our  global  humanity  so  make  your  predecessors  proud.  :]  Long  live  Bulldogs!  (Even  though  I  am  an  Aztec  now).

   So  who  am  I?  My  name  is  Linda  Taing,  and  I  will  be  serving  all  of  you  in  our  2011-­12  Key  Club  year  as  your  Lieutenant  Governor.  I'm  currently  an  upcoming  junior  at  Buena  High  School,  home  of  the  Bulldogs.  Although  I  have  been  at  Buena  since  freshman  year,  Key  Club  didn't  become  a  part  of  my  life  until  the  beginning  of  my  sophomore  year.  At  first,  Key  Club  only  seemed  like  a  community  service  group  to  me.    But  as  time  went  on  and  I  attended  more  events,  it  became  so  much  more.  I  became  so  passionate  in  helping  others  and  realizing  that  I  am  making  a  difference.  And  then  when  I  attended  Fall  Rally  South,  the  spirit  got  me  going.  It's  such  a  nice  feeling  to  be  around  Key  Clubbers  who  have  the  same  passion  as  you  and  are  cheering  for  the  club  we  all  love.  The  two  greatest  things  about  Key  Club:  The  feeling  when  you  help  others  and  the  excitement  when  everyone  cheers.      Key  Club  isn't  the  only  thing  I  love,  though.  I  also  enjoy  baking,  drawing,  and  listening  to  music.  Singing  and  dancing  have  been  some  things  I've  always  wanted  to  do  but  sadly,  I  don't  have  that  kind  of  talent.  But  it's  okay.  I  have  friends  who  do  that  for  me.  Besides  my  hobbies,  I'm  also  a  pretty  good  student  in  school.  I  try  to  maintain  my  grades  at  all  A's.  During  my  sophomore  year,  I  wasn't  too  involved  in  clubs  but  in  the  upcoming  year  I'm  planning  to  join  a  few  more.      I  really  look  forward  to  meeting  each  and  every  one  of  you  in  the  near  future  and  hopefully  we  will  create  a  strong  friendship!  I  don't  want  to  be  thought  of  just  as  your  Lt.  Governor,  I  also  want  to  be  your  friend.  However,  I'm  still  here  to  serve  YOU!  Please  enjoy  the  rest  of  your  summer  everyone  and  remember  to  encourage  your  friends  to  join  Key  Club  as  well!                                             Sincerely,

Hello  I'm  April  Sky  Zavala,    I  am  the  LTG's  Executive  Assistant.  This  will  be  my  second  year  in  Key  Club,  I  love  

very  motivating  inside  and  outside  of  school.    This  year  I  hope  to  help  Linda  reach  out  to  all  our  district  schools  and  pull  them  in  to  make  our  club  family  closer  by  helping  Linda  with  fundraisers  and    socials  and  other  fun.    I  am  planning  on  doing  my  very  best  with  this  position  so  I  can  have  a  glimpse  at  LTG  life  and  can  prepare  myself  for  next  year  :)       Sincerely,

Dear  Orcas,      senior  taking  5  AP  classes.  I  am  very  dedicated  to  my  education  and  to  Key  Club.  At  the  current  time  I  am  not  in  any  sports  at  school,  but  I  am  an  avid  surfer.  My  friends  and  I  got  into  key  club  last  year  and  we  have  loved  it  since  the  first  day.     My  goals  for  the  club  are  simple.  I  would  like  for  a  better  unified  club.  The  last  few  years  it  seems  that  not  everyone  has  gotten  into  it  and  become  close  friends.  This  year  I  look  to  change  that.  I  have  made  many  new  friends  in  Key  Club  and  wish  to  help  others  experience  the  same.  I  am  looking  to  make  the  members  more  excited  and  dedicated  to  the  club.  Our  events  have  been  fun,  but  I  want  a  larger  turn  out  and  I  plan  on  that  occurring.       My  fellow  officers  and  I  are  up  to  any  challenge  that  we  arrive  at.  There  is  nothing  we  cannot  overcome.  We  are  all  dedicated  and  pumped  for  the  New  Year!         Sincerely,

