Jeddah excitedly ushers in Eid Al-Fitr and Saudi National Day this month! With so many festivities to choose from, let Destination Jeddah highlight some of the special events

to look forward to as well as take you down memory lane as we glimpse Eid through the eyes of Jeddah’s children. Eid is a time to treasure with your friends and family, although we miss our loved ones who are far away during this special time…we also give thanks for all the blessings of the past month of fasting and prayerful contemplation.

Our Eid Al-Fitr holiday gives way to a fun-filled season of family visits, delicious feasts, and hopefully some quiet moments as well. Whether you’re entertaining at home or enjoying meals at a relative’s house, you’ll find plenty of fashion ideas beginning on p.36. If sand dune bashing is more your style, then our Explore KSA article about Jeddah’s favorite sand dune day-trip will help you stay safe while you enjoy the exciting experi-ence.

Try a new restaurant for brunch or return to a Saudi favorite – wherever you go, you’ll be treated to some of the city’s finest cuisine. Perhaps this Eid is the time to sample some of Jeddah’s local food scene by taking the advice of our two food experts, Rashed Islam and Chef Yasser Jad on p.58. Restaurants will be bustling during this season, so make sure you plan ahead with reserva-tions where necessary.

Wishing all of our readers “Kul a’am wa antum bikhair” (May each year be full of goodness)

Eid Mubarak!

Reader’s Feedback

Sulafa Abudawood Eid has always been about the Eid prayer, 1st day’s breakfast, visiting relatives, eadiyah and the beach! After praying we choose a great place for breakfast or stay in at my grandparents. Then visit mom’s relatives one by one, her aunts, uncles and cousins. We live on juices, coffee, chocolates, sweets and maybe a fast food meal on the way back home. On the 2nd day, we expect all our relatives to come visit. The 3rd day, we visit dad’s relatives. We usually can’t wait for the 4th day to come, to go to the beach. And that’s about it =) May you all have a blessed month!

Deema The best part of my Eid is when we go to the Eid Prayer in the morning and meet all of my aunts and cousins in the mosque. While waiting for the prayer, we talk, laugh and enjoy the scene of the little girls in dresses and little boys in thobes giving and receiving candy. It just feels so warm and cozy!

Faigah My favorite memory is the “Takbeer” which is the praising of Allah that mosques perform after the Fajir prayer and until the Eid prayer on the 1st day of Eid. It brings peace to my soul listening to it all around the city.

Dear DJ,I have read your latest issue, June, which had a piece on sports in Jeddah. Most of the sports mentioned were for men. I have lived in Jeddah my whole life, and I would love to know places in Jeddah where a woman can ride her bicycle freely and walk confidently without being harassed or bothered. Looking forward to your reply. Sincerely, Jawaher Walid

To the Editor:Why do we have to pay for your excellent City Insight guide in a major supermarket chain even though it is free in many of your other stockists? Kind regards,Brenda, a happy expat from Scotland living and working in Jeddah

DJ received so many inquiries about the lovely table settings in our Aug. issue! We must thank our hostess Majdah Abdul Shakour for her gracious hospitality.

Dear Brenda,We’re only able to provide limited quantities of Destination Jeddah free of charge to restaurants & shops around Jeddah, but you can always be assured of finding it at Danube.

The DJ TeamDear Jawaher,The only places we can think of for ladies bicycle riding are the Durrat Al Arous Resort, private compounds, or the stationary bike at your local gym. Hope that helps you – don’t give up your quest! The DJ Team

Hass Dennaoui This Ramadan will be special for me. Simply thanking God for all the blessings. He has granted me & remembering the soul of my father, may he rest in peace. God Bless. Salam

Ulfat N.A its all about the money nowdays lol ,we see family, eat sweets, have BF and wear new clothes on daily or weekly basis but we don’t get 3eedya except at 3eed al fitr.

The Buttons boutique in Ana Special Mall was inadvertently misidentified as Niyaah boutique in Issue 19 – the DJ Team regrets the error.

Dear Destination Jeddah,I’ve lived in London for over 30 years & I think your magazine is wonderful. It’s useful & informative - well done! It’s the best English publication I’ve come across in Jeddah (I’ve been a frequent visitor to KSA for the past 20 years.)Sincerely,Safia B.

POLL OF THE MONTH

Next Month’s Question:Q: If you found out you have a history of cancer in the family, how would that affect your lifestyle?

Q: What’s your favorite part of Eid?

How often is your car washed? Your lawn watered? Your tap turned off while you brush your teeth? If you answered ‘Every day’ to the first two questions, you’re in the majority of Jeddahwi residents who remain woefully ignorant about the consequences of their daily actions. But if you’re in the minority who actually turn off the water while they brush their teeth or shampoo their hair – congratulations! Saudi Arabia is the 3rd highest consumer of water in the world (after the US & Canada). We all need to do our part to reduce water wastage on a daily basis – would you prefer to have a dusty car and food on your plate…or a sparkling clean car and an empty plate?

Pringles has stepped up the Ramadan spirit this year by organizing and sponsoring many activities for charity organizations. Pringles is manning a charity kiosk in the Red Sea Mall in the shape of a glass house. People are encouraged to donate children’s gifts to the glass house, whether they’re new or second hand items. A wrapping expert will beautifully gift-wrap the presents free of charge. Children can write their Eid wishes to the gift recipient. These lovely Eid presents will be presented at the end of Ramadan to the orphans of Al-Ber Organization. Pringles is also handing out 480 Iftar meals and providing entertainment zone access during Ramadan for 40 orphans in Al-Nawras restaurant, Jeddah and Golden Tulip Hotel, Riyadh for 6 days.

