Candles called diyas were lit by everyone who wanted to welcome them home and to
celebrate their triumph over the evil demons. For Diwali today, Hindus still put out diyas on their windowsills to remind them of the power of good over evil. It
shows that even a small light makes the darkness disappear.
Do you remember the story of Rama and
Sita?

The word ‘Diwali’ comes from the Sanskrit word ‘deepavali’. ‘Deepa’ means light and ‘avali’ means
row. In other words, ‘Diwali’ means ‘row of lights’. This is why it is known as the Festival of Lights.
Traditionally, diyas are made from clay and have a wick inserted into oil. Some can have very intricate
artwork on them. Others can be very simple.