 Hello  D42W  Key  Clubbers!    I'm  Lina  Partida,  a  junior  at  Santa  Paula  High  School,  and  I'm  Santa  Paula's  Key  Club  President  for  2011-­12.  First  off,  I  love  Key  Club!  I  joined  the  club  this  last  school  year  and  pretty  much,  I've  become  devoted  to  this  great  organization.  Even  with  my  busy  schedule  of  soccer,  AP  courses  and  VC  classes,  I  still  make  Key  Club  my  top  priority.    At  the  start  of  my  sophomore  year,  I  knew  that  I  had  to  get  involved  with  clubs  since  all  I  had  done  freshman  year  was  soccer.  One  of  the  clubs  I  chose  to  join  was  Key  Club,  of  course,  due  to  the  convenience  of  my  friends  being  in  it.  Thanks  to  those  friends,  I  also  got  a  feel  for  what  goes  on  behind  all  the  meetings  and  events  since  they  were  officers.  From  this  knowledge  I  knew  that  I  definitely  wanted  to  run  for  an  officer  po-­sition  for  the  following  year.  I  felt  like  I  was  a  good  candidate  for  president,  so  I  ran  and  I  luckily  won.      For  this  new  year,  I'm  just  really  looking  forward  to  emphasizing  the  great  benefits  of  community  service  to  not  only  our  community  but  to  ourselves.  I  kind  of  speak  for  everyone  when  I  say  how  great  it  feels  to  help  

that  help  others.  Another  thing  I'm  looking  forward  to  this  year  is  watching  our  division  go  from  ruins  to  becoming  a  big  brotherhood,  thanks  to  all  of  Linda's  efforts  including  all  our  own  efforts  as  well.    On  that  note,  I  hope  all  of  you  take  pride  in  your  clubs  as  much  as  I  do.  I  love  Key  Club  and  I'm  pretty  sure  no  other  club  can  compare  to  the  great  benefits  we  earn  through  community  service.  See  you  all  this  new  year!             Sincerely,

 Dear  Orcas,    My  name  is  Krisha  Algoso,  and  I  am  a  junior  at  Pacifica  High  School.  Although  my  

dent.  I  have  been  a  Key  Club  member  for  two  years,  and  in  my  tenure  of  being  an  ac-­tive  member,  I  enjoyed  volunteering  at  the  Breakfast  with  Santa  event  and  the  Rose  Parade  Float  Set-­Up  the  most.    As  Key  Club  president,  I  understand  a  great  deal  of  time,  effort,  and  responsibility  comes  with  such  a  task,  but  I  am  willing  to  commit  to  the  club  and  represent  Pacifica  

past  two  years  as  a  club  member,  Key  Club  meetings  were  merely  informational.  This  year,  I  want  to  present  information  in  a  lively  manner  and  make  meetings  more  inter-­active  between  the  board  and  its  members.  With  this,  I  hope  my  contributions  to  the  club  will  bring  satisfaction  to  many.

       Dear  Division  42  West,      Welcome  to  my  world:  the  busy  life  of  Ventura  High  School  Senior  Sky  Johnson.  I  take  on  a  lot  of  work,  between  all  my  A.P.  courses,  extra  curricular  activities,  and  living  on  a  small  farm,  but  I  en-­joy  every  minute  of  it.  I  support  environmental  conservation  (how  could  I  not,  being  born  on  Earth  Day  and  boasting  a  name  like  Sky?)  and  human  rights.  I  love  writing  and  poetry,  and  music.  I  play  bass  clarinet  in  my  high  school's  wind  ensemble,  which  is  something  that  I  love.      I've  been  involved  with  Kiwanis  programs  since  sixth  grade,  starting  with  Builders  Club  and  pro-­gressing  to  Key  Club.  I  served  one  year  as  a  freshman  representative  and  two  years  as  editor  on  my  Key  Club's  board,  and  this  year  will  mark  my  fourth  year  as  a  board  member  and  I  couldn't  be  hap-­pier.  I  first  got  involved  because  I  was  looking  for  a  way  to  connect  with  others  while  simultaneous-­ly  giving  back  to  my  own  community.  Volunteering  makes  me  feel  good  and  brings  a  smile  not  on-­ly  to  my  face,  but  to  my  community's.  I  volunteer  because  it  is  something  that  I  love  to  do-­  it's  a  passion  that  I  embrace  and  would  even  say  it  defines  me  as  a  person.      Each  year,  my  club  puts  on  a  few  annual  events.  We  go  Christmas  Caroling  each  year  at  the  Ventu-­ra  Convalescent  Hospital,  put  on  a  Senior  Citizen  Prom,  and  participate  on  a  team  for  Relay  for  

Life.  This  year,  I  hope  to  have  more  big  projects  that  will  hope-­fully  turn  into  annual  events  in  our  Key  Club's  history.  I  look  forward  to  leading  our  club  to  new  heights,  and  bringing  our  home  club  closer  together  as  a  family.         Sincerely,