Go Green on Saudi National Day!September 23, 2010 is Saudi National Day. Ok, you probably already knew that...but did you know that last year, many stores offered 50% discounts on ANY green item? DJ was thrilled to learn about this exciting, yet little known fact! So show your patriotic spirit - paint your face green, sport a green afro, and stock up on green apparel (apparently the discount was given on most items of clothing that had even the teeniest bit of green in them.) We sincerely hope this discount will be repeated (Jeddah stores – are you listening?) So this National Day, get out there and shop ‘til you drop! But as far as DJ knows, this sale is limited to apparel only, so if you’re trying to get 50% off on that green Mercedes, you probably won’t have too much success, sorry. (But if you are successful - we want to know about it so we can line up outside the Mercedes showroom for next National Day!)

Eid! It’s

Holidays are often the highlight of the year. A time to relax and unwind from the stresses of daily life, we all look forward to them. Although we may overindulge in good food, gift-giving, and extended family time – it’s still a wonderful way to break up the daily routine of school and work. In terms of religious holidays, Muslims are fortunate to have two major celebrations each year; Eid al-Fitr, which comes at the end of Ramadan, and Eid al-Adha, which marks the completion of Hajj. Depending upon the sighting of the new moon to herald the beginning of the next month according to the Islamic lunar calendar, Eid al-Fitr will probably begin on September 10, 2010. So get ready for four full days of fun & festivities – here’s what to expect:

Most Muslims, both men and women, in Jeddah will make it a point to attend the Eid prayer in congregation at their local mosque. Since prayers customarily begin at 7am, don’t be surprised to see the traffic piling up at this early hour! Mosques will be full to overflowing – many people will pray on the streets and pavements outside, yet the air of thankfulness and gratitude which swirls throughout the city on Eid will erase any feelings of hardship. Some people say that

By Dilara HafizThe 411 on the Islamic Holiday

Eid prayers should be observed in the open air, while others prefer the air-conditioned comfort. Men will be attired in new, pristine white thobes, and the women may display new abayas, while their festive Eid clothes remain hidden from the public eye underneath their abayas, only to be revealed in the privacy of family homes. The elusively mysterious scent of oud will perfume the air around the men, reminiscent of bygone days prior to designer label scents.

Upon the completion of prayers, everyone will turn to their neighbor and enthusiastically bestow Eid greetings in the form of a series of symbolic kisses. Now this topic could be expanded into an entire book, for depending upon one’s ethnicity, the order and number of kisses vary from country to country. Suffice to say, most Saudis will air-kiss once to the left, followed by two more quick air-kisses in succession to the right. After Eid greetings have been exchanged with the surrounding people, most people gather at the home of the elders of the family for a celebratory breakfast/brunch, followed either by a long nap or more visiting amongst family members. Lately, it’s become popular to have breakfast out - some hotels transform their wedding halls into a huge dining buffet. It’s

a unique experience to begin the holiday with an Eid breakfast and see all the dressed up people, but it usually starts around 7:30am, and all the popular restaurants will be packed, so make reservations in advance. People then venture out in the evenings for dinners in restaurants, dinners at family or friend’s houses, and yet more Eid visiting.

Repeat these activities for the next 3 days (other than the morning Eid prayers, of course) and that sums up a typical Jeddahwi’s Eid! Some people make day trips to the beach or surrounding tourist sites, but in general, Eid is a family-focused holiday where people are genuinely grateful for completing the more spiritually and physically demanding month of Ramadan.

Saudi Style

Your Eid is spent with family. Your days are full of festivities. You stay up till 3am & sleep till noon. You wear new clothes.

You give & receive Eideyah! You run frantically from one relative’s house to the other. You consume enough chocolate to put Switzerland to shame.

You celebrate for 4 days straight!

Visitor Style

Your Eid is spent trying to be ‘adopted’ by a Saudi family. You wander the malls & return to work early. You wake up at your regular time (7am), watch satellite TV all day, & try to get invited to some Eid parties. You wear regular clothes.

Eideyah? What’s Eideyah?

You sit down, relax, & enjoy the day off.

Is that where all the chocolate has gone???

You merrily join in the Eid celebrations – how often will you spend Eid in Saudi?

Celebrating Eid… Saudi Style vs Visitor Style

Dubai’s Ibn Battuta Mall may have a reconstruction of Al-Jazari’s famous 13th century Elephant Clock, but Makkah now has the world’s largest clock tower housed in the world’s 2nd tallest building! Towering 577m over the Haram, the Royal Makkah Clock Tower, which began ticking during the beginning of Ramadan, is the largest clock tower ever built. The actual clock has four faces emblazoned with the Saudi emblem of the two crossed swords and a palm tree. Each face is six times larger in diameter than the iconic face of London’s Big Ben and its spire is topped with a 75-foot wide golden crescent moon. Five times a day, 21,000 green and white LED bulbs flash as a visual prayer time announcement visible from up to 30km away. Over 2 million LED lights illuminate the clock itself. On special occasions, 16 vertical flashlights will project powerful light beams 10km into the sky. Also known as the Abraj Al-Bait Towers, the clock tower and surrounding complex will have seven towers in total when completed, encapsulating a 7-star hotel, 4-story shopping malls, massive parking garages, and oversized conference centers. The proposed prayer room can hold over 10,000 worshippers. In addition, the residential towers will house permanent residents and sport a helipad to facilitate business and personal travel. In total, up to 100,000 people can be comfortably accommodated within the tower complex.

Memories of EidShare in the innocent pleasures of Eid as seen through the eyes of Jeddah’s young-est residents. Eid to them is a candy-filled season of balloons, laughter, & celebra-

tions! Makes you yearn to return to those carefree days of childhood… even though today’s festivities may include fireworks, family visits, and sumptuous meals in

Jeddah’s finest restaurants.

The first Eid was celebrated in 624 CE by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) with his friends and relatives. These traditions continue to live on amongst Muslims all over the world. However you choose to spend your holiday, may all your Eids continue to

live up to your memories.

You’ve probably noticed that the Saudi culture is one of hospitality, generosity, and social traditions. Stepping into someone’s house guarantees that you will be overwhelmed with food and drink. This beautiful custom of treating visitors as honored guests does have a similar tradition of reciprocity - visitors rarely arrive empty-handed. So whether it’s a bouquet of fragrant flowers, a tray of honey-drenched baklava, or a sinful box of chocolates, you’re sure to find something suitable to place into your host’s hands in our list of ideas. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is home to 13 million date palm trees. Symbolizing vitality and generosity, the date palm tree is the essence of tradition within the Kingdom and appears on the Saudi national emblem (two crossed swords with a palm tree between the blades) as well as on each Saudi Riyal note, regardless of denomination.

Saudi Arabia’s Edible Gold

Phoenix Dactylifera, one of the oldest trees in the world, has thrived in the Arabian Peninsula for the past 10,000 years and has been transplanted to many other countries, including Spain, Mexico and the United States. An elegant and imposing palm, the appeal of this palm tree is furthered by the sweet and uniquely flavorful date. Saudi Arabia is considered to be one of the world’s largest producers of dates, with an annual production of 800,000 tons, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. Within the Kingdom, the most important date-producing regions are Medinah, Riyadh, Qasim, and Asir.

Dates have taken their place in the religion,

culture, and day-to-day life of Saudi Arabia. One famous kind of date, Ajwah, is named after the town of Ajwah in KSA and was referenced in this well-known hadith: Amir b. Sa’d b. Abu Waqqas reported Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) as saying: He who ate seven ‘Ajwa’ dates in the morning, poison and magic will not harm him on that day. (Sahih -Book 23, Number 5081) Dates are served at nearly every occasion, including weddings, birth celebrations or funerals. An appropriate gift for almost any event, dates are high in fiber and an excellent source of potassium. Five dates (approx. 45 grams) contain about 115 calories, nearly all from carbohydrates. Bedouin Arabs who eat them on a regular basis show an extremely

low incidence of cancer and heart disease. It’s called the “Bread of the Desert” for its sustaining virtues, plentiful abundance, and ease of transport.

Dates can be made into ma’amoul, a crumbly cookie with a date paste filling, or into cakes or juice. In recent years, shops specializing in selling dates have revolutionized the way dates are enjoyed by incorporating them into unexpected products such as ice cream, or sparkling date juice. Even peanut butter-filled dates

and chocolate-covered dates are becoming trendy, new treats. Of course some traditionalists stick to the rituals that have been passed down over centuries, preferring a cup of Arabic coffee and a date or two as the typical way to enjoy these succulent fruits; a subtle combination that brings out the elusive flavors of the fruit.

“And from the fruit of the date-palm and the vine, ye get out wholesome drink and food: behold, in this also is a sign for those who are wise” [16:67]

Join the Discover Saudi team as they share their exploits with Destination Jeddah each month. From hidden caves to dry wadis to lush valleys – Saudi Arabia has a surprising variety of environments. Explore on your own or with an organized tour group, Destination Jeddah will point the way. So let the adventures begin…first let’s meet our guides, The Three Travelling Amigos:

TheAdventure Begins

By Ahmed Sahab

Mahmoud Al Shanty - the person in charge of the caving and the desert studies of the official Saudi Geological Survey. He led the first organized trip to cross the Rub’ al Khali (The Empty Quarter) with over 28 SUVs and a chopper. Stay tuned for an in depth description of his expedition in an upcoming issue.

Raid Basrawi - the professional photogra-

pher and active trip organizer. He is a natural born adventurer who is always willing to explore the unknown which lies beyond the horizon.

Last but not least, my name is Ahmed Sahab and I am a media guy. I have been in the TV business more than 15 years as a grid planner, moved up to be the head of a TV channel, and now I own a production

company and am an executive producer of a TV channel. I produce documentaries about the wild outdoors, which is how we got together and formed Discover Saudi. We share the same passion to explore and reveal the unknown from our base in Jeddah.

Chapter 1: BahraBahra - also known as ‘the dead bridge’. It’s the bridge right after the Bahra exit on the way to Makka. Head south to discover a great place for sand dunes – an ideal half-day trip that is only 25 minutes away from Jeddah. This is the place to test your SUV, your sand dune driving skills, and your courage.

The first time I went there, it was so thrilling that my heart was pumping and jumping out of my chest! To avoid getting stuck in the sand, you need to let A LOT of air out of your SUV’s tires (e.g. pressure should be at most 12psi instead of 35 or 40psi). The most important tip to remember is: don’t drive too fast or make fast turns, otherwise your tires may come off the rims. Don’t ever make a complete stop when you are on the top of a sand dune otherwise you will get stuck with both front and rear tires spinning in the air!