Dear  Key  Club,      Hello!  My  name  is  Jessica  "Jessie"  Madlangsakay  (please  excuse  how  long  my  last  name  is,  it  means  "people  who  ride"  in  Tagalog/Filipino).  I  am  17  years  old  and  I  am  senior  in  high  school  attending  Channel  Islands.  Besides  taking  on  the  occupation  of  student,  I  am  a  fellow  tennis  player  and  a  pianist  on  the  side.    Motto:  "The  only  thing  that  beats  luck  is  hard  work."  -­  my  mom,  Olive  Madlangsakay    For  my  aspirations  in  Key  Club,  I  strive  to  create  a  more  unified  group  of  Channel  Islands'  Key  Clubbers  so  that  the  communication,  dedication,  and  work  becomes  effortless  to  point  that  it  benefits  community  that  we  serve.    In  development  of  2011-­2012  CIHS  Key  Club,  we're  creating  committees  such  as  Technology,  Public  Relations,  Membership  Development,  and  more  to  generate  an  efficient  circulation  of  activity.  We're  currently  searching  new  methods  in  fundraising  to  increase  profit  to  the  club  and  focusing  on  some  projects  that  our  club  can  support.  In  addition,  we're  planning  to  incorporate  the  ideas  and  innovations  from  other  Key  Clubs  in  our  area  so  that  the  job  can  only  be  done  correctly  but  in  sync  with  what  other  Key  Clubs  have  accomplished.    As  I  have  stated  above  what  I  intend  to  achieve  as  Key  Club  President,  I  also  want  to  make  a  change  in  the  club  that  it  will  stick  even  after  my  fellow  officers  have  finished  their  terms.    After  seeing  other  school  Key  Clubs  from  our  division  and  district,  it  puts  a  lot  into  perspective  and  opens  a  lot  opportunity  for  growth  when  seeing  how  much  energy  and  hard  work  is  witnessed  from  these  individuals  [from  other  schools].  I  may  be  new  to  this  term,  but  that  holds  no  excuse  to  what  I  have  to  accomplish  within  my  term  as  president  and  the  vision  that  you  want  to  make  a  reality  through  your  club  and  its  fellow  members  (something  that  my  LTG  Division  42  West  once  men-­tioned  to  me,  thank  you  for  the  inspiration,  Linda!  :D).  In  other  words,  I'll  do  what  I  can  to  accomplish  the  "vision".    This  all  I  have  to  say  about  who  I  am.  Briefly...

Dear  Key  Club,       My  name  is  Brandon  Rominger.  I  am  currently  a  senior  at  St.  Bonaventure.  This  past  year  I  was  elected  as  president  of  the  Key  Club.  The  Key  Club  is  a  great  organization  that  raises  money  and  promotes  community  service  while  making  it  fun.       This  year  I  am  planning  on  making  the  Key  Club  more  involved  in  my  school.  Last  year  we  did  a  few  fund  raisers  that  all  did  well,  but  everyone  seemed  to  enjoy  running  a  5k  the  most.  We  plan  on  running  many  more  throughout  the  year.       I  joined  the  Key  Club  because  it  stood  out  most  to  me  because  of  its  aspirations.  I  plan  on  making  it  some-­thing  everyone  can  participate  in  and  have  a  great  time.  Besides  from  key  club,  I  am  the  kicker  for  our  football  team  and  striker  for  the  soccer  team.         Sincerely,

Dear  Division  42  West  Orcas,    

-­12  Division  News  Editor.  I  am  very  glad  I  stumbled  upon  this  position  through  Linda  because  it  is  a  position  that  is  very  fun  despite  its  level  of  responsibility.  So,  you  may  won-­

ter  that  goes  out  to  the  six  schools  in  our  division  once  a  month.  This  year  I  hope  to  bring  our  division  closer  to-­gether  by  way  of  this  newsletter  and  to  help  make  Key  Club  something  that  everybody  wants  to  be  involved  in.      As  well  as  my  position  as  Key  Club  Division  News  Editor,  I  participate  in  many  other  activities.  This  year  will  be  my  

-­President,  my  second  year  in  CSF,  my  first  year  of  three  with  a  chair  position  in  Interact  (the  Rotary  equivalent  to  Key  Club),  my  third  year  in  German  Club,  and  my  

school  years,  and  this  is  most  likely  going  to  be  true  with  my  three  AP  classes,  my  online  college  course,  and  my  zero  period  German  3  class,  plus  all  of  the  aforementioned  interests.  I  also  play  piano  for  personal  pleasure,  with  lessons  once  a  week,  and  I  try  to  appreciate  all  music  and  art.      In  my  opinion,  the  greatest  community  service  is  preserving  our  environment  because,  quite  frankly,  the  elderly  or  

fectly  eco-­friendly,  but  I  do  simple  things  that  make  a  difference,  things  as  simple  as  recycling,  being  a  vegetarian,  bringing  a  reusable  bottle  or  bag,  or  growing  a  garden.  I  believe  that  community  service  should  always  be  environ-­mentally-­conscious  since  it  is  rather  counter-­productive  to  help  somebody  at  the  cost  of  destroying  our  unique  eco-­system.      