Requirement: You MUST have a 4X4 SUV to challenge the sand dunes! If you get stuck, just switch on your SUV’s flashers

DESTINATION JEDDAH 29

Page 32: DJ Issue 20

DESTINATION JEDDAH30

and someone will come to your rescue. Try putting your jeep into reverse and gently ‘rock’ the vehicle back and forth to see if you can get some traction to climb out. Don’t let your tires spin too long otherwise you’ll only dig yourself in deeper. Make sure you throw a strong, towing rope into your SUV before you head out – you’ll need it if you get stuck or if you are pulling someone else out.

Musings: I think the most beautiful thing is watching the sunset in the desert. It is a sight everyone should see…indescrib-able. We hope to keep our beautiful KSA in a pristine condition by living our motto every time we venture out into nature: Take away only memories & leave behind only footprints.

The Adventure Continues… next month.Chapter 2: Um Jersan Caves

Saudi music enthusiast and activist, Hass Dennaoui has been quite busy since his online debut in 2009. He’s taken his blog, Re-Volt, not only to the next level, but also to the international stage. Re-volt’s first event was held in Beirut this July and showcased a number of talents from the Arab region, among them, Jeddah’s very own Qusai (Don Legend).

Re-Volt:Bringing Underground Music Into The Light

Hass is special. You can tell this from your first conversation with him. Generous and sincere, he’s doing this for the music – he’s not in it for the fame, the glory, or the money. “My goal is to attempt to enlighten and elevate the minds of listeners and give them a varied choice of what is really out there,” reveals Hass. He creates playlists of underground music, conducts interviews with international artists and has already built an international cult following.

“I try to give these artists the exposure they deserve,” states Hass. He believes that

For more information visit: http://revoltradio.blogspot.com/

Hass’s unique “Re-Volt” radio is a portmanteau of “revolution” and “voltage” and Hass takes both of these ideas to the next level. Fascinated and enthralled, we invited Hass to come to our office for a quick chat about his supreme understanding of music’s role in the shaping of culture

Imran: Where did Re-Volt radio come from?

Hass: I started the Re-Volt blog because I was sick of the radio. Payola (record labels bribing radio stations to play and popularize their music) was a big deal in the States in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s), and it still happens here. I have no problem with any type of music, but the industry is set up to reject independent music and free thought. The overproduced, overhyped music is played repeatedly on the radio stations and nobody knew about any other music. That’s where Re-Volt radio comes in. I believe in music liberation; music that can elevate us and push us in new directions.

Imran: What genres of music do you play?

Hass: In the beginning, I played all types of music that wasn’t getting airtime. Over time, I began to focus more on interviewing hip-hop artists, because these guys are saying something that just isn’t being heard. There’s something about hip-hop that allows their creativity to explode. I really feel that the Arab experience meshes very well with hip-hop. Hip-hop allows these people to have a voice and reach people; something that has been denied to them all their lives.

Imran: I see hip-hop as a ‘verbal intifada’. How has hip-hop been shaped by the Arab experience?

Hass: Yes! It’s power in the hands of the people. You go down to the refugee camps in Lebanon and you can find these Palestinian kids with a couple of car batteries, a computer, and a microphone recording massive sh*t. Hip-hop was created in America, with a lot of Muslim roots; most of the original hip-hop pioneers were Muslim. It came out of that oppression of the slave experience, of the frustration of not having a voice. A lot of Arab musicians can really relate to that. Although hip-hop was created in the United States, the Arab world has the power to define hip-hop as much as hip-hop can shape the Arab world. What is most important is the message: kids don’t want to hear just another love song, or a “rap” song about drinking and going clubbing. They want to hear music with a message, and that is what I can offer them. I don’t force people to listen to this music; I’m just letting people know what’s out there. It’s up to you to make the choice.

Stay revolted!

Arabs have a lot to say, whether it’s political or social. “Arabic hip-hop is emerging and mind-elevating. Just listen to what the artists are saying, it’s more than just music—it’s a movement; it’s a message that we as Arabs should support.” This seems like the just the beginning for Hass, whose blog and Twitter page seem to be growing exponentially in popularity as he helps the Arab music scene reach its full potential.

Cracking the vault of US purchasesBuying online from the US has never been easy. Saudi Arabia’s lack of a real postal service and the limited compatibility of local credit cards both don’t help when you try to make an online purchase. But even if that goes through you might still get the dreaded US billing address requirement! Got a US Aramex address? Even that’s starting to become a problem as more and more companies are refusing to ship to package forwarders.Think there’s no way out? Think again.

With USunlocked.com you have a way to get all those fascinating items and latest gadgets delivered straight to you.

How it works: Simple.Register with the Web Site and you can apply for your own prepaid US debit card or use their personal shopping service, but the great thing about it is that USunlocked also gives you a US billing address. So ordering that those hard to get items couldn’t be easier and are now within your reach in Saudi Arabia.

Once you make your purchase your order is shipped to the address at USunlocked and then its repackaged to reduce costs and reshipped to your local address. If a store wont let you access it’s website because you don’t have the right IP address, USunlocked even lets you download a program to help with that. What more could anyone want!

Beat the HeatBoat trips from Jeddah for diving, snorkeling and fishing

The full brunt of summer is almost over and it’s a great time to look for outlets from the heat other than seeking refuge in air-conditioned shopping malls. You are spoilt for choice when it comes to a day of fun on the Red Sea. Whether you are looking for an easy cruise on the water or adventure filled snorkeling/diving trip, there is something for you

Venturing out on the sea for scuba diving and snorkeling:If you charter your own boat, the cost will certainly be higher but you can also pretty much set your own schedule. Fees usu-ally cover a set number of hours and you can plan out your trip as you see fit. A less expensive approach would be to book a seat

aboard a one-day dive or snorkeling trip on the weekends at one of the many dive-operators in Jeddah. Advance reservation is required. Diving on a dedicated dive trip is convenient because everything is setup for diving. Also, reputable operators will pro-vide a boat crew and a captain that knows the best diving spots to suit the skill level

Page 55: DJ Issue 20

of all divers and have the appropriate safety and first aid training.

Day Charter boats in Jeddah mostly depart from Sharm Obhur a.k.a. “the Creek” located immediately north of Jeddah. Re-member to bring your national ID, iqama or passport for departure registration with the Coast Guard. All scuba divers must also present their diving licenses and logbook s for proof of scuba certification and qualifi-cation. Rusty divers (the ones that haven’t been diving for a long period of time) would greatly benefit from taking a Scuba Review class with a qualified instructor or divemas-ter before going out on these boat trips.

Go to bed early on the night before the trip and get a good night’s rest. Also, drink plenty of fluids starting at least the night before to avoid dehydration. Stay away from caffeine products which can worsen dehydration. Stick to water and fruit juices. A good source of substitute caffeine energy is a banana. They are also full of potassium and help prevent muscle cramps.

Make sure you bring along a good camera – either regular or underwater. To be fair, a pod of pilot whales is a rather rare sighting. They rarely show up in places scuba divers would normally be (near reefs). Do not try to touch the animals or get excessively close to them as they may interpret this as aggressive

behavior on your part. Let them come to you if they so choose and you will get some fantastic pictures out of the experience.

It is important to keep some safety precau-tions in mind while snorkeling or diving on a boat trip. Enter and exit the boat only at the instructions of the crew or captain. When getting back on the boat, pay attention to the boat propellers and stay far away if the engines are still running. Just like at shore, jet skies and swimmers are like water and oil: they do not mix well together, so keep a safe distance from jet skiers.

Venturing out on the sea for fishing and bird sighting:Boats operated from marinas can also be chartered for deep-sea fishing trips and bird watching. Trawling and angling are popular fishing methods. For the action seekers, trawling trips may help you land tuna, boni-tos, mackerels, barracuda, rainbow runners and perhaps even a swordfish.

For birdwatchers, bring your binoculars and bird charts. The buoys and maritime naviga-tion markers make popular landing areas for sea birds, such as Brown Boobies, Cormo-rants, Seagulls and Terns. During migratory seasons, land birds may choose your boat as a resting perch. Common sightings are tiny warblers, swallows and more. Ducks, geese and flamingos can also be seen flying

A pod of dolphins surf in front of the bow.

into the wind only a few meters above the sea surface.

Do your part:To fully appreciate this opportunity to enjoy nature, it also our responsibility to interact with the sea in a non-destructive way. Don’t touch or move anything in the water apart from the boat and yourself and do not leave behind anything that you brought with you. Another way you can help is by participating in this year’s Project AWARE Coastal and Under Water Clean Up Day on September 25, 2010.

Worldwide, seas have endured lots of abuse, but that does not mean that the underwater environment is indestructible. We are seeing the impact of years of pollution. Sea tempera-tures worldwide are rising, and this is having a damaging effect on sensitive underwater habitats, 2010 has been one of the warmest years on record since 1880. The Red Sea is the most northerly of coral reefs in the world. Will it be the last one enduring the stress of global warming? Take care of this precious resource and enjoy it whilst it is still healthy.

Local Flavors: The Battle of Cuisines

The Kingdom’s dining scene is bursting with options when it comes to eating out. A quick glance at the Restaurant Directory of Destination Jeddah lists numerous choices for trying out international cuisines. But what if you’re in the mood for local food? Is the new generation of Jeddah gastronomes finding Saudi cuisine to be passé?

The past few years have seen a dramatic change in the culinary landscape of the Kingdom. Fusion and eclectic cuisines have found takers of all ages, while Thai, Korean, Japanese and Italian restaurant franchises are flourishing. Has this resulted in regional flavors taking a back seat? Rashed Islam, founder of Jeddahfood.com, a popular food website, doesn’t think so. “International franchises are exactly that, international. These franchises and fast food joints can be found all over the world. So it’s certainly not specific to our region,” he says. “Most people get their regional fix at home, something that rings true particularly in Ramadan when many of these international franchises struggle to stay open due to lack of customers. Convenience also plays a large part. People want fast food as they are always in a hurry. But that’s not to say you can’t pick up a bag of foul, or a delicious, authentic kibda (liver) sandwich on most of Jeddah’s streets.”

Some residents complain that a lack of genuine, Saudi food spots, the popular-ity of adventurous eating, and the fact that well-traveled Saudis are easily jaded with the typical food offerings, result in Jeddah’s dining scene reflecting the chain choices on offer in other cosmopolitan cities around the world.

Saudi Chef Yasser Jad, Senior Manager of the in-flight kitchen of Saudi Arabian Airlines Catering, and president of the Saudi Arabian Chef Association, points out that an important factor is also the lack of professional Saudi chefs in the market. “It is dominated by expatriate chefs who make Saudi-style dishes,” in his opinion. One noticeable trend is that many Saudi dishes, such as kibda, foul, and tamia, are more popular at breakfast time. Another reason for the younger generation to prefer Italian styled-cafes or Japanese Sushi joints

By Afifa Jabeen Quraishi

is because of the extremely hospitable staff and the exotic ambience – definitely not the case with traditional restaurants.