that  has  no  parallel,  it  makes  you  feel  good  beyond  explanation.  And  to  make  the  community  service  work  even  bet-­ter,  we  are  lucky  enough  to  get  awesome  people  to  share  the  goodness  and  memories  with.  I  am  greatly  looking  for-­

July Division Council Meeting

T he  July  DCM,  short  for  Division  Coun-­cil  Meeting,  was  held  on  July  31st  at  Ar-­

royo  Verde  Park  in  Ventura.  We  were  lucky  enough  to  have  guests  from  our  neighboring  division,  the  D42E  Narwhals.  Our  very  own  Region  10  Advisor  Mike  Van  Etten  and  his  wife  attended;  they  even  made  us  food!  We  sat  on  blankets  and  ate  hot  dogs,  hamburgers,  grilled  cheeses,  and  chips  as  we  social-­ized.  Along  with  the  amazing  food  we  played  several  fun  ice  breaker  games  including  the  well-­known  Ninja  and  The  Human  Knot.  After  the  icebreakers,  people  took  up  small  games  of  football,  volleyball,  Frisbee,  and  Bop-­hit.  At  the  meeting  Linda  took  roll  call,  and  each  president  that  attended  told  of  their  plans  for  the  upcoming  year.  Next  we  discussed  the  OTC  and  finalized  our  colors  as  being  black,  white,  and  teal.  We  also  discussed  the  deadline  for  our  Division  Shirt  submissions  which  we  will  be  voting  on  short-­ly.  It  was  a  blast,  and  Linda  and  I  hope  to  see  you  all  again  at  our  September  DCM/Water  Balloon  Fight  on  the  24th  of  September!    

 

 

  The  East  Meets  West  Officer  Training  Conference,  or  OTC  for  short,  was  a  great  event  where  Di-­visions  42  East  and  West  gathered  to  learn  about  Key  Club,  leadership,  and  character.  It  was  held  on  Au-­gust  13th  at  the  Boys  and  Girls  Club  of  Conejo/Las  Virgines,  and  there  was  a  stunning  turnout!  The  of-­ficers,  ranging  from  secretaries  and  assistants  to  presidents  and  Lieutenant  Governors,  attended  work-­shops  to  learn  more  about  their  positions  and  to  reach  out  to  others  in  their  own  field.           At  the  OTC,  both  D42W  and  D42E  held  their  August  DCMs.  After  roll  call  at  our  DCM,  each  president  in  attendance  told  of  his  or  her  plans  for  Club  Day.  Again  we  discussed  the  Division  Shirt  sub-­

nominations  and  the  September  DCM/Water  Balloon  Fight  were  also  mentioned.  We  played  an  especial-­ly  heart-­warming  game  at  the  end  of  the  conference  called  Love  Tap.  Basically  everyone  got  in  a  large  cir-­cle  and  closed  their  eyes.  After  this  the  LTGs  called  up  a  handful  of  people  to  tap  the  heads  of  the  people  

      This  conference  was  well  worth  the  $8.00  as  we  not  only  got  pizza,  chips,  and  drinks,  but  we  gained  friendships,  skills,  and  memories  that  will  stick  with  us  forever.

Possible  disadvantages  from  not  receiving  a  certain  amount  of  points:  -­For  events  such  as  Fall  Rally,  DCON,  ICON,  etc.  Clubs  may  not  be  able  to  participate  if  they  do  not  have  the  required  amount  of  points  -­More  thought  will  be  given  to  the  idea  above  to  ensure  that  mem-­bers  are  active  in  their  club  if  they  would  like  to  participate  in  big-­ger,  more  fun  events.

Club Day/First Meeting Tips and Tricks

Club  Day  tips:  -­Create  a  fake  long  line:  Gets  students  curious  -­Pass  out  free  snacks  to  those  who  sign  up    First  Meeting  tips:  -­Print  out  small  cards  to  have  placed  on  each  desk  in  the  Freshman  English  classes:  Invite  them  to  your  first  Key  Club  meeting  -­Make  it  fun.  That  is  when  the  most  faces  will  be  seen  so  get  them  interested  to  come  back  -­Make  sure  that  the  members  are  aware  that  it  is  still  a  community  service  group  -­Introduce  fun  events  such  as  Fall  Rally,  DCON,  Rose  Parade  Float  Decorating,  etc.