Islam adds, “There are still new restaurant concepts and franchises opening here that are inspired by local and regional flavors, Egypt and Lebanon being prime exporters of such concepts. For example, Abu Shakra is one that has been around for a while, and more recent additions to the scene include Café Blanc, and Mayrig. Not to mention Yildizlar, that has stood the test of time. But even Saudi startups are beginning to focus on local flavors. Most recently we saw Crunchy Square (oven-baked Motabag), which is an excellent example of local fla-vors being updated for the 21st century, with a more health-conscious approach. Deera Café’s ‘local’ Saudi take on modern coffee culture is also impressive.”

Islam and Chef Jad give you their pick on the best Saudi restaurants in Jeddah:· For main lunch/dinner meals: Redan, Jareef, Al-Fatah, Mandi House, Al- Bahaar, Al-Khalzam· For light Hijazi breakfast/dinner: Garmosshi, Ba-Neamah, Abu Zaid, Cafeteria Al-Qariyat Al-Zahabiya for breakfast; specialty: kibda sandwiches

· For modern style lunch/ dinner/ snacks: Bukhari Express, Al-Bangla –specializing in seafood. Nagi Al Harbi: Kofta-kebab restaurant in Balad. Ghozi: On Hera’a Street for local and regional dishes; serves the best Chicken Muthbi and Mathlootha Rice. Redan: For Kabsa and Saleeq. Taktaka: Local Hijazi dishes.

Islam believes that the popularity of inter-national cuisine will continue to rise in the Kingdom “as people cannot eat one thing all the time, and as they say, variety is the spice of life”.

To bring about a resurgence of regional cuisine, “more hotel and tourisms colleges should come up to produce professional Saudi cooks,” said Jad, adding “SARCA can be the center to gather all the concerns of those in the food industry, their problems and solutions for the improvement of Saudi cuisine.” “As long as the recipes are kept, there is certainly no old cuisine dying out,” affirmed Islam, adding “but there is nothing to stop a Saudi restaurant having the same level of success - in many cases it is already happen-ing.”

Kinda offers a daily breakfast buffet, and a la carte lunch and dinner. For Ramadan and Eid, their generous buffet tables are laden with a variety of delectable foods from around the world, as well as the traditional favorites for those with less adventurous palates. The obligatory ‘hot’ stations are present – don’t miss the crispy shrimp tempura! The versatility of the chefs is evident in the high level of quality and execution of the more technically difficult dishes such as beef roulade, shrimp creole, and Moroccan chicken couscous.

Desserts encompass the range of Arabic favorites, French patisseries, and creative inventions of the chef such as the ‘Jazz’ offering which incorporated white and dark

chocolate mousse, raspberry syrup, and freshly whipped cream – delicious.

The concept of Ohayo was born when its owners returned to the Kingdom inspired by their trip to a similarly-themed restaurant in downtown Japan.

The generous serving sizes ensure that you are getting a great deal as compared to other Japanese restaurants. The standard order of sushi is eight pieces versus the usual six pieces in most other places. Still in its soft opening phase, Ohayo’s chefs will soon be supplemented by a team of additional chefs experienced in traditional Japanese cuisine. The restaurant also keeps an updated menu to suit local taste buds. What makes Ohayo stand out from other similar restaurants is its

policy of using only home-made noodles, a chief staple of Japanese cuisine, as well as ingredients that are freshly available in the market.

The ambience is relaxed and the warm color scheme used in the decor gives this restaurant a cozy feel, making it perfect for walk-in, casual dining, and ideal for the freshest Japanese take-away in town. Ohayo may well win some loyal customers in Jeddah who will follow the advice of the restaurant’s final message which is inscribed in graphic red Japanese characters on its main door – ‘See you soon’!

Striving to bring its customers an authentic Japanese culinary experience with a friendly, casual ambience, the owners of Ohayo have made quite an effort…and it shows. Step into the restaurant and you are transported into a downtown Japanese street-scene which comes alive in a beautifully visual manner. From the black, tar-like flooring to the red, black, and white walls which are lined with pictures embellished with sentences in elegant Japanese script with their accompanying English translations, the attention to detail is evident in every element of the restaurant.

Bab Al YemenBab Al Yemen sets itself apart by taking the Yemeni dining experience to the next level. The exterior of Bab Al Yemen hints at the authentic experience which awaits you inside. The simple clay-covered walls are adorned with decorative stonework that continues throughout the interior, while the stark white décor is accented with Spanish tiles and colorful hand-embroidered cushions.Imported hand carved, pre-seasoned stone pots are used as both the cooking pot and the serving dish, so you’ll receive a steaming hot Yemeni classic in the same pot it was cooked in. Your meal begins with a complimentary bowl of typical Yemeni soup – a clear broth. The succulently tender shredded beef Fahsa, and huge Gulf shrimp with tomatoes Gamber Mughash, competed as our favorites, while the ground lamb with potatoes Selfa was a traditional favorite from Sana’a. Delightful Yemeni bread is cooked to order – definitely a highlight of the experience, as it is flaky, soft, and delicious. Complete your meal with either the popular banana bread pudding Masoob, which comes drenched in cream and honey, or the dense, rich date-cake Fatit Tamr. Adili Chai is tea prepared with evaporated milk, cardamom, and spices – a perfect way to bring your visit to an end.

Authentic and reliable Lebanese fare with a flair.Named after the humble ‘pine nut’, this Jeddah restaurant has been around for over 20 years. Dishing up mouth-watering mixed grills and fresh shawarmas may seem easy, but their commitment to quality and quantity has ensured Sonobra’s endur-ing success. The main entrance showcases the open kitchen with friendly staff who are quick to customize your shawarma or charcoal grill orders to your taste. Make sure you sample the chicken in particular – it’s succulent, flavourful, and plentiful.

The family section upstairs is surprisingly spacious and bright. With frosted glass enclosures to ensure privacy, the booths are roomy and nicely accented with blue interior décor which temporarily transports you to the seaside of Lebanon or Greece with a little imagination.

You can’t really go wrong with any of the traditional items on the menu. Even the crème caramel for dessert is a notch above the standard fare (but with Saadeddin Pas-try just next door – nut lovers may opt for a tray of baklawa instead!) Friendly service, spotless cleanliness, and reliable food com-bine to make Sonobra one of those places that you’ll find yourself returning to over the years. Eat in or take away - you won’t go wrong either way.

Sonobra MolokhiaBy Samar Al-Shami

Preparation Method:Boil the chicken pieces with the onion and the 2 Maggie cubes in the 6 cups of water. Add the molokhia and pepper after 1/2 hour and simmer another 10 minutes. On the side, fry the garlic till it browns, but do not burn it. Pour the garlic over the molokhia/chicken mixture. Stir the mix gently and serve with rice or bread.

Ingredients 1 Whole Chicken (skinned & cut-up) 1 Onion (whole)3 Molokhia Bundles (finely minced)6 Garlic Cloves (finely minced)2 Maggie Cubes 1 teaspoon black pepper6 cups of water

Molokhia is a famous Arab dish histori-cally attributed to Egypt. Molokhia can be prepared and served in a variety of dif-ferent styles. Molokhia Mowarega is the Lebanese version of the popular Egyptian Molokhia Khadra. Traditional Jeddahwis prefer Molokhia Nashfa, which is very similar to the Khadra version except that dry molokhia leaves are used instead of fresh.

In the mood for solid, affordable Chinese food? Check out Chopsticks, the relatively new spot on Sultan St. On a recent visit with my family, we all agreed that Chopsticks is a welcome addition to the Oriental restaurant scene in Jeddah. The restaurant’s airy interior is enhanced by the entrance wall of glass decorated with pink cherry blossoms. Beautiful fresh flowers floating in water adorned each table. We were presented with a complimentary shot of a potent ‘juice’ which we could drink straight or mix with 7-Up. A new flavor every day ensures your taste buds will be in for a treat – both the cherry and lemon/mint offerings were guzzled down by everyone at our table.

I’d highly recommend their chicken corn soup – flavorful, rich, and creamy smooth. Try the delicious shrimp balls as an appetizer. The chicken and beef dishes we sampled were all solid representations of Chinese food – a bit generic, but nothing to complain about.

All in all, Chopsticks satisfied our craving for Chinese food admirably. It’s also affordable for a family restaurant meal in an upscale setting without breaking the bank.

Eid Al-FitrLiterally the “Festival of Breaking the Fast”, Eid al-Fitr is one of the two most important Islamic celebrations (the other occurs after the Hajj, or pilgrimage to Makkah). This holiday marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.

You may hear the phrase ‘Eid Mubārak (“Blessed Eid”) or ‘Eid Sa‘īd (“Happy Eid”) resonating throughout the city on this special day. Children in particular are quick to offer Eid greetings in anticipation of the small monetary gifts called ‘Eideyah’ which adults reciprocate with. Since generosity is one of the hallmarks of a Muslim…it’s lucky that the definition of a ‘child’ can be stretched well into your 30’s or 40’s! Make sure your pockets are full of SR50 – SR200 notes, depending upon your budget, because you’re sure to encounter some children this Eid.

Although charity and good deeds are always important in Islam, they have special significance at the end of Ramadan. As the month draws to a close, Muslims are obligated to share their blessings by feeding the poor and making contributions to mosques and charities. At Eid al-Fitr, people customarily dress in new clothes, adorn their homes with lights and decorations, give treats to children, and enjoy visits with friends and family after the congregational Eid morning prayer.

-Take over a plate of food/dessert to share with your neighbors – no conversation required!

-Inquire about their family & extended family, especially if you’ve noticed lots of cars outside their home.

-The weather: A classic and somewhat clichéd beginning to a conversation, but it’s a safe, timeless tactic that affects everyone.

-The weekend: Ask about their holiday plans especially their Eid celebrations.

-News & Current Events: Always of interest to political types.

-Anything you share in common with them… something new about the neighborhood, state of the roads, park maintenance etc.

So whether you’re new to the area or a veteran of the neighborhood, Eid is a great excuse to get to know your neighbors and build bridges!

Fast Fac t s :

Islamic Religious Holidays: • Eid Al-Fitr (Festival of Fast Breaking) 1 Shawwal/September 10, 2010

•Eid Al-Adha (Festival of Hajj Sacrifice) 10 Dul Hijjah/November 16, 2010

BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR

Eid is traditionally a family-focused holiday, with the 3 days of Eid dedicated to immediate and distant relatives. But it’s also a wonderful opportunity to meet your neighbors if you don’t already know them.

Tired of reading about the obligatory Ramadan weight gain? The flabby muscles due to lack of exercise? The early-onset diabetes from the sugary excesses of Eid? Don’t worry, this is NOT another article about the above issues – you’re probably as tired of them as we are. Enjoy the last few days of Ramadan and celebrate Eid with the customary overabundance of food – it’s ok to relax your vigilance once in a while.

Long-term health relies on sensible eating habits, regular exercise, and good genes. Yes, you can impact all of these factors to a certain extent…but it’s primarily your ‘food state of mind’ which will guarantee your success. Follow these 3 rules to a fun-filled, heart-attack free future, seriously.

• Listen to your mother in all things EXCEPT when she told you to finish all the food on your plate. Serve yourself small portions, eat slowly and savor each bite, then stop eating when you satisfy your initial hunger pangs. Give your food time to reach your stomach so that your brain receives the “Stop eating – I’m full” message from it. • Don’t be embarrassed to ask waiters to pack up leftover food to take home. Too many people think, “Well, I’ve paid for this food – I have to stuff myself otherwise I’m wasting my money.” Just take it home for a second meal or give it away to those in need,

but you don’t have to pack on extra pounds in order to avoid asking for food to be boxed. Restaurant-size portions are usually enough for 2 adults.• Never diet! Dieting implies a temporary state where you are depriving yourself of food that you really, really want. Instead of falling into the trap of yo-yo dieting where you struggle to lose a few pounds, only to immediately regain them once you return to your normal eating habits, try giving in to temptation. Eat half a piece of cake, a smaller serving of ice cream, or just one piece of baklawa. It’s all about satisfying the craving before it grows out of proportion in your mind. If you deny yourself chocolate for an entire month, you’ll think you deserve twice as much when you finally succumb. It’s much healthier to have a small taste now rather then overdo it later (plus you’ll find yourself in a better overall mood once you’re free of the “I’m punishing myself by dieting” mentality.)

Eid is the season of gift giving. But instead of spending as much on the wrapping as the gift itself…get creative with gift-wrap. Don’t rush to the specialty gift shops that tempt you to purchase pricey paper only to see it ripped and discarded on the ground moments after the gift has been opened. Rummage through your cupboards and closets for the raw materials necessary to transform everyday items into works of art. Be boldly confident and create your own signature style!

GREEN LIVING: A way of life

Green Quote of the Month

It’s important to realize that green living shouldn’t really be a second thought in today’s world, with ever-improving technology and a wealth of resources available to those who are interested.

“We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors…we borrow it from our children.”- Native American Proverb

EC -Gadgets1. Newsprint, colorful pages from magazines (ok – you can even use last month’s issue of DJ if you must!), and grocery store flyers can be used to create unique wrapping paper. Go for a collage effect if you like the mixing of texts and colors, or just use each piece of paper straightforwardly to cover your gift.

2. Fabric is a trendy, new option. Either new fabric from the souk or recycled linens, pillowcases, or tablecloths all make lovely wrapping material, especially for that unusually shaped gift.

3. Plain brown paper bags which you block print using cut potatoes/onions/squashes can be as much fun to create as it is to give as a gift-bag. Who knows – someone may spot your creation and offer to help you set up your own business!

According to researchers, children who interact with their natural surroundings and mingle with living beings (e.g.; animals or plants) are more environmentally friendly as individuals and more eco-friendly in their behavior and thinking patterns than children who engage in materialistic activities on a daily basis. It makes sense that kids who grow up in concrete jungles, never feeling the grass beneath their bare feet, will be disconnected from the world of nature.

Follow some of the tips below to transform your children from consumerist toy-addicts into touchy-feely children of the world. Any activities that promote interaction with nature and the eco system are surefire successes with kids – after all, what child doesn’t like to get their hands dirty?

Walking around in the garden / on the beach / in the sand Cooking a meal (or baking) Shopping at Fish Market / Vegetable Market Caring for a pet Gardening/Tending a potted plant indoors or

outside Gathering samples of insects, fossils, seeds, shells,

logs, rocks, leaves & branches Reading library books that focus on topics in

natural history Watching TV programs/documentaries about wild

life & natural habitats Looking at magazines such as National Geographic Exploring a natural environment such as a deserted

beach area, a forest or even the zoo.

It is vital to have an open and creative attitude when children engage in such unstructured and imaginative activities – allow them to set the pace. So, while your children are engaged in spontaneous and free flowing experiences that involve natural aspects, sit back, enjoy the moment, and focus on the happy feelings that emerge from giving them time with Mother Nature.

Although living standards are rising globally, world poverty remains an urgent concern. Economists, financial experts, and activists have written books on the solution to world poverty. However, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, in his book Creating a World Without Poverty, has offered a revolutionary idea to help people lift themselves out of poverty.

The 2006 Nobel Peace Prize laureate and founder of Grameen Bank, Dr. Yunus proposes a concept he calls “social business” as a solution to poverty. This bold concept innovatively employs the power of the capitalist market by replacing the ‘profit motive’ with the ‘potential good’ motive. Thus a social business is a private business which aims at predominantly providing a social benefit, “doing good”, as opposed to primarily focusing on earning profits.

Dr. Yunus points out what he feels are the two main pit-falls of modern economic theory. The first is that people are not one-dimensional, but rather, made up of “a variety of emotions, attributes, and values”. We possess the ability to focus on a variety of goals simultaneously, a skill which many businesses fail to capitalize on. The second shortcoming of modern economic theory is that it has made profit maximization the exclusive goal of a business. Dr. Yunus believes that this obsession with the profit motive as the driving engine to economic development has caused the poor to become marginalized even further.

If you are interested in understanding world poverty and looking for ideas on how to overcome it - then this book is an ideal place to start.

Useful Arabic Words& Pronunciation

Linguists acknowledge that pronunciation is one of the most challenging steps in learning a different language. For example, spoken Arabic has many different dialects, slangs and accents. Some of these dialects can’t be understood by all Arabs. The most common dialects are the Egyptian and the Lebanese. In this article we attempt to shed some light on the traditional Hijazi accent. To illustrate this, we’ve added a picture of a throat to show how the different Arabic letters are pronounced.
